Packers Question of the day - Was Knile Davis Booted too soon?

After just 13 offensive snaps and a grand total of five carries, the curtains closed on the Packers' newest running back acquisition, Knile Davis.

However, with James Starks set to make his return soon, Ty Montgomery capable of providing a sufficient tailback talent in the backfield, Don Jackson running hard against the Falcons and even an option in fullback Aaron Ripkowski, it's beginning to make sense. Davis wasn't necessarily needed.

Was it too soon to release the former Chiefs running back after a small sample size, or is it properly justified?

"Was Knile Davis Booted too soon?"

That's a good question. I would have liked to have seen what Davis could have done once he learned the offense.

I do like what I have seen from Jackson. He runs with power and speed. I would like to see him get more opportunities.

Every other team seemed to add pieces today and the Packers stand pat with Jackson and possibly Starks who was pretty bad in the first few weeks.
Last weekend Aaron Rodgers was the leading rusher, the week before a WR. I like Monty in the backfield don't get me wrong, but we saw him get stuffed on the goal line already. I guess we can use Ripper on goal line situations but at the end of the day it would be nice to have a "Real" RB.

This reminds me of 2012 when Ted tried to "Get By" with MD Jennings and the other trucks he had playing Safety or trying to "Get By" at the TE position. You'd think he's TIRED of trying to get by.

What other teams added players today?

They do have to find some sort of a running game. I'm not sure who they could have added that would be much help.
I like what I have seen from Jackson, and Ripkowski is proving to be a tough runner to try and bring down. And you know I love Ty in the backfield. Hopefully Starks can provide something when he comes back.

The difference with this and 2012 is this is all injury related. 2012 he went in expecting players to make jumps which they never did.

I'm actually feeling really good about the team. Get back a few of these injured players and they will be the team we thought they would be!

You seem to keep forgetting that TT's objective is to save money rather than win championships. He has won HIS trophy. It is generally regarded that TT is one of the best at managing the Cap. As long as Murphy sees TT and MM putting fannies in the seats, we fans have to be content with the age-old label: "Contenders". I suppose there are worse fates. We could e Jets fans

Depends on what it took for the 7th round pick to kick in. Given his unexpected release I would say not giving up a pick for a guy they where "meh" on is understandable.

My follow up question is, What position do the Packers add to the 53?

Do they activate Linsley to the 53? (my most likely scenario)

The only players on the PS that I would think they would bring up to the 53 would be Reggie Gilbert or Carl Bradford, just based on them being with the team the longest.

Do they bring someone in from the street and if so what positions?

My guess is Corey Linsley. It doesn't get any easier down the stretch for the guys in the trenches. After watching Don Barclay come in relief for TJ Lang, I want a little insurance on the O-line.

You all KNOW that Knile was booted because TT didn't want to pay the 7th round pick unless he absolutely had to.

TT the draft pick *****.... haha

Side note: I too wonder what is going to be done at RB. Something has to be done. WE have NO ONE

I think that's a big part of it too. God forbid Thompson give up a 7th rounder, or any pick for that matter for a position of dire need. What he should have done is looked for just a tad better RB than Davis and given up a 6th rounder. considering his history in the 6th round it's a pretty much sure fire bust/wasted pick. Normally a player he could have had as an UDFA...Ted's favorite!

I understand that Spud, I was being facetious. Just poking fun at Thompsons 6th round selections over the years is all. Since he had a trade partner in Kansas City, he maybe could have tried for Channdrick West instead. Who knows, he might have asked about him.

The point is they really NEED a RB, Bearmeat is absolutely right!

When Davis couldn't, in the face of some experience and repeated injuries to the knees of Jamaal Charles, hold off Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West for the backup slot in KC, it tells you something. The Packers gave him a minimal 'test drive' but there needs to be a solution on the horizon. Monty and Starks aren't givens for next week against Indy, and they're going to want to be able to attack that Colts defense on the ground.

Earlier on in his career, TT hung onto projects and ended up with a bunch of average guys who would not factor in to the success of the team. There is a little more urgency to our player development that I like. Maybe the coaches saw poor practice habits, poor decision making, lack of mental capacity, whatever and pulled the plug rather than taking on a project. After all, he was 4th on the KC depth chart. No point in adding more average guys, particularly to the skill positions.

I like the way that TT kept a whack of UDFA after this camp. Sticking with guys who are practice squad or special teams only caliber doesn't guarantee you anything anymore. We saw that with Jarrett Bush and now Chris Banjo. Just wondering how Carl Bradford, Don Barclay and Demtri Goodson are still in the picture.

Sometimes you find a fit and sometimes you don't. Davis didn't fit - next.

Personally, Knile Davis never had a chance to learn the offense or really showcase any of his abilities. Can you imagine a company hiring you and then 2 weeks letting you go? WTF?
2 weeks isn't enough time for anyone.

Unless Davis did something behind the scenes that upset coaches (which I doubt), then my guess is they decided to release him to make room for Cory Linsley or some other injured guy that is returning (too many count), and it purely was a roster move.

However, you'd think they would plan ahead. Abbrederis and Banjo got waived too, so it's not like there already was roster spots being created. Who knows.

With Lang nursing a bad hip the thought process might be bring Linsley back in and have Tretter move over to RG instead of Barclay if Lang is beat up that bad. Also until the weather turns, the O we are watching is the O that is going to be run. 40-50 passes and 12-15 runs per game. So really no need for the jewel of the Knile.

you got that right. The few snaps he've had to play this season with someone out on the OL were nothing but disastrous. The one snap against the Falcons was so pathetic that the DL even fell down, he couldn't believe how easy it was to get by Donnie... Wouldn't have made a difference to put anyone in there.

As far as receivers go, it really doesn't matter what one's designation is. whether you play formations with 4 WR and one TE or 5 WR, doesn't really make a difference if all go out on routes. The thing is, I doubt he can block. Just too small. So that should answer that question.

Handsback, I like you and I am going to assume that you are trick or treating me. Janis missed so many blocks in that game, it was pathetic. Add to this, his on-going ability to miss assignments and run sloppy routes. He has the physical tools but I wonder what his football IQ is. I just don't see us teaching him a new position in this century.

Razer, I don't know you well enough to punk ya. But I will try from time to time throw something outrageous to think about and that's the case with JJ. Janis isn't a space kind of guy. He has trouble blocking in space as well as manipulating a person that's on him into a false step. He doesn't have very good body control. Think of a TE, he doesn't have to worry about space...his guy to block is either right beside him or within arm's length. Blocking in that case, probably not a problem with him. For a TE, he could do a lot of simple routes that open the middle of the field. I would worry about his catching ability, but 1-2 catches a game should play to his strengths.

He might lose some speed, but he's a tremendous athlete and guys like that seem to make either good TEs or OLBs.

Seeing that RRodgers cant block at all, wouldnt be any worse than what we have now. Even if he caught only one pass a game in that role his YAC alone would be an improvement. TE situation is pathetic. Yeesh

They saw him every day in practice. And while the time certainly was not enough to learn the playbook, I think one can judge the footballing ability by seeing a person in practice. And he probably wasn't good enough, and not better than what they're having at the moment...

And let's face it, he isn't the second coming, and will never be more than an avg NFL RB at the best, and that probably won't happen either...

I think they let Davis go because either Monty and/or Starks will be back for this week and also they want to make room for Linsley. If those are not the reason then Davis must be really bad to leave themselves with Jackson and Rip as their RBs. Personally, I'm hoping that Monty is able to go. Thanks, Since '61
