Just get it done. Yes, it is a crazy amount of money, to ALL of us, but what is the alternative? Lose him and start over? $50 million per year is the going money for a good starting QB. And that is what Love looks to be. It's never a perfect world with resigning players, but the alternative, drafting another QB, isn't guaranteed either. We could draft an Aaron Rodgers or another Zach Wilson. Luck doesn't last forever. I would get it done before it goes up more and we risk losing him.

Yep—as Colin Cowerd said, Love demonstrated the most substantial improvement by a young QB, in the shortest span of time, he’d ever witnessed—I agree.
You have to pay your stars—especially at QB.

Yeah, using the franchise tag on your franchise QB who you already didn't take the 5th year option on... what could go wrong?
You can't really be this poor at understanding how not only contracts work, but also how people react to situations, can you?

Tell me about how Ted Thompson used the Franchise tag to keep players instead of giving them contracts.
The only case I can think of was Ryan Pickett, and the context was that both sides already knew they were going to ink a long term deal, they just needed more time to get the contract hammered out, so the Packers franchised Pickett (with Pickett's advanced notice and consent) to cover any potential gap between his impending free agency and the deal being finalized. If I recall correctly, the deal for Pickett's long term extension was inked within less than a month of his being Franchised.
EDIT: Looked it up. Packers placed the franchise tag on Pickett on February 23rd, 2010. He was signed to a 4 year contract extension, effectively eliminating the terms of his franchise tag, on March 10th, 2010. He was franchised for less than 3 weeks.
Ted Thompson was vocally against using the Franchise tag in the manner you're suggesting, because he knew it wasn't prudent to basically hold a player hostage with a one year deal they had no part in agreeing to.

Deal for Jordan has to be done this offseason.
Waiting does not help.
Certainly there is a risk to such big contracts (injuries foremost), but without taking some risks you can't win the SB ever.
Before the video I would have estimated 4y/210m.
Now I would expect more like 5y/265m.
My naive hope is, Jordan will leave money on the table, to help building a competitive team and increase his chance, to win a ring or two.
Aaron needed until 39 to understand, what makes legacy,
"He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named", in my oinion less talented, understood that much earlier in his career and ended up with 7 rings.

The only thing the two sides will have to argue/negotiate is how much of it is guaranteed. Hopefully GB comes out on the winning side of that. If he balls out, they can always restructure and fill his pockets then.

This for Stockholder and any others who think the better plan regarding Loves next contract. What could go wrong if GB waits until after the season, and see how he does, before negotiating a contract or franchise tagging him?
We piss him off and we have to franchise tag him anyway. Maybe he then holds out until we trade him. WE LOSE.
We wait and instead of $50 million per year, it becomes $60 million. WE LOSE
Negotiate now while there is an even playing field.
He likes playing here now and his teammates like him too.
I would say pay close attention to what it costs teams to trade up for the opportunity to draft a top QB with a 50% chance they will be good enough to start for an NFL team. That's "Start" not "Star."

I would wait for at least half a season or so to pull the trigger. Will be good to see how other coaches go up against him with D before throwing ton of money his way. Easier to judge after a half season or so. He may have been a flash in the pan or a real legitimate QB worth a huge salary! Just my rationalization on the subject.

5 new years means that with the year remaining on his current deal Love would be under contract through the 2029 season. That seemed like a long time to me given the increasing cap and QB salaries. So, I checked and Burrow and Herbert are under contract through 2029 (though Herbert has a $71 million cap number in 2028 that might be designed to force a renegotiation, but it is followed by a $59M cap number, so it might not work that way if the cap gets high enough).
I also wonder if an offset provision is possible. I doubt it as it might be deemed insulting.
