Thompson\'s Arrogance

Agree with Andy on this item is from Peter King's Monday Morning Quarterback, and I didn't want to escape the week without commenting on it. It's in regards to what King wrote about the Packers giving the coaches the opening weekend of free agency off, and more importantly, why:

Weirdest thing I heard over the weekend: Pack gave their coaches the weekend off. They'll be in today, and this week, to work on the free agents. I'm told that has meaning -- that the Packers want to send the message that free agency spending these days is profligate, and they'll get in when the Dan Snyders get out.

It's the bolded part that riles me up. Ohhhh...does it have meaning? Teddy, you're really sticking it to the league by letting Philbin and the boys take the weekend. I'm sure Snyder is pondering it as we speak.

Fucking. Ridiculous.

Look, I'm all for Thompson not jumping into the fray on the opening weekend of free agency, for all the myriad reasons he and others have given. But to give your coaching staff the first three days of the league year off, just to prove some stupid point is, well, stupid. And it plays into the perception that Thompson is arrogant, a charge first leveled at him, to the best of my recollection, with the drafting of Nick Collins in the 2nd round in 2005, a player that even most pro scouts had going on the second day of the draft, if at all. After that draft, the whispers started that Thompson felt as though he could do no wrong, especially when it came to player evaluation. At the time I dismissed it. Thompson's reluctant nature with the press and awkward style no doubt fed the perception, but the sense I got was that he was simply uncomfortable in the public spotlight, but very confident in his abilities. Nothing wrong with that. Then came the Favre fiasco where, to put it charitably, the facade around Thompson's rumored arrogance was, if not prized away, at least chipped and cracked a bit. I'm on record as putting most of the blame on Favre for that episode, but Thompson's unwillingness to communicate was a real eye opener.

And now this. It just reeks of the worst kind of "I know better than everyone else" kind of thinking, which is fine. Perhaps he DOES know better than the rest of the league and the Packers are about to go on a Patriot-like run of prosperity over the course of the next several years. But to flaunt your supposed superiority for all to see, when your current resume consists of one winning season, one playoff appearance, and an overall losing record, well, that is the height of arrogance.

Which is why no one wants to deal with the situation up here. There were enough reasons not to come to GB before Ted, now to add a couple more, good luck.

Well written. Couldn't agree more. If nothing else, Thompson has shown himself to be entirely one-dimensional. He's a glorified director of college scouting. Nothing more.

"F!@#ing Ridiculous!" Thank you Aaron. Let me add this little tidbit from Gary Woefel to the mix:

http://www.journaltimes.com/articles/2009/03/04/local_sports/doc49ac9c6d...

I particularly enjoyed this about the position the Packers are considering for the upcoming draft.

"You got to be kidding

One of the first individuals I chatted with at the recent NFL Combine in Indianapolis was Nate Davis, a talented quarterback from Ball State who could be a first-round selection.

I asked Davis which teams he had spoken with and he immediately rattled off several of them. I then facetiously asked Davis if the Packers had shown any interest in him.

The Packers, of course, need another quarterback like Octomom needs another baby. The Packers already have Aaron Rodgers, Matt Flynn and Brian Brohm, who they drafted last year.

“Yes, they have,” Davis responded. “I have an interview scheduled with the Packers tomorrow.”

And, no, he wasn’t being facetious."

I am an unabashed critic of TT. Although when he gets ikt right I am willing to eat my share of crow, Favre, Cole, Collins 2nd Round, and hand on I'm still thinking.

Also, Woefel is predicting Oher (OT) as #1 for the Packers this year. Oh as a post script we find out Bus Cook is his agent.

When I read the story about giving the coaching staff the weekend off, then hearing Leonhard signed with the Jets made me realize Ted needs to be fired but its too late for that already. Do we want to become the Lions if we do that?

"Well, Peter's right about the message as far as free agency goes. That is definitely what it means. But as for the Packers' coaches having the weekend off -- which Reggie McKenzie told Blank was one of the reasons the Packers weren't in a hurry to bring Canty in for a visit -- that's not exactly the whole story. There were plenty of coaches around, if the Packers' deemed it necessary for them to come in. It's been routine for the Packers to give their coaches off following their work at the combine for some time. With March 16 the start date for off-season practices, this is really the last chance for coaches to tie up any loose ends at home with their families. That's especially true this year with the new defensive coaching staff. This was the last chance for those guys to get things settled back home. But, like I said, most of the coaches were around this weekend."

Leave it to Peter King to not get the WHOLE story, his source was an agent. Come on.

The most interesting thing I got out of the King article was confirmation of DDD's assertion- that Canty was using the Packers to try to squeeze more $ out of the Giants. Hell, he actually said that was his plan: ". . . Chris Canty said: 'I'm feeling better about this. Hey Brad, you think you can leverage one offer against the other?'" King is close to a lot of sources, but he also allows himself to be played by those sources for their own purposes. I guess that's why they let him get close in the first place.

I'm not too worked up about the free agent situation right now. There were 3 or 4 players out there who would have made nice additions to the defense, but I don't think any one of them was going to suddenly change things around. And I don't blame the Packers for wanting to meet with Canty before they made him an offer. The first week of free agency is simply show business and PR. That's not Thompson's game, and I'm ok with that.

What I can't get over: "that the Packers want to send the message"
It's not like the whole organization went on a hunger strike or something. It's just how the Packers do business.

We're splitting hairs here, but I disagree. Yes, it is how they do business - but there's a REASON they do business this particular way. To 'send a message'.
Which is asinine.

I understand where you're coming from Aaron, but can't really say I am upset as you are. For one thing, as mentioned above, Peter King gets played more than anyone by players, agents, and GMs. His disdain for TT stems from the way the Favre thing went down (King and #4 are bff). He's not going to do anything to help the Pack front office regardless. As for Canty, my guess is that he could have cared less which coaches were in the building. The Packers weren't willing to go over the top and make an offer he couldn't refuse and I think THAT is the message most players and agents take away from the TT regime. "Don't look for GB to break the bank on you." Gotta think the Giants laughed at Canty's agent when he brought up the idea of a better offer coming from Northeast Wisconsin.

Aaron come on dude... Peter King is Brett Favre's literary thug. Take anything he says about Ted Thompson with a grain of salt.

If the only thing we miss out on in the first week is the opportunity to pay Christ Canty 18 million guarenteed... then the vacation was worth it.

I have a tough time getting worked up over King's ascertation about the packers doing something to send some sort of message...what does he think we are a cheesy version of Al Queda?

The last person in the world that would be trying to send any message to anyone that would draw any attention to himself or the organiation is Ted Thompson, this is just silly shit stirring.

Lets touch on a few other things metioned here as well; first off Nick Collins was going to be drafted in the same round by Baltimore, that's why they called us after our pick to tell us we got us a good one. I think Baltimore knows something about safeties, and so apparently does Ted. I have no complaints about any of our safeties, just the coaching staff that constantly told the opposition that we are going to do what we are going to do all the time every game so go ahead and try and beat us (which they did).

No news is bad news to people who need a jolt in Wisconsin, but not to the people who work for the Packers, so get over it! Get a life....The Packers have some of the best facilities and staff in the league, people will come here if we pay them to. I am not sure who has said they wouldn't, could you enlighten me?

Canty wanted a $ figure commitment before the Packers could meet him and decide if they wanted him in their locker room. What the heck is wrong with wanting to sleep with the girl before you marry her? Crazy not to.

IF I were a sneak and wanted BJ Rajii and did not want Denver to trade up for him I would try my best to get everyone to think we were going Oline as well. And last time I checked we don't need a safety, much less a 5'8" safety no matter how white bread home grown he is.

Chill guys, we are all gonna get through this.

Who exactly are they sending a message to?

My point is that they are not "sending a message" to anyone, how people interpret their actions is different than them actively trying to send a message.

Aaron, I don't think you should let this get under your skin. Who knows if this is even a legit issue. If I had heard TT or Reggie McKenzie make a comment in a press conference I might think that they should get off their high horse and get to work.
But as it is now, you have some "journalist" referencing an unidentified source (by the way, do any sources give their names anymore) about how they feel the organization looks at free agency and is making a stand.
Sounds like 3rd hand opinions to me. "I heard from a guy, who heard from a guy, who heard from a guy that TT thinks he should get 53 picks in every draft so that he can have a new team every year." Uh oh, better watch out or Peter King is going to quote me as an unidentified source and write a new article. Just the kind of stuff true journalistic integrity is made of nowadays.
It's not worth getting worked up over.

We did not want Holliday went he went to the Chiefs (and sucked) why would we want him 6 years later? I would rather have fricken' Cole whom I don't think much of either....

I actually want Tank Johnson (Wisconsin is a good place for guys that like to collect guns) and I would take Igor too, but not yet, his price will drop in the next ten days.

We don't need a safety, we have 4 or 5, 2 or 3 of which will work just fine. Rouse is going to be strong safety behind Bigby who will be good (we will all be pissed at his price next year) and Collins will play centerfield with a 4th or 5th round draft choice behind him.

Blackmon, williams, woodson and Harris will be fine at corner. We need time, coaching up, and a few big bodies with a couple guys at LB who can prove they can rush the passer. Trust me, if they can't it will be because they can't not because they won't have good coaching.

We are gonna be fine, just fine.

ron - it may be 'more' relevant there, but i think this is an example of thompson's arrogance. i've not been one to follow the crazies into firetedland, but this one upsets me, and i think it has to do with tt's belief that he knows better than the rest of the world. i still hope he does, because i'd rather have a superbowl team than be right, but i think this is a glaring mistake made in the name of 'the plan.'

The mob has plans, the cops have plans, Thompson's got plans. You know, they're schemers.

Aaron, I don't know if it is arrogance or stubborness (sp?), but Thompson is something else. While I was a lot more forgiving of Favre than you were, I did acknowledge that he was a bit out of line. However, I always felt that Thompson, as the head of the franchise, did a horrendous job of crisis management.

I disagree with Bedard on that teenie little point, I posted his blurb because it shed a little more light on the PK statement that sent everyone into a tizzy.
It may indeed send a message, but I'm simply saying it is product of people's interpretation of their business practices, not some grand scheme by the Packers.
Maybe I'm muddling things up too much in my own head. Probably. A hangover will do that.

Why so serious?

I don't know that I'd spend a whole lotta time pursuing Holliday either. I though he was vastly overrated by the time he left here, and I was not sorry to see him go. Maybe he could play a role in the 3-4, but it would be a pretty limited role, and I wouldn't be willing to pay him much more than the minimum for his services.

Aaron, allow me to oblige:

"[Ted Thompson] isn't complicated, Aaron. Just have to figure out what he's after."

Re: this post, "You crossed the line first, sir. You squeezed them, you hammered them to the point of desperation. And in their desperation they turned to a man they didn't fully understand."

Re: Thompson again, "Nothing. No matches on prints, DNA, dental. Clothing is custom, no labels. Nothing in his pockets but knives and lint. No name, no other alias."

Thompson before 2007: "You know that day that you once told me about, when Green Bay would no longer need [Favre]? It's coming."

Trying to explain Thompson's approach to personnel, "Some men aren't looking for anything logical, like [free agents]. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with. Some men just want to [trade down]."

To Brett Favre last offseason, "You didn't think I'd risk losing the battle for [Green Bay]'s soul in a fistfight with you? No. You need an ace in the hole. Mine's Rodgers."

And finally, what Aaron says to himself before every Thompson post: "Because he's the [GM] [Green Bay] deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So we'll [criticize] him because he can take it. Because he's not our hero. He's a silent guardian, a watchful protector. A dark knight."
