PLAYOFFS!? You Betcha, Against All Odds

After starting the season 3-6, the Packers finished 6-2 to clinch a playoff berth.

Sports giveth, and sports taketh away. They can provide fans with excruciating moments (just ask fans of the Chicago Bears), ones that make fans question why they spend hours watching when despair is a likely emotion in the end. But sports can also provide fans with exhilarating moments, ones that motivate and inspire. What the Green Bay Packers did Sunday against their storied rival – clinch a playoff spot – was nothing short of exhilarating.

The odds were not in the storied franchise’s favor entering the 2023 campaign. The team had a $40 million dead cap hit on their salary cap books after trading quarterback Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets, which severely hamstrung them during the 2023 free agency period. The trade of Rodgers paved the way for Jordan Love, a first-year starter who only had one career start under his belt, to take over the reins, but the cupboard was all but empty in terms of veteran skill position players. Plus, the organization was the youngest in the NFL based on average age.

Once the season unfolded, the odds were still not in their favor. All-Pro left tackle David Bakhtiari missed all but one game. Jaire Alexander missed 10 games. Christian Watson missed eight games. Aaron Jones missed six games. And as a result of the latter two lengthy absences, Love rarely, if ever, had a full arsenal of offensive weapons. The defense was bending, and also breaking while being ravaged by injuries. After the trade deadline, their No. 2, and occasionally their No. 1, cornerback was a seventh-round rookie. At the midway point of the season, the Packers were 3-6, and despite a string of victories thereafter, were left with little chance at making the playoffs after a frustrating loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 15 at Lambeau Field, which featured a porous defensive performance. The rest is, well, history.

The Packers will be the youngest team by average age to make the playoff field since 1978, according to Sunday’s CBS broadcast, and so it is anyone’s guess how far Green Bay will advance in the playoffs as they travel to Arlington, Texas, for a wildcard matchup with the Dallas Cowboys this Sunday at 3:30 p.m. CST. Make no mistake about it, though: the offense has been cooking as of late, and the defense has returned to Joe Barry’s patented bend-but-don’t-break philosophy. Barry’s unit has also returned to getting after the quarterback, with 11 sacks over the last three games.

Since coming back from injury, Jones has rattled off three straight games of at least 100 yards on the ground and averaged nearly six yards per carry. Meanwhile, Love has produced 20 total touchdowns and one interception over the last eight contests. And in the biggest game of the season, he was 27 of 32 (84.4%) for 316 yards and two touchdowns. His passer rating (128.6) and completion percentage were season-high marks, and his completion percentage was the second-highest by a Green Bay quarterback in the last 40 seasons. Big-time players make big-time plays in big-time games, and Love made plenty of them Sunday, including a 15-yard strike to tight end Tucker Kraft while evading the pocket on third down to put the game on ice. For the game, the 2020 first-round selection completed 7-of-8 passes for 76 yards and two touchdowns on the money down.

The wide receiver room does not have a regular contributor who has been in the league for more than two seasons – the combined 2023 compensation for the team’s seven wide receivers is $7.5 million, according to former team vice president Andrew Brandt – nor do they have a true No. 1 wide receiver at this juncture. However, neither of those aspects have hampered the offense as they have received production from up and down the lineup throughout the latter part of the season. Five different wide receivers have led the team in receiving yards since Week 11, and two different receivers have amassed over 100 receiving yards in the last two games (Bo Melton, 105 yards in Week 17; Jayden Reed, 112 yards in Week 18).

The Packers should not be among the 14 postseason teams based on everything they went through this season and what transpired during the offseason. After all, many dubbed this season as a rebuilding one. But here we are. An exhilarating moment, with hopefully more to come.

I’d include the many games Campbell missed and the huge number of games played injured by Packers.

So much to agree with about the future of Love and the rest of the receivers. Keep good protection around him and give him time, and this group of receivers and TEs is going to difficult to slow down. Does anybody remember that 2011 offense? Or the 2020 offense? That's what I'm expecting.

So much young, impressive talent at WR, but figuring Watson will miss 6-10 games a year and there are games where 1 or 2 other guys are out with injuries through the long season, I wouldn't mind another 2nd day WR pick. I hope we can work out keeping Jones another year, but we still need to draft a RB too. I also want a center and tackle/guard. That concludes my offense's draft/free agency wish list. It's sure nice the way the Packers draft QB's before they need them. It seems to work.

Moving up from #3 to #2, next season we face SF, Miami and the Iggles. Losing winnable games will not be as forgiving.

too early.
Let's enjoy the moment a bit for now.
Free Agency, the draft and next year's schedule can sit idol we we reflect on the highs and lows of the last four months.
I feel like we've been a roller coaster. Who can say with certainty where and when it will end?
I'm ready to jump back on no matter what.
And holy shit when did Tucker Craft learn how to block so well?
Best game of a TE blocking in space that I've seen in a while. That is really had to do well.

He always blocked well in space. They ran wide-zone and Air Raid at SD State. He was not asked to do much Inline, edge work.

MNBadger,
Musgrave and Kraft were guys I wanted before the draft but I will acknowledge I was more in Musgrave's camp. Boy oh boy is Tucker becoming a favorite of mine. Tough rough player who isn't afraid of anything combined with a strong blocker and receiver. These two are going to terrorize defenses for years to come.

Sounds bad, but with free agency, salary caps, injuries, those teams may suck next year.

Indeed, look at the 2023 MLB season. The Mets and Padres were loaded. The Dodgers and Orioles won over 100 games.

In the NFL the Eagles seem to slide from dynasty to dumpster fire every five years or so.

We only have 7 WRs if you exclude Simore Toure.

Out of five incomplete pass attempts last night I remember three; two in the end zone, with great efforts by both WRs. Doubs basically caught it but the defender got a PBU, knocking it out of his hands. Melton struggled like hell to control it as it rolled down his body; I think that call could have gone either way. Great throws by JL both times. One other incomplete was thrown short, with the intended receiver trying to dig it out of the dirt but unable to. I forget who that was?

Anybody remember the other two? This number is STELLAR! And the O line and running game are a big part of it :)

One is at the end of the first half to Heat into the end zone and were almost INT.

And another was at 2nd and 6 on the first drive (that ended in missed FG) of the 1st Q, to the WIcks.

Well, that's why the season is played out on the field instead of paper. The Packers should be among the 14 postseason teams because they earned it not only by winning the games they needed to at the end, but by beating two supposedly superior teams who are currently the number three seeds in each conference.

You could also probably write a somewhat similar story with the Houston Texans, who won their division with a rookie head coach, rookie QB, and a rookie OC.

To be honest, I can't believe how fast some of our young WRs and TEs (not to mention Love) have caught on, and most importantly, executed. And it's been collective--everyone has made big contributions. Last but not least, it was very satisfying to see our defense finally play to its potential in the season finale, with, once again, contributions from everyone. We were all begging to see some containment where it mattered, and they delivered.

I was disappointed that we didn’t get to see DuBose; he can be the best contested-catch WR on the team. He also was a very good blocker and special teams player in college.

"defense has returned to Joe Barry’s patented bend-but-don’t-break philosophy."

I watched both games (vikings and Bears) and didn't see that at all. This was a completely different Barry Defense. The one most fans and players have been begging for 2 years to see. I give Joe credit for finally getting it, but if it takes a DC 2 years to get it that means he's an imbecile.

So when Barry's contract runs out after this season, maybe the Packers should see if any NFL, NCAA or High School team goes after Barry before even thinking of resigning him. I bet there aren't any takers (well maybe a HS or 2).

Otherwise, What a glorious day! We still have meaningful football to play and Aaron Rodgers reminds us why getting rid of his tired toxic shitbag was the greatest move of 2023.

Yes and I really don't like to bring him up as he's no longer a Green Bay Packer so he's irrelevant, but every single time he opens his mouth it's like champagne corks popping and another celebration that he is gone. Jets he's your complicated fella now.

The draft can wait because who knows exactly how things might play out next Sunday?

Having said that.....I hope with all the skilled position talent the Packers have they focus big time on large immovable bodies on both sides of the trenches early in the draft. I want to compete with the Lions, Ravens, and 49's. The big uglies!

1971? He was a Green Bay high school legend and won two national championships at Nebraska. Everyone was so proud and excited. Sadly, he was a plodding and inaccurate passer. Not ready for the NFL. Devine could never find a quarterback.

Bitter,
Wow! I had forgotten all about Tagge. But, between '73 and '91 the QB position in GB was a revolving door and a "Who-Dat"?
John Hadl, Carlos Brown (A.K.A 'Bubba), Jim Del Gaizo, David Whitehurst, Randy Wright, and damn, there's probably a half-dozen more!
***Check that half-dozen, there were 9 more***

As with all things, streaks and records must fall, and this Packer team seems ripe to end the Cowboys home win steak.

Your next to last paragraph speaks volumes

I think and believe that the best aspect of this Offense is that there is no #1 WR, and that serves to allow Love freedom to choose the 'open guy', which seems to be near always. Sure, I'd bet that he might have a lean to one, or at least is developing such a report, (don't say it loud, Wicks or Reed) with either being equal to the task. I also think that this lacking of a 'true' #1 is what will hamper the Cowboy Defense to an equal level of our Barry's fault, of many a previous game.

Choose Love, Choose the open guy.

Rodgers was the open guy QB when he started out. Maybe when he and Jordy formed a bromance AR started to favor a receiver, but clearly when Davante developed into a WR#1 AR rode that for as long as he could. Ultimately, that lead to the 2022 mess when DA was gone.

Honestly, a playoff spot wasn't that important to me as a fan. I just wanted this young team to show up in a big game. They did, but it wasn't perfect. And that's ok.

The more important reps this young team gets is gold for the future. All the people who railed on Love and Gutes should be eating major crow now. As for LaFleur, he's going to have to further understand the strengths of his players. But I've seen progress in this. Barry, well, he does tend to show up for the big games. But it's the lesser teams that he just doesn't seem to bring the same level of effort to. This to me is not a fixable issue long term. Just too many soft and bad game plans.

It's just exciting to watch this young team grow! Let's enjoy the ride and not let our expectations go wild in these playoffs. GPG

Maybe it's time to rethink the concept of a "number one wide receiver". Both Favre and Rodgers had their favorites, which meant the defense could concentrate more players on one WR, knowing the ball was probably come his way. With Favre, it was Chmura, when he needed a first down. For Rodgers, it was Nelson, then Adams when he emerged as elite. The most notorious of this tendency came in the championship game against the Buccaneers, when the Packers needed a TD, and Adams had three passes thrown to him, although he was obviously smothered by a defense that was all too aware of Rodgers' tendencies. So they settled for a FG. Game over. With Love, he'll throw it to whoever is open, spreading the ball around and preventing the defense from concentrating on one player.

Jordan Love is a Franchise QB. There is no doubt in my mind if he continues this level of play, the Packers can make a run. Also the forgotten man, Matt Lefleur. IMO, this season has been his best coaching job in Green Bay. The youngest, cheapest offense in the league with Injuries galore and a first year starting QB. This is a top 5 offense....This turnaround from 3-6 does not happen with mediocre coaching, certainly not bad coaching. That is great coaching. Remember, this team's two biggest cap hits on offense this year are Aaron Rodgers who is a member of the New York Jets and David Bahktiari who has played one game and has a bionic knee....wow

I loved the Watson pick 2 years ago, even though I would have taken him with the 2nd first round pick. He is electric when he can play, but is hurt alot. Maybe 15 pounds would do his body some good. I doubt he would lose much speed. I would also take away the jet sweeps from him. Too much start, stop, and direction change. That the play he got hurt on again and you can only injure a hamstring or anything and its gets weaker each time. We need him on the field and healthy. Maybe draft Xavier Legette-South Carolina or Johnny Wilson-FLA State.
Both are over 6'3 and 235 and run 4.3-4.4. Wilson in particular would be a weapon any where he lined up. 6'7 and 240 @ WR. Wow.

Do the Packers have a chance to continue this season journey? Sure. What are the odds. Not great. But life is full of not great odds for many, still many beat the bad odds and succeed.

I'm hopeful that Cowboys, under the influence of their owner will underestimate Packers and that their approach to the game would be: "It is easy task!" Contrary to that, I believe Mike McCarthy will try to warn the team how dangerous are Packers in this season.

And I hope MM will not be successful.
