Packers reportedly signing RB Josh Jacobs

Jacobs has rushed for at least 800 yards in all five of his NFL seasons.

The Packers are on the free agency board

Brian Gutekunst indicated when we spoke to him at the Combine that he preferred to have at least one "bigger back" on the roster

“I do think we would always like to have one power, bigger back on the roster for short-yardage situations and playing in the weather and closing out games,” Gutekunst said.

Jacobs certainly fits the bill and, assuming the Packers work out the Aaron Jones contract situation, absolutely raises the talent floor at the running back position in Green Bay.

Jacobs has rushed for at least 800 yards in all five of his NFL seasons. He led the league with 1,653 rushing yards to go along with 12 touchdowns in 2022. His last season with the Raiders was certainly a disappointment. He finished with 805 yards and six touchdowns in 13 games after a tough contract dispute during the offseason.

Still only 26, I suspect Jacobs will look reborn in Matt LaFleur's offense.

Wow! Didn't see that coming. Now sign Jones and the running back tandem will be practically unstoppable. Somewhere Jordan Love is smiling today.

Next, a safety.

No problem with the player (pending amount of the contract). But I thought the smart money was to draft a RB in the first 3 rounds. I guess Gutekunst was serious about our SuperBowl window being open.

Swift & Pollard just signed for 3/24.5 so he should be in that range.

Interesting. He certainly has had some dominant games. The Jones/Jacob backfield would be something to see.

Obviously that backfield duo isn’t happening.

Gute wanted a RB.
We heard the rumors-
I like it.
Saving a early draft pick.
And replacing Dillion is a No Brainer.

I love it— he’s one year removed from the best in the NFL.

Oh yeah, the man is a bruiser, and should be even better with a good offense around him. Oops, great offense.

Well, that was not what I was expecting. I still hope they draft another RB as an insurance policy so we don't have to see what happened last year happen again. But Jacobs runs hard and in my opinion he adequately replaced Dillon. I just hope it wasn't for a ton of money, because we have other, much more pressing needs in the secondary and at LB. Unless Gute plans on fixing the O-line and entire secondary with the draft, we need all the cap space we can get.

I’ve been seeing rumors about them releasing Jones but nothing confirmed.

Jones is a Cowboy killer...They may get him to finish out his career.

I don't know what to think about this. I love the player. I can't hate on this move. I just really thought a bigger swing was going to be on a LB and/or safety. We can argue whether that should be the case here, and I am sure there will be those who will want to. Does this mean drafting more than one RB is now an antiquated notion? Very interesting. Does this mean the draft will tilt quite a bit more towards OL and defense only? Hmmmm. I'm a curious Packer fan today.

Edit: They cut Jones. Now I am not so happy about any of this. Though the writing was on the wall, this is a tough one to swallow

The OL is a must...RB-Rookie a must and FA-FS a must as well.

This was not surprising as RB was a critical need. Jacobs is thunder but does not have blazing speed. I do like the pickup for sure. Also I would not be surprised if Gute goes for another RB early on day two. We need to start grooming Jones' replacement. Preferably one with blazing speed e.g Trey Benson, Jaylen Wright or Isaac Guerendo. All have 4.3 speed and are a threat to score a TD every time they touch the ball. It is rare that teams go through an entire season without injuries to the RB position. Moreover the run game is key to the Packers success.

It's a young man's game. Look for the Packers to draft at least one running back.

Jones to the Vikings. Why no trade to get capitol back and send him far away to not play against him. This is a big financial mistake. 2 great FA moves and 1 release $hit$how. Management didn't think of this scenario?
