Packers vs. Browns: First Impressions

Here's my usual stream-of-consciousness, real-time musings on the Packers vs. Browns preseason game.

Here's my usual stream-of-consciousness, real-time musings on the Packers vs. Browns preseason game.

Not 5 seconds after I wrote on the CHTV live blog that it will interesting to see Barclay at center than two Browns player burst through the middle to sack Callahan for a safety. Um, yeah...

Found it pretty interesting Dean Lowry was up with the starters, played a lot and played very well. This is a kid that competes - could turn out to be the Packers' surprise of this draft.

Jason Spriggs was near flawless in pass protection (especially in the first half - may have tired a bit in the second half). His play seemed to match up with reports of him in camp. uses his athleticism well to recover if starting to get beat. Run blocking, as expected, will be iffy until he spends another year or two beefing up. Packers have their backup tackle if DBak or Bulaga go down.

Heavy, heavy use of the tight ends and running backs on the TD drive before the half. I think McCarthy is sending a message to other teams: Try to smother our receivers like you did last year and we will just use our other weapons to beat you.

How can Justin Perillo, the most unlikely looking football player, NOT make this team. He just doesn't drop ANYTHING that hits his hands.

Kentrell Brice got early work at safety and was very active. Flying to the ball and seemingly always in the play somehow. This kid bears watching.

The penalty on Lerentee McCray on the sack is just ridiculous. If that is now a penalty in the NFL, you might as well just outlaw sacks altogether.

Carl Bradford is fighting for his Packers life. He made a few plays tonight, but I think it will be a losing battle.

Datone Jones looks like a pass rushing specialist at OLB, which is bad news for Jayrone Elliott. Jones struggled holding the edge against the run, however.

I didn't see much of a DISTINCTION between John Crockett, Brandon Burks and Brandon Ross. Will be an interesting battle for that #3 RB spot.

Only one preseason game, but it's going to be an interesting battle between Callahan and Williams for a PS spot. Callahan looks a little steadier and in control of the offense, Williams is really raw but can sling it, escapes pressure well and may have more upside. I'm hitching my wagon to Williams - reminds me of Hundley.

Demetri Goodson? Time to end this experiment. As good as Joe Whitt is,not every conversion project can be a winner.

Two safeties in the same quarter? Has to be a Packers record, no?

And I'll leave you with this final thought:  A game without Jeff Janis is like a day without sunshine.

Go Pack Go!

Several players had a good game, its going to be tough at cut down. One more game and then we see who makes it to cut down. I so agree with Perillo never a guy that looks like a truck driver playing tight end. He catches everything that comes his way. I would say WR and TE should be very interesting that several positions are going to be tight.

In Burks GB has a guy that can turn the corner, at least against the 2nd or 3rd string. I believe that 1.52 ten yard dash time from Burks' pro day now. Crockett is just okay.

I thought Crockett was pretty good at being patient and finding the crease, seems pretty instinctive in getting it out of the backfield for the most part, but tonight, he just was missing the ability to get out of the trash at the second level.

Yeah, Burks has burst for sure.

Agree on Callahan. All the intangibles like awareness and escape ability, good arm, can run a bit without being confused with a gazelle. Williams looked interesting, but extremely raw. Just watching once, less arm than Callahan, better runner.

I was impressed/happy/surprised by Carl Bradford's performance tonight. Nothing ground breaking, but good all around play.

Lots of guys on D showing talent tonight.

Perillo is like a sherman tank with hands, he really does catch everything, and it was apparent even last year that Rodgers absolutely loves him. I would have liked to see some Richard Rodgers action, I knew he lost weight, but he looks like an entirely different body type now.

WR really will be a battle. One guy who definitely is not at risk of being the odd man out is Jarred Abbrederis. We can all kinda agree on that now, right? At least in the meantime?

What struck me about Spriggs' good first night was that it didn't look like he was doing anything. I mean that in the best possible way. He seemed so natural out there for the most part, it seemed like he was playing at practice speed... yet handling his business.

Micah Hyde.. Let's quit pretending he doesn't do anything, mmmmkay? Guy is a ball player.

Oh, and I was really, really encouraged by the way Callahan came in to tonight's game, settled in, and really gained confidence and poise culminating in the 2-minute drill. Just fun to watch.

Thoughts on Mortell? I had heard it wasn't really much of a competition so far in camp, but Mortell kinda turned on in the second half and i'd say we just might have a spirited punting competition if that type of play continues.

I agree! Masthay has been the main holder for Crosby. I think some reps are in store for Mortell to hold for Crosby to see how Crosby handles the new guy. If there is a change in Crosby's kicking, I'd say keep Masthay as Crosby is too important of a contributor to this team.

Perillo just gets open. Finds the soft spot and hangs there. He needs to be the 3rd TE.

All units of the D-line got pressure.

Run blocking wasn't the best.

My things have changed. I would be surprised if Crosby missed a 54 yarder.

No deep game yet.

Expected the 3rd and 4th QB's to make a lot of pre-snap penalties or bad exchanges, but both played fairly clean. Wasn't the train wreck I was expecting.

We'll start seeing the deep game when Rodgers and Hundley get under center.

MM is just trying to build confidence in the youngins'. I was actually surprised to see Marquise launch that deep shot early to Davis. I'm sorta of the mind that MM sent that play in because he wanted to try to make the defense respect the deep threat, which could in theory open up some lanes for Marquise to scramble through early on, which is part of his comfort level.

Mortell finished well, but his first punt was a line drive. Still give him a plus for the night. Masthay looked like Masthay. Need a boomer - not gonna happen.

Callahan ran for his life (and did it well - nice awareness and escape ability). Spriggs was good in pass pro, but the Interior and RT had troubles. Can't say much for the run blocking anywhere.

Only Abby's stock went up for the WRs. Plus, looks like a solid PR. Good hands, good decisions, perhaps could run north and south more. [ Edit: Oh, nice hands by Davis - good extension on ? a slant IIRC.]

Perillo looked very good. Cook looked like a stud. Backman had one nice but easy catch - free release and was ignored by the D. I will have to watch again, but TEs didn't look good run blocking.

Punt return and coverage units looked pretty bad. No Janis due to hand injury. Maybe he is a lock if this is what it looks like w/o him. First punt was nearly blocked, but the protection was better after that.

Bradford looked good at ILB. I'll have to eat crow if Bradford is cut since I loved the pick. I've got a chance - small, but his stock is up. Brown made a play and showed range. Thomas made some plays. Really, all the ILBs looked decent. McCray was up and down but he was active. Jones still can't play the run.

Lowry is a guy I thought could play early in the season as he can play the run and set the edge. Thought he'd be an upgrade over Boyd, maybe over Jones and Guion. No reason to think otherwise so far. That is nice because we have only one 5 tech on the roster.

Gunter in the slot a lot. Interesting.

Agree on nearly everything, Great. Jones has to do better setting the edge which has been a thorn at times for the Packer OLBs. I felt he played decent though, and seems to play better in rushing the QB from this position. Never been a fan of Bradford....at all. However, I have to admit he made some nice plays, but also looked lost on a couple.

I want to re-watch the game.

Well, I may be eating crow instead. Bradford really did have a nice game, barring one play. I also missed how well the 2nd and 3rd string O-line blocked in the 2nd half.

Things I will be watching going forward:
* Packers have some tough decisions to make at LB and O-line with depth and contracts in consideration.
* With Janis out, could they keep 24 on offensive and 26 on D to start the season? 6 OLBs appears probable currently, and they need to keep depth on d-line.
* Who replaces Janis as a gunner opposite Banjo?

The McCray penalty deserves special mention. It doesn't matter that he plays for GB - I'd feel the same way if we got the call.

The contact he made on (I believe McCown) in no way warranted a 15 yard PF. The refs need discretion on such plays. They're huge in the scope of keeping undeserving drives alive and who wins or losses.

I understand the NFL wants to keep the stars of the game upright, but they must amend the rules to allow the refs some judgment as to whether a PF occurred. No one size-fits-all crap. And that goes for incidental contact on the QB's helmet too. Hate that rule.

Instead of a great play by a defensive player, the offense gets rewarded. ABSURD.

And don't get me going about PI.

On McCray, the rule may be stupid, but players can't hit a QB who is in the pocket low - meaning below the knee. Not much doubt about it, but I think you don't like the rule and arenn't suggesting that the refs did not apply it correctly. I agree that the rule is dumb.

As for Goodson and the comment below, the penalty was obvious. The Cleveland player was way out of bounds. It wasn't much of a hit, but it was very late. I've defended Goodson's potential for quite a while, but it is getting more and more difficult to do so.

- It's amazing that we can actually have a two tight end set with the fear of passing.
- Jayrone Elliot has nothing to fear. He is still a top special teams. Esp before he got hurt last year.
- Saw some good stuff from Fackrell and Martinez. Esp when RG3 was on his back.
- Lacy looked like.......good Lacy
- Loved watching Rodgers mentoring Callahan
- Thought the breakdown of Bahktiari on Clay was informative. Also like that he is undefeated in one on ones. He is studying more.
- The Browns are brutal. Poor Josh mcfootball

I can't wait to go over the film. I was so excited for some Packer football that I couldn't focus on individuals. I was tuned into the game.

I do remember a few replays from:

Clark making a few nice plays.

Fackrell showing off his good technique and getting a sack.

Datone shooting off the line and making a sack.

((Forgot who blew up the O-Line on a run play)) and Joe Thomas cleaned up the RB.

I don't remember if Hyde was playing CB or Safety when he made that beautiful INT.

I am late to the Perillo bandwagon. Perfect role player. I wonder who run blocks better between Rodgers and Perillo.

Speaking of TEs, I remember that quick out route to Cook that gained a first down. YES!!!! No more quick outs to Rodgers!

Gotta give props when they're due. He showed up.

I'm one of the guys here that don't see much potential to Thomas' game, but if he can make a play or 2 like that more often I'll definitely welcome it. I'd like to see him make a play in the passing game. It doesn't necessarily have to be an INT.

I'm a fan of Thomas and would be very surprised if he doesn't make the 53. The guy came into camp on very good shape and looks much quicker than last year. He de-cleated that RB early in the game . I think the guy has been hampered by injury but I certainly think he can play. Bradford had a good game but I just don't see him making this team at ILB? Barrington & Ryan can thump. Martinez can cover. I'm rooting for Bradford but I think he has an uphill battle. Aside from a few big run plays & blown tackles, I think the defense looked quite good for PS#1 game. Glad no major injuries

Based on the number of safeties the Pack has kept on the roster in the recent past, Brice is almost guaranteed a spot barring a major screw-up. But he drew my eye the most of any new player during this game. Good reaction skills and seems to fly to the ball.

Perillo looks ugly and plays beautifully.

B Burks impressed me at RB

Before Goodson had his back-to-back boo-boos, I was thinking he was finally looking like an NFL CB

Josh Hawkins has quickness and speed

Datone Jones may have found a new home

Martinez did not impress me either way

Seems crazy to use Abby as return man regardless of ability unless you are OK with not having him as a WR (concussion seems inevitable)

QBs did as well as could be hoped

Lacy/Starks look ready to go

passing game still in low gear

No throws to Adams?

Monty/Cook will get bigger roles soon

WR Davis needs more targets before we can determine if he makes 53

No HR threat

new punter threw his hat in the ring

no injuries!

Next two ps games need to be more telling on both sides of the ball

I see it like you, Al! Nice review. I spoke of Kentrell Brice after he was signed, and anybody watching should have noticed he saved a touchdown by running down a back. He was consistently at or near the ball during this game. He is on the final roster barring injury or major screw-up IMO. (Note: I was also high on Pikula, for the PS at least, but he is now gone. My GM days are waning!).

Agree with comments about Jones, Spriggs, McCray, Perillo, Bradford, Lowery, & Goodson. I feel differently about Crockett & Callahan right now. Callahan's poise/competitiveness impressed me. Other players who drew my attention with nice contributions were Gilbert, Waters, and Hawkins. Wanted to see more out of Clark, but not bad either.

Two TE formations:

I offered this for consideration here a few weeks ago when there was a question about plays we would like to see. Gives the QB great optionality.

To make it work the TE's must catch well and block well. If you have two guys like this then that makes for (4) receivers and/or an extra big blocker on a LB for our RB.

Hard to defend if you have the personnel. Play action now works better and No 12 has (4) good receivers. Nightmare for defenses.

We will see a lot of this formation in 2016, if I am right.

Totally agree John, I'm right there with you and think we'll see 2 TE sets quite a bit this season. Rodgers looked better, slimmed down a bit, just seemed to moving a little better which is a positive no matter how much.

Lacy looked good too and so did Burks.

Hyde's INT was a beautiful pick. He may not be the fastest or the best but he's a Football Player. Still think one of TT better 5th rounders. Ever!

Mason Crosby is an Effing STUD!!! I was one of those who wanted his head in 2012. He's kicking those 54 yard FG'S right down the middle! Those are good from 65.

So, I'm looping the hell out of Nagler's Vine clip of Nick Perry (hey, Taryn, lol) rushing from over the Center and maaaaan, that pass rush personnel has potential. I don't like Datone playing inside 'cause he always seems to play patty cake once his initial burst doesn't get him past the blocker. Maybe Dom is still experimenting, but Perry rushing from that point is innnnnnteresting. Good luck Centers...

I realize this was just the first exhibition game and against the Browns at that but I felt that the Packers played pretty solid all evening. I thought Spriggs played very well for his first action. Clark not spectacular but solid. Fackrell looked good in his limited action as well. I think Perillo and Abby made solid cases for making the 53 during this game. I may be mistaken but I didn't see much of Janis in this game. I also thought Bradford played well tonight. It would be a great boost for the ILB position group if he can be consistent with his play. Brice also gave himself a shot for a safety position. Overall a solid team performance and from what I could tell no one was injured. Let's keep it that way. Thanks, Since '61

1. Callahan reminded mwe of Flynn. Thats the problem what did Flynn really do in his career. 2. I think the game plan lacy left lacy right then throw will be mental mikes forte. Fine until you start letting the other teams make 50 yard pass plays. Get behind stay behind football. 3. Eliot looked good, Fakrell could replace Ryan. Lack of team speed on the outside. T Davis is a string bean waiting to be bent. 4. Cobb and a few others got the game off. Why? They took last season off.

Because...
1. ...key, experienced veterans...
2. ...well, Jordy Nelson 2015?

Just got back from Vacation and just watched the Packers game.

My initial thoughts.

Both rookie QBs could be worth developing on the PS.

I thought overall Martinez, Thomas and Bradford all looked good at ILB. Really good battle there.

OLB maybe the deepest it's been since Capers came to GB.

WR competition is going to be fun to watch. I thought Davis made some nice plays.

Punting competition just got a lot bigger. I thought Mortel did really well.

Brandon Burks has a chance for the #3 RB job. I like what I saw out of him.

Kentrell Brice really looked good. He flew around and seemingly was in on every play.

First preseason game in the books. I can't wait to see more of these young players battle it out.

Also just watched the game and ditto everything you said. I would add, Barclay was up and down as center and Walker was disappointing. Goodson seemed to be the guy that probably did the most self-inflicting damage in making the team.

The one aspect that surprised me was Burk's blocking. At this point....I would see him ahead of Crockett. Getting tripped up from behind by a DT probably won't play well in the film room.

I didn't watch the OL much the first time I watched. I keyed in on Spriggs a few times and thought he looked good overall.

The thing that Burks brings is speed. He had the ability to get to the outside. He is a guy to keep watching.

I don't know where else to put this, so here goes...

Are we going to talk about Abby potentially fighting for the #3 WR spot or not?

Abbrederis will have a big role in the offense. But I don't think it's going to be as simple as saying he will be the #3. I think we are going to see a lot more variety of players this year.
I think we will see a lot of Adams, Abbrederis, Montgomery to create a lot of different looks. Also add in more that it looks like they will use more 2 TE sets also.

I don't think it's really as important who the #3 is, but I think it's more important in how McCarthy decides to use everyone he has available. Keeping the offense balanced and versatile I think will be the key to the offense. As the season goes on a true number 3 will likely emerge. But to start the season I think we will see a lot of players used.

I agree RC. Mix it up. No need to worry about pecking order after Jordy.

Yeah, honestly after Nelson and Cobb its not a huge deal who is next in line.
The versatility of the offense I think will be the biggest thing for the offense this year. They have all the weapons to attack the entire field this year.

One of the biggest improvements the team made was getting Cook. They have 2 actual TE's that can play. That will be a huge difference from a year ago. Having the ability to go 2 TE's will really force teams to play them differently.

Can someone give me a rational explanation why Don Barclay continues to waste a roster spot? For gods sake, dump his fat useless ass TT.
