Packers Place Brett Goode on IR

The team has signed a rookie long snapper to take Goode's place.

From the Packers

The Green Bay Packers have signed LS Rick Lovato and placed LS Brett Goode (knee) on injured reserve. The transactions were announced Tuesday by Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations Ted Thompson.

Lovato, a 6-foot-2, 249-pound rookie out of Old Dominion, originally signed with the Chicago Bears as a non-drafted free agent on May 8, 2015. After spending the offseason and training camp with the Bears, he was released on Aug. 31. Lovato appeared in all 50 games for Old Dominion as the team’s long snapper from 2011-14. He will wear No. 59 for the Packers.

It would appear Goode gutted it out Sunday after injuring his knee in the first quarter.

Well, there goes any chance at a Super Bowl run.

The biggest concern is with FG's. The timing thing with Ginger and Crosby. Kickers are very finicky with just about everything prior to contact. Hate to lose a game because of a botched snap.

Punting I'm not worried as much, a little more room for error.

Like you said Mojo, it may disrupt the timing on FG which would suck. However, in the punt game it might just mean we have to wait an extra tenth of a second to watch either the 28 yard shank or the 55 yard bomb into the end-zone.

Too bad for Brett Goode though. He's been around a long time in a position you don't notice until something goes wrong. I think he's considered a good guy too. He can come back from an ACL, but not sure he'll be back. TT may opt to not have to pay the vet minimum for a LS.

Colt Lyerla doesn't wait to be called on to long snap, he lurks on the sidelines waiting to hurl the ball between his legs at the bastard punter's face.

It would be much appreciated if someone could explain why a center can't also a long snapper. It would be nice to combine the two and get an extra roster spot.

Long snappers, kickers, and punters are usually the only designated players. Watch any game and the long snapper has his head upside down waiting for the call to snap.

A center has a qbs hand on his butt or is in closer range to the qb at a measured distance with his head up pointing out the protection communicating with the other lineman.

Accuracy is more important for a much longer snap so getting it off where it should be is much more important than blocking due to the time involved. That is where consistancy is needed with the three special teamers.

TE mark chmura was the long snapper back in the day. He saved a roster spot. I love dual players to the point of overuse and exhaustion.

Anybody can feel free to add or correct me here. I do not have any nfl credentials.

A long snapper is 250 to 260 lbs. usually - think linebacker size. He needs to be able to sprint down the field after a snap to tackle the punt returner. 300- 320 lb centers would be gassed after 20 yards, hence the position of Long Snapper. Long Snappers have to run 40-50 yards and you hear their name often on tackles way down the field. In addition, you want your staring center injured long snapping?

Direct snaps and shotgun type snaps do not require the equivalent of a forward pass between the legs. That is a real talent. Notice how fast a snap to a punter is: 12 to 14 yards backwards at high speed, perfect spiral and accurate 100% of the time. Same on FG's and Extra Points.

Same reason punters and kickers are not the same person. Think specialization.

My guess? The team will try to make the LS job easier by scoring TD's and not having lousy field position. Well, that is a hope anyway.

He is listed at 255 and has 14 tackles in 7 years with one fumble recovery. Well put though. They are firing a perfect spiral between the legs with both hands. Its definately an art. The last long snapper from the bears to sign with the pack is rob davis 41 tackles 1 fumble recovery, who lasted 10 years on the field and is still with the organization.

They will be fine a long snapper has one job, they should have signed that former navy seal that tried to make it I think the Seahawks had him in training camp.

I find this very disturbing.

The best long snapper is the one you don't think of. That Giant/Niners game from years ago popped into my head.

Its not how short or tall you are, its the length of the stroke. It helps to get her drunk first too.

The world as we know it is coming to an end when you cant take a joke. Refering to a vagina by a nikname is not sexist. It was a play on words talking about sex. Go to the sesame street website.

Yeah, here's the thing: the world as you've known it IS ending. Some jokes are still cool, but jokes about using alcohol to coerce women into having sex with you aren't cool. I know it's tough to adjust to the times, but you're a tough guy. You can do it, cowboy! Future generations will thank you.

This figures. Our STs were playing pretty well this season. Hopefully this does not impact our FGs and PATs. We'll find out pretty soon. Thanks, Since '61

This is kind of like a missing tooth that was once in the front of your mouth...you don't give it much attention until there is a black gap and spit comes sputtering out.....

I really hope that Packers have a great dentist! :-(
