Packers Roster Cuts Tracker for the 2023 NFL Season

Ongoing updates on today's Packers roster cuts. Check back for more additions to the list as they are made public.

Today is the fateful day that Brian "The Turk" Gutekunst derails the near-term NFL dreams of a group of hopefuls. Also, a reminder that today will end in an initial 53-man roster. Guys who make it today could easily be unemployed the next day or two after others become available on waivers.

Players on the practice squad can be placed on the active/game-day roster three times during the regular season.

If a player is made active on game day a fourth time, they must be signed to the 53-man roster from the practice squad.

Following the first three games, the player reverts to the practice squad.

No surprise. Let's the kids grow up togethor. Plus it saves cap space.
IMO - o 'Donnel stayed this long, as a contingency in sase they needed to xall back Mason Crosby. Now with O'Donnell gone - door is closed in Mason's possible return.

It was the safe option. However, when LaFleur said that the competition was real at the end of last week and then Whelan’s performance as a holder, punter and kick off guy on Saturday, I thought this might turn out as it did. I think we know who our emergency kicker is now too.

O’Connell wasn’t all that good by League standards, particularly later in the year. He was a big improvement on what went before though.

Bakh remains the lone security blanket big ticket player, despite the emergence of Walker and Jones and Nijman still being here. I can see why that “not trading” signal led people to see us sticking with the remaining older guard. Now, however, Carlson and Whelan could be a long lasting partnership.

I don’t see P Smith going anywhere. So I’m not sure how much that means for the rest of the cuts.

I think they will keep Bakh and then trade him by the deadline. The reason being is that they want his protection of Love so they can evaluate Love to help the FO determine if Love is the answer or if they want to go after a QB in next year's draft. Plus they can get more looks at Walker, Jones and Nijman so one of them can step into the LT spot. Just my opinion of course.

High-risk, high-reward with special teams this season. My one concern: can Whelan kick well in cold weather? O'Donnell wasn't amazing, but he was fairly consistent in the cold, and definitely less frustrating to watch than J.K. Scott was. More cap space is always nice; what to do with that money saved?

I agree, but I'd put S and TE as the most glaring needs. Starting safety, some better depth at TE. At least Tom could move inside, if needed, with the T depth available. Another slot corner wouldn't hurt either.

4155, it's a big ask to have a TE come in and even know where we need blocks. I'd much rather see an O lineman play the Mercedes Lewis role, which was a 6th O lineman.

SST, that's an interesting idea. I wonder if that'd make playcalling easier for opposing defenses? Lewis was there to block, first and foremost, but he'd go out for a pass every now and again. That kept defenses guessing, to an extent. That wouldn't be the case with a converted/borrowed OL.

The TE room needs some sort of boost to blocking though. Musgrave looks the part, already, but even he's been beat on blocking assignments a few times in camp. Kraft looks like a typical rookie TE, and needs more time to develop. Defenses will be using stunts and movements along the line to mess with both of them. Maybe the Bears will release Lewis!

I think Kraft has much more upside as a blocker than Musgrave. I'd like to see Musgrave develop a connection with Love as a checkdown running under coverage, being reliably open 5-15 yards beyond the LOS.

Kraft's ability may take a while to develop, yes :(

I say high-risk, as younger players are more prone to mistakes, and Whelan has little cold weather experience. Coming from the XFL, he's been playing all year. That could either be great due to him remaining in gameday shape, or bad from overuse. Fortunately, he's a punter, not a heavy use position like RB. Wear and tear should, hopefully, not be an issue. Not criticizing the choice; Whelan's upside is clear, Carlson too.

2023 is about starting to get the cap back in order, plus accumulating young talent and/or draft picks.

Dump old, pricey O'Donnell for young, cheap, unproven Whelan.

GB might finish with a few million to roll over, more if they extend Gary. OTC has GB almost $19M under the cap for 2024. That's without a salary cap number for GAry, which probably wipes out all of the $19M. GB needs $13M for the usual draft picks, IR/PUP, PS and the 52nd and 53rd contracts. GB will get that space from Bakh via trade, release or extension plus something from Aaron Jones but will have Runyan, Dillon, Nixon, Deguara, and Ford. Probably some rollover. Not sure what they do with Preston, but there is money there.

I suppose GB will be low middle class buyers in Free Agency. They might spend most of it on their own UFAs: Runyan, Dilllon, maybe Nixon.

O’Donnell was better than what went before, but he wasn’t particularly good in league terms. He’s older, was the 10th highest paid punter and on the last year of his contract. In kicking terms, Whelan was not obviously outplayed by him in camp in terms of leg or directional ability and it seems was seen as equivalent as a holder. It seems to me a perfectly reasonable choice to go with youth given that. I don’t say it was completely obvious, but on a young team it hardly seems unjustified.

And the punting carousel continues to turn. 6 different punters in 8 years, sheesh. From the likes of Jake Schum, Justin Vogel, J.K. Scott, Cory Bojorquez and Pat O'Donnell to the new guy... I hope we find the right one here.

Whelan has more upside potential, but O'Donnell is more consistent. I'm surprised to see the riskier option taken at both K and P. If Carlson is better with Whelan holding, that could be the biggest part of the decision.

Teams don’t like their QB holding these days and your number 2 may be your QB at any moment. In part that’s due to the risk of injury screwing up both roles, but more so practice rules under the modern CBAs. STs units practice while the others do. There’s no exemption for a QB to practice more so he can practice holding.

Gambling on Orzech (presumably they have a backup plan if he's claimed or signed away) to sneak someone through--likely someone headed to IR immediately after finalizing the 53.

Orzech is a vested vet. He doesn’t go through waivers and can sign with any team he likes. That’s probably why they chose to work with him him. I’m sure there will be a little something in his new contract in terms of cash now or other benefit. It may be they were working on a new deal anyway. He’s 28 and was signed through next year.

Austin Allen: The first real bubble player to get cut after punter Pat O'Donnell. So they are already down to three TEs, and really just two considering that Josiah Deguara mostly plays fullback. Deguara does have some TE skills though, so cutting Allen makes it less likely that Deguara will be a surprise cut, as some thought he might be.

Maybe, they could be intending a claim, which would mean rostering that player for at least 3 weeks or to sign a vet. A team is more likely to get a player with upside through waivers if he’s waived in the mass cut downs than later, so they could be moving Allen now to minimize risk and allow them to claim/sign a TE, an other position of need or retain extra at another position if they are willing to go with 2 plus Deguara and give Allen more time to develop.

I'm surprised by the Allen cut, but they will re-sign him if he clears waivers. Makes me wonder if Doubs, Wicks & Melton's hamstring injuries are playing into that?

I feel bad for some of these players with The Turk roaming as we speak, knocking on doors... collecting play books, but, chances are a bunch (up to 16 players can be signed to PS) are re-signed to the 53/PS sometime tomorrow. Waiver claims have to be in by Noon on Wednesday.

SJC just hit waivers according to Mike Garafolo. Tom Silverstein said Carrington Valentine's work in the slot late in TC might have made SJC expendable.

Malik Heath appears to have made the 53 based on his Instagram posting per Kyle Malzhan. "Watch me turn my DREAMS to REALITY (YEAH) 53 man roster!!"

SJC made himself expendable. He never got better. He was well down the list in the perimeter and had fallen in the slot behind Gaines as well as Nixon, who also may be waived today or in future. SJC dropped down the depth chart during last season. I was mildly surprised that they kept him this long. I suspect it was a last chance that he really hasn’t grasped. Just not good enough.

P.S. Gaines is indeed waived as well. I’m not surprised.

Gutekunst has less than 2 1/2 hours to work any trades prior to cut to 53 (3pm CST deadline). The toughest cuts for last.

WWVD? (What Would Vince Do?) Hopefully he's looking over Gutekunst's shoulder, wearing a white V-Neck t-shirt, khaki's and cleats, guiding the way for a special 2023.

Just saw Cowboys cut ILB Jabril Cox. WOW!!! Vikes waive DT Ross Blacklock, a 2020 R2. WTF happened to those two?

Blacklock took a pay cut to stay in Minnesota and didn’t make it. He’s not been good at all. He was outplayed by a UDFA, Day, who also didn’t make it.

Denver cut TE Albert Okwuegbunam, despite a greatly improved pre season offensively. He actually blocked this summer too, but more in the move sense than as a true blocking TE. .

Jonathan Owens is the one who's married to Simone Biles. Moore seemed a little better than the others or maybe he just didn't have as much of a chance to display his mediocrity before he got hurt. I would've liked to see more of him.

Reported Knee - Doubt they re-sign him.
Were the WRs that good or the CBs that bad now?
Also- Wilson RB said he made the 53.

Looks like Moore is cut b/c he is hurt and wouldn't be available for the first game. He will be waived with injury designation and then can be brought back, instead of being put on IR and not being available for some time.

I know I am not a coach or in training camp, but I still can't believe Moore is worse than Dallin Leavitt and a couple others in spite of special teams prowess. I really am concerned about the competency of our coaches. They just cut a guy with 4:3 speed who is a top 4 talent in the safety room so ST's could keep someone like Leavitt? Someone here far smarter than myself please explain this to me.

I guess being crap as a safety is a key component of the Barry Defense...

Valentine> Ballentine. She-mar never should have made his first cut. Moore was probably playing hurt from the start of Camp. Get Better.

So it looks like they are willing to roll with 4 CBs until Stokes comes back. That's surprising, but who knows, maybe Gute has another move up his sleeve.

Savage can play the slot. Get another veteran safety, asap.

Ballentine just got picked up by the Lions so no sneaking him onto PS. Good for him but would like to see more depth as those guys tend to get dinged up.

Not worrying about any of this stuff. Not at all. Gutekunst's personnel staff has proven themselves in my eyes. A lotta ballgame left.

I mean, ILB Corey Littleton was just released by the Texans... he's in complete control of his destination being a veteran - Littleton can sign anywhere, and had the best years of his career under Joe Barry. ILB depth, anyone???

Wow. Wow. Wow. If that happens... And, there's more.

I’m with you greengold. What you see now is not the end. Maybe a small trade or a waiver pickup or two coming. Sit tight.

Emanuel Wilson is IN!!! Whew! I like that we've got Cox Jr. and Heath too! Looks like 3 surprisingly solid additions with unique gifts.

Packers keeping 6 OLB too! Good. Hollins makes it.

Cox and Wilson were the ones I was hoping would be protected on the roster, so I'm happy. They cut Grant Dubose, but he should be safe.

Other bubble players who have been cut: Patrick Taylor and Bo Melton, although it could be an injury settlement with Melton. It will be interesting to see if they elevate Taylor from the practice squad a few times to play on special teams and make Wilson a healthy scratch on game days. But they can only do that a few times. Maybe they are giving up on Taylor.

I'm guessing that with the amount of good tape Wilson put together this preseason that they thought it would be impossible to sneak him through PS. So hopefully Taylor, not being a big name and not showing anything extraordinary in preseason just might. I do believe we need to pursue trading a lineman or two to shore up the safety position IF there are any teams that might be safety heavy.

I really hope Dubose is signed to the PS. I had high hopes for him and truly believe injury killed his chance to make the team. One injury and he could help.

Looks like Newman made the cut. I just don’t see it. He hasn’t been good. Don’t understand why he’s still here.

11 OL on the 53? Maybe an upcoming trade? I'm happy Heath, and Cox made the roster.

Checking in late after some work...no real surprises, are there?

See one or two moves coming at TE, S, CB, or maybe ILB to the 53.

Can see Allen, Taylor, Sapp, maybe a CB likely going to PS...and several more. LS back on tomorrow. Newman made it I guess. Hopefully he's a place holder for an IOL upgrade.

Do you think the need for ILB is due to Campbell's injury? To add to your list, I hope DuBose makes the PS as well.

Just an observation: We have a new punter who routinely booms 50-60 yard punts. In order to be most effective It is imperative we have a gunner on special teams with blazing speed who can get down field fast. A 60 yd punt is wasted if it is returned for 20 yards. Hence, I was disappointed to see Blazing Bo Melton is not on the 53 man list. Hopefully he is put on the injured list and is not out right released. Moreover I do not think he was given a chance to showcase his abilities as a a WR, much less his unbelievable speed.
