Packers Vs. Bears - 3 Plays That Make You Go Hmmm

Jersey Al picks out three thought-provoking plays from the Packers' last game.

After re-watching the Packers game, here are three plays that made me go hmmm, for various reasons. In general, I try to focus on the less obvious or things I didn't notice watching live.

Slaton Swimming - I just want to show a little love to an unsung hero on the defensive line. Kenny Clark and DeVonte Wyatt shone on the stat sheet, but TJ Slaton played the most snaps on the DL and simply did his job the entire game. The Packers obviously trust him to do so, but he's not just a space eater. He's got a burst, and he's got some moves. On Sunday, he had a QB hurry and knocked down a pass. In this video, you see Slaton execute a perfect swim move to get into the backfield and tackle the runner for a one yard gain. I'm not beholden to PFF, but they did have Slaton rated as their best Packers DL on Sunday and after re-watching the game, I must agree. If he can keep up this level of play, Wyatt and Clark will continue to be the beneficiaries of more opportunities to impact the game.

Musgrave Sprinting - I love me some bunch formations and this was a beautifully designed play with the key being one of the bunch receivers running at the safeties. Simple stuff that the Packers never did enough of for my liking. I remember getting jealous watching other teams bunch formation the Packers D to death. Well, maybe things will be different with the Packers' offense this year (cough... motion... cough).  Anyway, what's interesting about this play was who the Packers selected to run the deep route to occupy the safeties. Normally this would have been Christian Watson, but with him out, the Packers chose... a tight end? Ah yes, Musgrave is probably faster than the other available Packers receivers and you can see him flying downfield to clear space underneath for Samari Toure. Now, Musgrave needs work on running more precise routes, as we saw a few times in this game, but I can't help but be excited about the impact he'll have when he does.

Defense Flying - A defense that is consistently swarming  to the ball has always been high on my Packers wish list. The last couple of years, we've been promised this from the Packers' defensive coordinator. We've even seen it for the first game or two, and then it would slowly slip away as the season progressed. So here we are again. As the clip below shows, the Packers are coming from all areas of the field to pursue the ball carrier. It's a simple toss play, and the Packers end up with four players on the ball carrier and another four charging into the picture as support. Watch Preston Smith double back to get into the play. Watch the DL on the other side of the line hustling towards the ball. It's a beautiful thing, but will it last? Stay tuned...

The Van Ness sack was the play that made me go hmmm. His acceleration was insane.

Hollins brings some speed on the outside, too.

I thought he baited him on a couple of previous plays, trying to see if he could persuade Fields to go wide, and when he did, Van Ness totally pounced. That wasn't just a sack, that was a hard tackle.

It also made me go hmmm because, for the life of me, I have no idea what the Bears were trying to do on that play.

Looks like “Hmmm” is the new “Hell yeah!”

Thanks Al for the 3-feature. On #2, it looks like Musgrave was about to break open. If JL pumpfakes to Toure and the safety pulls in (likely the way it looks), it's 6 for the TE. Rather than clearing out, the size and speed mismatch vs. a safety will make him the primary someday. This will be coming soon.

Always love these, Al. As one of the more ignorant fans on this site I learn a lot about the "unnoticed" stuff going on during the plays from these breakdowns. I think this year you'll have a hard time picking the best "hmmm" plays to show!

I agree with you. Slaton was the rock on which Chicago foundered. If he keeps that up, he’s going to be incredibly valuable.

I need to give a shout out to Tom. I accept that the Bears’ pass rush was anemic, but his work in the the run game was head and shoulders above anyone else. Sadly, I can’t help thinking how much better we might be with him at C doing that and Walker or Nijman (who is very good in the run game) at RT.

Finally, I think I have to concede that Savage had an excellent game. As to Ford, well I’d just start AJJ and take similar lumps but with the hope of improving.

Slaton is turning into a beast on the DL. Slaton, Kenny and Wyatt to go with Brooks and Wooden in the rotation is very productive. I read they stunted on half of their pass rushes. The front generated hurries on over 30 pass snaps defended.

Tom is sublime as a blocker. Pass blocking is very good, his run blocking is better. He completely sealed off run lanes off tackle. Imagine his run blocking in the middle with Jenks and JRJ (who looked good run blocking Sunday). I believe they would gain so much more by moving him and bringing in Walker or Nijman at T.

Who was that #26? Ford should focus on STs. AJJ has been coming on...let him play.

Savage was pretty good with the play in front of him on Sunday. I think that's always been his strength. Chicago is a team that's going to give that to the safeties (chances to play downhill/run and hit)...I think for Atlanta that will be mostly true too.

On the defense, right now Barry has to be feeling a lot of heat to get his unit playing better. So he is doing all the right things right now. But if the team is winning more games, will Barry go back to his instincts? As we all know, that would mean giving up easy first downs rather than possibly giving up a big play. But that kind of scheme seems to be demoralizing to the defense, as they fight hard to get the opponent to third and four, only to have the DB's give a seven to ten yard cushion for an easy pitch and catch, and a new set of downs. LaFleur is going to have to keep a sharp eye on how the defense plays, and demand results and accountability.

Yes, but the all-important stat analysis continues.

The game I watched....the Packers won pretty easily. They led the whole way, they scored a couple of quick TDs in the 3rd quarter that broke open a 10-6 game. The offense scored 30, and the defense another 7. We scored on our first possession.

There's the forest, there's the trees, and there's the leaves on the trees.

I agree this was a good start but there are still things to work on.

Atlanta is a better running TEAM than Chicago, who gets their lofty run stats from their QB on both designed and improvised run plays. Atlanta will challenge the Packers' front 7 with better blocking and better protection for Ridder. A guy like Fields impacts the whole defense. Ridder is mobile but nowhere close to the runner Fields is...and Ridder is really just a game manager.

From what I saw Wyatt had an 82 grade and Slaton a 67. His hand fighting was much better than his 1st two years, I'll be watching him closer when they play a good interior OL. Maybe the Lions?

BTW PFF gave Fields a 60.9 grade and Love a 60.8. It might not be totally worthless but their trying hard to get there in a hurry.

Sorry, I was referring to run defense grading but didn't make that clear. If you're going by completion percentage, Fields had a better game, even though they were short, safe throws. Lot's of flaws in PFF algorithms. Been paying attention to them less and less.

This is what it looked like to me:

I think we broke their spirit. Week One. On their home field. I'm grateful to have lived long enough to have seen this happen. I would have thought that when we beat them in 2010 it would have broken them, but apparently they needed a reminder.
