Packers Question of the day - Is the relationship between Mike McCarthy and Aaron Rodgers Dwindling?

A lot of speculation has been made that part of Aaron Rodgers' on-field frustration can be attributed to the relationship he and his head coach of 11 seasons share.

After the two were seemingly at an odds on Sunday night and Rodgers' snappy attitude in his post-practice interview on Wednesday, it isn't that far-fetched of an assumption.

Could their relationship be faltering and ultimately causing more problems for an offense that is already lacking efficiency? Also, will McCarthy return for the 2017 season if the Packers make a playoff run? If not, what would be the win cut-off total that would ultimately result in McCarthy losing his job?

The magic 8 ball says, "-it is decidedly so" .
If the Packers lose on the hallowed ground of Lambeau, again, to the Lions on Sunday, McCarthy needs to be shown the door.

No, I think Aaron Rodgers should be benched until he come back to old himnself...

And if you fire Mike McCarthy, who will you hire for HC? Please, give us some names...

You don't bench a guy with a resume like Aaron Rodgers. You kick him out the door or he hangs up the cleats. A 20 some million dollar player won't be on the bench without injury.

Three fumbles...Missed targets(to many to count)...14 games with a QB rating less than 100...Hurry up O with multiple delay of game calls not to mention using every time out. These are all Aaron issues. Bench him for ONE game and see what happens. Tell me that Brett H or Joe C cant play a game and achieve a QB rating of 85...I see NO downside.

Just pay him what Blain Garber makes since that is his equivalent over the last 14 games. The Blain Garber contract clause....

Just off the top of my head, for "interim" head coaches, (not in any specific order) Moss, Witt, Bennett or Van Pelt.

Did you ever heard about Peter's principle...

There is nothing to prove that any of them could be good (just good) HC, not to mention successful... You are not doing that in the beginning of the season, you are not doing that in the middle of the season. It is not that Mike McCarthy is doing that wrong. It is Aaron Rodgers who is bad in execution. Whatever are play calls, you can not pass over overthrown, underthrown, tossing behind, or completely missing players. It is not likely that nobody from offense are running right routes or does not know how to play. If Davante are playing so bad, why Aaron tossing ball most often to him? You are not changing good link, but broken link.

I'm sure every team has issues with 'chemistry', except the Patriots who win no matter what happens, but there have been several signs of cracking the past couple years and not just between Rodgers and MM. Lang, now the leader of the OL, just this week made comments about Aaron that would have been unthinkable a few years ago, no matter how innocuous . Rumors spread last year that MM was frustrated with TT's lack of willingness to sign veteran players to fill roster holes. The whole Sitton thing continues to baffle. Lacy being benched last year for curfew and basically being a lazy slob. Winning cures all, but if this team continues to struggle so will the finger pointing.

I think it started last season. Don't remember the game, but one play Lang started yelling at #12 since he didn't run the play as called or not fast enough... The Sitton thing really is baffling, but from all the comments, in my opinion it was because he is a vocal guy and wouldn't have had an issue calling out Rodgers. And I think management feared there was a potential for dividing the locker room, and it was not for Sitton being angry about the non extension talks. After all, these are good and proud players and want to win. If you hear for years that the whole O depends on #12 alone, and he plays like he did the past 12 months really then I think those guys are fed up at some point. Everybody needs to be held accountable, and that starts with #12.

Fact is, he isn't playing to the level he has before 2015, he is starting to pout like a certain Bears QB, but in interviews he also comes across as not thinking that anything he does is wrong. I truly feel that if that continues, MM has to put in QB2 at some point. Just move the chains.

To help you, it started after Broncos game, when Mike McCarthy took back play calling from Aarons best friend among coaches - Tom Clements. For me that looks like spoiled baby behavior...

Patriots win because they game plan to their players strengths and their opponents weaknesses. They don't expect Brisset to do the same things as Brady so they plan around Brissets strengths. Last year the Pack expected the WRS to do what Jordy did instead of adjusting to what they do well. If Arodge went down I'm sure Hudley and or Callahan would be expected to run the same stuff as Rodgers. The reason the PAck won it all in 2010 is because they adjusted to the players that were available when injuries hit, they didn't just march out the same thing and expect the same results like they have been dong since then...

That is where I think McCarthy needs to be better. To use the players strengths more.

After watching that Pats vs Texans game I can not defend our offensive coaches at all. No excuses. All of that timing, chemistry, trust, and other sh*t should be thrown out of the window, IMO. That Texans Defense is no joke (well, it probably is for now until their next game), but I could NOT believe what I was seeing. Watt and Clowney were non-factors and the Pats stuck with their running game KNOWING the Texans would force a 3rd string QB to beat them.

People are paid to do a job. Some are paid a lot more than others. I'm sure all of us know if we do our jobs poorly, the shit will hit the fan. I think this fair criticism of AR will do him and the team a world of good. Hopefully the chip will be back.

"No offense, but you guys are predictable," Rodgers said

I don't understand what he was expecting. No one should be paid 20 million for the numbers from his last 16 games.

They've been together as coach/qb for a long time. In any period of time, there's going to be disagreements and ups an downs for the relationship. It's possible that one or the other may at times turn around & tune out for a while. But one thing I don't believe is that either one would allow a "spat" to affect the job they do. Maybe McCarthy is stubborn in his belief in the system. Maybe Rodgers occasionally disagrees with the play calling. But neither one is willing to sacrifice a win for a personal disagreement.

Right now, if there's an argument, I'd have to give McCarthy the benefit of the doubt. He's watching a lot of moving parts and he's even incorporated some "man beaters" and other wrinkles into the offense he's otherwise hasn't changed. Rodgers, on the other hand, has said "I feel pretty good about my fundamentals", but the tape indicates he should feel less than good about them. He isn't going through progressions (missing who's open), feeling pressure that isn't there. But most unlike him, showing poor footwork, throwing off his back foot, all arm instead of driving the ball off his front foot.

If the coach/qb relationship is suffering, Rodgers is the guy who needs to reach out. Mainly by asking "what do you see, what do I need to play better?"

Zach, this is a great column to stir up thoughts by the fans but this question is ridiculous if only to rehash all the speculation that has already been made. These are professionals and we should not speculate what happens behind the scenes. Any true competitor should show emotion good or bad. A few wins will shut this talk down. Here's to some more wins!

Your contributions are appreciated.

I have to admit I have wondered about this more this year then I have in the past. But we have no real way of knowing.

Just hoping that everyone gets on the same page and we start seeing the team we are used to seeing.

<> Could their relationship be faltering and ultimately causing more problems for an offense that is already lacking efficiency?

A: I don't think so. Frustrations are bound to occur when expectations aren't met, but those two have tremendous respect for one another.

<> Will McCarthy return for the 2017 season if the Packers make a playoff run?

A: Duh, of course.

<> If not, what would be the win cut-off total that would ultimately result in McCarthy losing his job?

A: There is no win cut-off that would lead to McCarthy losing his job. With regards to his job security McCarthy is one of the safest coaches in the league.

Btw, these are just silly overreaction questions.

Um, assuming no injury to AR or other rash of injury, is there a cut off?
6 wins?
7 wins?
8 wins?
10 wins? Might be some agitation if that does not mean playoffs.

I think we are both assuming that GB will win enough games to make this point moot (11 to 12 wins). 6 wins probably does it. 8 wins is a maybe. I am not entirely sure that in the event of a meltdown, it would be MM that goes alone.

The MM and AR relationship has been a long term successful relationship. Like any other relationship, personal, professional, employer/employee there will be times of tension, but as professionals I expect that MM and AR could/should work it out. If anything MM should be disappointed with how AR has been playing and should let him know about and what he can do to correct it. Conversely, AR should be pointing out to MM his thoughts on how to make the offense more productive. I need to believe that these discussions take place in a professional manner during film review and game planning sessions. If not, (and we'll never know) then the relationship is damaged. I do not think that is the case. Rodgers looks like a guy who is trying to do too much. The question is why? MM needs to help him settle in and take what the defense is giving him. AR needs a solid game and begin to get his groove back. That should happen back at Lambeau this week. AR still has the physical skills, he just needs to snap out of whatever mental funk he's been in. As for won/lost record concerning MM I would say anything under.500 and he's done but it also depends on why. If Rodgers and others major players are lost for the season MM can't control that. But if the team stays healthy and under performs it's another story. I still believe that if healthy this team should go 12-4. They just have better players than most of their upcoming opponents. Just go out execute and win the one on ones. They will be fine. Thanks, Since '61

Why would anybody hire a carcass like coughlin? He isn't unemployed because he chose to retire. The giants forced him out for mcadoo, a packers coach. He interviewed for Philly and they chose pedersen a packer guy who worked under ried, another packer guy. I know coughlin was a WR coach with the packers for a minute in the 80's but i think his rings came from the defensive lines he had. With that I can't give him that much credit. His message is stale. This is a game of youth now.

The steelers didn't fire Tomlin when they went 8-8 two seasons in a row. When you have a dynamic duo like Brees/Payton, Roethlisberger/Tomlin, Belechek/Brady you don't break it up over a few bumps in the road.

I think Rodgers knows McCarthy has lost imagination as a coach, and doesn't trust his scheme, particularly the offensive side of it. Deep down Rodgers isn't a bad guy, and of course they are paying him a ton of money, so he mostly goes along with things in the press and presents a good image. I watch NE vs. Houston and what I see is a coach that is light years better than MM. Tough for me to admit, but I am a realist and an objective observer of the game. What that coach in NE is doing is HOF level stuff. It makes me jealous because I thought over time, this is what we'd have with MM. I think this very well could be the last year for the coach in GB. I think it's time for a change and this will become obvious as the year goes on. Mark my words, because I'll eat them if I am wrong, but I think it's going to be a tough, 3-5 years in GB.

I think the bigger question is how's the relationship w/ the HC and QB coach and Off Coor. Those three determine what the offense looks like on a week to week basis. If they aren't on the same page, no way will Rodgers be the QB he should be.

I've been pretty critical of MM, AR, and TT, but I think we need to wait for this week. DET has one of the worst defenses around. If we can't do some serious damage against them, then we really should worry.

It seems quite likely that Rodgers is having a problem with his eyesight and depth perception. This is not uncommon after concussions. He has the pocket presence and the arm strength but his throws are seldom on target. Also, he used to scan the field for open receivers but now seems to follow with his eyes the player he intends to throw to. Unfortunately, the defense backs on the opposition team are also following his eyes so it is very difficult for Packer receivers to get open. I can't believe the coaching staff have not noticed this.

No matter how good a player is he needs an occasional kick in the rump' There are comments that AR has lost some basic fundamentals. If so, MM needs to remind AR of that. Can MM do that or is AR too "big" for him, now? Even Bart Starr took criticism from VL.
