Packers Snap Counts Versus Detroit: Week Eighteen

The Packers rest their starters while losing a meaningless game to the Detroit Lions.

The Packers activated Jaire Alexander off the Covid List and activated JJ Molson and LB Ray Wilborn off the Practice Squad Covid List.  Earlier last week the team activated Kingsley Keke, Dennis Kelly, Amari Rodgers, and Darnell Savage from the Covid List.  The Packers placed Billy Turner on the Covid List where he remains for the time being.  David Moore was placed on the Practice Squad Covid List, where he remains.

They elevated Abdullah Anderson and LB LaDarius Hamilton to the active roster for the game against the Lions.  The Packers also activated Center Josh Myers from Injured reserve and added him along with Tackle David Bakhtiari to the 48-man active roster.

Jaire Alexander (Shoulder/Covid), DeVondre Campbell (Elbow), Aaron Jones (knee), and Kingsley Keke (Illness) were inactive, along with Safety Shawn David, Center Jake Hanson, and Defensive Lineman Jack Heflin, who were all healthy scratches.

The Packers' running backs rushed the ball just 9 times in the first half for 36 yards, a 4.0-yard average.  Dillon received 8 carries and gained 32 yards (long of 8) and Patrick Taylor carried the ball once for 6 yards.  Dillon carried the ball 6 times in the second half for 31 yards and Taylor gained 47 yards on 10 carries in the second half with a long of 12.  The Packers ran the ball reasonably well in the first half and better in the second half.

David Bakhtiari played "pretty well" according to Pro Football Focus.  He did not allow a pressure and lost just one of his 20 pass protection repetitions.  PFF assigned a quarterback hit to Nijman, Newman, and Myers, with Nijman also allowing a pressure.  Dennis Kelly allowed a sack, as did Marcedes Lewis when he had to block Julian Okwara one-on-one.  Lucas Patrick moved to right guard while Myers was playing center and then moved back to center when Myers exited the game.  Both Myers and Bakhtiari were apparently on snap counts after coming back from injuries.  After the game, Head Coach LaFleur cited fatigue for Bakhtiari's exit from the game.

Aaron Rodgers completed 14 of 18 pass attempts for 138 yards and 2 touchdowns.  His passer rating was 135.6.  He was sacked 3 times.  Rodgers seemed to have all day to throw a few times but could not find an open receiver.  He had the benefit of having Davante Adams on the field for 22 snaps.  Allen Lazard had a big day with 75 receiving yards on 5 receptions (6 targets), 2 of which were for touchdowns in just 21 snaps.  Still, the Packers were down 17 to 13 at the half.  Jordan Love played the second half.  He completed 10 passes on 17 attempts for 131 yards, 1 touchdown (to Deguara for 62 yards) and 2 interceptions.  One interception was tipped by a defender and then tipped up by Amari Rodgers into the hands of Detroit's C.J. Moore.  Another interception was thrown while under pressure and down 7 points with 36 seconds left in the game.  Amari Rodgers also fumbled in the second half, giving Detroit 3 second-half turnovers.  Love finished with a passer rating of 64.  His receivers could have made his day much better had they made some nice plays on some passes that fell incomplete.

Detroit rushed 11 times and gained 21 yards (2.3 yard average) in the first half.  DeAndre Swift had a long of 11, while Jamaal Williams and Craig Reynolds each had a long of 6.  On the other 6 carries, Detroit lost 2 yards net.  Goff completed 14 of 17 passes for 131 yards and a touchdown.  His passer rating was 118.4.  WR Tom Kennedy also threw a 75-yard touchdown on a trick play.

Detroit's running backs gained 79 yards on 16 carries in the second half, good for a 4.9 yard average.  They included runs of 9, 12, 13 and 14 yards.  Goff completed just 4 of 16 passes in the second half, but they went for 106 yards even though he completed just one pass that traveled more than 15 yards in the air.

Rashan Gary generated 4 pressures and had a 29.4% pass rush win rate in his shortened day.  Preston Smith was the only other Packer to generate multiple pressures (2).  Dean Lowry, Preston Smith, LaDarius Hamilton, and Kenny Clark each had one quarterback hit, with Lowry's being the sole sack on the day.  Lowry added 2 tackles for loss.  Barnes had 7 tackles (5 solo) while Garvin added 6 tackles (5 solo).

Mason Crosby missed an extra point.  At least to me, the snap, hold and leg swing all looked smooth.  The kick was straight, but pushed right.  Amari Rodgers had a 23-yard punt return, though it was on a 67-yard punt so the net was still 44 yards.

The most critical number from the game will be the number of weeks MVS has to sit out with his back injury

Who?

With Cobby back, MVS isn't gonna see many snaps going forward.

He has had an entire season to show he deserves them and IMO he doesn't. Maybe 5-10 per game to run a sprint.

I was choosing a hill?

I was making a comment.

Lazard has been head and shoulders better than MVS at his best.

Cobb will be back.

Lazard will get the majority of the WR2 snaps and Cobb will get his share of package snaps.

MVS will be an afterthought.

So it is written, so it shall be...

If anyone re-watches the game, I would be interested in whether Kenny Clark played just in the first half or if his snaps were interspersed throughout the game. I am assuming he played just in the first half. If so, what do the Packers allowed per carry with Clark in the game versus when he is out? I suspect the difference is a big number, relatively speaking.

A lot of Detroit's yards came on explosive plays. Goff yards were more than half composed of yards after the catch. I always try to give credit to Amos for limiting gains when he is in there, and perhaps they missed Campbell as well. I can think of one big play during which Black put a hard hit on the receiver, who did not go down. Since Black had failed to wrap up, he watched that receiver run downfield.

Another game with just 4 offensive linemen playing on field goals and extra points. It used to be 5 plus the long snapper. So instead of having essentially 6 OL on the field for these plays, the Packers are using 5, so someone else is now on the edge. I don't know who that is.

I am not too worried about the offense. The run game was not as crisp in the first half - don't know if that is rust. I do think Nijman has really been getting after guys in the run game - quite impressed with the way he looks for work. The Pack did average better in the second half with the guys who have been playing most of the year.

Lowry was active, but I really did not notice whether he was consistent. Far too many big runs and big (and trick) pass plays given up.

Clark was pulled. He didn't play in the second half (I don't think he finished the first half).

No love for Vernon Scott. When all the scrubs played, he made it so you need to put an asterisk next to "all". Same for Braden and McDuffie (even though McDuffie was listed as the starter on the Fox starting lineups)...but for a position as thin as S seems to be, surprised Scott got no snaps. How big is THAT doghouse?

"... Kenny Clark played just in the first half or if his snaps were interspersed throughout the game."

He was on the field on the one series at the end of the game, I believe, after first INT.

Yes, I saw him and I was surprised. I believe they try to stop Lions after 1st interception. I saw 97 there, in the backfield. I rewatched the game in 40 minutes on game pass and did not have time to establish how many snaps he was in the game. But I surely was surprised.

Tex Winters seems to think Clark was in a rotation and played through the third quarter.

I guess I can't do the yds/carry allowed with and without Clark comparison. That said, the runs were either very successful or pretty ineffective. A set of gashes and then minimal gains. That's not that unusual but it was not the case where they got consistent nice 4- and 5-yard gains. it was 12, 13, 14 yard gains.

We really don’t have a plan B at linebacker. I expected to see Yiadom on D and that the result would be bad. The play of Burks was equally excruciating. With both playing 25 snaps on STs, that’s the risk of specialists who can’t otherwise cut it. The difference is that Burks appears to be next man up at ILB. As TGR pointed out, similar lack of depth at S if one goes down. Fortunately it looks like Z will be available to bolster OLB. Looks like King was also on a snap count.

Campbell is critical to us, at least that is what I think this game confirmed most saliently on D. Winfree’s fumble was frustrating not only for the short field turnover, but because he seems to be the only back up able to get open, something EQ just doesn’t seem to manage consistently. I hope Moore is our returner and incorporated into the offensive options. It’s pretty clear AmRod shouldn’t see the field this year.

I hope MVS is healthy by the next game. We really need him to be making defenses guard against the deep ball. I am also concerned about Sullivan. We may have corner depth, but we have none at safety. We need centerfield secondary options that can play in the passing game.

Yup to all of your comment.

As I wrote elsewhere:

Why does Cooper Kupp have so much production but I see no special talent?

Why do I see so much talent in ESB but such moderate production?

Three things: Kupp is wicked smart, Kupp is an outstanding technician, Kupp has great vision (and decent short area quickness)...he's a lot like Jordy Nelson in those regards, but Kupp plays out of the slot more.

Cant beat that answer. EQ just seems to be a guy who can’t quite get it right mentally despite looking great when he does get the ball. Too often his routes fall away and he seems to struggle to find open spaces in broken play. All tease no please.

I think you are generous with "moderate production" for ESB. How ESB can have more snaps than any other WR and yet catch less is a mystery. ESB does block pretty well, but a WR has to get open and catch balls too.

The Packers sorely missed Campbell. The short middle of the field was wide open all game for Detroit. Why Barnes/Burks/McDuffie et al can't cover in the middle of the field is another mystery, but Campbell proved by his absence that he is the defensive MVP for the Packers this year.

I hope Gute finally recognizes the importance of the ILB position and drafts some help for Campbell.

Lastly, thanks TGR for all of your hard work. This is one of my favorite weekly columns and I always learn something new about the Packers from it. Appreciate the effort!

Got to remember that the Packers played dime with the hybrid/SS replacing ILB on the weakside. Campbell is playing that position replacing the hybrid/SS in Barry's modified Pettine scheme. In each case, the Packers do not a replacement for Campbell. The team drafted Burks to play that position, but outside the Thanksgiving game in 2018, he has not 'flashed' at all.

I didn't want to offend any ESB lovers out there! I just wanted to make my point. At any rate, he was a 6th round pick who has played a fair amount over the last 4 years. As such, I would rate him as a successful draft pick, though obviously not a home run.

I was obviously watching LAR-SF game. Cooper Kupp had a 31" vertical and ran a 4.62 forty at the combine, though he did have a 6.75 3 cone. He had a 6.53 3 cone at his pro day and his forty didn't get better at the pro day with a 4.61 time and his effort with the vertical also went down at just 29 inches - heck, linemen start doing 28 inches!. And the guy is putting up Megatron numbers!

Davante’s 40 is only marginally faster. I think the lesson is that an agile player with really good field awareness and route technique can get open regularly and often. If he can catch and get targeted a lot and accurately.

As long as other teams alter their coverage to guard against his potential to get behind them, he is important to us regardless of targets and yards. I think he’s also been carrying a knock the last few weeks.

I sign your post. I remember that, when Amon Ra St Brown catch one ball Black bump in him, grab his legs and let him run another 6-7 yards downfield, I said to myself: "I rather play with 10 players on D, than have him in the game!" Same thoughts I have for Yiadom, as well as for Burks. I believe Summers is not good, but he is much better than Burks.

Same thing with ESB. That long pass from Jordan Love (I rechecked 3 times) was perfectly thrown ball. ESB was running down field than slowed down trying to locate the ball, Lions defender jump up and tried to bat the ball and ESB jumped with him. ESB slightly touch the bal with top of his fingers. If he continues to run without slowing down and jumping ball would perfrctly fall in his armpit. I would like to know what was the play call for that snap.

Rewatched the game on all-22. Not much to add to dobber's or Coldworld's comments about the game. I was highly amused by Lafleur's game after presser. Blaming the players for a defensive game plan that left large voids in the soft 5-10 yards beyond the LOS is utter BS. Barry or Gray might have wanted to play an extra DB in a dime package, but Lafleur vetoed that even before they started planning for this game. Otherwise, we would have King as the dime on the slot, instead of Burks. (With King's injury history, it makes sense to put King on a pitch count prior to the playoffs) Lafleur has thrown Barry under the Bus three times (by my count) this season for decisions Lafleur as HC has made. Yes, Barry is a second tier DC. But he has done a good job given the mess Lafleur made in the wake of Mike Pettine leaving. Don't think the Gute has forgotten this for one second. It should be interesting to see who the new DC and ST will be next year. Health: How much, and how long any of the returning players from IR play is unknown. Being in shape, and being in 'football shape' are two very different things. Bahk only lasted 25 snaps, and he has been in Green Bay doing his work since his injury. Z. Smith had back surgery and how much work he has done is unknown to us fans. And while Alexander has been doing field work, and may be in the best 'football shape', he is dealing with a shoulder injury that imply some level of nerve damage. To put it bluntly, can he take a hit. How they, and Cobb impact the team going into the playoffs is unknown. MVS might be a huge loss if he cannot play. As others have noted, as the Packer's No.2 WR, he stresses a secondary in ways no one in the else can do. (Just look at how long Rodger's was holding the ball on his 5-7 drop backs. Those were deep shots he wanted to take, but the WR was covered in the Lions secondary with bracket cover. MVS is the only WR with the ability to break cover 2, and slide coverage off Adams. He is that important)

Packers really should find a good back up QB before the playoffs. Love is terrible. Was a projected 3rd to 5th round draft choice they traded up for when they needed one of the great receivers that were available at that pick.

PFF Top 5:
Adams: 88.9; Lazard 88.7; AR 80.3; P. Taylor 77.2; Deguara 76.2, Bakh
Galeai 92; Gary 90.4; Preston 83.8; Garvin 74.3; King 74.1

PFF Bottom 5:
Love 39.4; Newman 43.5; MVS 45.9; Myers 48.1; Davis 48.4.
Barnes 32.8; Slaton 35.4; Sullivan 40.7; Yiadom 41.7; Burks 45.3

Patrick Taylor earned terrific pass blocking grades on 8 such snaps. Gained 40 yards after contact on 53 rushing yards. No mention of Dillon, but it must have been pretty good though less than 76.

Newman had the worst run blocking grade and allowed a couple of pressures. Myers was the 2nd worst run blocker and allowed 2 pressures. PFF thought the potential TD from Love to Davis was a drop by the TE. That is a close call. It would have been a good catch had Tyler Davis come down with that pass, but one that could have been made. Seems harsh to me but receivers need to help their QBs.

Barnes: missed 2 tackles and allowed 5 of 5 passes for 52 into his coverage.
Slaton: worst run defense grade on the team.
Packers missed 11 tackles, same as two weeks ago.

AR was under pressure 40% of the time 9/22. Love 27.8%, 5 of 18. I have no data, but it seems like 25% to 33% pressure rates on QBs is about normal, but I am just going off memory and just when I find this (subjective) stat posted.
