Good stuff Brian. I'm always interested in hearing more about NFL-level technique. Paul mentioned that one DL's arms were too short, and he can be neutralized by an OL with good technique. Can you explain that a little bit?

This is an extreme hypothetical, but just imagine if a player's arms were only half as long as normal. How would they do in the NFL? Terrible, right?

Same thing here. Martin's arms are shorter than most defensive linemen, especially Pro Bowl defensive linemen. Can he overcome the odds and perform well despite shorter arms? Certainly, it's just that the odds of him doing that are longer.

That tells the Packers that they probably shouldn't risk a high-round draft choice on Martin. If they like him, they can still draft him, they're just not going to take a guy like him until the mid rounds.

I was more thinking in terms of the physical technique itself. Is it really any different than we were taught in high school, or is it just a matter of more consistent execution combined with everyone being larger?

I think it's definitely different than high school. The players' technique is just so much better. It's not to say a guy like Martin can't succeed. He has great upper body strength and a good motor. But if he faces an opponent with those longer arms, he's at a small disadvantage, all other things being equal.
