Packers Draft Special: Final Packers Big Board and Draftapalooza

It's finally here. Draft week. It's been one of my favorite weeks of the year since I was a kid. Growing up the basment at our family's farmstead was our "playroom". My sister and I had about a 16" TV down there that was hooked up to the Dish Network feed from the kitchen. Back then, rounds 1-3 were on Saturday and rounds 4-7 were on Sunday. It was glorious. Now things are a bit more complicated, but the excitement remains. The draft sells "hope". Each team can win or lose and no matter how smart the analyst no one really knows anything for three or four seasons.
Green Bay is currently armed with their most draft capital since at least 2009. This was brought to you mostly by Anthony Barr, whose hit on Aaron Rodgers turned a 4-1 team heading towards 11-13 wins into a team that almost made it to .500, but didn't. Green Bay's 7-9 record has led them to the top half of each round. It was also brought by the trading of Damarious Randall to the Browns, moving Green Bay up in the last two rounds that really matter (4 and 5).
What follows now is draftapalooza. I'm going to include my top 175 Packers Big Board (this has been explained). The expansion covers Green Bay's eight selections in the top 174.

Appreciate the work you put into this Ross. I'm just not that sold on either Landry or Davenport. I kinda think they would be more "need" picks than actual "value" picks at #14.

That's not a bad thing. Heck. I'm as far from an NFL talent evaluator as you can get. So I'm hoping if the Packers do pick Landry he turns out to be a stud. I'm just skeptical that he may not be the best value at #14. Thanks again for the hard work you put into your board. Much appreciated.

Ross - appreciate all of your hard work on this. Job well done. Gallup is a great name for a WR. Maybe we should just draft players based on their names relative to their positions and see how that works out.

Ross. You and I agree on LVDE. I live near Boise and follow the Broncos. He's a very good coverage LB with good range but he doesn't really offer that much along the line-of-scrimmage. I don't see him as good value in RD 1. I do like Cedric Wilson at WR. You have him at #62. He will be a good pick up for somebody probably on Day 3. Tough, good hands, good speed, smart and can catch in traffic as well as anybody. Just needs to add about 15-20 lbs on his 6'3" frame and he'll be a very good WR.

Vänder Esch is a one year wonder, but what a wonderful year.
What cannot be discounted is his athleticism and and production in whatever he was asked to do in HS or at Boise.
If he is there at 45 take him...even move up a few clicks to make sure you get him.

I can't understand landry so high. He disappeared for long stretches last year, and edge rusher has real diminishing returns if you have a great Dline. A guard (even nelson) isnt worth being top ten on anybody's board imo. Way too high for what Ron Wolf considered the easiest position to learn. Packers have found tons of Oline talent in the 3rd through 5th rounds.

It was injury related. He was playing on a bum ankle. His 2016 tape is the best tape from any defensive player in this draft. He's a better pass rusher than Chubb and I frankly don't care about the difference in their run defense. I also believe Nelson could play tackle. He's the best guard prospect since I've been grading.

I don't understand that statement at all. Like even a little bit. Pass rushers are quarterbacks and have the lowest ARS of any position.

If you look at how the Giants beat the Packers and Patriots in 2011, it was rushing 3 or 4 and dropping 7 or 8 into coverage. The interior pass rush will take a top QB of their spot and you will have an extra defender to leave the coverage tight. Same thing with what the eagles ran last year, their LBs and DEs overperformed because they had a stout Dline rotation. That has been consistent with past Pettine defenses, who never had great outside rushers, but stout Dlines. Packers have 2 bonafide starters in Matthews and Perry, with development projects Beigel and Gilbert behind them. Throw in another 3rd rounder and they will more than adequate pass rush. The DB room is much thinner. I believe in King, but he can't play alone. House is purely a rotation player. Williams can have a great year, but he has a real expiration date. If the Packers want to play a rookie on the boundary, they can't be grabbing him in the 3rd round. If they draft him second round, then they miss out on a deep threat WR and get stuck with another year of too slow, old, inconsistent, or unproven receivers. If I had to prioritize a need, I say DB, WR, and Edge. I don't believe in this current edge draft group as much, and would hate to see them reach for one early and have him turn out inconsistent like his college campaign. They really need a real linebacker that can rush AND have coverage skills. I know davenport doesnt have the coverage skills. I'm not so sure about Chubb or Landry, but they can't keep playing linebackers without coverage skills given how lethal pass catching RBs and TEs are nowadays. I would really love to see Edmunds or Roquan who can rush, AND play coverage, move inside and outside, and even stay on the field during transition between 3 and 4 fronts, something JJ Watt could do last year. Landry on the other hand would stay on the field and do one thing every down. He does not have the versatility that Pettine values, and the packers need.

I will concede that another top Dline prospect would be fine in principle for their draft position just because that would be a monster front and they could keep the rotation live and just pummel QBs in the 3rd and 4th quarter

So much to unpack here.
1. Let's not base our team plan off of a franchise who's picking 2nd overall because of something they did well 7 years ago.
2. This shows a basic misunderstanding of the way the Giants did things. All they did was pay big money and big draft capital on EDGE players. Then the rushed the small ones from the outside and the big ones from the middle. Michael Strahan, Osi Umenyiora, Mathias Kiwanuka, Justin Tuck and JPP were all EDGE players coming out of college. NYG would often use four of them at a time or three of them with pass rushing DT Chris Canty. If you wanted to follow the Giants way of doing things you would draft more pass rushers, not fewer. Also they spent almost nothing on the off the ball linebackers you're pushing for. Good teams don't usually spend a lot on those guys. Michael Boley was a 5th round pick. Jacquian Williams a 6th round pick... you get the picture.
3. Saying that Landry only does one thing is extremely short sighted? Does Von Miller only do one thing? Does Khalil Mack only do one thing? How about prime Clay? That one thing is pretty much the only thing. If you don't think Landry is versatile you just haven't watched him enough, and that's fine. He creates rush from two, three, and four point stances in 6, 7 and wide 9 tech. He also created interior pressures from a 2 point stance, beating guards and centers. He's 6'3" 250, not 6'6" 290. He can be moved around.

I will say I wouldn't want to copy the Giants model because it doesn't protect against the fast TEs and pass catching RB screens that have been popular recently with how spread offense is starting to leave a mark on the NFL. Those things were also one of the Packers biggest weaknesses last year. I don't think grabbing a pure pass rusher solves as many needs as aiming at an inside versatile linebacker like Edmunds or Roquan, since they help shore up that man coverage against TEs and RBs, and well as help out zone coverage. I agree that Landry would be be a huge help for the team, but not at the expense of passing the top ILBs or Safety prospects imo.
Also calling an edge rusher the QB of the defense is like calling the punter the QB of the special teams. Means nothing. MLB or SS does more for a defense to cover every avenue of attack and communicate/perform effectively. Von miller helps out the defense when the Broncos have great corners. Kalil Mack did little to stop the Raiders from getting shredded when he was rushing, but he is a guy with good inside versatily and coverage skills too. Clay even had a resurgance when he started roaming and playing in the middle. If the packers play Joe Thomas covering a lethal TE or Davon House against a good slant running WR, a great QB will identify that presnap and have the ball in their hands before the pass rush gets home. Thats what killed the 2016 packers. Their pass rush was fine, but Gunter was lining up against Julio Jones.
I agree Landry would be a huge upgrade to the team. That being said, I personally value the top ILB and CB/S prospects higher. I didn't do much research in the draft class so I may be wrong about the individuals, but my principle is described in my post.

Don't get it twisted. Pass rushers are quarterbacks for two reasons. One, the good ones are almost always taken early. You see wayyyyyy more successful cornerbacks and safeties taken later in drafts than you do pass rushers or quarterbacks. Two, they are paid that way. The only franchise tag higher than DE? Quarterback. "pass rushers are quarterbacks" as a concept has nothing to do with comms.
The other thing is this class is way deeper at defensive back than it is at pass rushers. Way deeper.

Like you Ross, I too hold the NFL draft in high esteem. It ranks very high on my list of things that interest me relating to the NFL (shown below).
Must admit that I don't put in time I used on the prospects. Maybe I'll look at some in the top 100 with any detail. But thanks to you and others like you, I can create a quixotic list of must-haves for the Pack.
What I do now more, than ever is look at everything I can find AFTER the Pack select a player. Saves me time and gives me a better idea as to how they may have done.

It all comes down to value at the draft position. It's a deep draft for CB, if Landry or McGlinchey are available they should take them.

it's interesting how drastically different we can all view prospects. i disagree with a few of your assessments but love to hear why you believe what you believe, this is what makes the draft so fun to me!

And it doesn't just apply to fans. The 32 teams often have wildly different views on the talent as well.
Its one of the reasons I find it so hilarious/frustrating when during the draft fans go crazy because a team picked a player "18 slots too early" LOL

FWIW, tiers are a very useful way of categorizing talent, but it is usually not segregated by position, and that's where typically the usefulness lies. It's a way of visualizing the overall talent pool in a given draft, to help teams make sure they aren't over-reaching on a need pick and passing up better overall talent.

yeah I know what a draft board looks like. This, as with everything here was skewed towards positional needs in green bay.
