Packers Place Sam Shields on IR.

News just broke that the Packers are making room for new RB Knile Davis by putting CB Sam Shields on Injured reserve. Shields has not improved to the liking of the Packers doctors and with this being the fifth concussion of his career they are rightfully trying to get him guaranteed full rest.

Shields announced the news on his Instagram account and reportedly also said he hopes to play again this year.  Shields wrote:

"I'm making great progress and hope to come back in 8 weeks and play this season. I will make a full recovery within that time frame. #gopackgo"

Better safe than sorry with the concussions. Wish him a healthy 8 weeks and then look forward to seeing him contribute during our march through the playoffs.

Al's right. These brain injuries are happening more frequently and with increased severity. Putting him on the field again is ignoring something that the league is trying to live-down. It is too bad - he's a heck of a player.

Agreed, a free agent who "earned" a top of the market contract extension and a great guy in the locker room to boot, approaching Pro Bowl talent level, it would be a shame if he could not play again. I like to be positive even with the recent injuries and the real Aaron Rodgers no where in sight but Doug in Sandpoint is talking PLAYOFFS. Time to cue up Jim Mora Sr. on PLAYOFFS, PLAYOFFS !!!!!

I wouldn't be surprised if they IR'd Starks to bring up Jackson.

There is talks of Lacy might not be able to play Thursday. They would be down to only 1 RB and that is Davis who they just picked up today.

I posted this on the other thread but I think it really needs to be changed.

Shields' injury is yet another reason why the NFL has to adjust its IR rules. It is handcuffing teams because they have only 1 spot on IR that they can bring someone back. Shields for example would have been nice to put on a temporary DL list, until they knew how long he was going to be out for. They could have used that roster spot the last 4 weeks. Its time the NFL adjusts its rules.

With the number of injuries and concussions going up each year, and the NFL going for 'player safety', its time to allow more players to be put on an injury list, that can return at a later date.

I totally agree. I think they're afraid of teams manipulating it for roster moves, but I think if they made it so that anyone on there has to sit out four weeks, that would be useful but also not prone to manipulation for week-to-week roster moves.

I agree. I think that is why they do it. Wasn't it back in the day the Redskins or someone used to do that? Stash players away? It was before my time anyways.

They definitely could put some restrictions on it.. even if they made it that no more then 2 people could go on it at a time or something. Maybe have a couple of different types too. 4 week and 8 week?

Another idea is to allow a practice squad player to play in a game, without having to bring him up to the 53.

It's time the NFL evolves...

That's a good idea. However, I still think teams should have the opportunity to claim practice squad players doing IR replacement.

I think Shields has earned his respect and position of number one CB. And he has been awesome in the face of critics and personal growing pains. (Became waay better at tackling). With that said. I really hope he is done playing football. Fourth concussion. And one that has lingering effects for this long? And that he needs IR now because he's obviously still not close? That is a sign that he needs to be done. I wish you the best in recovery Sam. Brain function is more important than football. Now go invent that Sam "Shield" to protect others.

Sadly, Bohj, I think you are right. I'm not really expecting him back, for his own health's sake. Such a shame.

Now we have plenty of needs in the next draft, with CB high on the list. In the first three picks, I'd like to see a no.2 sideline receiver, A tight end with speed, a CB (in any order, and CB assumes Shields is gone). In the 4th/5th, a guard and RB (again, any order). In the 6th or 7th, a punter and maybe even a second RB.

I didn't see your post before I posted mine but you said it a whole lot better. I'll always remember the interception at the end of the NFCCG in Chicago to end the game! That was one of many big plays Sam made.

I'm glad Sam is going to IR and hope he thinks about what's best for himself long term, not about Football. He's made a lot of money, hopefully enough at least you'd think so if he was smart with it. Some of these guys who have had multiple concussions are so F'ed up after Football it's sad.

I had a concussion last summer. Initially, I couldn't even read, at all. I think I fell on a bike ride but I was by myself so who knows. I was so screwed up, I forgot how I was injured so the doctors ran $10,000 worth of tests on me. It took months to clear up. I was on extended medical leave for 3 months from work. I still get terrible headaches, just not as many as before.

That one was my second. I pray for a full recovery for Sam and hope he isn't going through absolute hell right now.

Good to see that Shields is getting the appropriate treatment. Time for him to focus on his health and his future. I hope that when he is fully recovered he decides to retire rather than return to football. Thanks, Since '61

Shields is done. Will never see the field again. And that is the right decision. The wrong decision is the fact that Grandpa Ted won't be getting anyone to replace him. Maybe ole TT can get Newhouse back and convert him to cornerback...

You are so wrng. There is an infinite number of 5'9 185 slow of foot poor tackling dbacks out there wating for ted to call. Apparently ted doesnt like the 6'1 bone crushing tacklers like Smith, rhodes, munderlein, they want to actually be paid money.

Why do you come here? I grew up in Minneapolis and even the most hard core Vikings fans I knew were smart enough to shut their mouths, at least until you actually won something. Since 2001 the Vikings have won exactly TWO Playoff Games and actually needed an Ex-Packers to win 1 of the 2 games. In those same 15 years you've missed the playoffs 10 of those years yet you come here with your ridiculous comments acting as though you've done something.

Ha, ha. Newhouse - classic Ted. Thankfully, the Giants have him protecting Eli's right side. Won't have to worry about them for a while.

Shields is done career over. He will get an insurance settlement. No way the pack let him come back. Too bad good player but he cant just keep getting these hits. Life is too short. Ted get this message! Think abut his replacement now you dipshit.

That means Randall is the #1. He's hurt. Ditto for Rollins. Even if they play, won't be close to 100%. I think the Packers are in deep trouble.

How about Janis playing cornerback since he doesn't seem to have a future at wide receiver? He's just as fast as Sam Shields, taller and good with hands. Shields also converted from wide receiver to cornerback in his last year of college.
