Packers Sign Rookie Tight End, Roster At 90-Man Limit

The Green Bay Packers signed rookie tight end Brandon Bostick of Newberry College on Wednesday.

The Green Bay Packers signed rookie free agent Brandon Bostick on Tuesday, general manager Ted Thompson announced.

Fans might recognized the name as a player that participated in the team's rookie orientation camp on a tryout basis in early May.

Bostick will wear No. 48.

Room was made for Bostick on the roster when the Packers released quarterback Nick Hill and fellow tight end Cameron Ford last week.

The Packers also signed free agent defensive lineman Phillip Merling last week. The additions of Merling and Bostick bring the roster size up to 90 players, which is the limit allowed by the NFL.

One implication is that there's currently no room for a free agent such as running back Ryan Grant, however, the Packers could make a move at any time to create time if need be.

Bostick joins a crowded group at tight end that includes Jermichael Finley, Tom Crabtree, D.J. Williams, Ryan Taylor and Eric Lair.

Andrew Quarless is also in the mix at tight end but ended last season on injured reserve after suffering a serious knee injury and has yet to practice this offseason. It's unlikely he'll even by ready by training camp and could begin the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list or injured reserve.

Bostick, 6-foot-3, 245-pounds, finished his career at Newberry (S.C.) College ranked No. 4 in receptions (136), No. 3 in receiving yards (1,935) and No. 2 in receiving touchdowns (19). He earned second-team All-South Atlantic Conference honors at wide receiver in 2011 after catching 35 passes for 439 yards (12.5 avg.) and seven TDs. As a junior in 2010, Bostick registered 48 receptions for 839 yards (17.5 avg.) and eight TDs, highlighted by 11 catches for a school- and conference-record 322 yards (29.3 avg.) and three TDs at Tusculum.
