Confessions of a Polluted Mindset - Riding the Jet Stream

The Weekly Packers Brain Drain from Jersey Al.

The Wave - How embarrasing that the Packers are going to have some players record a PSA to show on the scoreboard screens during game to remind fans not to do the wave or "Go Pack Go" chants when the team is on offense.

Hefty Hefty Heflin - It's only 2 preseason games, but I'm taking Heflin over Lancaster right now. He has a motor that Lancaster can not match and he is very aware of where the ball is at all times. He handles double-teams and is able to disengage to pursue the ball. Add in the ability to get some pressure on the quarterback (something Lancaster is never going to do) and the Packers have a real find here.

Kylin Hill - the RB3 competition is over. This pass pro rep is super impressive for a rookie.

TJ Slaton - We saw good improvement from Slaton. Last week my complaint was his head was down and wasn't following the ball. He must have heard it from the coaches as his head was up most of the time and as a result, he was around the ball much more and didn't run himself out of the play as much. A nice step in the right direction of finding that consistency the coaches want.

Sternberger - I hate to say this but when he catches a pass out in the flat, he reminds me of Richard Rodgers. Looks like he's running in slow motion and goes down like a sack of potatoes on first contact.

Braden - He got a long look at right tackle versus the Jets, and while he played fairly well, there was one problem area that stood out to me. He has a big issue with speed on the edge. I saw a few examples where a Jets player with a quick getoff flew by Braden, He was bailed out with some RB help, or a pass getting out quickly, but I would be a bit concerned about him as a tackle.

Royce keeps rolling - As I pointed out last week, he gets way too high out of his stance (could this be the reason for stepping on Benkert's foot twice?). However, man to man, chest to chest, he wins every battle. I think this guy is the definition of "country strong."

Oh my Yosh, Nijman was better - Talk about turning things around quickly, Yosh was much more active/agressive versus the Jets than the previous week. Perhaps the live reps scrimmaging versus the Jets helped build his confidence. Not sure what it was but he looked like he belonged out there. Also, he impressed me with how well get got to the second level to help with downfield blocks.

Don't sleep on Malik - I've been saying this since camp started and Taylor has showed why. He catches everything, gets open when you need a first down, is a very good downfield blocker, and is a key special teams contributor. He is the reason the Packers will keep at least six wide receivers. Sorry Funch...

Can he develop Ento a good tackler?  Kabion has been impressive for his relatively quick transition from wide receiver to defensive back but one thing still remians - he tackles like a wide receiver. That's not to say he isn't willing, but his form is not very good. Lots of work still needed there...

I can't believe "The Wave" is STILL a thing! If you google it you get a few answers but I'll go with the one where Krazy George started it at a Oakland A's vs NY Yankees playoff game in 1981 30 years ago.

Now I'm a Packers fan to the bone and like 99% of Packers fans pride myself as being a more knowledgeable fan than most fan bases. The fact the Packers have to put out a PSA to fans to stop doing something that harms the team when on offense AND died at least 29 years ago IS embarrassing. Common people, a few LESS beverages with barley, hops, and yeast would probably fix this issue just as fast.

Great clip of Kylin Hill. Loved how he kept looking for the man he needed to block and the catch was probably more impressive. Loved how he first got far enough downfield, but then turned his body for the QB to make an easier throw AND kept both feet in. The best part? The Jets coach who was obviously PISSED! Well not the best but a damn good bonus!

I'm happy about Royce Newman, but I'm not too crazy about starting 2 rookies right next to each other against the Saints. Bakhtiari can't get back fast enough!

The wave maybe old and done at the wrong time at times, what the heck is wrong with people having fun, especially this screwed up and times! When people have time including coaches to pick this out and complain time to sit like statues at games! Part of attending games I always thought was have fun, cheer and make noise other wise stay home and holler at the TV!

You make noise when the defense plays, do you even understand the basics of play calling? You're supposed to make it hard to communicate for the OPPOSING TEAM, not your own.

The problem with that is that it’s now a legitimate and acknowledged issue - and an open invitation to opposing fans when the packers go on the road.

Better that the GB coaches and players improve their communication skills and tactics.

I guess your IQ football is really lacking to even ask such an inane question. It is so obvious that you are quiet during the time your O got the ball. I would think any nut job would not even ask that question. Did I say anything about O or D know figuring it was obvious when to do wave or not! Some people just make you really wonder about humanity and its future! I agree you, your FB IQ is more like below zero!

Dang Al, this article mirrors my thoughts almost exactly. Heflin > Lancaster, improvements from Slaton and Yosh, and the Sternberger comment relating him to Richard Rodgers is spot on. I called Rodgers "Hindenburg" because a corner would hit him in the leg and he would slowly fall to the ground every time ..... oh the humanity!

It does seem there are a lot of talented young prospects this year though until they play regular season games all it comes down to is potential. Hill was a steal and he will be a significant contributor even this season. Taylor belongs on the team period! I too would say goodbye Funchess unless he ends up taking over some of Sternbergers role as a move/receiving TE down the middle. He would never be a blocker. Yosh is the surprise! Way too early but wow would that be something if he developed into a serviceable LT? If he did think about how next year's draft could focus on the DL and linebacker positions early on. Possibly WR depending on who is resigned.

Think about the OL moving forward (this year and in 2022) if all these young OL workout with the biggest question mark at the moment being Yosh. Royce sounds to be a great addition as a starting Guard. Myers at Center. Runyan solidifies the interior of the OL as a Guard. Throw in the 25 year old Jenkins who with these young players will likely allow the Packers the luxury to keep him outside at Left or even potentially Right Tackle. With Yosh potentially pushing for a starting Tackle position in 2022. Could he play RT as the Packers have David and Jenkins at LT?

Everything about team appears to be looking up! Go Gutey!!!

How lame is our wuss coach that he is more concerned about the Wave than improving the team? I hate the Wave too but, c’mon man, quit being a bunch of weenies and grow a pair! By your incessant whining you hav insured that you will see multiple waves in every stadium you play in for the entire season. I’m embarrassed for these babies. I live in MN and since hearing about whiny-baby LaFleur, Vikings fans have assured me they will be doing some waves to see if they can get him to cry.

If you watch football rather than attend for a spectacle and support a team you don’t do anything to distract your team. Pretty basic principle. There’s plenty of time to do so when the opponents are trying to make calls etc. Baffles me that people object to this request and yet post on a Packers blog. Stay at home and let people interested in the game attend and not dilute home advantage.

LaFleur is the farthest thing from whiny . . . he's trying to help his team, while clueless fans would do something that potentially hurts the offense. If you were coaching, wouldn't you deal with that? And how exactly did you arrive at the conclusion that he cares more about the wave than about improving the team? Count up all his comments and see how many are about improvement and how many are about the wave. Guess which one tops the other? Oh, yeah, improving the team, Egbert, which is exactly what he's done since he arrived in GB and went to back to back NFC Championships.

Seems to me it will be a tough call between Funchess and Taylor to cut either, they both catch everything thrown their way with Funchess the bigger target and wingspan. Either if cut will play for somebody no doubt. STENBURGLAR if kept only steals a position someone else should have. He can't stay healthy and a plods along like a slowly melting snowman come end of winter!

I like Funchess and think they should keep him, but not because he Catches everything thrown his way. He has one of the lowest catch percentage amongst WR’s while playing at Carolina. I think he will improve that with a more accurate QB throwing him the rock thou. If he can increase the Catch. Percentage into the mid 60’s this year he will be a great addition.

Keep Funchess as a move TE/WR in place of Sternberger. Funchess is a willing blocker (albeit not a great blocker) and is a much better receiver than Sternberger. And I totally agree Murf, he will have a much better catch percentage with Arod throwing to him than with Cam Newton.

Funchess will benefit from not being a conventional perimeter starter as he most often was used. He’s much better, generally and catching percentage wise, on routs over the middle than he is down the sideline.

I”m going to put Heflin over Lancaster into the “be careful what you ask for” category. Yes, there are things good about Heflin, but we haven’t seen him much against #1’s and/or against regular season games. In addition, sans Clark, Lancaster has the highest ratings from PFF. I’d love to be wrong, but My uneducated guess is that he will need a year of grooming on the PS.

Lancaster remains more stout than Heflin. He’s an immensely strong man. I want Heflin on the team, but I think we should keep both and have Heflin back up and spell Slaton and let Slaton spell Clark. Keep Lancaster for the obvious run downs.

If we are all in we keep Funchess. I like Taylor and I am impressed by him, but Funchess is too good to trade for a future pick in an all in year.

As it happens, I think Funchess will be the offensive part of TE 2 with the H-Backs and Lewis picking up the blocking. Among other things, Sternberger is a dreadful blocker. Funchess is actually decent for a WR, that helps, but I doubt the team would trust Sternberger to make key blocks, which is why he’s not likely to see the field much even on a return.

Had Nuata stayed healthy, Sternberger may have lost out to him due to blocking. Both Funchess and Taylor make the team. Sternberger is gone unless the injury gods intervene once his suspension ends.

Yes, but he’s only going to be taken as a move TE, because he’s dreadful blocking. This is why he never sees the field. He’s a weak move TE. That’s why I believe Nuata had moved ahead of him despite being slower. Good blocker, good hands, OK speed over decent speed, up and down hands, unreliable and weak blocker. Blocking is a massive part of a traditional TE2 role.

We've only seen two games with Heflin, so replacing a serviceable Lancaster with a UDFA is a risk. However Lancaster has fully matured as a pro and is strictly a run stuffer. Slaton is a younger, more athletic version of the run stuffing Lancaster and Heflin gives the Packers more potential as a run stuffing/pass rushing DE.

Between the greater upside of Heflin and the cap savings of cutting Lancaster, I think Heflin wins the roster spot.

I don't think Slaton is a DE, but rather an NT. Lots of potential at NT including being disruptive, but still an NT. Heflin is more of a DE. He is better at seeing the field and finding the ball and has enough athleticism and a motor to make some plays.

I always thought Lancaster was played out of position at DE and should be just an NT, which is why I made the comparison to Slaton. Heflin reminds me more of Lowery, but hopefully a better version.

I think Keke is the true DE. Slaton is a NT who is athletic enough to play DE. Heflin can spell them and Slaton can spell Clark. Given Z and Gary will put their hands down Lancaster would be a pure run-stuffer for running downs. I think that would help Clark release his offensive potential.

Clark, Slaton, Heflin, Keke, Lancaster. Don’t see the need for Lowry with Heflin emerging. Trade him ... oh wait, that 3 million dead money means we may go with a less synergistic DL room. That would be a mistake. Trade Lowry. You know it’s time when he’s described as having good camp by just being a jag.

It is not how much we saw during the games, it only matters what coaches see during the training camp under the closed and under the open doors. You are basing your judgement on some snaps in preseason game, but professionals see all those guys every day. Work ethic, intelligence (especially football intelligence), how player doing against strong (starters) opponents, etc.

So, flashes we saw with Heflin was not seen in Lancester's plays. That is also important component for making assessment about player. I'm glad that Packers have competition in house for many spots. Every spot more in competition, better team will be.

Thanks Al for your polluted thoughts

And my bleary eyed morning coffee follow ups are:

The Wave: no fans last year, not a lot of regular season fans in the stands, fans gets rusty too, they be ok, relax.

Heflin: he’s a keeper but most likely on the PS. Lancaster has given solid snaps on the cheap for several years.

Hill: this kid was a steal! You just never know, the best 7th round choice since Driver!

Slayton: this kid has a BIG personality along with a BIG body and the talent to match! He will have a Burger named after him eventually.

Sternberger: they should throw that flat pass to the Tight End in the toilet. It never works! Sternberger is disappointing but I don’t think they should give up on the kid just yet, he shows talent, just not consistently.

Braedon: I think he’s a guard and a “break glass in emergency “ tackle.
It’s good to give him the reps out there though.

Royce: Joe Dirt’s cousin Royce is going to be a good one! This young offensive live is really shaping up!

Yosh: BIG DUDE! I now understand why they have been developing him, what a physical specimen he is! I hope they can keep him around, they may need him.

Malik: as the #6, his awareness and confidence as a WR has grown! With the loss of Rambo & Redmond he just became even more valuable on Special Teams. He’s now a LOCK.

Ento: Ditto Ento on Special Teams, he will play a major role on team and yes his tackling may be an adventure. But the kid has shown excellent cover skills as a DB also.

ND: Sternberger has just shown very little in three years (and was dumb enough in his third year to get suspended for two games). I would keep Funchess as a move TE/WR and cut Sternberger. That also opens up the sixth WR slot for Taylor. Funchess and Taylor are a much better talent combo for the Packers than any combo including Sternberger.

As a WR, as LaFleur has noted, Funchess is a good blocker when used. He was not used s a blocking TE in college, pure move. There is a distinction. Sternberger has always been a poor blocker too, so that argument is a weak one. If I want to block hard I use Lewis or an H-Back not Sternberger or Funchess. If I want a receiving option who can chip, well that’s a pretty obvious choice.

The flat pass to the TE does work when Tonyan runs it, as he gets out there quicker, catches in stride and usually turns it upfield before a defender gets there.

Lancaster may be cheap, but Heflin is cheaper. Packers save $1M if they cut Lancaster. Every little bit of cap space helps with where they stand cap-wize.

AL, the flat pass to high man down his feet never ever works, especially if it is thrown little bit backwards. Not even for Big Bob. Jace almost had to lay down to be able to catch the ball. Those kind of throws are for check options to RB or small receivers in flat. That is why many teams use small receivers in flat, not high one...

This is my humble opinion...

All true , but most of the times a WR will be covered by a CB or S, however a TE will draw a LB. Also Packers usually run a miss direction on that play where TE delays and then runs a flat pattern. A hint to Dusty for future study.

The flat pass requires some:
a) some speed and burst plus the size to give momentum , which Tonyan has, or
b) great physical strength and burst to run over people (nearest is Dillon), or
c) plus agility and suddenness, not likely in a TE (think Jones/Adams), or
D) an ability to high hurdle like William Henderson.

I still don’t like it to anyone on a regular basis, but Tonyan can pull it off. Perhaps Deguara or Daffney will be (unseen as yet). Sternberger does not have any of the above. That’s why he’s not developed as a move TE. Since he’s a poor and inconsistent blocker, that in turn is why he isn’t seen much. It’s why he’s on his way out.

In retrospect, the writing has been on the walk since Tonyan showed himself to be not just more athletic but an adequate blocker and much more effective weapon. We picked Sternberger on his offensive upside, not his blocking. Tonyan is just better.

The Buffalo game will make the final determinations, but the O-line is starting to fall into place. I think Bahk starts on PUP and comes back around mid-season. I would love for it to be sooner, but the Packer medical staff is notoriously conservative and I see no reason for that to change with Bahk.

I think some combination of Jenkins, Patrick, Myers, Newman, Turner and Runyan are the starters plus one. Nijman, Braden and Van Lanen fill out the rest of the line. Van Lanen may go to the PS when Bahk returns. but he certainly appears to be a player that can be developed.

And yes, MarkinMadison, I will owe you a beer if Braden makes the 53.

Guam, mid-season seems a bit long for Bak. With all the improvements over the past 5-10 years made on recovery time for ACL's and other serious injuries I'd hoping they don't even have to put him onto the season PUP list. I know that's optimistic, but not entirely. It is common for players to come back 8-9 months in.

As an example, If my memory serves me right, A. Peterson came back 5-6 months after his ACL. He used a machine called ARP to speed up his recovery. I've used this machine for my Achilles, hammy and quad injuries in the past with amazing results. It's like rehab on Steriods.

Of course, my optimistic viewpoint is not taking into consideration Packers conservative approach, especially with someone they just signed a year ago to 10's of millions extension

I hope you are right Murf, but it just seems that big guys take longer to recover from ACL's than smaller guys. Peterson's recovery was done in a miracle timeframe and others have come back in 9-10 months, but they were almost always smaller guys.

I would not be shocked but that’s because I’m baffled by how to reconcile last year and this. I think VanLanen going to the PS and Kelly staying is more likely. Van Lanen has only taken back of the roster snaps. I just don’t see him on the roster or being poached off waivers. Kelly makes it unless there is something physical going on, purely on recent performance in the regular season.

Kelly's poor showing against the Texans and now hurt (knee) is a problem. That coupled with Nijman's improved play may make it easier for the Packers to move on from Kelly, save some cap dollars, and keep younger talent. It is either Kelly or Van Lanen for the ninth spot on the O-line and I think either one will be temporary given Bahk will return at some point and push them off the roster (I don't think the Pack keep 10 O-linemen). Why keep the more expensive guy for a few games if Nijman can play?

Older player in league, how much does he have left in his tank. Can he play starter minutes and hold up. Those are known as he has a track record and video. None of the replacements have played up to Turner's level yet, all the rookies have major issues with technique and need a year at least at both tackle positions. Yosh is still a project at best. He's made improvement, but it's against the Jets for goodness’s sake. (A team doing a complete tear down and rebuild, again) Lots of future talent on the O-line, but the Packers are in a win now mode. Tough calls across the board.

One thing not talked about is King vs Stokes as starter. I have to say after listening to King’s talk he seems like a man with a good head on his shoulders and a man who is a team player, willing to do what’s best for the team and helping the rookies learn the position.

I think King, when healthy is an above average CB and am happy they kept him. Smart move by the Packers. I’m also happy, they won’t be throwing Stokes into the wolves to start the season. He needs seasoning and would be inferior to King in his first year. If King gets injured, I’m also happy they will have Stokes waiting in the wings.

If King has regained his prior season speed and agility levels we win. If he hasn’t he will fade. If he has, the question. Of why the heck was he played so banged up re-emerges, if he hasn’t, the question of why we resigned him will.

I don’t think you get rid of guys like Lancaster to save $1 million dollars if you’re aiming at a Super Bowl. We have 20 hard games before we hoist the trophy and Heflin and Slaton haven’t even proven they can stay available in this league, and Lancaster has.

I think this will be Lancaster’s last season with the team, but he can help us to get where we want to be.

LH, so true, this isn't the time to try and save pennies. Unless they extend Arod and push SC dollars into the future, this team is heading toward a rebuild and saving a million this year isn't going to matter much. Lancaster gives us the best chance to make it all the way. I would say the same about Funchess.

What has Lancaster really shown beside being a plug NT? He gets driven out of his zone as a DE and provide zero pass rush. Heflin takes his job or Lowry's.

The Wave -
This shouldn't be hard. cheer after plays, be quit during. Be loud while on defense. Be smart fans! Be smart!

Hefty Hefty Heflin -
Heflin was a guy I was looking forward to seeing. He hasn't disappointed. I don't think he is a lock to make the roster, but I think one more good perfomance and he does make it. Tough decisions have to be made. If they were to let Lancaster go, I believe I heard that it would save $1 million? Every penny counts when they are in the hole next year.

Kylin Hill -
For draft value Hill maybe the best value in the draft. Hill was one of the players I was looking forward to seeing play the most after the draft. He has been really good! Not only will he be RB3. I think he has a real good chance of getting some playing time.

TJ Slaton -
Slaton is another rookie I was really looking forward to seeing. Lets be honest, I look forward to seeing all of them. But Slaton is one that can offer something they didn't have. A true beast in the middle. A guy that is tough to move out of the way. If he keeps learning the little things like keeping his head up, he will be even better then I hoped. I look forward to seeing him alongside of Clark and Keke.

Sternberger -
Is Sternberger a lock for the 53? After his suspension that is. I thought the light bulb was going to go off for him, I just don't know if it has or will.

Braden -
I think Braden is on the 53. He can play 3 spots. The question is who's spot does he take?

Royce keeps rolling -
I do believe we will be starting 2 rookies on the OL. Newman has some things to clean up, but he definitely is one of our best OG's.

Oh my Yosh, Nijman was better -
Huge turn around from one week to the next. The question now is, which week was the real Yosh? Week 1 or week 2?

Don't sleep on Malik -
The battle for the 6th spot has been made pretty clear. Winfree and EQ have missed both games, Funchess got hurt and has been out since. In the mean time. Taylor has emerged. He clearly is the the 6th WR. Question is, do they keep 7. I don't think so.

Can he develop Ento a good tackler?
Kabion is definitely a wild card. Does he make the 53? Its a good question. He has the ball skills, but has a lot to learn at CB. He does have a real chance though. This last game could earn him a spot on the 53.

Shields took a while to learn to tackle. It was never his strong point. Of course he had elite agility and speed, which Ento lacks. Ento does seem more instinctive than Shields was though. Shields became an adequate tackler. Ento is willing and has made some big tackles too. I don’t see why he can’t be taught some technique (that doesn’t require hitting so much to refine—willingness/comfort with contact does).

Al, first off great job as usual.

1.The time for the wave is long past, time to get the fans into the 21st Century. If they need to do the wave they can do it at halftime.

2. I agree that Heflin > Lancaster. If the Packers are going to move on from Lancaster they should try to trade him.

3. Hill and Slaton are going to be solid contributors for the Packers this season.

4. Chuck Sternberger keep Funchess. Funchess is a better receiver and will be more of a threat for opposing defenses to contend with.

5. Braden has yet to impress me but Royce and Nijman are looking like keepers.

6. Definitely retain Malik over Funchess if it comes down to that. He has more upside than Funchess given Funchess age and injury history.

7. Ento coach him up on tackling. Lock him a room and have him watch film of Herb Adderley until he gets it. Then put him on the practice field and have him execute. DC has stated that the defense will tackle better he needs to make sure that happens with every player.

Thanks, Since '61

M. Taylor has enough tape to ensure he does not make the PS if cut.

Funchess was a TE at MIchigan. At 6' 4" and 225 lbs he'd be a bit light as a TE but not much below Sternberger at 6' 4" and 250. Both run a 4.7+ but Funchess at least shows he wants to block and can power through initial contact for YAC. And on the strength scale Funchess looks chiseled...Sternberger still looks like he did as a rookie. Kind of skinny...does he even lift?

Keep Taylor, Funchess to the TE room, try to trade Sternberger...failing that, adios.

Saturday will tell the tale regarding Heflin vs Lancaster, even if Lancaster does not play. Lancaster has been a decent plugger yet now the D has two new run stoppers in Heflin and Slayton. I think Lancaster is on the bubble.

Funchess ran a lot faster than that at his pro day. In a foot race it is not close. Rewatch the Texans game If you doubt me. Funchess is faster, more agile, as one would expect from a 1000 yard NFL receiver. Funchess isn’t MVS but he’s fast for a man his size and has tape aplenty to show it.

I like what you wrote. But the packers will be just fine without the new faces. I still think TJ Slaton is the key to this DL. He frees up Clark to move around. Heflin/LanCaster = Keep them both. Funchess is a cut. I'll take Taylor first. I'm still keeping Sternberger. Regardless whom he may resemble. Hill- Nice footage. And finally the wall. Don't put two rookies together! I want Royce at RT. Because Turner won't be here next year. Theres just Not enough money to go around.

Great write up! I was at the game on Saturday. So embarrassing to sit in that crowd as they did the wave while the Packers offense was on the field. I told my wife and daughter at the time that the team would get after the crowd for that. Not sure if it's because it's the preseason or the fans are having a brain fart after missing a season in the stands.

I agree with everything except Taylor vs Funchess. Taylor has looked good, but I don't think he will ever be anything more than a 6th. I've watched Funchess since his days at Michigan and he has tons of talent. With Rodgers throwing him the ball he could have a monster season. Remember he hasn't played in two years. He will continue to get better as the season goes on. Unless his injury is severe, it would be a mistake to cut him over Taylor. We will find out soon!
