Confessions of a Polluted Mindset - My Lion Eyes

The Weekly Packers Brain Drain from Jersey Al.

If I told you anything else, you could see right through my lying eyes, so first off - some full disclosure: I paid verly little attention to this game (which is highly unusual for me, but it happened). I had the game on and was watching/listening with one eye/ear while I listened to the CHTV Watch Party with one headphone in the other ear. That in itself, is not unusual - it's actually my normal routine. But I was so ambivalent about watching the game, I couldn't pull myself away from a 750-clue crosswird puzzle I was deep into. Then work got crazy on Monday and Tuesday, not allowing me to goof off and re-watch the game (or do my ususal "3 things..." post). So I can't say I actually saw EVERY play, and hence, I'm not sure where my polluted mind is going to go as I start writing this. Regardless, let's get started.

10 letter word for "unconvential ones." First and fourth letter is an e.

The Plan - So, things didn't exactly meet coach LaFleur's  utopian expectations of how things would go on Sunday, as you can tell from the tone of his post-game interview. There were some good moments in this game, but plenty of worrisome ones. As much as we want to keep repeating, "it didn't matter," there were some things put on tape that have other coaches scratching their chins and saying, "Hmmm."

Trickeration - As a big fan of trick plays, this could have been my Super Bowl. Unfortunately, it was the Lions making the Packers look absolutely foolish, so I refuse to let myself enjoy it.

9 letter word for "putting out on an anniversary, maybe." First letter r, fourth letter s.

He's Bakh - I did make sure to pay attention to Bakhtiari when he was in there, and he looked just fine. If you don't believe me, check out this video Larry McCarren did:  https://www.packers.com/video/rock-report-what-rust

So did Jordan Love play? I haven't heard anything about him...

9 letter word for "comprehenice collections of related information."  First letter d, third letter t.

Sit down Royce - Well, as I think most here expected, with Josh Myers back at center, it wasn't Lucas Patrick that got sent to the bench. He just took a few steps over to the right and Royce Newman took the walk to the sideline. Patrick has to be one of the most valuable low-budget depth signings in recent Packers history.

FInding those missing puzzle pieces - Bakh and Myers are back. Z and Turner to practice this week, we're just waiting on Jaire. Oh, and let's not forget the most important of all, future Packers HOF'er David Moore, who is off the Covid list.

A mere 12 iinches to paydirt - Some things never change - even in meaningless games.

I mentioned in a previous post I was surprised when I saw Patrick at RG instead of Newman this past Sunday. Royce has struggled. especially in the run game, BUT I also think he's going to be the Packers next great OG along with JRJ. Gute has just found in consecutive drafts, in the 4th and 6th rounds, our next Lang and Sitton for years to come. I honestly think they can be that good.

Newman is REALLY athletic and Runyan Jr. is just a beast getting better and better. Newmans biggest issue is stunts...He seems to get beat on some kind of stunt in every game. He's getting better but IF Patrick isn't allowing those stunts to blow up the offense, in a win or go home senario, then I'm okay with this move. YES, I'm a homer but I think I'm right on this one!

I was SO happy to see both DB and Meyers out there AND Bakhtiari laughing on the sideline after coming out. What made me almost as happy was hearing Z was going to start practicing this week. IF the Packers can get 15 to 20 snaps from Z Smith a game, QUALITY snaps, this is going to be huge.

Z Smith, Kenny Clark, P Smith, and Rashan Gary, all on the field at the same time on 3rd and 10? Oh HELL YES!!

12 Quarters to go!!

The problem is that Myers wasn’t good at all either. Patrick can only play in one spot. I’m not sure which is the weakest link. Right now, it’s the best 5 currently that matter. Future potential is irrelevant till next season. I think that’s not as simple a question as suggested.

I'm really excited about the linemen who are under contract already to return to Green Bay next year.

Bakhtiari is getting paid a ton and if he can stay healthy and play a few more years, he's probably worth it. Myers looks like he can play center for us. Turner gets paid what starting RTs get paid in this league....about $9 million. Cutting him costs us more in dead money than it creates in cap space, so he'll be back. We have Patrick and Runyan and Newman at guards, and Myers at center. That's pretty good. Now when you factor in Nijman as a backup tackle, and of course Jenkins, who we can play and excel anywhere we want, that's a pretty good 9 man group right there.

To repeat, these guys are all under contract. We don't have to do anything. It's already in place for next year.

The Plan -
Yes there are some worrisome moments. Especially when a good portion of the starting defense gave up 37 points to the Lions. The Lions who only won 2 games up to this point. They didn't get much pressure and they weren't close to any interceptions. They had guys running wide open and they couldn't find a way to stop one Weapon. They allowed Detroit to score TD's on 4 of their 10 (meaningful) possessions. They allowed 3 FG's and only 2 punts. They had one set of turnover on downs. Which means they allowed Detroit to score on 7 of their 10 possessions.
On 2 of their 4 TD's, they were trick types of plays. That part is concerning since we know teams will game plan that for us. We better be prepared to defend it!

He's Bakh -
It was great seeing Bakhtiari back! I will admit though, Yosh did a fantastic job filling in for Jenkins who was filling in for Bakhtiari. Side note/thought. Had they known how well Yosh was going to play at LT, I don't think they would have moved Jenkins out there, which means he would likely still be playing LG, which means I believe Runyan would be our RG, which means Patrick wouldn't be playing right now because Myers is back also. But we are here and I have no worries about Yosh if he is having to play at anypoint.

But it was great seeing Bakhtiari out there! It was also great seeing Myers out there. I was surprised that the put Patrick at RG, but it makes sense. Our OL which was good and had played well could have just gotten a huge boost.

Love -
I had already mentioned my feelings about Love the last few days. My feelings are the same.

Finding those missing puzzle pieces-
It is incredible that we were able to lock down the NFC #1 seed while missing our Pro Bowl/All Pro players like Bakhtiari, Jenkins, Za'Darius, Jaire. Also we have been without Turner, Myers. Crazy that our OL for a stretch was Our 3rd string LT, 2nd string LG, 2nd string RG, 2nd string RT.
For the first time this year we will have most of our preferred starters on the OL. Jenkins is the only one that won't be back. We are getting Cobb back, which should give our offense a boost. Rodgers has missed that 1 extra piece. On defense, if Za'Darius can come back and play right away that gives us an extra pass rusher. I would assume they will likely use him on passing downs. That will give us a huge boost. Also getting Jaire back, that will add another dimension to our defense. I'm not sure how they will use him, but I wouldn't be surprised if he is in the star nickel role.

David Moore could give the return game a big boost. I do feel like Rodgers has improved, but Moore should be more trusted back there.

We get the bye week this week. Hopefully this gave time for the injured players some time to heal up a bit.

I'm ready for the playoffs to begin! LFG!

How can you not " Come up with 3 plays”. Maybe it’s because Jordan Love did play? Just let your Conscientious be your guide. We both know Love wouldn’t have been in there if Lombardi was coach. And if Rodgers can take the heat, after his many awards and accolades. Dish it out Al. It’s time todays players get the same message as the 60s. Winning is the only thing!!

If Lombardi was coach, if lombardi was coach.. such a lame game to play.

But if you're going to play it, if Lombardi was coach, Aaron Rodgers would have been out on his ass a LONG time ago. That's a fact.

Lombardi would not have suffered Rodgers' brand of being a 'complicated fella.'

To your point, during the Patriots' 19-1 season, I'm sure every Patriot fan would've gladly given up at least one regular-season win for the win they missed in the Super Bowl. If AR can lead the Packers to the Super Bowl, they'd better damn well win it.

Pretty much, yes.

Another way to look at it might be to look at those memes where it says "you need to live here for one month and you get a milliion dollars, could you do it?" I think most of us would pick the journey to a million that's on a beach over one that's in a septic tank...but as long as you get the million either is worth it. Well, there's no guaranteed million in the NFL, but one journey is a helluva lot better than the other, and if the journey to the million comes with a trip to the beach--at least you had the trip to the beach.

I think the playoffs line up about as well as can be hoped for:
--every other team on the slate is a warm weather/dome team (except Philly, and IMO TB will roll them hard)
--they can't play both Dallas and Tampa (they'll likely have to beat each other up first), and it's entirely possible Dallas takes an early out to an SF team that's playing good ball right now.
--Neither the Rams or Cards are all that impressive at the moment, and will have to beat each other up to get to Lambeau. I think we'll see the Rams come to town unless SF beats Dallas, of course.

The pins are lined up. Knock 'em down.

Dobber - we play much better at home than on the road. This season we have allowed only 16.75 points per game. Hopefully we will play at that level during our home playoff games.

On the flip side the 37 points we allowed against the Lions were most points the Lions scored all season. Once again our defense has the distinction of making a mediocre QB and offense look like an NFL powerhouse. Let’s hope the good defense shows up. Stay safe. Thanks, Since ‘61

So now mediocre is defined as a #2 overall pick who has been to the Super Bowl....a lot more recently than Rodgers. OK. I see his passer rating is right behind another mediocre QB, Josh Allen. Higher than future HOFer, Big Ben. Despite playing for the worst team in the league.

I agree. We have a strong enough roster that is now healthier than expected. Now it’s down to the coaches to get the game planning and strategy right and to the players to get it done. There is no team that we can excuse defeat by. Time to show if we have the ability to win when it matters.

It looked to me as if we just turned up and played. Scant evidence of game planning on either side of the ball. Perhaps I am jaundiced, but that seems unwise. I just didn’t get the impression that the D came to play. Yet we left players on that we could have rested (safeties) and, If one is going to play backups, then give them a chance to win in the same way as one tries to do for the starters. Surely that’s a better basis for evaluation? Just looked like many weren’t mentally in the game.

Similarly, in order to evaluate Love, it seems odd not to give him time with the starting skill players as those are the ones he’s apparently been practicing with. Perhaps that’s a misconception that a professional would deem mistaken, but it seems like things were stacked to make it as difficult as possible. Surely the ideal is to build confidence in part?

Maybe it’s all in my head, but it suggests inexperience to me on the part of LaFleur. For all the good things he’s done, he’s also been out thought at critical times. I hope Sunday wasn’t a warning that he’s still a tad naive.

It seems to me that this was nothing about momentum and a lot about pandering to senior player targets. Beyond that, little to nothing was accomplished except exposure to injury.

Why was Dillon pounding so late (love to watch it, but Taylor should have handled it)? Other than depth due to injuries, my biggest worry is whether LaFleur can avoid laying a planning and in game egg as he has in the last two championship games. I’m left feeling that this game tends to suggest he’s not as acute as he may need to be yet. Let’s hope that neither of the injuries carry over into our next game.

I am not concerned about Love at all after a whopping 6 quarters of his first foray into regular season football.

Facts are stubborn things. Here was Rodgers first foray:

"Once the regular season began, Rodgers saw very little action that year. He played against the New Orleans Saints in the fourth quarter of a 52–3 victory, and completed his first career pass to fullback Vonta Leach for 0 yards.[63] On December 19, 2005, Rodgers entered the game against the Baltimore Ravens at the end of the third quarter in a 48–3 loss.[63] He completed eight of 15 passes for 65 yards and an interception.[64]"

How in the world could TT waste a #1 pick on this guy?

It’s like everybody was born yesterday. I was critical of Favre, particularly in 2005 when he turned it over a staggering 36 times, and I really wanted Rodgers to succeed and replace him, but he just wasn’t very good yet in his second season. It wasn’t until the Dallas game his third season that he looked like he might be a QB (although he didn’t win the game when he had the chance. I know that’s what matters to some).

Do I think he can execute the offense and protect the ball? Three straight scoring drives suggest he can. Will he be better by the start of next season? Of course. He has hundreds of hours to improve, and coaches to help. With a strong team around him, there’s no reason to believe we won’t be a good team next season too.

It’s the final countdown (cue trumpet). We have a core group of guys that has won 13 games three years in a row and is headed to the third straight Championship game. It is a certainty that some won’t be on the team next year, so this is it for this group.

Rodgers, Adams, Lazard, MVS, Lewis, Tonyan, Turner, ZSmith, Lowry, Lancaster,………any or all of these guys could be gone next year. This is it.

We will have a good nucleus next year, too. Amos and Savage could have Alexander, Stokes, Douglas, and Sullivan in the secondary with them. Gary and PSmith, Clark, Keke, Slaton. Resign Campbell. Most of our offensive line, including Bakhtiari and Jenkins on the left side . Jones and Dillon. But I do really believe it’s the last chance with our current group, so I’m really hoping that this is the team I think it is.

While I was torqued when the Lions pulled those two trick plays on the Packers, I can certainly see the redeeming value. We will be better prepared because of those two plays and more prepared against some team in the playoffs catching us off guard.

I do remember the trick play Sean Payton called against the Colts in the Super Bowl game played in 2010 where he call for an on side kick to open the second half of the game which was successful. The Saints were trailing at the time in the game and ultimately won 31-17.

Tom Brown was late rotating to the right side of the defense as Willie Wood moved up to Stop Dan Reeves. It was a good call since it was the first play of the 4th quarter. In those days several teams ran the HB option. The Packers ran the option for years while Hornung was still with the team.

It was the only points allowed by the Packers defense it the game. Thanks, Since ‘61

Interesting thoughts you share with us. Unfortunatelly I do not know enough English to be able to help you with your 750-clue crossword puzzle.

I suppose it is good that you did not hear much about Jordan Love, at this moment of his career, still I would like to get your opinion on that deep pass to ESB. Was that bad pass or was it bad play from ESB. I checked several times on Game pass and to me it looks like perfect pass that ESB did not track him at all or very poorly, and was juked by Lions defender, he substantialy slowed down and jump in try to catch the pass in front of the defender. Some people here tells that it was bad pass. I would like to know your opinion, not as judge, but just as person whom I trust will be more qualified to estimate situation.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. And, yes, "obvious passing situation", LOL

I agree--I think the receiver blew it. Despite what the announcer said about putting it in the "alley."

Not running Dillon on the verge of the endzone to score our first touchdown -- instead, two pass plays that seemed designed for Davante -- appeared to demonstrate that Rodgers and Adams playing against the Lions was all about Rodgers and Adams, not the good of the team.
One of the announcers on NBC, if I remember correctly, said Rodgers was "adamant" on playing in that game. That doesn't sound like a player who quietly consulted his head coach about whether it was in the best interest of the team for him to play -- especially on his severely injured toe that has been such a big deal of late.
***
It seems the toe has not been talked about of late as either wonderfully healed or still problematic from week to week, and in danger of needing surgery if tweaked with further damage.
Nor, as far as I know, has Rodgers or LaFleur explained the apparent contradiction as to why playing in the meaningless game against the Lions was so important but playing in the preseason is so unimportant.
Thus, my confidence in the Packers having the character to win the Super Bowl is considerably diminished.
Also, I've been hoping this season for Rodgers to change in the sense of becoming more team-oriented and coachable, This seems not to have happened to a significant degree, in which case I'm eager to move on from Rodgers.
Again, I could be way wrong, and would be glad to be way wrong.
***
As a stupid fan who doesn't know what's going on inside the team, I can only make my best guesses. Perhaps Rodgers could deign to answer questions such as mine, but maybe his attitude is why bother.
I'm saddened, if not sickened, by the apparent prima donna mentality of Rodgers, and the apparent weakness of LaFleur.
At least with Jordan Love in the game, I saw some real team football with lots of different players getting touches and making key contributions. It was a bit ragged at times, as would be expected with new guys on the field together, but those things can be smoothed out.
At least the second half had integrity in terms of the Packers as a team.
Yes, I loyally and passionately rooted for the Packers in the mostly dreary '70s and '80s -- and having been born in 1962, was too young to enjoy them in the Lombardi Era.
I'll take a lesser team with integrity over a more talented team with arrogance. Besides, the teams of Aaron Rodgers have had an unfortunate habit of falling just short in ways that leave fans with nagging pains that things could have been better.
Perhaps it was a humbler and more coachable Rodgers that led us to a Super Bowl those many years ago.
I don't know -- but unless we ask the hard questions in advance, and at least call for high standards from our Packers, don't be surprised if we get hurt again in the future.
The way to a championship is narrow, and it takes more than gaudy statistics and individual accolades to stay on course.

What does weary at me at times are your snarky replies, 13TimeChamps, and those of a few others -- especially when it's so easy to scroll on by.
Actually, I had written very little about the melodrama of Aaron Rodgers of late, even though there were discussions here at CHTV initiated by the staff. I did figure it was pretty much old news, and that I'd wait to see what happened through the playoffs regarding our enigmatic quarterback.
However, the issues with the Lions game noted above really bothered me since right after the Vikings game when Rodgers seemed to assert his intention to play against the Lions without apparently talking it over in private with his coach. Even announcer Cris Collinsworth had seemed to take it for granted near the end of the Vikings game that Rodgers would sit out against the Lions, which gave validation to my concern.
What then happened in the first half against the Lions seemed to confirm my suspicions of selfishness on the part of Rodgers (and maybe Davante) -- as the two seemed to use that opportunity on the field mostly to play catch with each other to pad their stats.
So, yes, I have made perhaps several comments along the same lines. Yet after none of those comments do I remember lots of satisfactory answers to allay my fears that our team is going to sink under the weight of selfishness and arrogance led by Aaron Rodgers.
I may have received a couple or more good responses, but not many, and none of them all that convincing, at least to myself.
Mostly, it seems fans think that since Rodgers is really talented and the team is winning, it doesn't matter much if he acts like a jerk -- although that ignores the perennial disappointments of the Packers under Rodgers for more than a decade.
***
I remember one NFC Championship Game in 2014 against the Seahawks, for example, when our defense played really well for most of the game, but our offense for the most part could only manage field goals -- which left us vulnerable to what turned out to be a crushing loss.
At the time, I consoled myself with the thought that we had after all gotten oh so far and oh so close, and maybe did our best. In recent seasons, though, I've started wondering if there's a stubborn sense of superiority in our superstar quarterback that has been holding the team back from reaching the fullness of its potential.
Anyway, I think that the fans here at CHTV are generally intelligent, and I guess I'm disappointed when I don't receive all that many responses that are intelligent (for or against) -- and most of those that I do receive are just shallow insults.
P.S. I greatly appreciate the "thumbs up" from some fans -- including any from those who may not be inclined to make comments. They help to sustain me when I get discouraged by a barrage of "thumbs down."

My view of ARod (and it’s not a secret I am a ARod apologist), who cares if ARod is a prima donna? I don’t care if he’s married to a Hollywood star, and I don’t care if he doesn’t get along with his family, and I wouldn’t care if he wears a mohair suit.
Does he help the Packers—that’s the question!

"Does he help the Packers -- that's the question!"
Yes, he does very much help the Packers; yet there is a nagging question about a lack of championships in his superb career.
How many excuses does Rodgers get for not winning the Super Bowl since 2010?
***
As for LaFleur being weak, it seems he allowed Rodgers to bully him into not playing the starters in the preseason; then, in an apparent contradiction, it seems he allowed Rodgers to bully him into playing the starters against the Lions.
After all, it was the venerable Rodgers himself who has assured us in his smug way that he doesn't need games for the offense to be sharp. He only needs practices.
We've also been told that this most promising season of the Packers hangs by the injured pinky toe of our quarterback not getting further damaged.
***
Even Packer Aaron wondered why the starters played against the Lions, especially Rodgers. I'd be glad for Mr. Nagler to elaborate on that, and for that matter also Jersey Al and others of the fine staff at CHTV to weigh in forthrightly.
***
If the ugly opener against the Saints changed the way Rodgers thinks about starters playing in the preseason games (as well as this past trivial game against the Lions), it would be nice if he conveyed that to the fans.
Perhaps he considers us too ignorant to explain his apparent contradictions -- that there's no way we can understand the complexity of his situations in the NFL -- but he could at least try to clue us in a little to palliate us.
***
Anyway, Starrbrite, I appreciate your robust but respectful answer. My answer to you is meant in the same spirit. All the best to you as fellow fans.
As I've said, I may be way wrong about this or that when it comes to the Packers.
So far, though, I'm not hearing compelling reasons to be comfortable with Rodgers having developed the character to lead us to the top.
***
Bart Starr won because of character along with talent.
Johnny Unitas and the Colts had lots of talent to match up with the Packers. The Browns, Lions, Bears, Rams, and Cowboys all put forth formidable teams during the Lombardi Era.
Lombardi certainly brought out the best in Starr; but I think, in the long run, Starr did almost as much to bring out the best in Lombardi.
Winning 5 championships in 7 years -- and 3 in a row for the first and only time ever in the storied history of the NFL -- doesn't happen lightly.
However much the game of football may change, one of the constants is character as a winning edge.

By the way, the Packers have won 3 NFL titles in a row twice, not once. Learn your Packer history before trying to lecture the rest of us who don't subscribe to your wacky conspiracy theories.

The Packers have won 13 games 3 years in a row with MLF as coach and AR12 as QB. There is ZERO evidence they don't respect each other or get along, regardless of what some talking head on TV is telling you. Stop inventing drama that doesn't exist and try actually enjoying the games.

You're somewhat correct, but the championships of 1929-31 were before the NFL had playoffs, so there were no championship games to decide the matter of which team was best in any given season. It was different.
Since the first championship game of 1933, no team has won 3 in a row, or 5 out of 7. Not Otto Graham, not Joe Montana, not Tom Brady.
This is the main reason Bart Starr is the greatest quarterback of all time, in my opinion.
Instead of Packers fans trying to find excuses for why Starr isn't as great as some who came afterward, maybe they could consider whether these quarterbacks would have been as good if they played in Starr's time.

Swisch, your reasoning as to why the Packers won 5 championships in 7 years is flawed. Lombardi's Packers won as a team, a great team. By repeatedly claiming that Starr is the reason they won those championships you diminish the play of Hornung, Taylor, Kramer, Gregg, Ringo, Davis, Nitschke, Adderly, Robinson, Wood, and Jordan. All NFL HOFers.

Starr was a great QB but he did play with 11 other HOFers during his career. He also played behind what was probably the greatest OL of all time. Lombard's defense was the underpinning for all of those championships. They only allowed 9.7 PPG in 10 post season games. Are you aware the Nitschke was named the MVP of the 1962 NFL Championship gamer against the Giants which the Packers won 16-7. The second consecutive shutout by the Packers defense in a championship game. The Giants only points came on a blocked punt recovered in the end zone by the Giants.

So to answer your question if QBs who played after Starr could have won as often the answer is yes. Because Montana, Marino, Brady, Elway, Favre, Rodgers and numerous others could win with a defense that only allowed 9.7 points in playoff games.

It's not a knock on Starr to say that other great QBs would have won as often with the Lombardi Packers. Lombardi himself stated when he watched Sonny Jurgenson practice after he joined the Redskins that "if we had Jurgenson in Green Bay we would have never lost a game."

You have allowed the myth originated by ESPN in the 80s and since perpetuated by everyone else in the media that the QB is the reason for winning and losing in the NFL to influence your perspective about the NFL.

Granted good QB play is critical to winning and losing in the NFL. But even a great QB cannot and should not be expected to overcome porous defensive play which allows 30 or 35 PPG per game or worse. A great QB cannot overcome a weak OL which allows defenders to come at him unblocked or which fails to provide RBs with openings to run through. A QB can throw a perfect pass on every throw but it doesn't matter if the receivers drop all of the throws. As we all know even the greatest of QBs cannot overcome mediocre ST play.

Your admiration for Starr is based upon his character, which was impeccable on and off the field but he was the product of a different era and a different set of circumstances that for the most part no longer exists in our current society. Also, he was a 17th round draft pick whose career was going nowhere until Lombardi arrived in Green Bay and who Lombardi tried to trade for Don Meredith and Sonny Jurgenson.

Starr was smart, worked hard, developed good leadership and rarely hurt the team with his decision making. But he did not possess the talent that succeeded him at the QB position in the following decades. Montana, Marino, Elway, Manning, Favre, Rodgers and many others Brought more talent to the position than Starr did. Even in his own era Unitas, Meredith and Jurgenson brought more pure throwing ability than Starr. It's not a knock on Starr it's just the truth and it's a fact in sports that someone better always comes along.

What Rodgers says or does off the field may diminish him as a person but it does not and should not diminish what he does on the field or what he means to the Packers. Since the loss to New Orleans he has thrown only 2 picks versus 37 TD passes in 15 and 1/2 games. Even Starr never accomplished that. Rodgers plays the position brilliantly but he is not the only reason for the Packers success. His OL has been very good. He finally has a very good running game and his defense is finally making stops in key situations.

You complained about Rodgers missing OTAs and the team went 13-3. You complained about Rodgers press conference when he arrived in TC and the team has the #1 seed in the conference. You complained about him undermining his coach and he is probably going to win his 2nd consecutive and 4th MVP award? You theorize that all of this will undermine the team? Where in this season's results do you see evidence of any of this? Your speculations diminish the results of our coaching staff and other team members. Do you think that MLF would allow himself to be manipulated by any of his players? If that is the case then he should not be an NFL HC. And beyond that Gute should not be a GM. Do you think that all of Rodgers teammates are too weak to stand up to him if they believed that he was hurting the team? Have you seen or heard any evidence that the Packers have a split locker room over Rodgers?

Watch and appreciate what happens on the field. Ultimately that is where the answers are for your speculations.
I watched Starr and the Lombardi Packers. That is why I appreciate what Rodgers has done during his career on the field. The Lombardi era Packers are my benchmark. Rodgers has exceeded those expectations on the field. For much of his career other units of the team have not, such as STs and playoff defense.

Finally, remember this. If Starr played today he would be a different person than he was in the Lombardi era. He would have to be because the environmental influences he would have grown up would be totally different than they were when he grew up. His father may not have been in the military, which was a huge influence on Bart.
He may not have attended Alabama. And he most likely would have been an UDFA if he was able to make it to the NFL at all.

It isn't fair to judge the young people of today by their counterparts of the past. Today's young people must make their own way just as we did when we grew up. To expect anything less of them is to deny them their individuality and their respective life paths. Rodgers has found success in the same profession as Starr but that does not mean, as least for me, that we should expect him to be the same person off the field. That is not fair to him or to Starr.

Sorry to other bloggers for the long post. But Swisch I have done this in the hope that you now have at least a partial answer from one who has observed the careers of Starr and Rodgers. I also hope that this might enable you to move on from this topic. In any case my response has been intended to be respectful and helpful to you. Stay safe. Thanks, Since '61

" I also hope that this might enable you to move on from this topic."

That statement alone is worth 20 thumbs up, but I'm sure it will fall on deaf ears.

I'm expecting multiple posts during these playoffs that will be centered around:

Rodgers is undermining the coach. (Even no evidence of that actually exists)
Rodgers cares more about himself than the team. (Even though his teammates seem to love playing with him)
Rodger's character flaws will keep us from getting to/winning a Super Bowl.
A really weird obsession with Rodger's toe.
He's no Bart Starr.

And then, of course, "But I really like him and I hope I'm wrong."

Swisch, you may not have watched the same first half I did last week. I'm pretty sure Lazard was the leading receiver in yardage at half-time. All games, but especially playoff games turn on critical moments, where a play is either made or not (think dropped interceptions in the NFCCG). It's the nature of the beast. Regarding the 2014 game, special teams killed that game...fake punt, on-side kick responsibilities, and Rodgers was still basically playing on one leg (calf). To think the Packers got there, and are currently here by trying to run up personal stats is absurd.

Lazard was an afterthought made necessary only when Davante was covered up by the Lions, or so it seems to me.

It's hard to balance personal and team goals.
Consider Walter Payton when he didn't get a touchdown in his only Super Bowl and was exceedingly distraught.
That it was so obvious the Patriots focused on Payton, which opened up opportunities for his teammates, was actually a supreme compliment that he apparently couldn't appreciate at the time.
Growing up in and around Chicago, I am perhaps the only person who has rooted for both the Packers and the Bears -- although always the Packers first, at considerable teasing from Bears fans around me.
I still admire Payton. I don't agree with his meltdown after the Super Bowl but understand it as a frailty of human nature, and like to think he got over it fairly quickly.
Even in my 60th year, I'm still prone to meltdowns; it's disconcerting to me how immature I can be even so far along in life. I'm working on it, though.
I also try to be understanding of Aaron Rodgers. If I was in his position as a superstar quarterback, I may get carried away with myself, too (perhaps in different ways).
I actually like Rodgers and am still rooting for him to get it together (if indeed I'm right in thinking he needs to get it together). I'm continually hoping and praying for signs of humility and coachability in him to go along with his current attributes.
I care about Rodgers as a person as well as a player, and that involves a measure of honesty in my opinions of him (acknowledging I may be wrong, and trying not to overdo the criticism). The guy doesn't need sycophants fawning at his every pronouncement.
In conclusion, I do believe Rodgers cares a lot about winning -- but how much of himself is he willing to sacrifice for the others with the Packers?

Swisch—as I mentioned, I often agree with you and always like your comments.
You again make some very strong arguments, although I don’t necessarily agree with all of them. You make some astute comments about Starr and Unitas.
I don’t agree that ARod bullied MLF to play. I believe ARod made a vaild statement when he said that he did not like the idea of not playing for 3-weeks; which I completely agreed with. I wanted the starters to play.
Is ARod a prima donna—yes! But he’s not Antonio Brown. It’s the opposite, his fellow teammates seem to rally around him.
Respectfully disagree on a few things—but not often Swisch.

There's an intriguing story I heard Don Shula himself tell about Johnnie Unitas when he became the new head coach of the Colts.
As best I can remember, it was near the end of a close game. Shula called a play on the field, but Unitas purposely disobeyed him and did something different.
Unitas won the game in spectacular fashion on that play.
Unitas then said to Shula something like. "That's how we do things around here."
***
I think Shula smiled and chuckled in telling that story.
It makes me wonder, though, if that's why Unitas didn't win any championships in the entire decade of the 1960s after he led the Colts to two consecutive championships to close out the 1950s. (Unitas also won one in 1970, but I'm not so sure how much of it was due to him at that late point in his career.)
I'd be glad for other fans to clarify any mistakes I may have made in this account. I think the story comes from the biography of Shula done by the NFL Channel.
***
Meanwhile, if any quarterback tried to influence Lombardi in his decisions by going to the media before talking to him first, I like to think Lombardi would have kicked him in the ass and out the door.
When Starr recommended the quarterback sneak on the icy tundra to win the Ice Bowl, Lombardi said something like, "Run it, and let's get the hell out of here."
That profound moment was the culmination of a great relationship between head coach and quarterback. Lombardi knew that Starr would never intrude on Lombardi's authority as coach of the entire team. Starr would never manipulate Lombardi. Starr would never put Lombardi in an awkward position.
Lombardi could trust Starr completely; so that when Starr made a suggestion in the most suspenseful moment of Packers history, Lombardi was willing to listen and go with it.
That's how a quarterback gains more of a voice with a head coach. Not by what appears to be the Rodgers way, but by the Starr way.
Also, that's how a team in the most brutal of weather conditions and the most desperate of situations pulls off a 68-yard-drive and culminates it with the winning play in the last seconds by a margin of just inches.
Character wins championships.
P.S. I miss Bart Starr, even though I was too young to see him play.

Did you know Aaron Rodgers actually asked Bahktiari to play in this so called meaningless game? Bahk said he didn't plan on playing in the game until Aaron asked him to. I assume some think that was selfish of Rodgers too?

My opinion is Rodgers had at least 3 reasons for playing in the game.

The first was to avoid a complete 2 weeks off going into the playoffs.

The 2nd reason was to make sure Davante broke the Packers record for receiving yards with them on the field together.

The 3rd reason was to help build the confidence of his All Pro LT after a full year off. To ask him to play in a so called meaningless game he wasn't planning to play in, speaks volumes. That was Rodgers saying, I have all the confidence in the world in you, now go prove it to yourself that you are ready to return.

Now D Bahk has those snaps in live action under his belt and can get in some good days of practice to build off of that and try to get back into some semblance of game shape.

I could be wrong but that doesn't sound like someone that's being selfish or not a team player. No one can really doubt Rodgers love for his teammates, that was genuine love and respect on display this last weekend, IMHO.

So Bakh wasn’t going to play and LaFleur wasn’t asking him to, or Bakh was resisting? It’s a nice story on the surface, and may in fact be just that, but if it is true, it would suggest that there is a great deal more wrong than I thought with the way things are operating off field.

The story I heard was that Rodgers wanted to play since Bakh was to get time with him on his blindside. That is what Rodgers had said. In my view that was laudable at least for a drive or so, but shouldn’t have lasted till the starters were pulled on O.
