Packers Vs. Eagles - 3 Plays That Make You Go Hmmm

Jersey Al picks out three thought-provoking plays from the Packers' last game.

After re-watching the Packers game, here are three plays that made me go hmmm, for various reasons.

Let Love Rule - With Jordan Love being the hot topic du jour, I thought I would dedicate this "Three Plays..." to the man himself. However, since I never like to go with the obvious, you won't be seeing video of his touchdown pass here. Or any other of his completed passes, of which there were six in nine attempts. This might be reach just to be different, but I'm going to highlight the three incompletions. So here we go.

Aaron Jones - Everything about this play was perfect, except for Jones dropping the pass. After coming on at the 11:11 mark of the fourth period and throwing th TD pass to Watson to make it a one score game, Love got to sit on the bench for seven minutes. He got to watch the Eagles go on a nine-play, field goal scoring drive (eight runs) that killed roughly seven minutes of the fourth quarter. Way to go defense! Anyway, Love and the offense get the ball just before the two minute warning. He completes a quick 15 yard pass to Watson. At the two minute warning, Aaron Jones is split out wide and finds that infamous "turkey hole" between the cornerback and safety. Love takes the snap in shotgun, takes three short steps, sets his feet, stands in the pocket and gets the ball out quickly. It's a perfect pass, as Collingsworth said, and the normally sure-handed Jones just flubs it. It would have been a 20-yard completion. Love gets an A+ on this one.

Watson - After hitting Lazard for a 17-yard completion, the Packers have the ball on the Philly 21 yard line. Again, Love is in shotgun and gets himself set.  Christian Watson is split out wide left and is looking for him downfield but doesn't like what he sees. Meanwhile, the Eagles DL run a stunt with the left DE looping inside and bull-rushing Runyan back towards Love. Love feels the pressure and escapes the collapsing pocket. Looking downfield, he might have Lazard, but Allen turns upfield, perhaps wanting to draw the DB back with him thinking Love might decide to run.thinking Love was going to run. With Lazard not available, he spots Watson, who has used that 4.3 speed to streak across the end zone to make himself available to Love (great to see that from the rookie). Love sees a potential TD and throws it low, where hopefully only Watson could reach it, but it was just out of his reach. While Love's awareness and decision-making were spot on made a nice play, the pass didn't quite make it to Watson. Love gets a B- on this one.

Cobb - Two plays later, after a 6-yard completion to Robert Tonyan (who needs to just keep running after the catch and stop trying to put moves on people), the ball is on the Eagles 15 yard line. Love in shotgun again, sets himself and is looking left but two Eagles DL are bearing down on him. He finds an escape route between them and quickly spots Cobb breaking open just past the goal line. On the run, he lets it fly and it's a foot or two behind Cobb who is clearly interfered with, but there's no call. While not absolutely perfect, the pass was clearly catchable id Cobb wasn't hit before it arrived. For a pass made fully on the run, you can't expect much more. Love gets a B+ on this one.

Summary - For Love's first real action of the season, it was a short, but very good performance. The thing I liked the most was the confidence he showed out there, with no signs of nervousness or self-doubt. He set up nicely, felt pressure at the right time and got away, surveyed the field while on the run and threw some nice passes. It's definitely something positive for him to build on

Thanks, Al. Exactly that was what I saw. One pass (Watson) to far in front, not for much, but still to far. Second to Cob, little behind him, but still catchable. If there was not PI Cobb would catch it. Hell, even if the throw was on spot, Cobb wouldn't have a chance to catch it.

I think it's all offensive plays, but I agree with you.

Edit: Now that i think about it, any time our defense was on the field was offensive to my eyes.

I could not bear to re-watch those, so I took the safer route of skipping right to Love's entrance.

I'm glad for the plays Jersey Al chose to highlight, as they show that even in his incompletions Jordan Love flashed some ability.
Regarding his completion for a touchdown to Watson, a cool thing was that after faking a handoff, Love spun around to fire a precise pass in the middle of the field.
Especially with my ADHD, it was agonizing for me to watch the ineptitude of the Packers defense keep Love off the field for more opportunities to make a comeback against the Eagles.
Even so, Love's short but impressive appearance was at least enough to give us a good measure of hope that he might just be the guy at quarterback for the future.
Aren't we all rooting for Love to find a way?

Hopefully we all should be rooting for him. After what he's been through, it's time he gets the opportunity to show what he can do!

Captain and Tennille may have foreseen the future with their hit song, "Love Will Keep Us Together".

It can't be their other hit, "Muskrat Love", can it?

GPG, GLG!

Swisch, through my head passed one picture on that incomplete pass to Jones - a picture of the ACR face if that happened to him - perfect throw not catched by receiver. I saw clearly his long angy sight to Jones followed by rolling eyes to the sky. What Jordan did? He take the play call, transfer it to the team mates and execute next play.

I like to think Rodgers was a much more coachable player and agreeable teammate in his younger years.
I've never stopped hoping and praying that he would recapture the best of himself from the past and bring it into the present.

He was by all accounts, more humble and willing to learn. He transformed his whole mechanics between 2005 and 2009.

At least some promise here. I'd like to see him start the rest of the way, but it doesn't look like that will happen

AR said today that he plans on playing Sunday. It's a perfect time to overrule what he wants.

for who exactly to overrule? MLF? That's absolutely rich. I've seen this saga before, we can't be rescued by the strength of McCarthy and Ted Thompson. Mark Murphy has sealed our fate with his meddling with the football operations.

I think MLF might have been a pretty fair NFL coach if he hadn't surrendered his manhood to AR.

@Al - thanks for going above and beyond to take a different angle with this article - nice insight. I'm wondering though if you accidentally uploaded a pre-edit version or fired this off while hopping on the plane or something. CHTV is usually pretty good on the typo front so this article stuck out to me. And thanks again for uploading the vids w/ player!

3 good selections AL. It's still hard to watch the play to Cobb with no DPI called but this is what NFL officiating has become, a joke and an insult to the teams and the fans.

Still surprised that jones did not make the catch but it was good to see the perfect throw from Love.

We are very accustomed to watching Rodgers make perfect throws while on the run. That will improve for Love if the Packers just give him the chance to play. I hope that they start Love this week but we may not know until game time if they are trying some gamesmanship with the Bears during the week.
Thanks, Since '61

Please give yourself a pat on the back and a belly rub, Al. Lately, I've been longing for simpler CHTV times when the go-to banter was about TT passing on TJ Watt and Mike McCarthy's inability to push himself away from the buffet table. This was a creative and fun take. Thanks.

I was greatly heartened by Love's performance. The pass to Cobb would have been a big time throw since the window was tiny and Love was on the run. But it was not sufficiently accurate. The pass to Watson was also inaccurate, and was off by a couple of feet. I'd give the pass to Jones an A+, a "C" for the pass to Watson and a B- for the pass to Cobb in the end zone.

The pass to Cobb would easily have been caught had he not been interfered with. Cobb had a DB bearing down from the front too, so it was understandable Love left it a bit behind Cobb.

The pass to Watson in the endzone, Love was rolling right and throwing on the run.

My Dad always said, (God rest his soul) "Throw it where only your receiver can catch it..."

Love threw it out front where only Watson could get it. If Watson comes up with a miracle of a catch we're all good. I like he gave Watson a chance, if not a good one. I like that better than throwing it up 10 rows out the back of the endzone.

I agree with you, the pass to Jones in the hole-shot was absolutely beautiful. It looked to me it got on Jones quicker than he expected. He couldn't even get his hands together quick enough. (I'm also glad that wasn't Watson, because the Watson Hater Group would've moaned something fierce had he not gotten his hands together to catch a ball...)

I returned your email btw, but haven't heard back. We had a very nice Thanksgiving (My 61st Birthday) Burned Ribeyes, Cowboy Potatoes, and Green Beans with onion and bacon. I baked Pumpkin Spice Cookies, Pumpkin Bread, and 3 Pumpkin Pies, 2 Apple... 12 Ribeyes set me back a bit, but I only had to cook for about 20 minutes on my Birthday that way. Sister-in-Law did the Turkey/Ham the next day... ; )

Love threw it where no one could catch it, that's my point.

I would give Love overall an A- for his play. Lots of nice looking passes.

I got your email. I didn't have anything in particular to write in a reply, so.... I am just that way, sometimes!
