Surprise Roster Addition Lenzy Pipkins Hoping to Be More Than Just a Surprise

"I feel pretty comfortable with myself," an undrafted cornerback said following a win in the preseason finale against the Rams. "My teammates said I've been playing good this preseason so we'll see what happens."

Waiting to see what happens could be a nerve-racking task, but Lenzy Pipkins must wait no longer.

If you had to go back and find a miscue in Pipkins' preseason performance that would've played a determining factor in whether or not he somehow beats the odds and makes the Packers' roster, it'd be tough. Very tough.

However, you wouldn't have to look further than the road trip to Denver in week three.

In the third quarter, Broncos quarterback Kyle Sloter looked right for Hunter Sharp. In a four-play drive, Pipkins gave up a 20-yard completion and a 21-yard touchdown reception in back-to-back plays. In the process of the touchdown, Pipkins was called for defensive pass interference.

Adding insult to injury, the catch wasn't even contested. Pipkins turned his head late and didn't even get to go airborne and use his 33½ vertical reach to play the ball.

If there were ever a time for Pipkins to fall out of the race between him, Raysean Pringle, Donatello Brown and Josh Hawkins, it was that moment.

Brown, who had a stellar fourth preseason game.

Pringle, who flashed periodically throughout the exhibition season.

Hawkins, who has a spot all but solidified after making the 53-man roster a year ago and becoming a useful component for special teams coach Ron Zook.

In a sequence of two plays, any remembrance of Pipkins being named to Pro Football Focus' Team of the Week for week one after a strong performance against the Eagles was all but a distant memory.

In that game, Pipkins was on the field for 32 snaps in coverage and allowed a couple of catches amounting to four yards. He also had three tackles—zero of them missed, a pass breakup and a hit on the quarterback, according to PFF.

Opportunities are scarce in the preseason if you're fighting for a job. Opportunities are almost nonexistent if you're an undrafted cornerback.

But, if you're an undrafted cornerback signed to the Green Bay Packers, whose 31st-ranked pass defense in 2016 saw five corners go down with injury, your chances just got a little better.

That may have been a major attribution as to why the Packers carried Pipkins as one of their 53-best players on Saturday after announcing their final roster.

Pipkins would've been a prime addition to the Packers' 10-man practice squad, but instead, in the eyes of general manager Ted Thompson, Brown was best suited there and Pipkins the active roster. Clearly, the Packers looked past the brief lapse in play against the Broncos, and rightfully so.

Nothing stood out in terms of agility for Pipkins at his Oklahoma State Pro Day. At 6-0, 190 pounds, the former Cowboy clocked in with a 4.46 for his 40-yard dash. The physique on paper provided the Packers with a lot more to look at than just his Pro Day numbers, and that's not necessarily saying much.

Pipkins played in 30 games at Louisiana-Monroe before finishing his senior season at Oklahoma State, registering two interceptions and 106 tackles in three seasons. He also displayed the ability to blitz from the slot and make tackles in the backfield—he had seven tackles for a loss in the same span.

His lone year at Oklahoma State saw him play in 11 games, grabbing his third career interception and finishing with his second-highest single season tackle total (38) in his collegiate career.

As alumni, he joins offensive guard Lane Taylor as the only players on the Packers' roster to have played for the school. Pipkins just got there four years after Taylor had already begun his NFL career.

Now, Pipkins is more than just some undrafted corner who played one season in the Big 12 Conference. He's the seventh cornerback addition to the Packers' roster this season and the second undrafted cornerback to make the 53-man roster in two years.

Both he and Hawkins hope to follow the success stories of Sam Shields and Tramon Williams, two undrafted success stories whose potential was fully brought out with cornerbacks coach Joe Whitt Jr. There's also been undrafted failures at the position in recent years, such as Makinton Dorleant and Robertson Daniel.

It's just a matter of finding their respective place.

"Everybody has a place, and how they transition is important to get guys acclimated," head coach Mike McCarthy said before Monday's practice.

Pipkins shouldn't see the field in 2017, and if he does, the Packers have much more to worry about than whether or not Pipkins is taking up a roster spot for some other free agent addition that fans will likely incessantly drool over.

"Any time you're playing with young guys, you want to see them in a lot of situations, and how you build gameplans and where you want to incorporate them. You're not going to ask them to run the whole gameplan, they're not ready for that. ... You have to get them ready to play in regular season games and get them ready to have a winning performance."

He shouldn't factor into the winning formula by any means, but cornerback is one of the positions where you can never have too much talent, and that's where Pipkins does factor into the equation.

In 2015, the Packers were coming off a year in which they suffered vital losses to their receiving corps. As a result, they entered the following season with seven receivers. The same domino effect could be playing out before our very eyes, as the Packers were decimated at cornerback last season as stated above.

That alone may very well be the only reason Pipkins made the final roster, but even despite this, there must be some kind of upside to his game worth developing if he beat out both Brown and Pringle.

"At the end of the day it's what we all want," McCarthy continued. "There's always conversations in any room, whether you're sitting here in the staff room with all of the coaches or sitting in the staff room with all of the personnel staff.

"When you get down to who stays and who may be released, it's never 100 percent. That's the nature of this business."

The even bigger roster surprise is the Packers have signed yet again another FA. Signing Quinton Dial from the 49ers.

He is a big guy at 6'5 313 lbs.

With Dial you can plug him into the rotation and don't have to wait for him to develop like Ringo who I felt was a specialty pass rusher and wasn't complete yet.... their D-Line is deep and it's stellar what Thompson is doing picking up discarded players from Frisco. Ahmad Brooks and Quiton dial is like the 49ers Aaron Kampman, Both cast aside because of scheme change

Both are really, really good fits in the packers defense. Dial brings a big presence who can take up blocks. He isn't a guy that will get to the QB but is a guy that can stuff the run, take up blocks and allow others especially the OLB's get into the backfield.
Brooks is a perfect fit at OLB for our defense. What I like most about this move is it allows Mathews to be able to be moved around more.

Our defensive front looks a lot stronger and a lot tougher.

So Pipkens verses Gunter. A depth chart showed Gunter in the slot. How can the Pack place Gunter in the slot. I STILL remember the touchdown he allowed to Julius Jones from the slot. That slower time translates to about a yard over the 30-40 yards when Gunter made his lunge to stop Jones. A yard further would have been a tackle. I just hope that Pipken improves and I am assuming he is faster than Gunter. Then the Pack can choose him over Gunter when Begiel returns or when a OL goes down.

Pipkins has 4.4-4.5 speed. Which is average for a corner. Gunter has 4.7 speed which is what slow linbackers (non edge) run. Gunter makes up for some of it with great hips and excellent instincts. If Gunter ran a 4.4 he'd be an All Pro.

Adding Pipkins and Dial looks like the Packers are loading up the defense for the Atlanta game in Week 2.

If either Lenzy or Gunter have to play GB's in big trouble. Lenzy looked pretty lousy on those back to back plays with the interference penalty. And Gunter...well - faagetabotit. One can only hope they dump that train wreck when someone comes off IR.

Loading up the defense with Dial and Lenzy - that's a joke right? That there's some real talent that should put us over the top.

I'm expecting someone NOT to post a comment that these are some sort of "significant talents" that will be used to stop opposing defenses. I was responding to the "LOADING UP THE DEFENSE FOR ATLANTA" comment. More like "RED MEAT FOR THE DOGS". LOL

You are so unfair that I'm so disapointed. You call the player, rookie to be overrun by elite WR in NFL game? Think again. You might call Capers why he put Gunter in the position, but who was available at the time? Hawkins was showed less than Gunter last season. Despite his speed. So, who was on Packers roster, by your opinion that should cover Julio Jones at that game? Please, give us the name!

Anyone but Gunter? Put a receiver on him - they would have been better off. Josh Hawkins was on the team at the time. Put your fastest receiver on him - anyone. Capische'?

It would seem to be worse getting Turked after the initial cut-down period than on the first day of cuts.

You're probably all jacked you made the roster, called friends and relatives to let them know, maybe even started spending some of that cash then - wooosh they pull the rug out from under you.

The best time to join another team is gone as migratory bubble players have already been plucked for the few PS spots out there.

They'll probably offer RIngo a PS spot and at the same time kick someone else out who will go through the same disappointment.

Competition at it's fiercest. Tough business.

I don't know, maybe so. Pipkens, however, has a good chance to be on the roster for game one even if he is inactive, and that means a game check for $27K.

Otherwise, what stood out from his pro day was his 7.31 second 3 cone time. I just have to assume that it was a bad day and he tested better during some workouts.

Nevermind, I see that they did or will. I like Ringo so I hope we can get him back to the PS. He made some plays this preseason was in the backfield quite a bit.

I'll be honest, I wasn't expecting Ringo to be the move for Dial. Thought the Packers had a lot more invested in him after a strong preseason. They'll still have to clear up a spot on the practice squad: possibly Izaah Lunsford.

I was actually surprised to see Lunsford on the PS. I wasn't all that impressed with him in PS games. Maybe he showed better in practice...

Im hopeful but i doubt we will be able to stash Ringo on the PS. Not that I live and die by what PFF says, but Ringo made their ALL Preseason Team. So did Marwin Evans. I think the Dial signing, as someone said, is more about having seasoned guys out there as opposed to a guy like Ringo who is still developing. Also, the more I look into him the more excited I get about Odom. His getoff from what Ive seen, is just wow.

The Packers have released Ringo to make room for Dial. They may try to stash Ringo on the PS if he clears waivers.

As for Pipkins, he or Gunter could be moved to the PS or released when Allison comes off of suspension next week. Based on the depth chart as of today on Packers.com Gunter is the #6 CB and Pipkins the 7th.

Another possibility is they Keep Pipkins and Gunter until Beigel returns and then they make a move on one of the CBs.
In any case it's good to see TT making some moves to bring in the type of players who can help us to win this season. Brooks and Dial are solid additions to the defense. I wouldn't mind if he could add an experienced OT and an experienced CB if there are any out there.

We know that we'll see at least one more move when Allison returns next week. Who knows what else before this roster is set. Thanks, Since '61

I love that TT is making low cost moves to add veterans to plug roster holes. Not just Brooks and Dial but add in Davon House, Jahri Evans and Lance Kendricks. One of them may turn into the 2017 version of Bruce Wilkinson...an unheralded offseason move that many felt was instrumental to a successful season when hindsight was applied.

To me, that is the correct way to navigate the offseason. Don't blow up the cap on "splashy" moves. Chasing after the big $$ players is a fools errand and ultimately self-defeating. Just go out and add guys for reasonable prices that can add a little something to the mix, while counting on your existing core of players to really make things go.

I expect they'll ditch one of the two interior OL (Patrick or McCray) to make room for Allison next week...assuming Patrick clears the concussion protocol. Looks like he's practicing.

By the time they get to activating Biegel, I'm sure there will be guys to move to IR or who have played themselves off the roster.

I just wasn't very impressed with this guy but okay. I don't recall the way he played vs Philly, but I remember the 2 plays against Denver. I STILL would like to see an O-Linemen signed because I have zero confidence in any of the O-Linemen who aren't starters. Ted has done some good things adding veterans to the defense, he needs to do that for the O-Line

TT and this team has been stubborn with the types of CB they like(5'10"-5'11") and it has burned us for years, as well as being reluctant to make changes such as getting Gunter the hell out of here. I like him but he is too slow. Even for a 5th CB. I clearly seen Donatello Brown outplay Pipkins and Gunter. It is no way he should not have made the team. Give TT some props for picking up these latest FA, but is that not what he is supposed to do. M

As per Packers.com (alphabetically)...
Ladarius Gunter, CB, 6'2"
Josh Hawkins, CB, 5'10"
Davon House, CB, 6'0"
Kevin King, CB, 6'3"
Lenzy Pipkins, CB, 6'0"
Damarious Randall, CB, 5'11"
Quinten Rollins, CB, 5'11"

I'll admit there's some roundoff in those numbers, but those are mostly players at or above the average height for NFL CBs.
