Packers QB History is Repeating

Credit QB Guru Tom Clements

After Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers hurt his hand against the New York Giants and it was clear he wasn’t healthy enough to lift the team around him to victory, I suggested in this column that they place Mr. Rodgers on injured reserve and see what they have in quarterback Jordan Love.

How did people respond? Some people threatened to physically remove me from the state and suggested I was Desperate For Clicks.

What do they mean? If you read my next column, I’ll throw in FREE GINSU KNIVES!!!!

I didn’t write it because I had anything against Rodgers; rather, it seemed that history was repeating itself. In 2003, when former Packers quarterback Brett Favre broke his thumb by banging it on a helmet and tried to play through it, things didn’t go well. This year, Rodgers has a broken thumb and the predictable results have followed. Neither Favre nor Rodgers played terribly—they just weren’t their usual selves.

Point here is, we discussed in that earlier column how an injury to Favre led to Rodgers getting a chance in a big game against a great team and, eerily, it happened 15 years ago nearly to the day for Love, against a powerhouse NFC East team, and their stats were similar:

November 29, 2007, Packers at Cowboys

Aaron Rodgers: 18 completions in 26 attempts, 201 yards, 1 touchdown, no interceptions, long of 43 yards, 104.8 rating.

November 27, 2022, Packers at Eagles

Jordan Love: 6 completions in 9 attempts, 113 yards, 1 touchdown, no interceptions, long of 63, 146.8 rating.

Will Love go on to be the Packers’ third consecutive NFL Hall of Fame quarterback in a row?

None of us know for sure. What we do know is:

  1. The film of Love last night against a top defense is gold to the Packers front office.
    • Games are different from practices.
    • Coach LeFleur said they have confidence in Love, but admitted doing it in games is different.
    • General manager Brian Gutekunst has said many times he wants to see what happens when the lights come on and it’s live action.

  2. The quarterback coach means a lot.
    • Rodgers himself credits Packers quarterbacks coach Tom Clements with improving his mechanics and fundamentals from the ground up, and said postgame that’s the biggest improvement he’s seen in Love’s play.
    • Talent is required, but greatness is formed by practicing fundamentals correctly.

  3. Quarterbacks can’t catch their own passes. (Unless it’s Favre’s first—to himself.)
    • Rodgers had wide receiver Greg Jennings back in 2007; Love has Christian Watson now.
    • If they end up with a top-10 draft pick, and they currently have the eighth overall, they could add Quentin Johnson, the TCU receiver who is 6’4 and runs a reported 4.4 40-yard dash, to bookend with Watson.
    • Romeo Doubs and Samori Toure flashed potential, too.

Those are three promising factors if Love gets to play in the large metallic monolith they call Lambeau Field. Maybe lightning really will strike thrice.

But first, GINSU KNIVES!

It would be nice to think Clements is a factor in Love’s growth. That would justify the hire.

There really will never be a true way of ever knowing how much Clements made a difference but it doesn't really matter. What matters is Love has been willing to put in the extra work and time in the 'lab' and the game has slowed down for him. To me it all starts there before anything else. You can have great fundamentals but if you do not fully understand the game, the offense, and what the defense is throwing at you the fundamentals will be the first thing that falls apart when pressured. The mere fact Jordan Love is working hard behind the scenes is very encouraging.

1. Love unwisely given, brings sorrow. So they transferred the film from mm to High definition. How many frames are missing?
2. Clements also wanted Rodgers to reach another Super-bowl.
3. They could add a Wr. But they won’t. Especially if Rodgers comes back.
But First: The refs have it in for the Green Bay Packers. Don’t expect them to call pass interference Calls. The next Wr better be a vacuum.

It was great to see Love play so well, but kind of bittersweet because of Rodgers' onerous contract, which will make it hard to get rid of him after this year, even if management actually wants to do it. Tom Silverstein said in his game blog that he thinks a trade is not out of the question, if they can find a team who wants Rodgers and has a lot of cap room. Too bad Rodgers is going to play until the Packers are mathematically eliminated. I want to see more of Love. With so many mediocre teams, it could take a few more games to get mathematically eliminated.

Love was so much more fun to watch. He is very smooth. Rodgers still has moments of brilliance, but most of the time he makes everything look complicated and difficult. And I wouldn't be surprised if many of his teammates are sick of him.

I am mostly excited about the future of the Packers. But it will come at a price, to me. When I saw Love toss it to Watson for a TD, there will be many more in the future I fear. I am feeling it already in my shoulders and knees... 10 to 9tis that is....

This was nice. I had noticed the similarities, too. I remember Rodgers coming in when we were at Dallas, behind, and he played really well, and you could see that you could play with this guy at QB. Of course, if Favre hadn't thrown away the season that year, he'd have been back in 2008 and a big freakin' hero., and Rodgers would have probably been traded. True Fact.

There was a good article in Spotrac today that cap-wise,we could keep the hit down to $40 million spread over two years by trading him. He doesn't have a no trade clause and it really doesn't matter as much what we got for him because the primary benefit is cap relief. If he chose to retire instead of playing in Cleveland, that works too.

IMO, we're about to see the last 5 games of Rodgers' career in Green Bay. He's kind of beaten up, we're out of contention, it's cold. And a bunch of the fans would like to see him on the sideline, while they cheer a younger, healthier QB. That's a tough stretch of road. I'm 99% confident that he won't be back here next year.

"IMO, we're about to see the last 5 games of Rodgers' career in Green Bay."

In your opinion, where is Rodgers going?

It's been reported he doesn't have a no trade cause, but in reality, he does.
Rodgers could nix a trade with one of his famous facial expressions.

A team isn't going to invest in him if they know he doesn't want to be there.

The article from sportrac is the one i linked in here so people could get educated.

I'm 99.99999999999999999999% sure Rodgers isn't going anywhere.
Why would he go somewhere new, have to start over learning a new offense, learning rapport with his team mates to play one year...maybe 2?

Plus...he's guaranteed 59.5 million next season in Green Bay if he stays, or if they cut him.

That's the team's fault, not Rodgers

Rodgers is going nowhere.

You may be right, but if you are, nor is this team and it’s leadership may well sorely regret it. Their incompetence and self, delusion would be shown to know of bounds or simply that they are just in it to keep their jobs and destroying their reputations in the process. It would be better for Rodgers to take the money and run. Be careful what you wish for. The past isn’t coming back.

As to your figures, that’s a false shield. We can trade for close to the cost of keeping him post June 1. We just likely won’t get much more than a somewhat improved future cap hole.

Cold....this train ran off the tracks in 2020.
The Packers missed a golden opportunity

They decided to move on from Rodgers and drafted Love.
Rodgers said trade me...So...trade him then and get serious draft resources and...fix the salary cap hemorrhaging at the same time. That was the right play.
If that happened, none of this would be going on, and Love would be starting his 3rd season.

BUT....the Packers change their minds, and decide to keep Rodgers and keep Love over there on the bench.

Then....the Packers take a heaping 💩right on Jordan Love's face by giving Rodgers 3 years and 150 million.
In essence...putting Love on the bench for a total of at least 4 years.

This team has been run horribly wrong, and it starts from the top down, not from Rodgers down.

So many people here have their anger and emotions directed at Rodgers.

NEWSFLASH: Rodgers doesn't run the team...he doesn't make football operation decisions.
Does that help?

But hell....lets all keep whining and crying about Rodgers...it's what Packer fans do best in here.

LH,
I believe Rodgers has worn out his welcome with everyone other than maybe LF. The front office from Murphy to Gutey absolutely must be exhausted with the Rodgers ongoing saga. Obviously many fans including me are feeling the same way. I totally agree about how Rodgers indecision with the ball is in stark comparison to Love's quick releases on time. Think about how weird that is right? Rodgers has 18-years experience. Just mind blowing odd!

Unfortunately covid happened and Love lost his rookie year. Ever stop to think that If Love had not lost his rookie year and moved his talent and skill set up one year prior to Rodgers being resigned what might have happened? Would Rodgers have been traded and the Packers not being in cap hell, and possibly having multiple top #1 and #2 draft choices, and young talented players like Fant at TE on the team. How the fortunes of the Packers would be exponentially different.

I too feel pretty strongly that Rodgers will not be back with the Packers in 2023. If Love continues to show talent and promise the Packers and Rodgers will obviously have to set down and talk this offseason. I'm confident Rodgers will not retire for several more years but I also know Rodgers is un-willing to set on the bench behind Love just to pick up a salary. If Rodgers knows there will be open competition at QB in camp I believe he will be open to a trade. Unfortunately, in this scenario Rodgers will once again have the upper hand with the front office meaning if he goes anywhere any bounty in draft choices/players will be significantly reduced because Rodgers would want to be in total control handpicking where he might go as the offense would need to have big time talent to ensure his legacy. Rodgers like Favre being ultimate competitors will want to show the Packer organization/fan base and the rest of the NFL he still has it and the Packer front office screwed up by trading him. Let's hope for all parties Rodgers is traded and hopefully the trade works out well for both the Packer organization, as well as for Rodgers. I want Rodgers gone as I am tired of the drama and diva. Hopefully the team can squeeze a 1st round selection from someone. Rodgers will always be a Packer and his name will end up in the ring of honor, so I would wish him the best and hope he plays well through retirement.

Really....covid happened?

Love didn't lose his rookie year to covid, he was 3rd string because he couldn't beat out Tim Boyle.
The Packers never activated Love through the whole season. They could have moved Love to #2 QB at ANY time.

I hope that after we are eliminated - which might not be this weekend. But could be during the bye week we see Love play and he plays a lot. We probably will sign him for his 5th year option. People say that the contract will be debilitating - totally disagree. We currently are paying him $12 million per year - it is expected because he hasnt played much and wont go over the 50% threshold that the 5th year option will cost only an extra 7 Mill. Now paying AR and Love is expensive but look what San Fran did with Jimmy G. So basically a good contract and some other cap casualties and vets leaving will be in order. Plus we will be picking near the top of the class and will get some great instant talent And between Amos Cobb Abram and Lowry can save a lot of money and Lewis will probably retire plus re-sign Lazard as well as Jenkins and maybe Tonyon.

I would like to see him start at Lambeau against the Rams and then go to Miami and finish with the last 2 games in Lambeau. We then will see what we have. This might just give us the opportunity to trade AR if he wants and get going with Love and hopefully it will be unlike the Favre fiasco. AR may have some querks that I dont like but he also has some past grievances back to the TT/MM days for not having the type of support that guys like Brady and now Mahommes and even Big Ben got from their organizations when in their prime.

BBBBuutt - we need a Kelce or a Kittle or somebody like that Tonyon has lost a step and he never did what Kittle and Kelce do - break tackles and run over guys. Even during his hey day run - he was kinda forgotten by the defenses and walked mostly untouched into the end zone. But since Lewis will probably retire and Deguara never did develop into the Kelce Kittle Hback type - we still need that. Our rooks will all be dynamic next year especially Doubs and Watson.

Exactly what I have been thinking as I read through everyone's takes. As we now see the time has come to make some major improvements on offense. We not only need that deep threat WR or two. Next draft, along with Doubs, Toure? But we MUST finally find a fast tight end, ideally one that likes to run over people! It's just not football without that threat over the middle. That will also do wonders for the Offensive line.

We need 2-3 super duper WR's...Always. We need at least 2 Weapons on offense and a very good #2 WR and a solid TE. Doubs may be a very good #2 and possibly a #1 WR. I think he becomes a good possession WR doing more of the dirty work and Watson becomes the big play machine he already is. A. Jones is the other Weapon and should be pretty good the next few seasons. We have no TE's that move the needle. The main thing I have noticed is WHEN...Not IF our running game get's shut down against stout Defenses like SF and Bucks is we never had a #2 WR after DA and A. Jones was not used enough in the pass game to alter the inevitable outcome we have seen every year. That's a fact...At least in GB.

Yes!

Believe we all know what the Packers have in Watson and Doubs. Unfortunately we don't really have a handle on Toure. I believe the talent is there but since Rodgers brought up the Captain Casual thing I believe it is important for Toure to play extensively the rest of the year. I have said this several times....the Packers still need one more top end WR, and at least one very good TE, and possibly two TE's. If Love is going to be the starting QB next year I can see Gutey wanting to provide Love with all the talent necessary to ensure success for Love, particularly since his legacy is tied to Love's success. With all the defensive needs on that side of the ball at every level how do you decide?

For me it is very clear....IF Love continues to show the talent he displayed against Philly I would be interested to see if the Packers can get Rodgers to agree to a trade for everyone's benefit. With his cap hit and all the acrimony (and cap) between player and organization I struggle to see a receiving team give up much more for him. I could see a 1st rounder for him if he indicates he will play for several more years. I am not confident there would be much more given up for Rodgers at this point. The Packers let that opportunity slip by last offseason. However, that extra 1st round draft choice would really go a long way in addressing the teams needs in the draft.

Mayer is moving up to #6 - #8 range in some mocks. He would be the target. The Pack will need to draft two or three more TEs just to fill the depth chart after blowing the third round and missing out on the fourth round haul of TEs in 2022. With Stokes out for half of the 2023 season Joey Porter,Jr is another prospect.

I would like them to keep Lewis; he is still an excellent blocking TE and could teach the other TEs about blocking, and is a big locker-room voice. They could probably get him on a veteran minimum deal for next year. After that, he'll probably retire. Deguara I think is a keeper at TE. They can probably use late-round picks and maybe sign some UDFA TEs.

I assumed Douglas would play at CB opposite Alexander, but he seems to be declining. Would better coaching fix him? I never really thought about CB being a top need of the Packers

I am projecting that we will get the #8 overall pick once the season is over. Also, I see Rodgers being traded to the Jets in the offseason for a first-round pick and a fourth-round pick. The Jets are a team with a super-bowl caliber roster that is being held back by a terrible QB. With a better O-line, exceptional weapons, and a strong running game (not to mention being fully healthy) there is reason to believe Rodgers can play well again for the Jets. Also, if the Broncos can give up 2 1sts for Russell Wilson, then a first and a 4th should be a bargain for a 4x MVP future HOF QB. That would give us, according to my projections, the 8th overall and 18th overall picks in the first round.

With the 8th pick, I would like us to draft TE Michael Mayer. See my comment below for why With the 18th, I think we should draft Florida State EDGE Jared Verse. Preston I think will be traded in the offseason, and our pass rush has been abysmal mostly in this season. Having a trio of Gary, Verse, and Enagbare would have the potential to develop into a top trio.

I don't know if it will happen but I'm certainly hoping that history is repeating itself. I think that it's way too early to claim that it will happen or that Love is ready yet. But I'd like to see the Packers help it along by having Love play for the remainder of the season.

I don't see the Packers reaching the point where they are paying Rodgers $50 million and Love $20 million in the same season. $70 million on any position including the QB position is ridiculous. So if the Packers decide to take on Love's extension for his 5th season that is probably as sign that there are moving on from Rodgers one way or another.

Before any of this can happen the Packers need to see if Love can be the guy or not. IMO the remainder of this season is the perfect opportunity for the Packers to make the necessary assessment of Love because they have nothing to lose.
The more information that management can acquire before making a major decision the better. The Packers have a golden opportunity to acquire information they need to make a decision on Love. They should jump all over the opportunity. Thanks, Since '61

San Fran is paying that $43 for Lance plus all the incentive laden money that Jimmy is making. I am sure that something can be worked out - especially when you write if off over several years because that is what would happen if you trade one or the other and dont have anything else around - imagine San Fran without Jimmy - more lucky than good planning especially if you have a guy with Jimmy's demeanor. Does Love have that demeanor??

Since, I'm sure that Jordan Love, if become starter will have some bad games. Some DC will find some soft spots in his performance and use it to their advantage. That is why it is important for Packers and Jordan Love to play as much as he can. Because what we saw in this 3 seasons with Love, that he really learning from his own mistakes. That is the sign of person who will not blame others for his own failures, but work and correct them to perfect his crafts.

Only question I still have is where is his upper level he can reach. We all hope it is very, very high. Because he did nothing else but showing substantial improvements every time we had chance to see him play.

I am in total agreement Since61.

I think all of us are thinking how dreadful potentially having 2 very good QB's due to the cap hit. However, I think we should change our outlook a little to that of how fortunate the Packers are. How many teams would like to have 2 excellent QB's? The question is who might the Packers trade and how much might they get in exchange for them? Common sense says Rodgers would get traded at his salary and his complexities/drama, but Rodgers always seems to get the upper-hand with management. While I would think highly unlikely might Love's performance the rest of the year simply be showcasing his talent to the highest bidders?

You are assuming that they are rational actors. Everything they’ve done suggests otherwise. I think they will try to double down to save the day despite that being obviously nonsensical. I think they have departed into an internal reality fueled by their own reinforcement and lack of any internal source of correction/ injection of reality.

I think we’ve worse to come from Murphy and co and one sign of that will be Rodgers playing on Sunday.

In my season projections, I have the Packers ending up with the 8th overall selection. However, I don't think they should get Johnston; 2022 was his only big year of production. Instead, they should get another weapon at a position they haven't had an impact player at forever: I think they should draft TE Michael Mayer of Notre Dame. He is an excellent receiver (who leads Notre Dame in receptions and receiving yards I believe) with soft hands, an enormous catch radius, is a down field threat, and is an all-effort blocker. He would be the best player the Packers have had at TE since Jermichael Finley, and probably eventually would be even better then that.

To really maximize Watson and Doubs they need an excellent TE to keep the defense honest. Ultimately, I believe the Packers defensive talent is there but is more of a scheme and coaching issue. If/when the Packers get an extra 1st round pick (possibly a 2nd rounder too) in 2023 for either Rodgers/Love there are many ways the Packers could go with those extra draft choices. If armed with 2 first rounders and possibly one very high it wouldn't surprise me to see Gutey fall back with one of them and pick up an additional pick say in round 2. With the defensive needs (DL, Safety, Edge) I still in this scenario would be totally fine using two first round picks to take a WR & TE to load up the talent on that side of the ball before using day 2 picks, and early day 3 picks on the defensive side of the ball.

The performance of Love and Toure the rest of the year is going to allow the Packer organization to make some big decisions. Either way, I suspect the Packers are going to have at minimum two first round selections in the 2023 draft, which will really help strengthen the team moving forward.

Since you mentioned the draft, here are a couple of my favorite draft prospects heading into 2023:
- TE Michael Mayer, Notre Dame. The Packers could finally solve the TE position and get Jordan Love another weapon for the future if they were to get Mayer, who led the Irish in receptions and receiving yards. He is an exceptional receiver and hard-working blocker. If the Packers end up in the top 10, they should 100% get him.
- EDGE Jared Verse, Florida St. Verse somewhat reminds me of Rashan Gary. He is a raw pass rusher with enormous upside and great athleticism (4.59 40). However, he has the college production to go along with it, collecting 7.5 sacks with the Seminoles (and a blocked FG, too). He has an incredible first step off the LOS and long arms to get under the pads of Tackles. Reminds me somewhat of Micah Parsons. I see him as a mid-late first rounder. I see Preston Smith being traded in the offseason, and for the most part, the Packers' pass rush has been downright bad. Enagbare has been encouraging, but you can never have too many good pass-rushers. A trio of Gary, Verse, and Enagbare would have the potential to become one of the league's best.
- TE Darnell Washington, Georgia. Washington is a MONSTER at TE at 270 pounds, yet moves quickly and fluidly and is very tough to tackle. He is a great receiver and oustanding after the catch, and can block the snot out of defenders.
- OG O'Cyrus Torrence, Florida. If the Packers decide to move on from Elgton Jenkins, I see Torrence as the best replacement. He is nearly 350 pounds yet moves well and plays with a mean streak in the run game.
- S JL Skinner, Boise St. At 6'4 and 220 pounds, Skinner is a force at safety. He is a hard-hitting, secure tackler and has flashed incredible ball skills and turnover-creating ability. Safety may be the Packers' largest need in '23, and Skinner could fill that.
- WR A.T. Perry, Wake Forest. I don't see Allen Lazard returning, but Perry is as close as you can get to Lazard. They are both 6'5 and have similar frames and both excel in making contested catches. With his high blocking upside, the Packers should especially be interested in him come draft time.

If I were the FO I would franchise-tag-trade Jenkins (like what we did with Adams this past offseason). A large contract extension would hamper the ability of the Front Office to make extra cap moves in the next few years, when we are contending again. Besides, there should be plenty of demand for a premier O-lineman; I should think we could get about a 2nd-round pick for him.

Tag him and you have to get that tag under a cap we are already over. Regardless of the wisdom of trading him, that seems unlikely

Packy,
Thanks for the draft conversation as this is a topic I never get enough of. I love the strategy and planning when it comes to the draft. As I mentioned above, I strongly believe the Packers will have 2 first rounders next year....and will go out on a limb possibly two 2nd rounders. Whether the extra 2nd rounder is in addition to a 1st rounder for one of the Packer QB's I think Gutey very well could trade back in the 1st round with one of the draft choices to pick-up an additional 2nd rounder if the talent doesn't match up with the draft choice. A nice fantasy is having two 1st rounders and three 2nd round selections which would really help plugging the MANY holes this team has on its roster.

We all know they gave the farm to Rodgers and Love knows it too. Rodgers will go on the field in crutches to keep Love from replacing him and LOve must know that too. I could see Love telling the pack adios, thanks for the money and development Im moving on aka MVS, Adams etc.
He can walk out the door with Gary who will not sign a new contract he wants out too

*Quentin Johnston (Not Johnson) 6'4" or 5" 215 lbs and blazing fast...

He's been a crush of mine for a while now.

I don't know his character or anything, but unless there is someone better at #8 Overall, I'd jump if I were the GM. Alas, I'm not, so Gutey will overthink it and % it up sure as shit... (Hope not though!)

With a QB trade in the offseason there is a good chance the Packers have 2 first round selections. If Love is the Packer QB in 2023 I would not be surprised with a WR selected high. Gutey wants/needs Love to be successful for obvious reasons. Plus, he just might enjoy doing it to piss off AR. LOL!

However, having two 1st round selections will allow Gutey the flexibility/opportunity to nab a WR in round one. I would 'love' to see a WR in round 1 to give Jordan Love every opportunity to be a success.

Since75,
You consistently and with sarcasm (your words) bring up the fact Love had only 6 completions, and that he only played 3 minutes and something like 9 seconds. I understand you are of a mindset you need/want a much bigger data point reference before making a decision whether Love is the real deal (all of us feel the same). From my interpretation of your posts I sense you are a huge Rodger fan and you really do not want Love to start/play the rest of the year. I'm sensing contradictions in your writing. Am I reading you correctly? If not, I apologize and would like for you to share and explain exactly where you stand regarding allowing Love to start/play the rest of the year, so you do have a larger data reference point for a proper evaluation of Love.

Here is what I know and will add to what Chris is pointing out....Rodgers was drafted with the 24th pick in round 1, while the Packers traded a 4th round selection to move up to the 26th pick in round 1 to draft Love. Everyone has to admit there are strong similarities with draft selections. Chris points out in year 3 for both of them their performance/stats in big games were very similar. When comparing their ages at the time of those games, the draft selections, and their performance against strong teams there are a lot of similarities no matter how you slice it. Based on those similarities could Jordan Love be on a similar trajectory path to the HOF? Of course none of us know how good Jordan Love will end up being, but it is sure fun based on his Philly performance to contemplate while in the middle of a dreadful season. Why playing Love the rest of the year is imperative to help management/Gutey make very important offseason decisions. Gutey needs a bigger data reference point on Love like we all do. Please share and explain exactly where you stand regarding allowing Love to start/play the rest of the year as it would help all of us understand your position and exactly where you are coming from. Thanks!

The problem is that Rodgers wants to play until they are mathematically eliminated even with a broken thumb and banged up ribs. That could be 2 or 3 games that Love could play and develop. Rodgers is a me first guy that won't do what's best for the team and that means sitting his ass down cause his play for the most part has been deplorable. I hope that they are able to unload this prima donna in the offseason.

Well....then maybe Murphy and Gute have to grow a pair, be men, and run the team....like they get paid to do.

But keep whining and crying about Rodgers 24/7 365......hope ya'll have enough tissues.
Waa...wa...waa...waaa.

We really need to see more of Love before we crown him, but the little bit we saw in Philly looked MUCH IMPROVED over 2021, and really that's all we need to see. Improvement.

So Love doesn’t play until the last game when they are mathematically eliminated. Check the schedule and who they’re up against. What a wasted year.

MLF says AR sit down and heal up…but that requires a pair. Confirming he has none but is supposed to be a motivator, leader, and respected visionary…NOT

You could more or less back this up even one more, when Favre took over for an injured Majikman... I'm not a stat guy, but Brett never gave the seat up after that.
