Thanks for a well informed excellent analysis Andy. Only one possible objection would be the WR drafted in the 5th round. Granted I have not seen Wicks play.but his weak numbers at the combine and his history of drops leaves me a little skeptical. He will have to prove himself during training camp. I hope Bo Melton gets a good look as well. I just do not see Wicks as the 5th lock up. Time will tell.

While 5th round picks are a good bet to make the roster, a brief look suggests that DeAngelo Yancy (2017), Jamon Meredith (2009), and David Clowney (2007) did not make the initial 53 as rookies, so it is not unheard of. [I didn't check this thoroughly, and my memory is awful.]

With the liberal rules involving activating people from the practice squad, I'm not sure those last few spots matter as much.

Love, Etling,
Jones, Dillon
Watson, Doubs, Toure, Reed.
Deguara, Musgrave, Kraft
Bakhtiari, Jenkins, Myers, Runyan, Nijman, Tom.

That's 17. We dress 21. At least two more OL.

Clark, Slaton, Wyatt, Wooden
Gary, PSmith, VanNess, Engabare, Campbell, Walker
Douglas, Alexander, Stokes, Nixon
Savage, Ford

That's 16. We'll need at least three more DBs who can actually play defense and are not just special teams demons.

Are You're and Reed locks?

PS is still limited to being called up 3x before being added to the roster?

Very sound reasoning throughout. My only quibble is that it's not hard for me to imagine Sean Clifford struggling and/or getting beaten out for the backup QB spot by Danny Etling. He's a rookie QB, maybe overdrafted in the 5th round. He may not be that good. Also, Etling has a year of experience on him and looked pretty good last year in the preseason. If Clifford gets beaten out, I don't think it would be risky to put him on the practice squad.

So, we didn't carry Love on the active squad his entire rookie year, and he was a #1 pick, but we're going to to hand the backup spot to Clifford his first year? I don't think so. It's Etling, unless we acquire somebody better in the next 100 days.

I think it will be a good battle. Etling is maybe less polished than Tim Boyle, and Clifford is maybe more polished than Love. I think the coaches wanted to bring Love along slowly and not put a lot of pressure on him right away. It seems like Clifford was drafted specifically to be the backup, and they will want to get him in there as soon as possible. It's one of the many position battles I'm looking forward to in training camp this year.

He's not a youngster, and he's played a ton of games against a pretty good level of competition. So those are pluses, IMO. He can throw strikes and help win games, he's a smart guy, etc. All pluses. He's a great Day 3 pick, I think.

This would mean the Packers plan was to have a Day 3 rookie lead the Packers in the event Love gets injured this year. IMO, shaky. Essentially you're putting all your eggs in the Love basket if something goes wrong (and stuff always goes wrong). This doesn't sound like the cautious, thorough, well-thought-out stuff that 1265 does.

More in line with their thinking would be to take a shot on a real good Day 3 prospect, put him on the practice squad, develop him physically and mentally for a year, and then see what we have. And IMO, that strongly implies great faith in Etling OR that there are other plans for the backup spot.

You know, there will be some QBs who become more available as the season gets closer. Guys who have actually started AND won an NFL game.
