Packers Question of the Day: Rodgers' Clearance a Smart Move?

We all know the weight of the risk vs. reward in the situation fo Aaron Rodgers returning to the field this Sunday in Carolina, and on Tuesday night, he was officially cleared by the medical staff to play in that game and the games moving forward.

Given the playoff implications -- and the Packers' gradually fading chances at making those playoffs -- was bringing back Rodgers the right decision, even at the risk of re-injury?

I don't think "smart" weighs into the clearance. He either clears or he doesn't. Keep in mind that they still need to activate him from IR and make a corresponding player move to open a spot for him. I don't know if there's someone ready to go on IR. Maybe they cut the Ulrick.

The "smart" part comes in how they use him.

They're saying that House might miss as little as one week, or maybe two. His kind of injury (fractured transverse process) is not one that gets worse or leads to reinjury, it's more a matter of pain tolerance. I would be surprised, given how thin they are at CB, if they put him on IR when he could still return during the regular season.

I know they were talking about his back but at first they were saying it was a shoulder so I don't know if his back and his shoulder now anyways I hope you can return we have to keep winning and it's going to be a tough game at Carolina they're better than what they used to be about four or five games ago in the Packers defense always has problem with running quarterbacks

I trully believe that there is not larger danger for Aaron than it would be if he is not playing with broken collarbone... And I have some medical education, btw...

Lot of you do not have that education, but you are affraid - it must be something terrible... No, it is natural process, to be injured and to heal. That is how every organism is made...

So, I say if Aaron get medical clearance for playing football (those physicians knows physical risks of the football games), main question is do Aaron Rodgers want to play.

As we all knows - he wants that very hard...

So, that is smart move...

We must be spoiled as fans if we are actually debating this. Rodgers is healthy and we have a very good chance of making the playoffs... no brainer. Of course it’s smart for him to come back. Most franchises go all out in any attempt to make the playoffs. We have a shot so we have to take it. Playoffs aren’t guaranteed every season. Go pack go!

I think ultimately what people are debating here is just how good that chance actually is. It's all predicated on beating two very good teams (one on the road), and then Detroit on the road. Winning road games against winning teams in the NFL is hard. Carolina has suffered two home losses (Philly and NO) and scraped by Atlanta. The Packers haven't been the same caliber of team as those, but the track record of Carolina shows that teams that can move the football will give them fits.

The opportunity is there, but the deck is stacked against this team getting to the playoffs. That doesn't mean it won't be a fun ride...

"The opportunity is there, but the deck is stacked against this team getting to the playoffs. That doesn't mean it won't be a fun ride..."

How much is the deck stacked against us though? I have ready by many odds makers that if they win out (which isn't guaranteed), that they have a 90-93% chance of making it to the playoffs.
The odds were stacked against us in the Browns game when we were down by 2 TD's to win that game. Odds makers said we had a 4% chance of winning that game. I guess it was the Browns so you probably have to at least double that percent so say 8% chance of winning. The fact is we won when the odds were against us.

We don't need that much help to get in. If we win out, we need 1 more loss from the Panthers, 1 loss by Seattle, 2 losses by Atlanta, Rams and Saints need to lose all 3. Or if Vikings lose out they could still win the North. I'm not expecting that, but those are some of the things they need. Yes they need help, but its not out of this realm for it to happen.

And yes. This will be a fun ride. As a sports fan, how can you not want that excitement? And guess what, if we don't make the playoffs, we will be sitting in the same spot we are now for draft spot. High teens.

I think the winning out part is the challenge. It's very likely that if they can manage that, the other parts will take care of themselves. These are three games that aren't gimmes...even with a #12 at the top of his game.

No they are't gimme games. And I'm not saying they will win them.

I'm just saying the addition of Rodgers is HUGE, and gives us a lot better of a chance.

But thats what makes these games fun.

Every player in the NFL takes a risk of injury on every play of every game. Carson Wentz, JJ Watt, Andrew Luck, Shazier, and many others were all healthy when they suffered their season ending and in some cases career ending injuries.

Rodgers and the Packers know the risks. Rodgers wants to play because he is a professional football player and this is what professionals do in any industry or business.

He could get hit and suffer a completely different injury.

Sports is about winning and winning now. Slim as it is the Packers still have a shot for the playoffs and an SB. As long as they go for it 110% with everything they have on every play regardless of the score or the time remaining I can be OK with the results. We can worry about next season and the future when it gets here. Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since '61

Hey, you're the one that called me out. You're the one that said I know nothing. I'm betting my 4 years of playing at a Div. 1 school and 2 years as a grad assistant (go Redbirds) put to shame your supposed expertise, that from what I can tell is based on the fact you once spoke to Holmgrem.

I don't care if you don't share the same opinion as I do, all of us have differing opinions...but that's kind of what this and other sites like it are for. If you're going to call others out because you don't agree with them, you'd better be prepared to get some back.

Cuervo - you can disagree me with me all day. That's fine, you are entitled to your opinions. But at least back up your disagreements with facts instead of insults. I commented on your criticisms of MM and I gave you some background as to why I disagree. My point in doing that was that you repeatedly post that MM is a below average NFL coach apparently because he has a losing record when AR doesn't play. OK, then which great or even excellent NFL coach wins as consistently as MM has done without excellent QB play?

Paul Brown had Otto Graham, Lombardi had Bart Starr and a great defense, Don Shula had John Unitas and Dan Marino, Tom Landry had Don Meredith and Roger Staubach, Chuck Noll had Terry Bradshaw, Bill Walsh had Joe Montana, Holmgren had Brett Favre, Belechick has Brady, MM has Aaron Rodgers, and I could go on and on.

Since you played at Division 1 then you know that any coaches plan or play call depends on the execution of the players on the field. A coach could make the perfect play call for a certain situation but if the players don't execute the play won't work. And sometimes even when the execution is good a great player on the defense makes a great play to stop a well executed play. Even Lombardi's players said he was the best coach between Monday and Saturday in preparing them for the game but come Sunday he was useless to them.

To be fair,if you are going to blame MM for the losses then you should give him credit for the victories as well. And he has about a .650 win% as Packers HC.

Beyond that if you think that MM is a below average coach you may want to look at the players he has been working with, especially since the 2011 season. The draft picks are nearly all second tier players by the time they are drafted due to where the Packers usually select in the draft. Then those guys get hurt. And guess what, they're being replaced with third and maybe 4th tier players. Then some of them get hurt. Now you're recruiting guys off the street basically. Then you take this patchwork work team and go play a team on the rise that has been drafting in the 4,5 or 6 or at least top 10 spots for the last 3-4 years. Guess what? They have better players than we do and they beat us in a playoff game.

Is that really MM's fault, especially in this era of the NFL with free agents, salary caps, practices limited by the CBA, rules changes and a plague of injuries every season and still make the playoffs for 8 consecutive seasons and counting. If it is, then you are correct, MM is a below average coach and I don't anything about the NFL.

BTW, as a Division 1 player if you are still in decent playing shape we could use you on defense, because as I said we're at the point where we're playing with some less than division 1 players at this point. I'm assuming your redbirds are the Illinois State Redbirds, if yes, I've always liked their helmets. If not ISU then I'm not familiar with the team.

As for taking some back, I'm fine with that and I wasn't the one that was upset about being called out. I appreciate your apology for hurting my feelings but none of this is important enough for me to be hurt over. Thanks, Since '61

I agree with your post, Since '61 and Dobber's, too. This is a medical decision and is between the doctors and AR. If he is cleared, of course GB's FO and coaches should play him.

Cuervo couldn't resist being snarky, but he isn't wrong, imo. I don't think sports is always about winning and winning now. If so, Favre would have been our QB in 2008 instead of AR, baseball wouldn't have its annual big name trade for a passel of minor leaguers, and NFL teams would not trade older but still pretty good players for mid round picks.

TGR - you are correct. There are times when teams make conscious decisions to clean house, reduce their salary exposure and/or rebuild. But the goal is to get to the championship, if not the current season then soon after. In a case like the Packers and other NFL playoff contenders they are all trying to win now, at least I hope they are.

To me if you have a player like Aaron Rodgers and he's is available to play, you play him and go for it rather than sit him out until next year for fear of re-injury. Next season may come and we may have entirely different set of circumstances which keep us out of playoff/SB contention. That was my point about winning now. We have the opportunity to go for it so let's go.

As for Cuervo, I was a bit "snarky" with him myself earlier this week when regrettably I allowed frustration to get the better of me over the repetitive theme of his posts. Time to hit the reset button.

Thanks, Since '61

"gradually fading chances"? Have to disagree with you there, Zach. Yes the road is tough, but winning out gives us a 92% chance at making the playoffs. Considering how hard it is to even get a ticket to the big dance any given season, I'm all for giving it our best shot.

I'm with the other commenters on the risk, too. If they cleared him, he's healed enough to play. Risk of re-injury is no greater than risk of any other injury. He's not paid to sit and watch!

Rogers could fall down the stairs in his home today I mean it's life people if it's meant to be that he plays then he's going to play and if it's meant to be that he doesn't play then he wont play ,but for right now they have cleared rogers to play. Jimmy johnson said, "failure is the shadow of greatness". If he goes in and wins the next three games then the medical staff and the coaching staff are all geniuses but if he goes in and something happens to him then we're going to gripe and complain that they shouldn't have put him in every player knows that it could be there very last game at any time.

Hindsight is 20/20 let's just go and do it and be done with it stop overthinking it. Because you think you're going to get hurt again you most definitely will , so you gave to get back on the horse and start riding.

I have read many spots that said he is at no more risk to re-injure his shoulder then he was Week 1.

The way I view it. If McKenzie (who notoriously doesn't clear people) was comfortable in clearing Rodgers, then I feel good about it.

I have also read that the odds of the Packers making the playoffs are around 90-93% if they win out. Well the only thing they can control is winning the games they play. Rodgers gives them the best chance to do that.

If we have a chance to make it to the playoffs, we have to go for it! It may not work out. we may not make the playoffs. But if there is a chance, I want to go for it with that chance.

I just heard on the radio a top doctor from Michigan University said there’s no problem if he plays. Also there’s no chance the collar bone could break easier just because he broke it weeks ago. Basically it should be healed.

Rogers could go in and break his right ankle what the heck does that have to do with his shoulder that they were worried about? You're worried about him injuring his shoulder but if he goes in and breaks the ankle then what do you say well we shouldn't have put him in at all, because he wouldn't have hurt his ankle even though we were thinking about his shoulder? No. So, just go in the game and play and I don't think I've ever seen the Packer medical staff clear someone that wasn't ready to be cleared and every game since the Pittsburgh game I was seeing Rodgers throw 50-yard bombs before those games.

If he's cleared then yes, he should play. It wouldn't be fair to all the other players that have been busting their chops to keep things afloat. Not sure that they will win the next three, but I wasn't very sure they could win 6 in a row last year and look what happened. With #12 under center, this team has a chance against anyone, anywhere.

The Vikes QB was sacked 6 times on the game last week and they have one of the better O lines in football. Matter of fact their coach, who doesnt like underperformances, took the O line to the wood shed this week and made it known to the press he was doing it.

I would not be shocked to see a rout and I dont want to hear crap about Rogers being rusty. He could have sat out.

"a chance"
There's always a chance. The chances of this team beating good teams and making it to the SB are VERY small. But it does make it more exciting than watching Hundley.

The chance of getting rid of MM are now very small, IMO, now that the team did so "great" by beating the worst of the NFL in OT. But there is still a chance we get rid of DC. That should be independent of AR's return but probably won't be.

So that's the season - comes down to a slim hope of a SB and a reasonable hope to get rid of DC. Another year of wasting AR.

"Another year of wasting AR."

Really? We'll have no idea what might've been if he hadn't gotten hurt. This team would very possibly be competing for a bye at this point if he'd played a full season, but also in a dogfight over the division. We can crap on the defense all we want, but with a wide-open NFC this team looked like a legit SB contender until Anthony Barr drove #12 into the turf. Wentz getting hurt only solidifies that.

Honestly, the chances of no MM in 2018 were always pretty small. I feel the only chances that MM would be gone in 2018 would be...
1. ...he decides to leave on his own (pretty unlikely).
2. ...the Packers change GMs and bring in a new voice from the outside who wants his own coach (more likely than #1, I think, but still pretty unlikely)
3. ...he chased a roadrunner off a cliff not realizing roadrunners aren't subject to the physical laws of nature.
He's going to be back based mostly on his track-record of success. 2017 has been painful at times, but he would've had to lose his locker room to really be in danger of being canned...unless a battle erupts over removing assistants leads to him being removed.

But more seriously, while I do stand by my Keenum comment, I think the biggest regression is coming to their OL. They have played WAY over their collective heads this year. There's no depth. They're old.

Regarding the OL, Spielman basically threw spaghetti at the wall in 2016 and nothing stuck. He did the same thing, with the same age and caliber of players in 2017, and it ALL stuck.

Big time regression coming to a purple town near you. Soon.

This is what we have good doctors for. The only people capable of assessing his physical condition and thus the risks are those who have the expertise and have examined him and his information. It seems that the notoriously conservative medical approach that the Packers adopt has cleared him. Therefore I assume that the risk of long term additional harm is considered negligible.

Yes. Everything is in the hands of the Docs. No-on else has the knowledge, empirical experience and friends/colleagues they can pump for alternative expert advice, like an experienced med team.

I have no idea how much pressure they are under to rule one way or another, but Docs are pretty good about saying what has to be said and balancing what the patient (and team) want, with the patients best interest.

Coming back to play now may be the 'right' decision, or Aaron may be injured again quickly - no-one knows, but what else can you do but get the best expert opinion and run with it - the NFL has never guaranteed safety.

And I won't say that the Minnesota player that tackled Rodgers wasn't a dirty hit but I will say that I saw other players on other teams do the same thing they would grab the quarterback and drive them into the ground. I saw almost the exact same hit on Jay Cutler he came to the sidelines and I was worried about him holding his shoulder ended up his ribs were broken it was a clean tackle but the defender grabbed him and shoved him into the ground with his complete body weight I have also seen quarterbacks who used to slide and the players would just touch them but now whene the quarterback slides he is defenseless and the defense guy is coming in diving in to take off his head now you're seeing quarterbacks diving forward to where they could suffer a neck injury and that's the reason they were told to slide on their rear end in the first place basically what I'm saying is Rodgers only got hurt because the intent of the defensive player was to drive his shoulder into the ground or his head or anything he could and make the tackle to do anything they can to take Rodgers out of the game so the referees need to be watching this very carefully and they need to be instructed before the beginning of the game.
Basically if Rogers is going to get hurt it's because the defense wants him hurt and they're going to play dirty cuz they know Rogers could kill him at any moment with his passing. I believe it's going to be shootout time boys. You know we can't depend on our defense for nothing Dom Capers we're going to need a lot of points on the board because Dom Capers will give up at least 30 easy so we're going to need at least 35 points minimum

Play wasn't over - he threw interception so it was going on, just nowhere near the Martin-McMahon encounter.

I am not a doctor and I do not know the real risk, other than what has been said. I think MM and TT realize he is their sole purpose for success for the past 10ish years. I think that played into the decision a lot.

If TT and MM made the decision to clear #12 and not licensed medical professionals, then there's something wrong from the start.

Very true. I think Rodgers wants to play and that was part of the decision. I also think most people realize that Hundley probably is not going to win against the panthers, and one more loss definitely means the end of this season.

I have not read everything about the risk. But I wonder if it's worse breaking the same bone with screws in it or if it's pretty much the same as a normal break?

I think I'd like to address Adams and his contract here. Doesn't make much sense to most of you does it? We've made are point about Capers. Does it really go with this article? No it doesn't. Your so blind. This is about Chance. And Chance is what it is. Winning, Not Losing! Winning is contagious! Got that Contagious. A-rod thinks we have a chance. A-ROD is feared. MM knows we have a chance. And everyone plays against any odds. So they believe in chance. Capers finally can make good on the chance he is given. He wants to win too. REGARDLESS! Players and coaches alike, still Love Capers. I don't see anybody giving up! And that is contagious. Not GIVING UP! IT makes winners. Not negativity. As many of you so want to point out.

Capers can finally make good on the chance he has given are you nuts dude he has been given chances since 2006 or something and he only came through one time because we played the same defense that he developed with the Pittsburgh Steelers . What? players and coaches love him well there's the problem right there dude cuz all the fans can't stand him Capers wants to win yeah he may he may want to win but he sure knows how to lose and take those millions of dollars and put them in his pocket. And then I don't appreciate you saying let's give him one more chance that turns into let's give him another year and how about another year and how about another year after that no he already decided his bus going this year and that's it it's not dom chances it's dumb crappers and we're flushing him down the toilet for good

Egg Nog? No but that is funny. Capers= it's one last time. Not another year. The players have voted their confidence in him earlier. Are you suited up? I'm not giving him anything. I agree it's time to try another DC. But were talking about playing to win and making the most of it. Your ballistic on posts that have been going on since A-Rod went down. Just stop and enjoy A-Rod, and the packers play.

Can those who have examined Aaron Rodgers' injured collarbone please tell us what they have observed? Cuz I'm not sure what anyone else has to say...

I have, but it required a pair of binoculars, a lawnchair, a box of donuts, and a very uncomfortable discussion with Brown County's finest. My lawyer says I shouldn't talk about it.

Im a fan, so I want to win. I’ve also been a coach in my life, so I know that when your best player is available you play them. While I would prefer to see us finish outside the playoffs and get a better draft position, I really do enjoy how much heart this team has shown. I want our packers to be rewarded for their determination this season. I expected some of the players to give up this year and yet I cannot identify a single one who has done so. Get AR out there and see what we can do!

The strange thing is if the Packers win the next 3 and win the North they can wind up in the Super Bowl. Impossible?

Lphill, As it stands right now, GB is 12-1 to win the NFC, down from 66-1 a couple of weeks ago. I'm starting to like my 35-1 ticket at least a little bit.

We need to string 4 IF's together to get in the Dance, & if you look at them, it's probably a stretch, but not as Tough as it would appear. Before anything else, Sunday is hopefully the 1st of 7 SB's for GB. It may be the Toughest of them all. Sunday is a SB for GB & better be looked at as such, & Rodgers needs to be 100%, not 80% as I've heard.

#1 IF we Win Out, we should get in. My guess would be by way of Seattle or even Carolina, if we Win Sunday.

#2 Vegas has MINN on Top at 7-2. What the Hell Is That??

#3 We need to put a Decent Offensive Line on the field & have No Injuries.

#4 Somehow, we have to put a Defense on the field & have them play at least decent.??

As I said, It's not as Tough as you might think. We are capable of beating every team ahead of us. We just can't afford a loss.

The teams ahead of GB are:

MINN 7-2
PHILLY 9-2
NO 5-1
LAR 6-1
SEATTLE 8-1
ATLANTA 8-1
CAROLINA 8-1

It's a Big IF, but if we make the playoffs, I like our chances against any of these teams, "IF" Rodgers is 100% & we can play decent on Defense. It all starts this Sunday. It's a SB.

Love Rodgers back if 100% healed. But, the bigger worry and issue is our DEFENSE. I hope our defense helps our offense?

Bottom line - each team gets about a dozen possessions each game. If the defense can somehow force a couple turnovers and say four or five punts that leaves five or six scores. If CAR scores include three FG's, then GB can win - assuming GB offense can get to 31 points which I expect.
