Pack-A-Day Podcast - Episode 1691 - Did Brian Gutekunst Fail the Packers?

Andy Herman reviews the state of the Packers, how we got here, and who is to blame.

The Packers are in a bit of a precarious position, and a position they aren't very familiar with. They missed the playoffs, are consistently and desperately trying to free salary cap space, and for the first time in 30+ years may not have a hall-of-fame quarterback to lead their franchise. So how did we get to this point, what went wrong, and is Brian Gutekunst to blame for the current situation? I discuss today.

Yeah, we're about to transition to a younger, better QB while simultaneously getting draft picks for the previous guy. Gutekunst has totally failed.

I've been in general impressed by Brian Gutekunst, but his Achilles heel is groveling before Aaron Rodgers, which perhaps is because he didn't stand up for himself to Mark Murphy.
After two or three seasons of 13 wins by the Packers, plus two playoff victories along the way, Gute had the personal capital to resign from the Packers, in protest of Rodgers, with confidence of getting other job offers as a GM.
Perhaps Gute was put in an extremely difficult position of really wanting to stay with the Packers as a franchise he deeply cares about, but I wonder how he was able to deal with the indignity of it all -- including being unfairly trashed by Rodgers, not by name but in unmistakable terms, in the infamous press conference on the eve of training camp in 2021.
In any case, my hope is that Gute does learn the lesson to never let any player get too big for the team.
I want the best for Gute, and think he can help the Packers to another title.

He failed to move UP to #20 and get Jefferson instead of Love....The cost 2X SB wins. He failed to solidify our DL and our D coaching staff only taught how to come down from the edge and sack....NOT HOW TO SET AN EDGE. There is our 0-3 playoffs in a nut shell. Even last season we had no #1 WR and no #2 WR the entire year. I think Love will be good...Just wish he'd gotten Jefferson and burned a 21' #1 if he wanted Jordan. Not getting another great WR to go along side Adams was and still is detrimental to our success and even success of JL now. Hope we draft 2-top tier WR and a Top 3 TE this draft to get things moving in the right direction offensively.

Here we go… again

Trey Wingo hearing Rodgers to Jets is done deal.

Rapoport only talking in absolutes. So for him… nothing.

Maybe the logistics of more than one player takes a bit longer… hmmm?

Gutt is a dork. I knew it when he took Gary. While many were posting what a genius he was I was posting about the Gary I knew from Michigan and what the analyst were saying.
He has been okay but certainly not lights out play for a 12 pick. He aint no Donald thats for sure.
Gary would go missing in games at Mich and seemed to have a knack for having a small injury when the big games were on the line. This was a Gutt pick, along with Stokes who couldn't play corner in a pee wee league, he may get hurt tackling.
Gutt has not put the pieces in place for form a formidable team to reach the SB. Our playoff losses were due to piss poor pass defense, something he never came close to fixing.
Lets trade em.

Brian should have never given Aaron that contract. This contract is why everything is screwed up. If Aaron didn't have that new contract, which is an anchor around the Packers neck right now, we wouldn't be in caphell and it would be a lot easier to trade him. BUT to Gutey's defense, he almost had to give Aaron that huge deal because he was coming off two straight mvp seasons and the fallout would be too much if Aaron would have played worth a shit this past season and he would have left or held out. Aaron played the Packers like a fiddle and he can really eff this team over if he nixes this deal and we are stuck with him as our qb again. I think if Aaron does accept the trade, the Pack should announce that Jordan is the starter regardless and force Aaron's hand for a trade post-June 1.

You mean Mark Murphy and Russ Ball? Gute doesn’t have authority over coaches or contracts. Murphy took that away when he hired gute and gave it to Ball and had Ball report only to him.

In "Silence of the Lambs," didn't Aaron Rodgers scream a 2nd time: "It puts the lotion on its skin!!!?"

Short and sweet:

One of the biggest determinants of whether GB failed or not is 'who made the final decisions regarding extending AR's contract?...and were there miscalculations made at-the-time that could have been avoided?' This is b/c AR's contract has affected cap space and thus being able to use free agency effectively to fill holes.
Also, it's probably been hard to get the right offensive players to the team when you don't know if you're running MLF's preferred offense...or the version AR wants/insists on running.

Having said this, a 'feather in the cap' for Gute is that in looking at almost 700 UFAs who signed with new teams b/t 2020 and 2022...the Packers were #1....#1!!...in terms of AV gained per 1M spent on UFAs. (It may be no coincidence this was led by the likes of Campbell and Douglass -- who coincidentally both play on the defensive side of the ball where...shall I say...there's less confusion on what would help the team most.
