Packers Select MarShawn Lloyd, RB in 2024 NFL Draft - Round 3

MarShawn Lloyd, University of Southern California, Running Back

MEASURABLES/PRO DAY:

5’9”

220 lbs.

40 Time: 4.46

CAREER NOTES:

Started his career at South Carolina, where he accumulated over 1,000 total yards and 12 total touchdowns across three seasons. Spent last season with the Trojans, rushing for 820 yards on 116 carries (7.1 yards per carry) and nine touchdowns. He also caught 13 passes for 232 yards, with only one drop. Former five-star recruit.

NFL SCOUTING REPORT:

NFL.COM

CHTV

Bleacher Report

33rd Team

FIT WITH THE PACKERS:

Lloyd should compete with AJ Dillon for RB2 and could be the eventual heir apparent to Josh Jacobs as RB1.

COMMENTARY:

Even though general manager Brian Gutekunst signed Jacobs to a lucrative multi-year deal and re-signed Dillon to a one-year deal this offseason, this pick should not be a surprise, especially considering how dynamic and multi-faceted Lloyd is. I'm not saying he's the next Aaron Jones, but he is roughly the same size (10+ pounds heavier) as the former Packer and has great speed. He needs to improve his ball security, but that element of his game did not stop NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah from ranking Lloyd as the No. 1 back in the class.

Interesting on tv, on the NFL network whoever the color commentator is says that Lloyd was his #1 RB in the draft and that the Packers "got the best running back in the entire draft" (saw the film clip on NFL.com, I think it was Daniel Jeremiah talking).

Nick Saban on ABC said he was his #2 RB in the entire draft.

CHTV had him at #4 RB, and at #49 on their Big Board (Packers get him with pick 88)!

Welcome to the Packers Mr. Lloyd. Sorry trolls, no drama here either.

Lloyd is the perfect compliment to Jacobs and Dillon; he has breakaway speed and can flat out blow by defenders. He'll need development as far as pass protection goes, but the big knock on him is that he carries the ball loosely and is prone to fumbling. So if the Packers can correct that, they have a pretty dynamic player that can fill the Aaron Jones role.

I am glad to see an RB selected as it was needed. He is about 15+ pounds heavier than Aaron Jones was and quicker 4.46 vs the 4.56 speed of Aaron Jones. However, it appears Lloyd is not as instinctive as a runner and has some fumbling problems. Guess we will just have to wait and see what we have in him. I am sure he is a solid back but not one of the top 3 or 4 RBs I was hoping for. You cannot draft every position and I feel Gutey did a pretty good job in rounds 2 and 3. I consistently drafted Edgerron Cooper and Ty'ron Hopper at LBs as well as Javon Bullard but have zero insight about Mershawn LLoyd.

I had other RB’s on my board—why isn’t Gutey consulting with me?

I am a USC grad so watched a lot of games…tough year! Anyway, Lloyd is a stud. All around. Strong, explosive, instinctive. He is an upgrade over Dillon and will be a nice compliment to Jacobs.

I had Lloyd as the most Packer-like Packer on the board and they took him. My personal favourite was Corum, but he went 5 picks earlier......
Nice pick.

I thought I like Corum a lot during the season. Then I watched him towards the end of the season, which was the only Michigan game I saw.

To me, he appeared a bit slower than I thought he would be and I actually like their other running back more! Glad we got Lloyd.

My RB draft crush was Jaylen Wright. If the Packers prefer Lynch, so be it. I thought they needed to add a face to the RB room and they did. Mission accomplished. Good deal.

Wright was my favorite too but I am curious to see what Lloyd brings to the table. I hope as everyone has indicated he is a real stud as the Packers offense needed a 2nd real running back as Jacobs cannot carry the load all by himself. If he is as good as indicated above the Packers likely did get a real steal. A couple more offensive linemen early on day three (today) and the offense will be scary good!

I love how Harbaugh attempted to head off critics of passing on a WR by saying they view OL as a weapon on offense. Darn right! A top OL is the engine of plenty of really good offenses.

Protect the franchise. Give those RBs consistent run lanes. That's as important as anything.

I'm not surprised we took a running back at this spot, but I'm surprised we took this one instead Wright or Allen or Guarendo. I shouldn't have been.

Bias Alert: I freakin always hated playing against short RBs. I'd much rather take a shot at a full sized target than have a sawed-off stump trying to dodge me. But that's just me. Darren Sproles is a member of my all-time " I Hate This Guy And Wish He Was On My Team" squad (which also includes Goddam Urlacher)

But having taken the time to put this under further review, this is probably a better pick than I would have made. Except for that one little problem he has holding onto the rock. You would think that coaching could improve that, because if he can't be trusted with the ball, he won't play.

Another poster said he's an upgrade on Dillon. If he doesn't miss games, always knows his assignment, gets his man blocked in pass protection, and doesn't turn it over, then he's an upgrade. Right now, he's just a faster runner.

We should all be happy with the Marshawn Lloyd pick. He is Aaron Jones the second, only a little heavier and a little faster. He makes people miss and he catches everything. Playing pro ball will get his focus on the football.

I was hoping the Packers would select RB Trey Benson
from Florida State.

But after seeing Marshawn Lloyd Highlights and his
intangibles he reminds me alot of Frank Gore Sr.
let's hope that is the case.
