Cory's Corner: Respect Is Perfect For Love

It didn't take long, but Jordan Love already has the respect of the locker room. Pretty amazing for a guy that has only played in 157 snaps in three years.

Respect means an awful lot — I would argue that it means more for a guy that has started one game in three years.

‘He did it the right way,” said Aaron Jones on Jordan Love. “He waited his time and you never heard one peep or complaint out of him.”

What a huge confidence builder for Love. Here’s a guy that has never been the starting quarterback entering training camp and he’s already got the support of his teammates one month before camp opens.

“We all love Jordan here,” Jones said.

That seems like a small thing or something that everyone should be saying. But that is genuine respect you cannot fake. No matter how weird or awkward the final moments of Aaron Rodgers’ tenure in Green Bay were, this team has fully embraced the Utah State standout.

That doesn’t just say a lot about Love, but it says a lot about this team. When you get a new co-worker, how willing are you to bend over backwards for a guy that hasn’t proven if he can actually do the job?

And the funny thing is, he still may end up being an average quarterback. But at least this team is going to make the transition a heck of a lot easier than if they resisted and got upset about Love’s eventual role.

Off the field, Love has done everything right. He has made and mended relationships. He has earned the trust of countless veterans and coaches and he has even made people think that this team can win a division title with a huge question mark at the game’s most important position.

If he can do all of those things without actually playing, just imagine when he converts his first third-and-7 with an edge rusher breathing down his neck. On his way out, Rodgers complained about the Packers’ way of building and maintaining relationships — but oddly enough, relationship building has turned into a strong skill for the next quarterback this franchise traded up to get.

So even though Love may think he can go out and win some hard-fought NFC North games, he now knows that his teammates think he can too. And that should be all he needs to succeed.

I’ve been saying for a while that I don’t know how good Love is going to be, but if his teammates have his back, why would I doubt that?

“We’re all going to lay it on the line for him,” Jones said.

The entire team has seen Love’s development in practice every day for years. Love was ready to take over QB1 last year.

We’re hearing comments from players on both sides of the ball, which means our own defenders have a front row seat seeing the competitive level of play, and what Love is capable of in leading this offense. Jaire Alexander & Kenny Clark come to mind. Bakhtiari too. Veteran players who know.

Are they just pumping him up? Possible, but my guess is no. Love had legit skills entering the league 3 years ago. He’s handled adversity admirably throughout that time with a maturity beyond his 24 years of age.

His leadership skills have been out there for all to see with his off-season work with other players, and the inclusive attitude shared on the subject of spreading the ball around.

Our “problem” there might be some skill players who may prove to be difficult challenges to defend: Watson, Musgrave, Doubs, Reed, Toure, etc.

How many matchup nightmares can we have on offense? With a solid OL? LaFleur flexing unscouted looks for how many weeks to start the season? Gee, we haven’t run Jet concepts in years!

Young, dynamic players playing fast with reckless abandon…

Good problems to have.

I think Musgrave & Reed will explode onto the scene, with Watson elevating next level in explosive plays.

GG, welcome back!

Great comment. Seeing as how JL10 was QB#1 last preseason, and throws at least competently and also has a cannon, I'd find it very strange if he didn't have the respect of this roster.

Hopefully they get early wins and that increases! Nothing helps a team like winning ...

Yeah, the LoveGun. I failed to mention that in closing. Teamwork!!! Thanks, Sic!

It is a factor that I’m confident will prove to be undeniable in the comparisons that will undoubtedly present once we’re well underway.

That’s why I mentioned those specific players. Their game is taking to top off of virtually any defense. That’s what they were drafted for. Insanely dynamic qualities we have not seen in such numbers in Green Bay. Prior to this most recently it was MVS, and that’s it.

I didn’t even mention Melton, a player conveniently left off most listings/way too early 53s…

Then, another player Gutekunst added who isn’t the fastest, but has a sneaky way of taking the top off of defenses is Dontayvion Wicks. Add Kraft here too. He’s faster than he looks. Averaged 12.2 ypc in his career, and ran a 4.62… Heath? 16.2 ypc. Wow. Is Heath 40 fast? No. But, he’s football fast enough to put up those numbers at Ole Miss.

I mention these last 3-4 to show the true depth we have as receiving options for JL, and that canon! Deep!

I don't think Jaire is type of guy to falsely build a guy up. In fact, I believe that Jaire would outright speak his dissatisfaction if he had any... I also do not believe that Love has to be HOF caliber for us to be contenders. If he can just be "Very good", we will be fine, and have a shot every post-season.

My best prediction is 9-8 with a possibility for the playoffs.
I'm bracing myself for worse, holding out hope for better.
I would think LaFleur is giddy with all the possibilities on this offense with a willing QB.
I would think the players are thrilled with the opportunity to show themselves as ready for the NFL as starters, maybe even stars.
I would think it'll be a lot of fun to watch.

In the only area he could demonstrate it, JL has already shown he learned from Rodgers during his apprenticeship.

"Hopefully, it's an indicator he picked up a lot of the other stuff, too."

I just hope he will not wait for last moment to snap the ball. Because it gives huge advantage to opponent D. I also hope he will try to help rookies to develop confidence by not throwing that blame game publicly. I hope he will accept play calls from play caller, not trying to outsmart D and fool his own team or himself. There is a lot of rest I just do not want to write here, as that will be to long post.

I don't know if you've noticed, but, Love is almost the exact opposite if my memory serves. Every time I've seen him in preseason or the limited game snaps he's had, he wastes no time getting the ball snapped and the play into action. Quicker than a 3 count as I recall... ? Anybody else recall this?

I love (sarcasm) how fans continue to question so much about the decisions made by the Hall-of-Fame QB exiting the team this spring. You'd almost think he was a wasted draft pick by the comments made by fans. Rodgers didn't throw blame. He had every chance to do that, as drops by WRs and a defense that cratered at the end of games certainly impacted the team's ability to be as successful in the playoffs as we wished. It wasn't all on Rodgers. The only thing Rodgers ever did was hold young WRs, TEs etc to a high standard in practice and in games. And what did we get out of that? We got an incredibly productive run of WRs that didn't produce when playing for other teams. Rodgers' high standards helped his team; it didn't hurt them.

Micah Hyde was asked about Rodgers early this year and he said:

“I love 12. That’s my guy,” Hyde said. He added, “He’s a loving, great person. He’s one of the best teammates I ever had.”

The only guy complaining about Rodgers that was actually a successful WR was Greg Jennings, and Rodgers helped make him a ton of money.

And all that last minute snap stuff had another side; #12 could read the defense and make a play they couldn't defend, and the stellar output of the Rodgers' led offenses clearly showed he knew what he was doing. You can also see that LaFleur was bummed to lose Rodgers. You can see it in his comments before and after the trade. If Rodgers was such a detriment to the team, wouldn't LaFleur be jumping for joy to say goodbye to him? No, because what he brought to the team was so much more than what his weaknesses were.

The truth is, Rodgers did outsmart the D and probably knew more about offensive football than his head coach. How could he not have, given his experience in the league. Brady and Peyton played the same way in their final seasons, running their own offenses and calling the plays. Hall of Fame QBs know enough to do that. You don't like the outcome? Fine.

Wait a few years when Love is a seasoned QB and I bet he does the same kind of stuff as the long-tenured QBs do. He just doesn't have the knowledge to do it now.

I understand pointing out Rodgers' faults and being angry that we didn't go further in the playoffs. I don't understand the constant negative comments about him without any awareness that we got to watch one of the best ever to play the game in green and gold for a decade and a half. No gratitude for the good years, just whining about the last 2-3 seasons.

I've always prefaced my "negative comments" - personal observations - with the recognition that 12 had a magical 10 year run as the most talented thrower of a FB of anybody I've ever seen.
That existed at the same time as him being a self-absorbed jerk.
Me stats always seemed more important than we stats to 12.
I didn't recognize it at the time. It became clear the last 3 years.
There was a long run of looking forward to Sunday's game followed by the mlf years, even though they won, not as much fun to watch.

“Rodgers didn’t throw blame.”

Wha?

“The only guy complaining about Rodgers that was actually a successful WR was Greg Jennings, and Rodgers helped make him a ton of money.”

Who made who “a ton of money?”

It was Jennings who told Rodgers the Steelers were dropping him on end zone corner routes to make the only TD Rodgers threw in the 2nd half of Super Bowl XLV happen.

Have you considered for one second that without Jennings pointing that out to Aaron Rodgers, and Rogers throwing that very ball which Jennings turned into a TD on the very next series, that maybe we don’t win that Super Bowl???

Take away that ONE THROW Jennings told Rodgers to make, and Rodgers did very little in the 2nd half of Super Bowl XLV.

FOUR 3 & outs in a row prior to that in Q3.

PUNT
PUNT
PUNT
PUNT

Revisionist much?

Aaron Rodgers actually pitched Greg Jennings to Carlos Rodgers and the 49ers, in real time during a game!

2012 was a contract year for Jennings, yeah, that same guy who helped make that Championship Belt happen just one year earlier. (Jennings caught 2 of the 3 TDs Rodgers threw in Super Bowl XLV, along with catching 36 of Aaron Rodgers’ career TDs to that point… and, not to mention, the player who caught Aaron Rodgers’ very first NFL TD!!!)

From Golf Digest:

Jennings was approached mid-game by Niners corner Carlos Rodgers, who jokingly asked the receiver why he was running so many short routes. Jennings sniped back with "You know how it is. Contract year." Rodgers overheard this and stepped in. Here's how Jennings recalled the exchange, per Bleacher Report writer Tyler Dunne's piece:

That's when Rodgers stepped in to say, per Jennings, "You guys should get him at the end of the year."

Come again?

Jennings walked back to the huddle speechless.

"I don't think he realizes what he said and the impact that it had," Jennings says. "Had the shoe been on the other foot and I said, 'Hey, man, I should come and play with your quarterback,' he would've been so offended by that. But when it comes out of his mouth—and we all know there's truth behind jokes—for him to say that and just act as though everything was the same? It just wasn't."

Did you forget this? Talk about a knife in the back!!!

What kind of teammate does that? AR essentially ran one of the Packers best WRs out of town. Single handedly.

I didn’t even get into the Jermichael Finley stuff.

You and stockholder can keep your candles lit for #8, but, give me a break. I’m not buying the revisionist history stuff. Sorry. Nope.

Good riddance.

By comparison, the untested QB1 Jordan Love is a breath of fresh air. Bring on 2023! There’s plenty to be excited about as a Packer fan.

He's not rooting for Love's demise, is he? He just has a different opinion. He just seems to think #12 still gave GB the best chance to win and we don't know yet whether Love can help the team win the Division often enough to threaten a title run. I don't see that as wanting Love to fail.

You nailed it, respect is “earned” on the football field.
Anything else is fantasy football. If this chump goes 6 & 11, or 3 & 14, we’ll be in the same boat as most other teams knowing they either have a QB, or they don’t.

I’ll be a fan when he looks like the next great QB in GB, and 1 second before that. Respect is earned.

Most GB fans are all about production. And if a guy doesn't produce (at WR, at Edge Rusher, at RB, etc) they are ready to dump the guy. Fans hated the Rashan Gary pick; fans thought Davante Adams should be cut after 2015. Just because some people want to hold off on praising Jordan Love until they see what he does on the field doesn't mean they are not a GB fan. Fans want to win and if Love doesn't look like he can help do that, nobody will stay a fan.

True, it doesn't matter what teammates think about love right now or what fans think. What matters is how he progresses on the field and whether he can help this team win the Division and make the playoffs most seasons. That's really all that matters. And none of us know yet whether he can do that. Only time will tell. His predecessor was one of the best to ever do it. We rarely lost the NFC North, and it was usually due to an injury to #12.

We shall see what Jordan Love can do soon enough.

Cory said, "he still may end up being an average quarterback".

How good is the average QB at the NFL level? I say that's pretty good. How would Bart Star be rated against todays QBs without the team he had around him?

Where can the Packers go with an excellent team around him? HATE to bring them up but look what a good team with a rookie 7th round QB did last season. HE had to get hurt to put them out of contention for the NFC championship.

We'll be just fine. I'll revise that with; We'll be just fine as long as we get our lines where they "should" be.

But do the Packers have an "excellent team" around Jordan Love? There are a bunch of unknowns, a bunch of young guys who might be great or might not make it in the NFL. San Francisco had 6 players chosen as All-Pro for 2022 tying the most of any team. Green Bay? Green Bay had two: the kick returner as first team and Jaire as second team. We're a long way from having an excellent team.

I remember some posts here, and some statements of former Packers players and other announcers on TV or podcast that claim how they do not believe Aaron Jones until someone from secondary (like Woodson did for FPQB) praised Jordan. They stated how defenders are better in judgement on QBs.

Well, the very first player who praised Love was Campbell, he was first who claimed that Jordan Love is ready. Than you have Preston and now Jaire. Not to mention Eagles CB Darious Slay who clearly said after the game that they believed how they will pile up their sack numbers and # of INT in that 4th Q after Jordan Love entered the game. And that they were surprised and he admitted that he thinks Jordan Love is ready to lead NFL team.

Still we have some posters here who, contrary to all mentioned players still claims that Jordan is bust. With nothing to suppirt their claims, but their support and "love" for FPQB.

‘He did it the right way,” said Aaron Jones on Jordan Love. “He waited his time and you never heard one peep or complaint out of him.”

“We all love Jordan here,” Jones said."

I think this ENTIRE football team feels this way about Love, I know many of us in the fan base do. Jordan Love is all about Football and The Green Bay Packers. He's not looking for any and every platform to speak on his opinions. The dude is all about meshing with his teammates, growing with his teammates, and getting consistent with his teammates.

Love KNOWS it could be rough for the first few weeks of the season as this offense begins to form an identity, as players learn what's expected. BUT what I've appreciated about Jordan Love from the start is he's doing everything he can do to make the transition as smooth as possible. Something we didn't see from the former QB for the last few years...

Well, at least until he was traded to the Jets that is!

I think you should bookmark this comment for 15 years (if Love makes it) and see how he is about meshing with guys almost 20 years younger than him, and doing off season workouts. He's doing all the things a young QB has to do to win over a team, because he does not have the resume of winning, of performing on the field.

I wonder if Love becomes outspoken about his opinions, if fans will still like him . . . is it a QBs job to only answer questions the way you want them answered?

The first American Football match was played on November 6th, 1869, between Rutgers and Princeton, using rules based upon soccer. Rule changes by Walter Camp, "The Father of American Football," drawn up in 1880 established the snap, the LOS, 11 player teams and the concept of downs.

Abe Lincoln was assassinated April 15th, 1865.

But, yeah... can Jordan Love play football?

Favre's, Rodgers' and Love's best college seasons respectively:
BF 11 G, 178 Comp, 319 Att, 55.8 Comp%, 2271 yds, 7.1 Y/A, 16 TD, 5 INT Rate 129.0

AR 12 G, 209 Comp, 316 Att, 66.1 Comp%, 2566 yds, 8.1 Y/A, 24 TD, 8 INT Rate 154.3

JL 13 G, 267 Comp, 417 Att, 64.0 Comp%, 3567 yds, 9.4 Y/A, 32 TD, 6 INT Rate 158.3

Jordan Love is a Christian. He is grounded. Anything good about him is a Blessing....Anything wrong about him is made by his decision....Just like every man. JL has a solid OL, 2 good RB's , Watson would have been OROY if not for injury and AR trust. Doubs looks like he is back in business as a possession WR. Reeds tape is really good and fights for every contested catch. Both RB's can catch well. Toure is a slick route guy. Kraft is a solid TE and appears tougher to bring down than Musgrave and a better blocker. Deguara has not been used much, but he shows flashes. ML will scheme players open and several have speed to burn. The defense should take a step as well as Doubs and Watson. Does the Eagles game where JL came in and instantly played better than QB1 not give you any confidence. AR won 2-MVP's because he had a top 3 #1 WR and solid team surrounding him...Just like JL has right now. AR is gone....move on from it like most have. He's happier right now than any time I remember since the SB win. He has definitely moved on....Worst case scenario JL does poor or gets injured....Like AR did 2x holding the ball too long and we got a top pick and another #1 from the jets to draft the "BEST" QB in the draft. I watched the Eagles game and I saw a young fella dealing all over the field and A.Jones whiffed on a nice long ball that was right on target. AR was extremely accurate and one of the best regular season QB's...But not a playoff QB...The plays were there to be made and he did not make them. Good times ahead GPG..."LOVE"-IT

You keep repeating these stats like they mean something. There's been a lot of QBs with much better numbers than these that failed in the NFL.

Then you would know I don’t normally leave the arguments questioning whether Jordan Love is up to the task to statistics alone.

Graham Harrell was offered as a counter. Fine.

There are Pro traits JL has that GH did not have. There are other characteristics that set the best of the best NFL QBs apart from the rest.

Are you in a rush? Let it play out.

It didn't stop him from kicking butt on the mat. Abe would make a great DE.

Abe Lincoln didn't play football, of course. But at 6' 4" his long limbs helped him to be an amazing wrestler, I believe he had a record of one loss in 300 matches. In 1992 he was not inducted into the wrestling hall of fame, but was recognized by the Hall and "inducted" as an "Outstanding American" (yeah, that's 1992, not 1892).

Abe's three-cone, and rail-splitting would have skewed his RAS at the Combine. Scouts would question his decision making, too. A lot of people still think he never fully recovered from that whole "would it kill you to take me to a play once in awhile?" incident with the Mrs.

That Abe Lincoln was quite a guy...the type of guy that deserves to have a great big statue of him located in a place like Washington DC.

What makes this year's squad special is everyone is within a few years of each other, age wise. Most have come from successful HS & Big college programs. They understand respect, leadership and are all in the same "communications" range. No intimidating age gaps. Respect is earned. Not handed out like brats at a tailgate. Players have to earn it. JL is hitting all the right buttons on and off the field. Accepted, his 3 years or so of learning, listening & observing. He feels he is ready and more importantly his teammates feel he is ready. The coastal elite press & TV bobble heads loud mouths see no value here in this small market area so they ignore it or downplay it and give it a "who cares" shoulder shrug. Little do they know. That's good for GB. Keep the glare of lights & stupid reporter interviews to minimum. They'll be sniffing around soon enough, by that time the team will be on it's way. JL will be fine. He knows it. The team knows it. And soon so will we. GPG !!!

I wouldn't give a brat to just anybody at a tailgate party. The'd also have to bring their own beer (does that go without saying?)

Would/will give anyone here at CHTV one though if/when they stop by. GPG!

"But Love has to be judged on GAME SITUATIONS." THANK YOU Captain Obvious. I know I was judging the $50MM Man in game situations the last couple of years and he was definitely not worth the price of the ticket come playoff time, and last year basically the entire season. Will JL be a first ballot HOFer in year 1 or 2 or 3? Nope. But if he continues improvement and generates wins grows as a leader, his team mates will have his back.

If this year's draft is similar to last years, there will be many future wins.

It's not just arm talent but mental tenacity.
It's cooperating with coaches, in preparation for games and in adjustments during games, to outsmart opponents.
It's working with teammates as a leader.
It's attention to details.
It's poise under pressure.
It's competing through the last second of the game.
***
I'm hopeful and even excited about Love, but we'll see over weeks, months, and years.
As perspective, the Packers have ended the last three seasons with head-scratching and heartbreaking losses on our home turf of Lambeau Field.
It's time for a change.
Fortunately, there's a lot to like in the change to Love, and in the teammates surrounding him.
It seems the Packers are bursting with talent as potential, and the suspense is seeing whether that talent will be fulfilled on the field.
About a month to training camp . . .

"during games, to outsmart opponents." I like that but hope it won't be needed.

Swisch, let's change it to; "during games, to outexecute opponents." let them have and try to outsmart US.

GOOD post, Swisch!

Since another brought up Abe Lincoln, allow to me to use another icon I would think some would know a little about.

Al Jolson was a great vaudeville actor, singer and the first talking movie, IIRC, was made about him, called The Jazz Singer, but he would perform first, and then say" You ain't seen nothing yet." He would then continue and dazzle the audience.

The times have changed, because now we applaud and assign the label to a performance before the performer even begins based on the things his show mates say, about 'practice'.

"You ain't seen nothing yet" is very appropriate here concerning Jordan Loves' performance, though NOT in the same way as Al Jolson.

Who knows, perhaps it will be as fitting for Love as it was for Jolson, someday sooner than later. Keep the ticket stub, just don't put it in with the other iconic stubs yet. Let's at least see some full-live performance first.

I really believe the players here are glad that Rodgers is gone and took "his" buddies with him. This is a fresh start, new QB, team and coaching staff will be in control now of the offense not some spoiled I know better QB type of person. However I personally think it would be beneficial for team and offense if Mercedes Lewis was still on team with his blocking ability and knowledge to help the young TES! Will admit am shaky in much faith in Barry!

I really believe that Lazard was a team first, teammate, good guy. He came up the very hardest way.

It was time for him to get paid. He couldn't have made anywhere NEAR what he gets now, with the Packers. More power to him and good luck.

Wish him well. He could come back someday.

You don't think Cobb was a team first guy? He lived and breathed GB Packers. He was a perfect Packer. Don't diss him because he is friends with a guy you don't like.

You do as you please and I respect that as you should what others say or do. Never said I didn't like Rodgers, was his attitude I don't like in his last 4-5 years.

True, marpag1. Spot on.

At the same time, I recall living out west, and staying connected to fellow Packer fans through a new thing called a "Packers Forum," became a kind of lifeline to all things good. A healthy escape from the world. Those were the Holmgren days that lead us to Super Bowl XXXI.

Oh, the gnashing of teeth during the Mike Sherman era...!!!

To me, it's all good, both the positive and negative commentary. Keeps us all in check. A lot of good stuff in front of us, or not. We'll see, but in the meantime, we can connect some dots.

I like what I've seen this year, thus far. More. More. More. I believe firmly that there is so much promise with this Packers team moving forward. A lot of good appears to be converging for the Packers.
