Packers Practice Round-Up. Day 5. July 31, 2018.
This is a compilation of the tweets of various beat writers who actually attend practices. There is no editorializing. I encourage readers to pick out some of their favorites and follow them on twitter.
Injuries, Usage, Formations/Personnel
Did not practice for the Packers: Kentrell Brice (ankle); Aaron Jones (hamstring); Joe Kerridge (shoulder); Jake Ryan (knee); Nick Perry (ankle); C.J. Johnson (hamstring); Alex Light (ankle); Bryan Bulaga (knee); Mike Daniels (quad). Cohen
Kentrell Brice says "wasn’t as serious as it could have been." Demovsky
Ryan is still undergoing tests, but a source said the fear is a serious knee injury. As for S Kentrell Brice, X-Rays were negative for a break, but he’ll know his timetable when the swelling goes down. Rapoport
Here’s a really good sign: Bulaga doing footwork drills on the side. Wood
Oren Burks gets Jake Ryan’s reps at inside linebacker and Josh Jones on the field at safety where Kentrell Brice had been. GM Brian Gutekunst said this morning they were going to be patient with young guys and not go after vets at those spots.
Looks like Ahmad Thomas will get a look with Jake Ryan down. He got a first-team rep in nickel alongside Oren Burks. Wood
Packers still have no timeline on rookie Cole Madison reporting to training camp. Packers Wire
Formation: DL: Wilkerson Clark; LBs Fackrell, Martinez, Burks, CM3; 3 CBs, Jones and HHCD at safety. Wilde
Actual Plays: WRs/Pass Defense/QBs/RBs
Kizer with a beauty of a back-shoulder TD to Kumerow. Packer Report
Kumerow just put a double move on Tramon Williams that left the veteran grasping at air. Continues a really strong camp. Heilprin
Ty Montgomery and Tim Boyle botched an exchange in combo drill. Demovsky
Marwin Evans’ big hit in goal-line stops Devante Mays in his tracks. Silverstein
First TD of camp in a team period for the Aaron-Rodgers-to-Jimmy-Graham connection. It's a 1-yarder to finish the red zone period. Graham's massive reach seems unstoppable down there. Demovsky
Marwin Evans with perfect defense on play-action pass from Rodgers to Graham. Didn’t matter. TD for Graham, who is tall. Packer Report
House called for PI on fade to Jimmy Graham into end zone. Demovsky
Biegel drops what would’ve been Aaron Rodgers 8th INT of camp. Wood
Tough day for Josh Jackson. He’s really grabby, too. Cohen
Strong showing for Lenzy Pipkins, including tight coverage on Randall Cobb to force an incompletion and a nice jam on Jake Kumerow. Cohen
Very rough showing for Herb Waters. Cohen
Alexander has some sort of recovery speed. Packer Report
Jaire Alexander doesn’t panic. Have seen him get beat off the line but he’s got enough confidence in his speed not to grab and has a knack for making a play on the ball when does catch up. Impressive in 1-on-1s. Heilprin
Jamaal Williams remains the best RB in pass pro. Cohen
Oren Burks had a nice up-and-under move to beat Aaron Ripkowski. Cohen
Greer Martini continues to perform well [in one on one blitz pick up drills]. Cohen
Montgomery with ugly loss in one-on-one pass pro vs ILBs but recovers with solid win. Hughes at 259 is a monster. Good move by Burks to win. Packer Report
Special Teams:
Draft pick Hunter Bradley has had two bad snaps in eight FG attempts. One high and one low. [That means over all 5 practices.] Silverstein
Mason Crosby went 7-8 on field goals, mirroring his mark from Saturday. 4 snaps for Triner and 4 for Bradley. Same as Saturday’s practice. Wood [Crosby 14/16 so far]
Only miss was off low snap from Hunter Bradley. Hit from 32, 37, 39, 41, 43, 47 and 51. Missed wide right from 49. Silverstein
Lines - Defense and Offense
On 2 goal line runs, Wilkerson dropped Williams on a wide run and two players later M Adams stuffed Ripkowski on run up middle. Dougherty
Muhammad Wilkerson batted down a pass at the line of scrimmage and hit Aaron Rodgers with the Dikembe Mutombo finger wag. Dougherty

Now I can editorialize. The player who has most exceeded expectations is Kumerow. As one poster (gvtspook) called him, Kumerow-Uno.
2nd Place: Boyle
If you had to pick one of the #Packers backup QBs who has been most impressive it’s Eastern Kentucky rookie Tim Boyle. Has a rocket arm and has put it on the money in team drills. Silverstein
[Just because these two have vastly exceeded expectations doesn't mean I expect or that Kumerow or Boyle have done enough to make the 53-man roster. Probably both are long shots. Just keep an eye on them and don't be surprised to see them get some snaps in preseason games.
Coolest Tweet - Day 2 Practice Round up:
Pettine playing QB in the team defense walk through. Haven’t seen that before. No throwing, just ordering offensive guys to shift to see how defense reacts. Silverstein
I love this tweet. Pettine has the offense shift, motion, etc., to see if the defenders react correctly/know their assignments. No beat writer had ever seen a defensive coach do this. It is the single thing that most encourages me about Pettine so far.

That news about Pettine sounds really cool. I would love to see that in person. Thanks for sharing.

TGR, I second '61 on the thanks for the update. I don't do/follow twitter so I appreciate this information. I just love the one about Pettine at QB (I picture that ornery/at rest face of his in the offensive backfield pointing and directing). Beautiful!

I plan to compile the tweets of the beat writers for each open practice until the regular season begins and put them into articles. Since there are 10 more open practices, I expect to publish 10 more of these type of articles.
I try not to use any bias in deciding which tweets to include; I used most of the ones I found that aren't ads or just duplicate what another beat writer tweeted.

I coached for 20 years and yes...Ron Wolf turned me down for a job. Even the great Ron Wolf occassionally made mistakes. LOL!
Love what Pettine did today in practice. What a great way to teach his defense. Awesome! Going to like this guy!
