Packers Calendar: Front Seven Workout at NFL Combine

Defensive linemen and linebackers work out starting at 8:00 a.m. CT on the NFL Network.

INDIANAPOLIS—If there's one place the Green Bay Packers could use reinforcement on their roster, it's the defensive front seven.

Defensive line, linebacker, it really doesn't matter. The Packers could use both.

Inside linebacker is an obvious need. The Packers need a starter they can insert into the starting lineup on Day 1.

They could also use a defensive lineman, although the immediate need could depend on what happens with B.J. Raji and Letroy Guion in free agency.

The Packers will get to see these positions up close on Sunday as they go through on-field workouts at Lucas Oil Stadium at the NFL Combine. Television coverage starts at 8:00 a.m. CT on the NFL Network.

Players will go through measured drills—the 40-yard dash, jumps, shuttles—in addition to position-specific drills.

Defensive backs, meanwhile, are the only group yet to do their workout. They'll do the bench press, psychological testing (the Wonderlic) and interview with NFL teams.

While I think today is an important day, I always try to remind myself that AJ Hawk killed it at the combine.

Watching the ILBers at the combine today was an underwhelming experience. IMO, the Packers shouldn't take any ILBer in the first round and should only take Kendricks or Shaq Thompson if they fall to them in the second round.

Front seven, sure. I would think that there is going to be somebody at #30 that would be a front seven player.

But in recent years I've really come to understand the BPA thing. The selection of Jordy Nelson was the one that illustrated that.

Uhhh, who might that be - outside of Daniels (who already had it in him). Now, I'm not saying some guys didn't step up last season. I'm only speaking on the "meanness" you mentioned.

Tramon Williams
Sam Barrington
Sean Richardson
TJ Lang
Josh Sitton

It stops there.

((And I'm not attacking you. Please don't take it the wrong way. Just my observation.))

Paul Dawson had a truly awful performance at the combine. He says he is a football player not a track star. There is a certain amount of truth in pointing out those two things are not necessarily the same.

But a LB that runs the 40 in 4.9 is sort of unheard of in the NFL, isn't it? In other drills that measure explosion more than speed, Dawson wasn't any better. College game tape does not lie but it also doesn't show the speed at which the NFL game is played. What does not show up on college game film could be a fatal flaw at the NFL level.

It certainly raises a red flag with Dawon, on top of the character questions.

I would think that too, but one name sticks out to me: Vontaz Burfict. He had a horrible combine and had character issues, but he is arguably a top-5 talent in the NFL at ILB.
