Report: Packers Cut Hargrove, Four Others Friday

According to reports, the Green Bay Packers cut defensive tackle Anthony Hargrove Friday afternoon.

The Green Bay Packers have apparently seen enough of defensive tackle Anthony Hargrove.

According to Howard Balzer, the Packers cut Hargrove Friday. GM Ted Thompson also let go receiver Andrew Brewer, safety Micah Pellerin, tackle Herb Taylor and cornerback Dion Turner.

UPDATE: The Packers have officially announced the release of all five players.

The Packers signed Hargrove this offseason to a minimum deal, but it appears GM Ted Thompson has not seen enough to keep the veteran defensive tackle on the roster.

Hargrove, 29, played sparingly in three preseason games and had not yet recorded a tackle. He was becoming increasingly buried on the depth chart at defensive end.

There was originally speculation that the Packers would give Hargrove an extended look to make the roster.

Suspended by the league for his role in the New Orleans Saints pay-for-injury program in 2009, Hargrove was scheduled to miss the first eight games of 2012. His spot would not have counted against the Packers' opening day 53-man roster, leaving Thompson with a potential decision after the suspension had ended.

Releasing him today erases that chance.

Letting go of Taylor ends a horrific camp and preseason for the offensive tackle. He was beaten badly in his one start this preseason against the San Diego Chargers, and his play with the second team left much to be desired.

The Packers will still need to make 10 other cuts before Monday, when rosters must be at 75 players.

The Packers made it official.

I'm guessing he didn't show enough to make up for the suspension. Little to no hit to the cap space.

Makes sense. With Worthy and Daniels playing well, Raji and Pickett back in the fold, and Mike Neal available after a few games (not to mention CJ Wilson and Jarius Wynn) the line appears fairly deep right now. Probably wouldn't have played much anyway.

I am a little surprised that they did not keep Hargrove around as injury insurance, if nothing else.

I saw this coming. Hargrove has been quite all camp and preseason. Plus his suspension is looming. I am loving how aggressive TT has been this offseason. Just one more thing left to do. Let's get us a veteran backup QB and call it a day!

Strange to cut Hargrove now with no real penalty for keeping him around til his suspension is up. Guess they wanted the young guys to get all the reps going forward.

Just read a JSO article that makes it sound as though Hargrove was becoming increasingly disgruntled with his lack of reps in camp and in preseason games.

My guess is the Packers saw his discontent starting to manifest itself as a bad attitude, and decided to cut bait before he became a locker room distraction.

He wasn't cut because of poor performance. He wasn't getting the reps to even mess up. I feel bad for the guy. We, and more importantly, Hargrove, has no idea why he got an 8 game suspension. First it was the "show me the money" stuff, which he was acquited of. I know he rated no higher then 20th on the Saint's hit list. So why is this mans career gone Mr. Goodell?

Seattle made no attempt to resign Hargrove this year. The Eagles cut him before the season started last year. Maybe he just wasn't that good.

Speaking of "cuts"...
...and a guy that CAN'T be cut: Saturday.

Tell me that was some fluke play, and I'll NEVER see that crap again.

Yeah, that Bengals LB made Saturday look old. I watched him specifically for the next 5 plays or so because of that. He looked ok. Not powerful. But ok.

Face it, he's an old guy for his position. He'll probably be only an average starter for GB.

Hargrove was absolutely no surprise---more of a player in the eyes of the press than anything else. He's been cut within a year from every team he's played for. Bad 'tude'. And, the suspension being upheld sealed it. Let him take his "pay me" act to the Vikings.

We need to find a veteran offensive lineman. Also, a veteran backup QB. We could easily drop Harrell and find one.

Maybe they already have someone in mind for O-line but want to deal with the talent they currently have until the regular season starts, to see who (of the people they currently have) they want to keep.

Then after they cut to the limit after the 4th pre game + one or two more, they'll sign an o-lineman.

But, who knows, maybe Datko is better than we think. Or maybe Sherrod, like mentioned, is closer to returning than we think.

Dollar to donuts that the Packers have identified a list of o-linemen from other teams that could be cut and will pick up a good player off waivers. It's clearly the weakest position group on the team (not counting QB).

I don't think any of us should be getting our hopes up for a last minute oline vet. We're a draft n develop team. Retraining an oline vet after camp and preseason is over isn't much of an insurance. These guys have to gel. Mccarthy's offense is no joke. Good luck learning on the fly. If we pick one up, they will be way back on the Depth. If injury occurs I see EDS coming in first for interior replacement. If a tackle goes down, they will bring in EDS and shift Lang to outside. If multiple guys go down, expect a scrub to take a guard position (datko) and then a shifting of tackles. Depth will come from existing guys currently on the team. Hopefully datko will go squad. And if we need him it will be late season where his practice will payoff or better yet Sherrod is back.

Datko at guard. Hard to see. Aside from that, that's pretty much how I see things shaking out if there is an injury or two.

I think you are 100% correct on your assumptions. I also think this might end up being another Jenkins situation. Saturday may not be some young scrub but I think letting Wells go will come back to haunt us.

He was too much money. TT has GJ, CM3, Raji, and ARod to resign in just the next two years. That's like 200 mil between them! Plus, Wells never forgave MM for benching him in 08. He didn't want to come back anyway.

I'm paraphrasing, but Ted recently said in an interview with McGinn (I believe), that they made a strong attempt to resign Wells, but he had his reasons/had made up his mind (to leave).

And I'm definitely not going to label Saturday a concern after one whiffed block...Wells had his share of those over the years.

What the devil is anyone nervous about? A key injury is always problematic. Sherod is expected to be cleared in immediate future, but the Packers will play it conservatively. Detrick-Smith is a capable backup on the inside. Taylor has been cut, praise the Lord.
