Report: Randall Cobb Gets $13 Million Signing Bonus

Details have begun to emerge regarding the contract Randall Cobb has signed with the Green Bay Packers.

According to Tom Pelissero of USA Today:

Cobb's contract breakdown was important to determining how much money the Packers have left under the 2015 salary cap and how they'll have to structure any other remaining free agents they may sign, including offensive lineman Bryan Bulaga.

Do you have an idea how much cash there is to work with after this?

So Cobb's cap hit should be $5.35 mil for this year. ($13 SB / 4 yr = 3.25 cap hit for SB) + ($15.1 pay this year - $13 mil SB = 2.1 cap hit for pay).

With a total yearly average of $10 mil, I would have preferred more of that number dumped into year 1. As it stands, a tick under $35 mil will count in years 2-4.

But that's deep cap geek stuff. I'm glad he's signed. It's a bit more than I would have hoped but not a bad deal.

Gosh Hank, I guess I am way down in the geek stuff. I made the same calculation, but my heart lifted when I saw the $3.5 million roster bonus for 2016, which I bet is not guaranteed until the 3rd day of the new league year in 2016, or thereabouts. Note that Shields' roster bonus ($2.5 million IIRC) becomes guaranteed today and Rodgers' $10 million roster bonus becomes guaranteed on March 14. It probably means that Cobb's cap hit in 2016 is around $7.5-$9 million.

I am waiting anxiously for information regarding Bulaga's guarantee. I'd have paid $7.5 to $8 million/yr for Bulaga but wanted the guarantee to be not more than 30% with some of that coming in the form of roster bonuses in yr. 2 and 3. Now that the price was less, I would be more flexible about the guarantee. Make no mistake: Guaranteed money is king in the NFL!

I looked at 2016's cap on another site. Daniels, Neal, Perry, and Hayward are the main FAs. But Shields' and Nelson's cap hits increase by $7 million in 2016. Daniels will get a big increase, Hayward likely will get $4 or $5 more, unless he plays even better, but I don't think Neal can expect an increase. Perry might get some increase. The cap for 2016 might be a bit dicey even if Peppers is gone and we save $8 million on the cap from him.

Cobb's cap hit is likely $5.35 for 2015, but there probably are some roster and work out bonuses too that would increase the cap hit a little bit.

PFT lists Cobb's cap hits as such:

The cap numbers are $5.35 million in 2015, $9.15 million in 2016, $12.75 million in 2017, and $12.75 million in 2018.

Thanks. Our cap in 2016 is looking a bit dicey. TT might need some rollover from this year.
