Randall Will Bounce Back in 2017

Green Bay Packers cornerback Damarious Randall will bounce back in 2017, write it down.  Or will he?

A quick glance at his stats from his first two seasons in the NFL aren't drastically different.  Three interceptions each season.  14 passes defended in 15 games in 2015 versus nine in 10 games in 2016.  Given a full season, Randall may have exceeded most stats from year prior.  A bounce back would indicate that he dropped off from one year to the next but as far as the numbers alone are concerned, they weren't that far off compared to games played.

My prognosis on Randall this season comes from nothing other than a gut feeling and a lot of hope that he can stay healthy.

Many were down on Randall after he failed to blossom in his sophomore season.  Injuries were obviously a factor, but there were other takes as to why he struggled.  One take was that his confidence was shot.  Another was that his ego was too big and he wasn't taking coaching.  For a cornerback, that's the worst case scenario.

He finished his rookie campaign strong and hopes were high that he would turn general manager Ted Thompson into a genius for taking a college safety and successfully converting him into a starting NFL corner.  Now he enters his third season with more questions than answers.

As we know, Randall, missed six games last season with a groin injury that required surgery.  He returned and had a big game against the Seattle Seahawks late in the season but wasn't able to play to the expectations from the outside or to himself.

Injuries are a tough proposition because players can't be expected to play through them all and still be at their best.  They also tend to get chastised in the media for making excuses and blaming injuries for their poor performance.  Randall had this to say about that (from ProFootballTalk.com):

“I was hurt. But last year is last year. Randall said, via ESPN.com. “Obviously moving forward, I am healthy and hopefully I’m going to stay healthy. And people are going to see why I was drafted in the first round. People are going to see why the Packers believe in me and why they kept putting me out there. People will see. My game is going to speak for itself. If I come back and be an All-Pro guy, a Pro Bowler, then people are going to say, ‘Ohhhhh, it was the injuries’ and this and that. But I’m just going to let them talk.”

If nothing else, Randall isn't short on belief in himself.  And for Packers fans, that should be music to their ears.  After the loss of Casey Hayward last offseason and Sam Shields early in 2017, Randall has had to step in and play a key role.  A role that he may not have been totally ready for, but didn't back down from.

With the return of Davon House, the Packers have some insurance at the cornerback position and someone to calm the waters a bit.  Last year when Randall, Quinten Rollins and LaDarius Gunter were on the field together, it was trial by fire.  All three were learning the game and relying on their God-given talents to get them through each week.  There was no time to sit back and digest the game.

Injuries can obviously change the scenario quite a bit and in a hurry.  Hopefully Randall can stay healthy in 2017 and get back to showcasing his ball skills.  He has a clear nose for the football and will produce turnovers this season.  It's up to Dom Capers to put him in the right position.  Many have opined that Randall would be best suited in the slot, where corners with ball skills thrive.

That would require rookie Kevin King, Rollins or Gunter to jump right in opposite House.  We have yet to see King with pads on.  After last season, Gunter probably shouldn't be the answer.  He filled in with an admirable attitude but his physical skills are limited.  Rollins was too inconsistent and would need to have a very solid training camp to make believers out of most of us.

The scenario isn't clear, but Randall will be on the field plenty in the Packers defense.  After last season, there are valid questions about the results, from what we've heard so far, won't be lacking in desire and effort.

If "bounce back" = play better, then yes. He can't possibly be worse than last year.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I would be so salty if I were Aaron Rodgers. The guy has absolutely zero help defensively. He deserves more effort from the front office to provide a championship caliber defense.

He had SB worthy defenses in two of the last three seasons (2014, 2015). It's the offense that couldn't put it together in the playoffs those years.

Oh you mean those 2 years when we ranked 15th in total defense...?

No, no. The only year we had an elite defense was when we won the super bowl. We ranked 5th in total defense. Rodgers has proven what he can do with an elite defense. 1 for 1 on super bowls with an elite defense. I know 15th overall seems pretty elite (especially after last years catastrophe) but it's not.

15th is enough for Rodgers, if he has a healthy supporting cast around him.

To expand on Chugwater's point, the last 2 years they had no healthy WR's left. 2015, they had no WR's. Against Arizona McCarthy is on record of saying that he was going to go for 2, but Janis got hurt on his TD reception. Simply ran out of guys and then the offense never touched the ball again.

Last year against Atlanta, 3 of the top 4 WR's wouldn't have been playing had it not been for the NFCCG. Not saying it would have changed the outcome of the game, but they at least would have had a better chance to be in the game had they not gotten hurt leading up to the game.

'Zero help defensively' and not having a 'SB caliber defense' just aren't correct when referring to 2014 and 2015.

How can you say the defense wasn't championship caliber in 2014 when it shut down Seattle in the NFCCG and didn't allow a TD until the end of the fourth quarter? The offense had ample opportunity to put this one away early (two possessions inside the SEA 5 that yielded 3 points) and late (Burnett INT return into SEA territory...0 points). And had they won that game like they should have, they'd have played the Patriots - a team the defense held to just 21 points earlier in the season.

As for 2015, this team was 6-0 until the offense started sputtering in the middle of the season. In the playoffs the defense held Arizona to just 10 points well into the fourth quarter. It was the offense that couldn't put points on the board.

The defense doesn't have to be 'elite' (a nebulous word that means different things to different people). It just needs to be good enough to compliment Rodgers...like it has been in two of the last three years.

Again, I just don't consider 15th overall in total defense, elite. Sure our D played pretty well in the NFCCG but you can't just look at one game and say they were elite all year... wouldn't that be nice if that's how stats and rankings worked.

15th overall is middle of the road defense. There's really no disputing facts and stats.

'Randall Will Bounce Back in 2017'...

I will one up this and say Randall AND Rollins will bounce back in 2017.

Most articles are talking about Randall coming back. A lot of people are forgetting that Rollins also played the year hurt and his play really suffered from it.

Both Randall and Rollins had very promising rookie years followed by disappointing second seasons. Both had to have groin surgeries and what really hurt them is the amount of practice time both missed.

I think both players will have bounce back years and I think the defense will look tremendously better for it!

Rollins actually had the better ratings (58.1 passer rating allowed) between the 2 CB's during their rookie seasons. I agree with RC, everybody is forgetting about Rollins. It seems people feel Rollins was so much worse than Randall last year when the reality is they were both pretty bad. If people are willing to give Randall a pass they should be just as willing to give Rollins a pass too. Maybe even more so considering he didn't have surgery until the end of the year.

exactly what I am saying...

While Randall is a much better athlete, Rollins isn't no slouch either.

Lets look at one of the real reasons why they let Casey Hayward leave. Because Randall and Rollins played well their rookie years. Had they not felt that good about them, they wouldn't have let Hayward go.

I really do think we will see a different secondary this year from what we saw last year. With the additions of House, King, we could have a very good secondary.

To expand: I think Randall and Rollins will play better this year because the acquisitions of House and King will allow them to be used in roles that better fit their skill sets. Reasonable health in the secondary will dictate how that plays out, but I'm not concerned that the secondary is going to be the problem this year.

I just want to add one thing. Randall was playing healthy first 2 games of the 2016 season. After that he was listed on injury report every week till the end of the season. So, he played injured 17 games. It must be something else than injurey which prevented him from playing successfully...

If both Randall and Rollins perform better , plus with the addition of House and if King and Jones can contribute we actually might have a pretty promising secondary for the future. Let's welcome the future starting this season .

IFs? What ever happen to Positively. We should not have are stomach in knots. ( with Adams, Rollins or Randall. ) And now the plan could be King , and House. Let's have some people talk about guarantees. I will start. Randall just guaranteed he'll play better. No one was unhappy with him as a rookie. Rollins lacks speed. It's an obvious guarantee he'll have trouble. Rollins and Gunter are one in the same. Experience is not going to help. Quickness will! That leaves House. He is smarter than when he left. He guarantees HELP. But does he still have the speed. We kept Jarod Bush. And House is better. The question is who will be more effective. King or House? In a rookie year that is no guarantee.

I'm not feeling especially positive about Randall and Rollins, but i'm not that negative either - I just don't know what i'm going to see this year.

I did like both Randall and Rollins when they were drafted. Rollins was also a favourite of mine before the draft, because I found it incredible, even ridiculous, that he could play so well in one year of learning (and so did the scouts).

This team has so many changes to it's defensive moving parts from last year, I can only sit back and see how it all pans out. High-pick rookies have been added, young players are getting experience, while the coaches look on to see which of them steps up, and who can't cut it.

Despite me saying I just don't know about the DBs at this time of year, I have nothing against articles like this, it is a very slow time in the offseason, and you have to write something. These articles are way better than discussing, say, players who tell you they are going to be awesome this year, or the endless 'top 100 player' arguments, like you often see on NFL.com.

There's some pretty good stuff on the Packers official site (Packers.com) on the cornerbacks today. The video from Larry M. makes it sound like there's some intensity to those dudes and to their coach (Witt). Should be some good competition in training camp.

2 rookies in the secondary, with 2 or mores years of experience for the rest. If they stay healthy their are no more excuses. King will make some mistakes early but has to learn and be effective as the season goes. We don't have a shut down corner, it would be great if King becomes that guy, but Randall? Randall has been put on notice and he has to produce this year, we'll see if he can step up.
