Packers Practice Round-Up. Day 6. August 2, 2018.

Practice Round-Up.  Day 6.  August 2, 2018.

Injuries, Usage, Formations/Personnel

  • Packers DL Mike Daniels returned to practice today.  APC
  • CB Quinten Rollins says he's lined up as the nickel corner, the dime corner and as a safety so far in camp. Zero reps on the perimeter. Cohen
  • the league's new rules for 2018 [makes] the type of hit Anthony Barr had on Aaron Rodgers in Week 6 now a penalty.  Cronin
  • A couple times now the #Packers have used Kendall Donnerson on an inside twist up the middle. He’s got a lot of speed bearing down on the quarterback. Cohen
  • With Jonathan Cyprien out for the season with what's believed to be a torn ACL, Titans reportedly have interest in bringing in free-agent safeties Eric Reid and Kenny Vaccaro. Edholm
  • Kevin King and Jaire Alexander on the perimeter, Josh Jackson in the slot, Jermaine Whitehead the dime, Josh Jones and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix at safety.  Cohen
  • Report: Packers have 'discussed' adding veteran LB NaVorro Bowman Packers Wire
  • McCarthy says ILB Ahmad Thomas has had a very strong start to camp. McCarthy likes his coverage ability, eager to see him perform on special teams. A name to watch behind Martinez and Burks.  Cohen
  • McCarthy says Lewis can still run and be a receiving target, but blocking is a real strength.  Wood
  • MM on Lewis: "His ability to cut off and anchor on a block and maintain at the line of scrimmage has been impressive. Frankly, we haven't really had that here with a man of his size and his ability."  Cohen
  • Kumerow getting a few reps with the 1s.  Nagler

Actual Plays: WRs/Pass Defense/QBs/RBs

  • We were all amazed by Rodgers' no-look TD to Allison. The receivers? Not so much. Alexander's reaction was brilliant. Packer report
  • Aaron Rodgers draws the [Biegel] offsides turns a free play into a 26-yard TD to Allison vs. Alexander. Oh, and 12 was looking at the left side of the field as he threw and hit Allison on the far right side.  Wilde
  • Davante Adams had two nice catches in drill. He’s been consistently good throughout camp. Silverstein’
  •  Backs with a couple of drops in passing drill. Ripkowski on ball across the middle and Jamaal Williams on corner route in end zone.  Silverstein
  • Lenzy Pipkins with a nice break on crossing route and nearly picked off Tim Boyle.  Silverstein
  • Tramon Williams still got it. Hanging tight with arguably the fastest guy on the team, Trevor Davis, and breaks up pass in WR vs DB. EQ St. Brian has run some sharp routes too.  Hodkiewicz
  • Rodgers and Cobb connecting early in first team period. Emanuel Byrd also snagged nice pass from Hundley as well.  Hodkiewicz

Special Teams:

  • Crosby goes 5 for 8 on field-goal attempts Wilde
  • Two of the misses were with Zach Triner snapping and one with Hunter Bradley. There has been a light mist falling all practice. Silverstein
  • XP good, 36L good, 39R wide right, 41R good, 44M good, 47L wide right, 49L wide left, 52R good.  Wood
  • Trevor Davis was the best punt returner in the NFL last year.  84.2 grade.  PFF
  • JK Scott with some nice hang times. Had five punts of 4.8 seconds hang time, some with full rush, some with half rush. Punted a total of 15 times and only had two hang times under 4.4 seconds.  Silverstein
  • On eight punts, he averaged 52.9 yards and 4.56 hang time. Best one was a 60-yarder with 4.94 hang time.  Demovsky

The best I've heard so far is the punter....hard to beat those kicks!

Just seems like a lot of good news coming out of camp. I'm getting more and more jacked each day.

Overall, absolutely. Perhaps more importantly, the good news has been about some of the important players.

Keven King: One beat writer described his battles with Davante Adams as epic. If King can hang with Adams, he should be a big upgrade at CB.

Twill: ran step for step with Trevor Davis on a vertical. Sounds like he still has it.

Alexander: Beat writers note both the speed and burst. He isn't grabby because he can recover. A few down tweets, but lots of positive tweets.

Jmon Moore: Some nice plays. Reminds beat writers of Adams physically. Good quick cuts and routes.

Scott has been impressive. In a word: damn.

MVS and St. Brown has had a couple of mentions. So far, so good.

Very little on Donnerson and Looney. GB has been using Donnerson on inside stunts and they like his speed. Looney easily dominated Amichia in a one on one.

Bradley and Triner each have had 2 bad snaps in equal opportunities. Crosby missed both times on Triner's bad snaps, and made one of two of Bradley's bad snaps, though it was a low liner from 48 yds out.

Boyle and Kumerow have each gotten lots of positive tweets. Hard to say if it is enough to make the team but positive is positive.

Rollins had one rough day. Getting opportunities. He's gotten #1 reps at ILB, safety, and as the dime and nickel. He's fielded punts. Not sure what to make of Rollins.

M. Adams is 3-0 in 1 on 1s, though they were against "lesser competition." One or two other positive tweets, no negative ones.

Josh Jackson has been beaten a few times and is grabby. Not that surprising to me. He needs to use excellent technique and get good jams, like Al Harris. It is why I never thought of him as a first-round prospect. Doesn't mean he can't end up being good.

Jamaal Williams has had two drops. Kendricks had a drop or two as well. Graham and Lewis have been as advertised: huge with Lewis being a fine blocker. Spriggs has been getting all the #1 reps at RT.

I think Josh Jackson could easily become the type of guy that gets beat a few times, but if a team tries to go after Jackson too much, he's going to make that game-changing play and win us the game. We couldn't be too picky when we needed probably two starting CB's out of the Draft, too.

Kyle Murphy has more snaps with 1st OL than Spriggs! Check your data...

But, if you are talking just about Thursday practice, that is something else...

I've read every tweet provided on APC and Packers Wire since day one of practice. [I posted practice round-ups for the first four practices on APC. Doing them now here on CHTV.]

The one and only tweet I've read on Spriggs or Murphy is this one:

"Jason Spriggs taking bulk of first-team RT reps. Kyle Murphy gets one rep on first OL, then Spriggs right back in. Ryan Wood"

If you have evidence to the contrary, by all means, share it.

JK Scott has quickly created high expectations for me. I knew we'd probably be going after a Punter, so I looked them up before the Draft, and I actually thought JK Scott's hang time was going to make him the #1 Punter. These times aren't bad, but honestly, I think he can do better. He'll be hitting 5.0 sec hang time in no time. With the new rules, I think they play to Scott's punting style, too. It's nice that he was a Packers' fan growing up, too. He seems to be a real professional, but we'll see with time.

Very reassuring to hear he's kick the ball well under the pressure of full rush.

I was more than a little nervous that we cold released a punter who did a good job last year for a draftee sight-unseen. I was also concerned at 6'5" and with his long strides that he wasn't going to be able to get the ball off quick enough under the speed of the NFL punt rush.

I'm glad to hear he's booming them... consistently!

I'm loving what I'm reading so far. All I need to hear/see now is a couple of the young OLBs getting some good pressure against starting caliber OL!

I think we're going to go into the regular season still wondering how they're going to get pressure. Milk-toast game plans and a desire to keep looks off film in the preseason will likely keep us wondering until they open against the Bears. With that in mind, I just want to see this defense play fast and play with attitude in the preseason. For some reason I'm reminded of the old commercials with Robert Conrad where he dared people to knock the battery off his shoulder...
