Packers sign Jaire Alexander to four year extension

The deal makes Alexander the highest paid cornerback in the league.

From Schefter

The Packers started talks with Alexander back during the Combine with an eye toward getting a deal done this offseason.

Alexander was slated to count $13.29M against the cap, a number that will undoubtedly decrease significantly with this new deal.

A first-round pick in 2018, Alexander earned Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro honors in 2020. He was out for much of the 2021 season with a shoulder injury and played in only five games. The cornerback was Brian Gutekunst's first selection as Packers general manager.

UPDATE: Over The Cap has a full breakdown of the contract here. His cap number does indeed go down from $13.29 million to just over $7 million.

I know GB needed the CAP relief to do more. Really wish he was healed and working like an All Pro before handing him the cookie jar.
GB pays their ALL Pros. Not bad for younger guys to work towards. Hope he is the shutdown CB he was in 2020.

If it were a lower body injury, i might be concerned, but it was a shoulder and he was close to 100% in the playoff game. He should be fine this year.

So I'm guessing there will be option/bonus structure here that will keep the overall cap hit low for a year or two and create opportunities to redo the deal as it goes along to create additional cap space. If there's $30M of true signing bonus and no void years, his 2022 cap hit can't come down by much more than about $5M.

Now the question becomes: with a little breathing room, have the Packers been waiting to make other moves or do they stand pat for awhile?

Yeah he's getting vet minimum for a salary this year and an $11.5 roster bonus next year that will have to be restructured. He could count $30 million against the cap by the 4th and 5th year of the deal so something will have to give after year 3 unless the cap has gone up ridiculously by then. With the gambling money if just might.

It would be nice to add a decent veteran tight end or WR, but I don't know what's available and at what price. I'm liking this team and I'm really excited about their draft picks.

Good question. Pack just became 4th in available cap space.( 16.7) I say keep the money in cap bank in case of injury or acquiring a very good player to fill a faltering need. Besides being deep in many positions with a mixture of veterans and rookies, we now have a lg cap chest. Let me get my shades.

There is no name player out there at the moment that screams “must have”. No reason to make any moves for a while. We do not need more old and injured former big names and if we do sign someone it needs to be value. That money can go for injury amelioration, as you say, or to rework other players. We need to address Gary and Savage, perhaps Amos and Nijman at some point.

Good. Alexander and Stokes as our corners for the next four years. Add in guys like Wyatt, Walker, Clark, Campbell, Savage, Gary....we've got a very good group of core defenders for the next several years.

I like Alexander, and he can cover, but he needs to stay on the field. We lost him for most of the season because he tried to blow up a bigger, stronger RB and he broke himself. Next time, wrap him up and wait for help. He's too valuable as a cover guy to lose like that.

Agree with everything except Clark. After restructing his deal, he's set to count $20 million against the cap next year. Theres no way theyre going to pay that much for a DT with a combined 10 sacks over the last 3 years especially when they just gave Jaire a huge extension and will have to give Jenkins and Gary huge extensions over the next year as well. I'm a big fan of Clark, but it looks like Wyatt was drafted to be his future replacement rather than his running mate.

I hope not. Clark is in his prime, and is one of the best. He'd be a priority keeper in my book. If they can play the salary cap game for 2 years and extend Clark, Rashan and Jenkins, we'll get some relief when Rodgers retires. That gives Rodgers a very good team and 2 more shots at a Super Bowl.

Clark plays at nose sometimes but they move him around. He isnt a true nose. Also, considering they play nickel with only 2 down linemen like 80% of the time, that means they rarely even have a nose on the field.

That would add another $23 Million ($35,816,551 in dead cap) if he was cut as you suggested. Bakhtiari costs about $13.5 million to play for the Packers in 2022 and over $35 million NOT to play for them...

Now I'm no cap guru but that doesn't seem like a very good idea.

Hey, if they can make it work salary cap-wise, I'm all for it. Dont take the words in my OP like i want Clark gone. The opposite is true. I'm a huge fan of his and this defense is substantially better with him than without. But making the hard decision and letting good players walk a year or two early is the way this team has operated for many years. Like Ron Wolf famously said, "I'll pay you till I can replace you."

We'll also have Rasul Douglas for a few years too... Expecting Gutey to keep churning the bottom end of the roster, as he does, and while optimism runs rampant this time of year, I feel our defense might be as good as any I can remember. (At least as good as any in the last three decades if they come together, gel, and play as a team.)

Should be an exciting year.

With Jaire signed and healthy and the addition of what looks to me to be an excellent draft, and the re-signings we've done, I think only bad luck with injuries is all that will stop this team from being very, very good. Finally, a defense and maybe even respectable special teams play is on the horizon.

Will the receiver mania ever end? They currently have 7 receivers under contract when they traditionally only carry 6 on the active roster. Here's Rodgers' numbers in his last 7 games without Adams: 19 tds vs only 1 int and they won all 7, 4 of which were against playoff teams. They have more than enough receivers to have another great offense.

My view is a veteran WR would now be a luxury.

The WR room is suddenly crowded with a good mix of vets and rookies/young prospects: Watkins, Watson, Lazard, Cobb, Rodgers, Doubs, Toure, Taylor, Winfree and a few other prospects.

I expect they will keep 6 on the 53...maybe 7 if a guy like Toure shows he can be a ST stalwart on kick and cover teams.

At best, look for WR veteran value on cut down days, but I would be looking to bolster Edge and S now.

All I can say is WOW! I am glad they got this done early. Good for Alexander.

Something has changed with Gute and the team from TT. This would never have happened. Maybe the thing with Rodgers shook up the team. They lost Adans and could have lost Alexander. Getting excited for the season and all the other moves that Gute will do.

I don't think that Gute has to sign a vet WR yet. There is plenty of time. They missed out on OBJ last year and that left a hole for the playoffs.

Cobb in 12 games 28/375/5 13 yds per Rec

This isn't a change from TT. See the multiple extensions that ajhawk signed. See nperry extension.
What BG did was protect and resign one of his first round picks.
The difference is that BG made a better pick on draft night.
Therefore, an extension makes sense. tt seemed to double down on questionable choices on draft night.
Either way, I love the direction this defense and this team are heading. GPG!

Sammy Watkins is a veteran WR. He will be used much more, this coming season, than we would have used OBJ, with his injury status and maybe even Julio Jones and his ability to stay on the field. I like the Watkins signing, It did not break the bank and gave Rodgers a good target to throw to. The hard part for Rodgers will be in choosing which target to throw to. I cannot wait to see this offense hum!

There is no doubt he deserved to be paid. But is he a top 5 CB? In 2021 the top 5 cbs made between 16 and 20 mil. So the figures are in line if he is. We've had Charles Woodson, Butler, and other greats. If he doesn't make that list. The money being given is premature. The flip; is the renegotiations of every contract signed now. He maybe the first to get that much Bonus Money. Is he worth it? IMO. It's too much. And there is NO doubt, Gutey will renegotiate this signing down the road.

Ward got more than twice the guaranteed money that Alexander did. His salary is actually $19.46 million AAV over 5 years so he's still getting less than Ramsey. The $21 million is agent speak.

Not really a fair statement, but it has some elements of truth. Ward's guarantee is better but it isn't twice Jaire's in any meaningful sense. And the agent speak is accurate and is the most commonly used frame of reference.

Ward's deal is for six years. Agent frame of reference is $20.1M per year. Actual cash if Ward plays out the deal is $19.096 million per year. Jaire's actual cash if he plays out his five year deal is $19.615M per year, and his agent speak is $21M per year.

Ramsey's deal is worth $18.95 million per year if he plays it out.

For some reason I thought Ramsey's deal was new not an extension so I thought it was a straight up 5 years $100 million.

For Ward I was talking actual guarantees. I know Alexander's roster bonus might as well be guaranteed or really the 1st three years and roughly $61 million. It will be interesting if they move any of his salary next year to the signing bonus along with the roster bonus, that would push the last two years close to $30 million cap hits. I guess the top CBs could be getting $25 million/yr by then so maybe that isn't terrible.

Every contract is a speculation. They're not paying for what he was in his previous deal, they're paying him for what they anticipate him being over the next 4 years.

"And there is NO doubt, Gutey will renegotiate this signing down the road."

Well of course he will. That's how most longer-term contracts are structured now.

I think he has definitely shown that he is a top 5 CB. If they hadn't resigned him now they would potentially have risked another Devante Adams scenario down the road. The money seems high, but it's the going rate for top CB's and the salary cap is positioned to explode over the next few years. I think it was the right move and the front office should be applauded for getting it done.

This is a great and necessary move. Alexander is our first shut down corner since Herb Adderley and if he returns at 100% and continues his excellent level of play he could join Adderley in the NFL HOF. Hopefully he will play his entire career with the Packers.

Our CB position is now set for the next 3-4 seasons. DL is improved, ILBs improved, our defense is looking good. They can take us a long way if they remain relatively healthy. Thanks, Since '61

I never liked these big contracts - especially to the Oline - The Packers have proven that they develop the Oline - and if one looks at Baks salary and the number of games that he has played - I wonder about spending horrendous dollars on Oline. I also know that at team is only as good as the Oline. But Dallas spent so much money and draft capital on the Oline and won nothing. Now Dbacks are a different breed almost as important as the QB in shutting down the other teams number one receiver. So they deserve the big bucks if anyone does. So I am happy that he got paid - I hope that Stokes improves on the same trajectory that he started and then gets paid. One final note - and I have said this before - there is the salary cap and there is team expenditures - The Green Bay Packers have been having home games the last 3 seasons and have making money by the bucket full - Pay the players and the staff some of this - because it may not last.

John blood - Willie Buchanan was an excellent CB but he was injured and he was not a shut down corner. Plus the Packers traded him.

Charles Woodson was a great player but he played CB and Safety. Also he was not a shutdown corner. QBs still through his way. He played more seasons for other teams than he played for Green Bay.

There was a period of time when QBs did not throw to Adderley’s side of the field at all. Unitas did and he paid a price a few times. Daryle Lamonica threw one pass Adderley’s way in SB2 and Adderley returned it for a TD. Adderley played 9 seasons in Green Bay and then was traded to Dallas where he played his final 3 seasons.

Also I didn’t say that the Packers did not have any good/great CBS. I posted that the Packers have not had a shutdown corner since Adderley.

As of today the list of Packer CBs in the HOF begins and ends with Herb Adderley. C’mon Man. Thanks, Since ‘61

I would say Woodson is the only one who would equal or be better than Alexander. I’m not going to look it up but I doubt any of the others reached All Pro level. Alexander is truly looked at prior to the injury as a true shut down corner and top 3 in the league. Maybe Buchanan, I don’t remember.

A great signing for the Pack. If Alexander remains healthy this will solidify the defensive secondary for 4-5 years. This signing frees up a little cap room, 6.2 million from what I read. No need to sign a vet WR, invest in the Safety position next. A vet free agent Edge next to be explored. If Gute & company can find more diamonds in the rough this summer, WOW!

Schefter says Alexander "broke a bone in his shoulder." If so, that's very different than the AC joint injury we've heard about before, and it makes me feel better about re-signing JA. ACs are easy to re-injure, but a broken bone has little lasting impact.

“Separation” - does that mean that the Clavicle got the house and custody of the rotator cuff kids?

All (bad dad) jokes aside, depending on the type of fracture, you’d want that over damage to the joint capsule and associated other soft tissue structures.

That said, as he did it in week 4, and only barely got back onto the field circa 16 weeks later, that would make for one very slow mending (or complicated) bone fracture.

I tend to agree with what you’re intimating JB - someone’s whitewashing the actual severity of the injury.

What is an AC joint separation?
When the AC joint is separated, it means that the ligaments are torn and the collarbone no longer lines up with the acromion. Ligaments are tough, sinewy tissues that act like tethers to hold the bones together. When those ligaments are stretched or torn they can be very painful.

The injury to the ligaments in an AC separation can be mild to severe. The injuries are graded depending upon which ligaments are torn and how badly they are torn. A grade 1 injury is where the least damage is done and only the joint itself is injured. A grade 2 injury consists of damage to the ligaments at the AC joint and also to the other ligaments that stabilize the joint. This second set of ligaments attach the collarbone to the part of the shoulder blade called the coracoid. These ligaments are called the coracoclavicular ligaments. In a grade 2 injury, these coracoclavicular ligaments are only stretched but not entirely torn. The collarbone may not line up with the acromion if these are stretched and results in a lump at the AC joint. In a grade 3 injury, the coracoclavicular ligaments are completely torn and the collarbone is no longer tethered to the shoulder blade. As a result the collarbone no longer lines up with the acromion and there is a deformity at the joint.

When is surgery indicated?
The good news is that the majority of grade 1, 2 and 3 injuries do not need surgery. Even the grade 3 injuries usually allow a return to full activity with few restrictions. There are some surgeons who recommend surgical treatment for high-caliber athletes who throw a baseball for a living, but the vast majority of people do not need surgery for this condition. There are rare variations of this injury where the collarbone is higher than usual and almost sticking through the skin. In these cases surgery may be indicated but careful consideration should be given to the advantages and disadvantages of surgery. The advantage is that the deformity at the AC joint is corrected, but in exchange there is a scar on the shoulder. Another advantage for the very severe deformity is that it will eliminate pain if the end of the collarbone is rubbing the skin or muscle. Disadvantages of surgery are that there are risks of infection, a longer time to return to full function and continued pain is some cases. Surgery can be very successful in cases where it is indicated.

Great description JB! The shoulder really is a marvellous piece of bio-engineering! I’m adding in to your summary the anatomical structures of the Labrum and joint capsule. As you said, depending on what got messed up amongst the main structures (ligaments and tendons), the damage to the Labrum is also a mild factor - as torn material can float around in the joint and cause either impingement or inflammation (kind of like dirt and debris in a gear casing would).

I still think that they are downplaying the severity of that injury - which isn’t saying that it’s not reasonably healed now, just that the main injury wasn’t simply a fracture………… else his demeanour when he was getting carted away would be a LOT different to the one he presented (waving to the crowd and smiling).

Glad they got this done. It was the top priority. Jaire is the best player on the entire team. Yes, that includes Player/GM.

Heck yeah! Gonna be cranking "Them Changes" by Buddy Miles!! Congrats J-Alex and the Packer FO for making this happen...gotta go and get another tat....! Go, go, gooo

I looked at the list of current defensive players on the Packers and I ain't gonna lie, my eyes were like Mike Singletary's (da bears LB) back in his playing days.

GREAT!, How the heck am I supposed to act surprised when the Lombardi Trophy comes home???

Hey LLC...nope, Buddy Miles. I never knew he existed until a gentleman mentioned him. I bought some old school Bozak speakers and Marantz receiver with a new phonograph. This song rocks and the cover is super cool.

*Hell LLC, I just checked and they actually played the song together on occasion. Good call...

Yeah it was on the Band of Gypsys album. I didn't realize Buddy Miles had written it. Machine Gun from that album is one of the best guitar performances of all time. It was recorded New Year's Eve 1969 and New Year's Day 1970 at the Fillmore East. I read that when Jimi listened to the recordings he was a little pissed at all the scat singing Buddy had done on some of the tracks but because his vocals had bled over to the drum mikes they couldn't remove them!

Defense "WINS" Championships and this defense will be #1 this season so hopefully AR can get his receivers on the same wave length as him to connect for 50 TD's and the Super Bowl will be ours

I really find it amazing that some, on Twitter, think the Packers overpaid for Jaire. Some are saying that Surtain is a better CB, too!. To them, I say, you do not know how the Packers operate and if they think Surtain is a better CB, he can show it on the field. Jaime is THE MAN! GO PACK, GO!

Most people outside of Green Bay are completely unaware of just how loaded this Packers team is. The tired old "Rodgers has no help" narrative reigns supreme nationwide.

That would possibly be the same crew panning the Packers for NOT trading up to take OSU’s #2 or #3 WR - Heck yeah!!!! - let’s throw multiple 1st round picks to get one of 2 guys usurped by a Sophomore at the College level (actually 3 if you include the fact that Bama’s Williams transferred out of OSU at the end of the season before - possibly saw the writing on the wall with a very crowded WR room).

We can assume the team medical staff know the severity of his shoulder injury (thought it was an AC separation vs broken bone reported today? - National media probably wrong today)

I look forward to the contract breakdown by @TheGreatReynoldo. The Packers look to have a very solid Defense for the next few seasons.

If during the training camp cutdowns they can pick up some depth at Edge and/or Safety I'd be very happy. Actually a vet OL to compete with the kids, depending on Bakh and Jenkins recoveries, again assume the team has all the medical info they need to make those judgements.

NF,
Definitely need another Mercilous signing at Edge IMO, and possibly Safety. However, I feel very good where we are at on the OL.

Yeah great....wait what?? 😮

Seriously though he did end up playing a little as the 3rd safety later in the year so maybe it wouldn't be the worst idea. Does paying him a smidge over vet minimum this year make up for way overpaying him last year?
