Packers Select Jacob Monk, G/C in 2024 NFL Draft - Round 5

Jacob Monk, Duke, Offensive Lineman

6'3", 308lbs,  32 3/8" arms, 10" hands, 5.09 40yd, 1.66 10-yd split, 29.5" vertical, 9' broad jump

CAREER NOTES:

Comes from a football family, both his father and uncle were collegiate and NFL players. Five year starter for the Blue Devils, two-time team captain, Honor Society selection and was All-ACC the last three seasons.  Played right guard and center, often switching positions in-game. Also played right tackle his true freshman season. Here's a video on Monk and his family

NFL SCOUTING REPORT:   NFL.COM

Monk was not considered a top-25 offensive lineman by most accounts, but obviously the Packers disagree. Thick and wide frame, great upper body strength honed by many hours in the weight room. Hard worker who gives max effort and likes to lay the wood on defenders. Intelligent player who adeptly processes stunts and games. Main weakness is achoring against a strong bull rush.

FIT WITH THE PACKERS:

The Packers trade up five spots to pick 163 to secure Monk, who has multi-position versatility but they may view as a center first, due to his lack of height/length. His tape would suggest a good fit in a zone-run scheme. Explodes off the snap, showing both power and twitch. His 1.66 10-yd split is elite-level and carries extra importance at the center position. the Packers are hitting us over the head with the OL versatility stick, just in case we haven't figured them out by now. The days of needing the same five for OL continuity may be gone, at least in Green Bay.

If it makes you feel better, I saved two of your draft predictions from last year- they were extremely different from one another- that you posted in the 3 or so days before the 2023 draft.

Let's just say for a guy who is always claiming the Packers are over-drafting, reaching, etc and so forth.. your picks were often nowhere near where the players in question actually went.

If people actually pay attention to the crap you post leading up to the draft, and compare it to the claims you make months or years later, they'll find you make dozens of draft predictions before the draft, then you selectively highlight your supposed "hits" and you don't mention all your "misses".

It's akin to the gambler who insists he 'won' $100 dollars at the casino, but neglects to mention he lost $150.

When they were scouting Barton, they watched the real Duke center. He was playing injured most of the season.

Finally, still need 1 or 2 more OL. Really binging on safety in this draft.

So the main fun of the draft for me is Day 3 - trying to identify Packers-ish players - particularly O-line. Monk was not on any of my A, B or C lists. So a tip of my cap to the Packers scouting department. I had overlooked him.

Under the radar potential difference maker. Thanks for highlighting the 10 yard split. Note: Strong too! 31 bench with nice 40.

The article primarily has him pegged as a center, so at least the Packers have transition/stopgap plan from Myers should they choose to do so.

Lots of info there, thanks! Amazing that some people spend so much time on lengthy write-ups of players who are not expected to be high draft picks. Sounds like this guy has some good qualities for an interior O-lineman.

There were better OL available, but his OG/OC versatility wins the day. Disappointed more OL weren't taken early. I read a while back a quote that LeFleur thinks, in general, OL is not a priority or something to that effect because of his scheme. Don't agree with that, but it's his offense.

Lack of quality O line depth did not punch the ticket in 2019,2020,2021 at playoff time.

"the Packers are hitting us over the head with the OL versatility stick, just in case we haven't figured them out by now." Great line Al !

FWIW he was the 10th ranked Center in The Athletic draft guide, and I looked up his RAS was 9.74

Late round picks usually don't amount to much but lets hope.

They reached for two players, but they normally know what they are doing. Will Give Myers some competition.

Experts graded this pick A-. At the very least if he pushes Myers to improve it's a win. If he plays to his RAS. we hit the jackpot.
My typical knee jerk reaction was WTF. My reaction was wrong. After reading up on him and watching some film.....looks like a keeper.
