Injury Update at Packers Training Camp: Who's Returning? Who's Dropping Out?
Offensive lineman Don Barclay is the latest to sustain an injury at Packers practice on Tuesday.
Offensive lineman Don Barclay going down was the unfortunate news of the day on Tuesday at Packers practice. New information also arose on safety Morgan Burnett, who head coach Mike McCarthy confirmed had an oblique strain, unrelated to his ankle injury from a week prior.
Dropping Out of Practice
Offensive lineman Don Barclay, right knee
Barclay suffered an injury to his right knee at practice on Tuesday during a team pressure blitz drill, getting caught in a compromising position. In the immediate aftermath of practice, McCarthy still didn't know much about the extent of the injury, saying Barclay was currently being evaluated and that the coach would know more in the evening. As a top backup at several positions on the offensive line, the Packers are going to have to rely more on other players on the team for as long as Barclay remains out, such as Derek Sherrod at both tackle positions and Lane Taylor at both guard positions.
Returning to Practice
Linebacker Brad Jones, unknown
It's doesn't appear as if Jones suffered an injury at Monday's practice after dropping out for a period of time. In any case, he was back working with the starters on Tuesday, giving little if any cause for concern from a health standpoint.
Still Out (anticipated return in parentheses)
Safety Morgan Burnett, oblique strain (unknown)
Wide receiver Jared Abbrederis, knee (2015 presumably)
Defensive lineman Jerel Worthy, lower back (indefinitely)
Defensive lineman Letroy Guion, hamstring (indefinitely)
Tight end Colt Lyerla, knee (several weeks)
Running back Michael Hill (day to day)
Safety Tanner Miller, ankle (indefinitely)

Any reason for the delay in putting Abbrederis on the IR?
And the Barclay injury sounds bad. Thankfully Sherrod is having a nice camp so far, so that lessens the blow a bit. I feel like Tretter/Linsley/Taylor can be suitable as backup guards.

I guess they are probably waiting to put him on IR at first cutdowns? probably not many players out there that they really feel are worth bringing in right now.
I have wondered if Tretter could play G. He was a T in college. Has had more time to learn the offense. I think Linsley could probably go in at C and they could put Tretter at G if they had to? (that is if Tretter would be the starting C).

That's my thinking too. Whoever loses the center job will be asked to learn guard too. If you're only dressing 7 O-linemen, someone needs to have versatility.

He'd have to pass through waivers first if they place him on I.R. now. That's how the Patriots picked up Tyler Gaffney.

Oh, right. Thanks, Brian.
That's a different rule than during the regular season, yeah? Why the difference?

I don't think they want teams carrying more than 90 players under contract during the offseason. Keeps things equal.

I didn't know that either. Thanks Brian.
