Al, great interview. I think you’re right on the money with most of you’re comments. Especially, with your thoughts on the Packers play-calling, play design, and repetition of the same plays game after game.

I was at the Vikings game and had a good seat. I could see the whole field. We had receivers open running over the middle of the field, yet AR was throwing long outs to the sidelines. Whether that was the play-calling or AR making his own decisions, I don’t know. All I know is that the Packers seem to try to make the more difficult play than the easier one.

My impression of the situation is that the Packers offense suffers from two stubborn men trying to impose their will on the opposing defense. I don’t know how else to explain what has happened to one of the best offenses in the NFL turning into what looks like an expansion team offense with a mediocre quarterback.

Mike McCarthy seems to be calling the same plays because he is of the mindset that these are our best plays given that down and distance and he stubbornly dares the opposing defense to stop us. If you’re the opposing defensive coordinator and you see that play-calling tendency, then it’s easy to have your players prepared for what’s coming. And it seems that AR has a similar stubborn mindset only in a different way. He feels he can make any throw at any time and he stubbornly chooses to make the more difficult throw than the easier throw over the middle or a check-down pass.

In both cases, I believe the Packers offense is suffering from competitive pride and personal ego. Although having some of those competitive qualities can be the hallmark of a champion, I think in this case both MM and AR have to find a way to put those tendencies of imposing their will on defenses aside and take what the defense is giving them, instead.

Somehow those two men have to find a way to put the wheels back on this buggy otherwise we'll not be winning another Lombardi Trophy anytime soon.
