The Green Bay Packers Are Now a Very Young Football Team

The Green Bay Packers are entering a new era in 2023 and it goes beyond the fact that Aaron Rodgers is no longer with the team and Jordan Love is taking over as the quarterback. That change and the team’s salary cap crunch were the catalyst for GM Brian Gutekunst to make this team much younger. As a result, while the 2023 Packers may have as much or even more talent at some positions than the 2022 team, there will most certainly be some growing pains as these young players adjust to life in the NFL.

A year ago, the Packers had eight players on the roster who were 30 or over by the end of the season in Rodgers, Marcedes Lewis, Mason Crosby, Randall Cobb, Pat O’Donnell, David Bakhtiari, Preston Smith and Jarran Reed.

This year, the team currently has three players who are 30 or older on the roster (Bakhtiari, Smith and O’Donnell) and one of them is their punter.

The 2023 NFL Draft brought a lot of athletic players who can make this team faster and add more talent, but it is clear the team will be counting on players without a lot of experience to play major roles this season.

The team’s first-string quarterback has started one game in the NFL thus far and only appeared in 10 games.

No wide receiver presently on the roster has more than one year of NFL experience and has played more than 14 games in this league. The top four receivers on the current depth chart between them have started 20 games in this league.

The team will also be counting on two rookie tight ends to take major snaps and play significant roles in the passing game and tight end is typically a position that takes time to learn.

On the defensive line, other than Kenny Clark, the team will have T.J. Slaton who has two career NFL starts and Devonte Wyatt who has yet to start an NFL game in the starting lineup.

NFL rookies often struggle and only a handful make a smooth transition to the league and make a major impact in their first season.

There will almost certainly be times this season when Love and one or more of his receivers are not on the same page because of a misread coverage or a poorly run route.

The good thing is that the core of the offense will have experience at both running back and along the offensive line. A consistent running game and good pass protection up front should help keep the team out of too many third-and-long situations and help ease the transition these young players will go through.

The hope for the Packers is that the young players will go through their learning process together, mature and develop some of the chemistry and camaraderie that seemed to be missing between the team’s prior quarterback and some of his younger teammates in recent seasons.

The roster may very well be more talented this season than they were a year ago, but that may not necessarily lead to more production, at least not right away. But if this team takes one step back to take two or three steps forward and builds towards a stronger future, the sacrifice will be worth it.

In 2008, the Packers went 6-10 in Rodgers’ first season as the starter. While Rodgers clearly showed enough promise to earn a new contract midway through the season, the team still struggled to win games as they lost seven games by four points or less as Rodgers learned how to win.

We’ll see how Love handles a similar situation 15 years later and what the future holds as the next era of Packers football gets under way.

LoveGun.

Ready to bust out on the rest of the NFL, with a quality, seasoned OL in front of him, a punishing tandem of veteran, highly skilled RBs, and a boatload of new receiving weapons.

LaFleur finally has all the weapons he needs to run his scheme, and a willing QB1 to execute his Offense, per his intended vision. There will be lumps along the way, but, they should be able to work a lot of kinks out by mid season.

Add what should be an improved D, and a very well coached, veteran ST unit, and I think this 2023 team hits the ground running… and passing all over the yard, surprising many.

He may be in actuality.

Murphy is the Acting GM, while Gutey gets the title.

MLF carry's the title of HC...but is mostly a highly paid OC. He delegates the other duties of HC to his DC's.

Barry is DC, but now Bicassia may be the man in charge. This way, if the D stumbles early, Rich takes over quickly and formerly for "the sake of continuity."

Why wouldn’t they have made that switch already? I’m just curious, dblbogey.

Seems to me we all thought, “wtf?” last year. Yet, not only do they keep Barry, they entrust him with important newly drafted players.

Why would they do that?

Are LaFleur & Gutekunst fools?

Maybe there are bigger things in play that none of us fans are aware of.

1) Very young also means that, on the whole, they earn less - which is good considering the Packers cap situation.
2) It also means they do not lose so many guys over the next few seasons due to players being too old to play in the NFL any longer - which is also good.
3) Younger should also mean a slightly decreased injury rate - good again.

4) It does mean the team is (relative to other teams) naive and unpolished - that's bad.
5) The Packers still have Barry as DC - that's probably bad, but lets wait and see how that plays out.

The Packers under Ted Thompson often boasted the youngest roster in the league. And I say boasted becas it is definitely a good thing. Just like Aaron Rodgers did, Jordan Love will have the opportunity to "grow up" in the nfl along side some very talented young players

I'm excited, but worried about the O line. Yosh is a fine swing tackle, especially LT, but if he's the starting RT, we're in trouble. Myers has to improve or be replaced. Zach Tom needs to be starting, either center or RT. We'll need a 2nd year step up from someone when an injury hits. I really had hoped they'd pick up an OL in the first 4 rounds, but I can't argue with this draft class.

You do know Yosh was playing hurt late last season, right? He has played well at LT, RT previously. I see no concerns of "trouble" if he starts.

Personally I would like to see Tom to compete for C or RG...but I think Runyan is pretty good and getting better. Myer is the weak link on the starting line and competition will be good for him.

Early on last year you could see Tom's excellent footwork. Even when he played LG a few times. Guys just don't get by him in pass pro. That footwork also helps him run blocking on the wide zone plays. He's going to be vying for a starting spot. Like Jenks, he can play anywhere. If he's one of the top 5, and he may be, he needs a spot on the line.

IMO 2023 is the Packers biggest transition season since Bob Harlan, Ron Wolf, Mike Holmgren And Fritz Shurmur took over the team in 1992. And IIRC that team was not as young as this Packers team will be to begin the season.

The big difference is that in 1992 we had Harlan, Wolf, Holmgren and Shurmur and now we have Murphy, Gute, Matt LaChooch and Joe Barry. Gute is the only one who might be able to hang with the 1992 leadership team and by this time in his Packer tenure Wolf had won a Super Bowl. Gute has a few more seasons to go in the best case scenario.

I expect that it will be fun and interesting to watch the Packers through this period of transition and hopefully exponential growth. Bottom line is that anything can happen and our expectations will rise and fall weekly with every game. For 2023 I would say; "Fasten your seat belts boys, it's going to be a bumpy ride."
I'm looking forward to it. Thanks, Since '61

'61, Ray Rhodes was the first D coordinator then moved on to coach the Eagles, hauling Gruden along with him. Fritz came onboard in 1994. He put them over the top. Comparing Holmgren's crew with these apologists is painful for me. Take Care.

But it’s not a rebuild! Yes it is. The turnover has been huge in profile and number: the old have been and are departing, the young proliferating. Jones and Bakh aside, the holdovers are young and mostly relatively recent. This team is one trying to found the core of the next era.

As Shakespeare said: “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.”

“…by this time in his Packer tenure Wolf had won a Super Bowl.”

As had Thompson — for both, their sixth season with the team, which this season was for Gute.

One major difference: both Wolf and Thompson got to bring in their QB of choice in their first year, and in Thompson’s case, have him starting in his fourth year. Gute didn’t get his guy until his third year, and he isn’t starting until his seventh.

In 2008, the Packers were the youngest team in the league for the third straight year. One of the problems with that team was the defense, which led to changes in scheme and two high draft picks the following year. This year our defense should, at least on paper, be a whole lot better than 2008; and we may need them to be to carry us through at times to offset some of the follies our young offense may succumb to.

For the most part, Love has looked cool and calm in his brief time of meaningful action, even in that game against KC where he was blitzed all afternoon. That should be a very helpful quality as the passing game takes shape and finds its collective rhythm.

I agree with you about Love and the KC game. I was at the game and it was also very windy and loud. Not easy playing conditions. Mahommes, didn’t fair much better that day. But, Love stayed calm and collective. We may very well have a winner in Love……3 would be a charm.

How many times have we heard "It's a young man's game".

I've been a Packers fan "forever" and remember great players like LeRoy Butler when he came into the league and could run like the wind and over the years "Old Father Time" took a step away here and there until the last year he played for the Packers and I remember him running down the field and he looked like an old guy just plodding along. He was was one of my all time favorite players and I must have watched a replay of him jumping into the stands at Lambeau for the first time at least 20 times over the many years.

The uniforms remain essentially unchanged but the guys who put them on change.

We have a new QB, that alone suggests that we are in for an up and down ride. We have coaching questions and are pressed against the cap ceiling. This is the time to be young, to blood as much potential as we can.

We know not every player will blossom, but we want to give as many as we can enough opportunity to do so. Not only does that improve us next year and beyond, but it highlights where focus and the cap dollars that youth helps accumulate faster and non Draft recruitment will help most as we come out from under the current cap dead mountain.

There’s no point in paying players who won’t be part of 2024 and beyond unless they enable others to have a better chance to get better. We need to payoff the last era and recognize that this is the very start of a new one, or at least the first start in what will be interesting but a potentially bumpy ride back to a basis to contend for the big prizes.

Lukas Van Ness and Tucker Kraft: Two rookies I correctly predicted the Packers would draft, and I am SUPER excited for both of them. I seriously think Kraft could end the 3rd round curse; he seems awesome!

Musgrave and Reed I wasn’t initially as high on, but as I’ve learned more about them, I’ve grown to really like them too. Musgrave needs to add some strength (to help after the catch), but he could very well be the best TE in this class. His speed and movement skills are sensational. Reed can be our slot guy of the future.

I LOVED the picks of Karl Brooks and Anthony Johnson. Excellent value, and I think both can be immediate contributors. I would not be surprised if Dontayvion Wicks has a Romeo Doubs like training camp rise, as their skill sets seem similar.

I am a big fan of the youth movement. What it’s doing is it is getting us lots of young players on cheap contracts that will become the future of our team, cleaning out the salary cap and allowing us to make more win-now moves when we eventually contend again. I honestly think that, as long as MLF and Barry aren’t steering the ship next year, we can be in the title mix again as soon as 2024.

Also, Bissacia has been running minicamp while MLF was away for some fundraiser or something. Could be be the next Packers HC?

This team needed to get younger. I think Gute did the right thing in 2019 bringing in all those Free Agents. He tried to win and win quickly before Rodgers got to old. To bad he never got that 2nd WR to go with Davante AND a decent TE. don't even get me started on Jimmy Graham.

But I like what Gute did this year. I like the draft and even if you don't like every draft pick, it's easy to like what he did. Gary is hurt and nobody is sure when he'll be back and what he'll look like. My guess is it will take time, just like it does with everyone else. Van Ness was a need position and a pick at a PREMIUM position. Last year he gets beat up for a off-ball LB and DL. This year a premium position player and he still sucks according to many.

Musgrave, Reed, and Kraft we're all excellent picks IMO and Wooden, Wicks, Brooks, and Johnson were all solid picks, some even "Steals". They picked 13 players to go with the 10 picks from last year who ALL made the roster. That's damn near half the roster right there. This is exactly what this team needed. To get younger but mainly to get out of the cap hell they were in.

Look out at the trade deadline if the Packers are struggling for more of the "Youth Movement". Someone comes in and offers a say a 2nd round pick for Bakhtiari do you take it? Or maybe something for Preston Smith or even Aaron Jones (God I'd hate that!). But they just may trade then because it beats the hell out of cutting them next season.

As long as Murphy stays the hell out of Gutes way I believe this team is in good hands.

Idk about most but I don’t think the first round could have gone any better for us. LVN was the best possible player at no. 13 (thank goodness he wasn’t gone earlier), and could very well be the best edge rusher from this class 2-3 years down the road. And it fills one of our largest roster needs I LOVE that pick. An A+++ for Gutey.

Not only that, but the Bears massively reached for an OT (with a questionable work ethic) in the top 10, the Vikings took a 170 lb WR (while not addressing their 31st ranked defense despite Deonte Banks, Joey Porter jr, and Bryan Bresee still being on the board) and the Lions had the dumbest 1st round of the decade, REACHING for a RB at pick 12 that was thought by most to be a second rounder (and wasn’t even the best back in the class!) and taking an ILB at 18 (I truly believe Jack Campbell is a first round talent, though, but it was not a big need for them and the positional value is questionable)

Hope is no substitute for a good plan. We have six dependable offensive linemen, followed by Newman, Hanson, Rhyan , Wallace and Jones. We dress 9. Pray for no injuries, because if we get people hurt, Newman & Co. are going to take an ass-kicking. I'm hoping somebody got better, but IMO, we should have done more to strengthen the offensive line than we have so far.

We might be surprised and see the team pick up a guy at roster cutdowns who can help on the line. As long as our starters are OK, and we don't have to get down to the 7-8-9th guy, we should be OK.

Hope for the best, plan for the worst.

IDK Leather head. The fact that the Packers drafted zero O-linemen despite having a multitude of draft choices tells me management likes what they have. I personally feel Hanson is a lost cause, but Newman may well be serviceable as a guard. He rarely gets beaten physically, but often gets beaten by stunts. That can be cured by good coaching and some experience. The key for me though is the Packers have to believe they have talent in Rhyan, Walker and Jones or they would have drafted more O-lineman. Time will tell, but I trust Packer management on this one.

You do realize that before Graham arrived in Green Bay, he was generally considered to be a future HOFer? And on the basis of his career accomplishments, he might end up in Canton.? And in his first year here, he had one of the best receiving seasons for a TE in Packer history?

Yes, Graham was past his prime. Not his fault. And we probably overpaid for him, and that's not his fault.

Ask me why I like big body TEs who get their man blocked and catch 2 passes/game more than I like a TE who makes big plays downfield.

Hindsight. Bennet was (prior to signing in GB) a better all-around tight end. An equal in pass catching, a MUCH better blocker. Jared Cook wanted more money than Thompson thought he was worth (he wanted as much as Bennet was available for) and I'm just guessing here, Thompson was punishing the agent.

Not many criticized the signing at the time, most people were delighted. In hindsight it was a huge mistake.

There should always be concern when “institutional knowledge” takes a severe hit. In the case of the 2023 Packers, the main concern would be the tight ends and wide receivers rooms.
They really don’t have any significant carryover players who have multiple years of starting experience.
The other groups all have at least one.
Losing institutional knowledge can be catastrophic, because it can be decades or more of retained and refined ideas. Lazard learned from Adams learned from Nelson learned from Driver learned from Jennings learned from Freeman ad infinitum.

There is always a disconnect between workers and management, and when a coaching regime changes, the players retain the past lessons. For instance, McCarthy preached “overcoming adversity.” Those lessons would be passed down by the players, more than the new coaches.

PEO, I’m going to be VERY interested to see what Team BigDog decides to play for. If he chooses Love & the Packers over Rodgers & the Jets, that would make one helluva statement.

Mercedes Lewis coming back here for one more season to show these young’s the ropes as a teammate? Huge.

Yeah, I’d love to have him as a coach, but, Mercedes probably wants to squeeze another season out.

What if he sees GB as his best route to a ring? Unlikely, but…

Who do you not put on the team if he comes back? The TE room situation wouldn't be too bad but when you take into account the total # of TE's & WR's on a team are tied together. Might that impact a Melton, or a Toure?

I think Deguara will face the toughest uphill battle. Especially with Lew Nichols lll able to take FB reps.

Also, I’m glad you mentioned the WR group.

Watson
Doubs
Toure
Reed
Wicks
DuBose

I think those 6 are safe. The battles will be for our PS and quality depth in case of injury. Watts looks really good!

Guys like Watson & Doubs & Toure & even Melton learned the offense in one-season. They undoubtedly learned from the veteran's about life on & off the field. Both the good & bad! They will be capable of passing that knowledge on!

"There will almost certainly be times this season when Love and one or more of his receivers are not on the same page because of a misread coverage or a poorly run route."

Exactly why I am opposed to signing a cheap vet TE or WR to take valuable snaps in camp, preseason and season practices from the younger, more talented players.

And I also disagree with Rodger's being responsible for his 6-10 inaugural season. He consistently gave leads to Bob Sander's D whose brand in 2008 was consistently collapsing late in games lost.

Ironically, Love's inaugural season could be subjected to the same fateful D. I hope not and also hope Bisaccia's promotion to Assist. HC was to offset MLF's mistake retaining Barry Ball.

The youthfulness of Packer teams of the past burned longer, while the youthfulness of the present teams seem to burn out as fast as sparklers. Granted, there are reason for such quick sparkler burn-outs, but nonetheless, their sparkle is shorter.

IIRC, sparklers appeared to be the hardest/took longest to ignite. I'm not sure if that can be tolerated today, especially if the sparkler fades faster than it took to get lit.

If he’s not the obvious only threat (he played almost no time with Doubs) I think he’s fine. LaFleur mostly went with Cobb and Lazard as his only co-receivers who drew no one and also had him running stop routes making him a sitting target as soon as he caught it.

It's a little unsettling how young the Packers are going into 2023, but more so it's exciting.
I'm bracing myself for ups and downs due to learning, but still hoping there's a lot more good than bad.
If we could win 9 games next season, and play hard and smart throughout, it would likely be a fun ride.
If the ride is bumpier and it's less than 9 wins, I'm still enthusiastic about a new era for the Packers.
***
A key is players not blaming each other but developing a camaraderie in which they play every game all the way until the very end.
That may seem like a cliche, but with so many games being so close in the NFL, it's essential for young players to develop their patience and poise and perseverance.
Suffer together as a team, celebrate together as a team.

"There will almost certainly be times this season when Love and one or more of his receivers are not on the same page because of a misread coverage or a poorly run route."

It true, then nothing will have changed from last season. Didn't we experience the same last year (2022) with the young WR's when QB1 wouldn't come to practice with them at OTA's?

Our new QB has more talent overall in the WR/TE department than we have seen in years. We have a very good run game and decent Defense and ST. Love will be playing behind a solid OL. Love will play the offense as it was intended and ML will scheme receivers open. Love will go thru progressions when throwing the ball. I have the utmost confidence we will have a better record than last season and be in the playoffs. How far we go is a question mark with JL. I'm excited for the Packers future. Next season we may have a little CAP space for a FA or two to solidify a couple spots that may be weak. Good times are not too far off. I believe we will have 2-#1 picks next season if things go awry. GPG

True...DA started out really bad with drops and health. He stuck with it and with hard work...really became special. We're gonna lean hard on the ML system and run 60-70 % I'm guessing and the other 30-40% will be schemed open and move the chains. We will have some drops...and some nice catches and YAC. This year we have a lot more depth at TE and WR talent. I say it's better than last with a QB who is more than half way in/out and plays better. Lazard, Cobb were #3 WR's and DA, MVS were gone. Yea, were better there at WR. I think we carry 3RB's on the 53...and we use all 3. Watson will be a #1 WR, Doubs and Reed #2's in skill/ ability. 2-promising TE's with good speed. Sweeps and RB's out of the back field and screens. NO MORE RUNNING THE CLOCK TO ZERO AND THROWING THE BALL TO WHO HE WAS GONNA PRE-SNAP. Can't wait for the Love era....GPG 2023....

I know a Favre quote is not a popular thing now but this one is not from Brett. It is from Brett’s dad.

He had his son a future HOF QB and had a lot of success . asked why he rarely threw the ball as Brett’s HS coach he replied, “ we didn’t throw the ball because we DIDN’T HAVE TO”

I know that due to many rule changes the NFL is now a “ passing league” BUT it is still true that “ when you throw the ball 3 things can happen and 2 of them are bad” .

Let’s see what this year brings !! I am Excited !!

Just watched the entire game of last year's game between Dallas and the Packers. Just a few observations, first off Watson did have 3 TDs, but he had at least three or four bad routes and two drops. The drops and route running issues were before he got his first TD but he needs a huge improvement in how to be a NFL receiver. He can't be strictly a home run receiver.
Green Bay has got to either keep Aaron Jones or get his placement ASAP.
The offensive line can be very, very good and do have some decent reserves.
All the discussion about Joe Berry's defense....is well deserved. Kenny Clark may be an all pro player, but not last year. Why blitz if you aren't going to have tight coverage on outside receivers. Twice it happened in that game, both with Alexander giving too much cushion. I can hope the defense is much better with everyone healthy, but in that game Savage had no impact.
Love will have some potential weapons that he can make games very interesting. The defense just looks dysfunctional maybe it was the DB coach...I don't know. But Green Bay needs some real pass rushers over the next two years or they will be picking high regardless of what Love does for the next few years.
Just MHO

Lucas Van Ness, Colby Wooden & Karl Brooks should figure in big at pass rush, from all over that Packers defensive front.

Add in Enagbare in his year 2, another player equally sure at DE/DT, and the production of these 4 players alone is really quite high. 84” wingspan. Wow.

Then there’s Wyatt, kind of an unfamiliar quantity at DT, also in his year 2.

All this without mentioning our top two pass rushers in Rashan Gary & Preston Smith.

All 3 from this years draft class mentioned bring off the charts production, in both pass rush and run stop. These are very complete, versatile players, equally adept at both DT and DE.

From a pure pass rush POV:
Van Ness: 43 pressures, 20 hurries , 6 QB hits, 8 sacks
Wooden: 35 pressures, 24 hurries , 5 QB hits, 6 sacks
Brooks: 60 pressures, 43 hurries , 5 QB hits, 12 sacks

All 3 players with NFL ready size/speed/power. Yeah, they’re young, but they’re Pro ready in their physical attributes.

Imagine how much more all of these players could bring us in the next 2-3 years!

Also, we’re going to have some SERIOUS interior pass rush. This I cannot wait to see!

*(UDFA Brenton Cox Jr. has numbers in his last full season nearly identical to Wooden’s).

It’s always unpredictable to determine what players can perform early in their careers. With technology and the vast amount of personal trainers/coaches/etc., rookies are coming into the league more ready to play than ever. But of course there are sooooo many variables.

If a team has an entrenched starter, then any rookie that gets drafted is most likely not gonna see much playing time at their position…unless injuries happen. So again, it’s always tough to predict.

This point can go either way, but many of these players got an extra year in college. Yes, one of those years they could not gear up and play, but it still gave them more time to interact with coaches to better refine their skills and build their strength and conditioning.

Love’n the “youts”-(Jersey Al) movement and excited to see how all of these pieces come together!!. Forgot to give JA props for his My Cousin Vinny reference last week.

Exhilarating start at 6-1, then a highly frustrating finish at 2-6-1.
As a junior in high school, an excitable teenager, and a sports fanatic -- that was a life lesson in the ups and downs of sports.
About 45 years later, it's also a life lesson about life: Gotta take the bad with the good, and keep on persevering for the good.

It’s a brave new world, my friends.
A fresh start. Exciting because the “safety net” at the QB position is gone. I think most of us are optimistic about what Love can do; but he is still largely an unknown quantity.
One thing that’s been bugging me lately: why do some fans love the Packers by hating the Packers?
Seems kinda odd.
I don’t mean merely questioning the moves they’ve made or not made. That stuff is fun to debate. I mean just an overwhelming negativity about everything. Cheer up, hang on, and enjoy the ride!
My son just turned 29 the other day. When he was 12 I took him to Six Flags for his first taste of “real” roller coasters. We agreed that part of the excitement was due to them being just a little bit scary.
Same deal w GB in 2023 and beyond. (But mostly 2023 because after this season we’ll have a much better idea about Love’s capabilities.)
Can I get a Ric Flair “whooooo!”?

Pause. Looks straight into camera. Cocks head slightly. Eyes bugged out.

“Whoooooo!”

I’ve experienced this phenomenon with everyone here screaming for Joe Barry’s head, including most of my closest friends at CHTV, and man, I was right there too, for a time…

Then I started trying to figure out why he might have done some things, the circumstances involved in changing out schemes from Pettine to Barry, the logistics involved in acquiring scheme specific players, and ZERO comments on his job performance from those in charge.

The math on that = he didn’t have the players to do what THEY wanted.

Since Barry’s hiring, I’ve felt the defense we are - about to see (we haven’t seen it yet) - is going to be from both Gutekunst’s & LaFleur’s collective vision.

Joe Barry was simply someone they trusted to help them pull this off in a type of partnership.

Judging by the players added, I think we are very close to actually seeing their, “Illusion of Complexity” Defense.

I’m here for it. For THAT, not the stuff unworthy of being discussed due to being smack dab in the middle of a 3 year transformation process.

In other words, I think we’re going to have something exciting to talk about on D, and this entire Packers team.

It’s almost as if this Packers staff has been on lockdown in terms of commentary about what they are doing.

Are we right in front of it being unleashed upon the NFL?

Whoooooo!

(If anyone else can figure out WTAF is going on with our defense without saying “Barry and LaFleur are idiots,” I’m all ears).

Hot take. 100%.

When we were 4-8, and Gary was lost for the season, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that they decided to shit can the season in favor of confirming which players needed to be replaced and why?

We stopped blitzing and switched to zone coverage (not every DB proficient in press coverage is also good in zone) our last 5 games.

Zone is not a particularly bad coverage if you have the right players. We didn’t.

We know Barry wants players who can play both press & zone. (Hey, that’s one thing we know!)

And, there goes Adrian Amos, one of my favorite defenders from the D of the past 5 years.

We lacked pure pass rush depth, severely. We lacked run stop up front, severely.

At this point, has Amos declined too much for the price he can command? He’s still out there.

Personally, I hate it when GB can’t stop the run. When a D can’t stop the run, the offense holds all the cards in the down and distance game.

They say that the old Peyton Manning Colt defenses didn’t HAVE TO stop the run because so often the Colts had the lead in the second half so opponents had to go pass-heavy. Hmmm…not bad. But I still think top defenses don’t struggle vs the run.

We shall see how things develop in GB. Can’t wait!

That’s the crux of the biscuit right there: run stop. Also, it is a young man’s game.

Tarvarius Moore is an assassin vs. the run. He has those innate abilities to sniff them out before the become successful plays for the opposition.

Tarvarius Moore has speed too.

We’ll see, but, I think both he and Anthony Johnson Jr. (Who is also at his best in run stop) will be our new starting Safeties before it’s all said and done.

As you've pointed out, there are a number of reasons why trading Bakhtiari makes sense for the Packers and the Jets.

I'm not willing to go out on the limb as far as you have, but it certainly would make some sense. Personally, I think we only have six dependable linemen right now, and I'd be reluctant as hell to part with one of them.
