Packers Periscope: Lions vs. Packers

We peer into the Packers Periscope to look at the past, present and future of the Lions and the Packers.

Goodness gracious, what a game Sunday. The Packers were dead-to-rights. Lifeless. Checked out.

Then, they weren't. Behind Jordan Love and his fourth-quarter groove, alongside the defense we need the defense to be, the Packers capped off team-record 17-point fourth-quarter comeback en route to an 18-17 victory and 2-1 record. And with that comes... a very short week and the divisional favorite Detroit Lions coming to Lambeau Thursday night with already a lot to play for.

So, now let's raise the Packers Periscope and look at the past, present and future of this historic Norris Division rivalry.

The Past

Thursday's matchup will be number 188 in the all-time series, with the Packers holding a 105-75-7 edge. However, recent history has gone the way of the Honolulu Blue and Silver with the Lions taking the past three, including last year's season finale in which the Lions entered Lambeau with nothing to play for but pride (pun intended) and dashed the Packers' playoff chances and ended Aaron Rodgers's Packers career. But this is a Packers website! We're not going to revisit a gut-punch of a game while getting ready to rock for the next matchup, especially still riding the high from Sunday's big win.

The date was December 31, 1994. The 9-7 Detroit Lions visited Lambeau Field to take on Brett Favre and the likewise 9-7 Packers. Now, this was a time when there were only three divisions - Central, West and East. Which means of the six playoff teams, only three were division winners. In 1994, all four of the current NFC North teams made the playoffs -- the two NFC Wild Card matchups that year were Lions vs. Packers and Bears at  the Division Champion Vikings.

Led by quarterback Dave Krieg and Hall of Famer Barry Sanders, the Lions were looking to slay a dragon that was Lambeau Field. There hadn't been much success there of late, with the Packers turning into a legitimate contender and to make a playoff run. Sanders was obviously the key, and had some interesting splits against Green Bay that year. In his first matchup, which was at Lambeau, Sanders rushed for only 47 yards on 15 carries. But at the Pontiac Silverdome weeks later, he went ballistic for 188 yards on 20 carries. So, safe to say the Packers were pretty focused on No. 20 given his huge game earlier that season.

The Wild Card matchup between the two was a defensive struggle, with both offenses struggling in the Wisconsin cold. The Packers opened the scoring with a Dorsey Levens touchdown to open the scoring at 7-0. Chris Jacke nailed a 51-yarder to make it 10-0 at the half. In the third quarter, each team kicked field goals, with Jacke hitting from 32 and Lions kicker Jason Hanson from 38. The fourth would bring some fireworks, however. Down 13-3, the Lions and Krieg finally found the end zone on a 3-yard pass to tight end Brett Perriman. Another Jacke field goal pushed the lead back to 16-10 and the Lions weren't able to find paydirt again, save for the Packers taking a safety to end the game and a 16-12 final.

You might notice that there aren't and references to Barry Sanders above, and that's for good reason. In a historic dominant effort, the Packers held him to -1 rushing on the day. You read that right, younger fans who may not remember this game. The Green Bay Packers held Barry Sanders to NEGATIVE-ONE RUSHING YARDS. I'm no genius, but I'm pretty sure that's objectively backward.

SOAK IN the vintage NFL Primetime highlights below. Peak Boomer, peak music, peak 90s. It's a beautiful thing.

The Present

We all know what went down at Lambeau on Sunday. And again, it's a very short turnaround for a LOT of injured Packers. As Matt LaFleur loves to say, they'll get the week and see how they respond going into the game. As for our counterparts in the Motor City, the Lions come in likewise at 2-1 after a bit of a throttling at home against Atlanta. Quarterback Jared Goff played a very efficient game as he's done a lot the last couple seasons with the Lions, going 22/33 for 243 yards, one touchdown, one pick. But that was in the friendly confines of Ford Field, where Goff has played very well. Outside, though, he's struggled a bit more and we'll see what Packers defense shows up against him this week.

Offensively, the Lions have one of the better offensive lines in football when healthy (sound familiar?). But standout tackle Taylor Decker was sidelined Sunday and replaced with budding star Penei Sewell, who moved from his standard right tackle spot. Sewell's replacement, Matt Nelson, was carted off the field with an injury and replaced by John Skipper. So like the Packers, the offensive line shuffling will be something to keep an eye on. Also missing from the lineup is back David Montgomery, the tough-nosed runner who caused some major headaches while in Chicago. Replaced with him is rookie Jahmyr Gibbs, who saw an uptick in production with 17 carries for 80 yards and another 21 through the air. The Packer linebackers will need to bring a little extra speed with them Thursday to keep up with him. And let's not forget about stud receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown. He'll certainly get his fair share of targets.

On the other side, the Lions defense is much improved from the group that was historically bad to start the 2022 season. Free agent signing CJ Gardner-Johnson is out for most of the season with a torn pectoral, but his replacement, rookie Brian Branch has played very well and looks to be in that spot for the long haul. Rookie linebacker Jack Campbell has also lived up to his first-round billing, and up front Aidan Hutchinson remains a force. At every level, the Lions have playmakers and will prove a very tough test for Jordan Love.

The Future

Thursday Night Football, 7:15 local time, Lambeau Field. Given the standings with both Minnesota and Chicago going winless, it looks like the North will be a two horse race. Home field advantage - especially against the Lions - hasn't exactly been the Packers calling card in big games the last few seasons. While they've generally held serve at home, teams like the Lions, who play with a particularly physical style, have been Green Bay's kryptonite. In order to take back the division, they'll need to match the Lions' intensity and physicality. They certainly met the Saints' level when it counted, but they'll undoubtedly need to get off to a faster start. As Dan Campbell mentioned last season, they think they can drag the Packers out to the deep water and let them drown. It's up to the players to ensure that doesn't happen.

At the time of writing this, the spread is Lions -1.5. It's damn near a pickem, but Vegas thinks the Lions are about a field goal better. Given Detroit's three-game winning streak and solid start to the year, it's easy to understand why. Another undermanned team will certainly struggle this week, so here's to hoping the Packers get some of their studs back. But either way, this would be one of the tougher tests for the Packers to start the year, and bringing extra intensity will be integral. Luckily, we don't have to wait very long to get there.

Dan Skipper is 6’10. One huge guy. We need to play Caleb Jones now. None of these little squirts.

The Past- I’ve seen 3 straight Loses.
The Present- Jarod Goeff is a Top ten NFL QB
The Future-? NFL is spreading it’s wings Overseas.
Including China. So I’m sure a "China Bowl" in Taiwan
Is a better bet.
But since I’m not a Blue Kool-aid drinker.
Give me a Royal Dragon Vodka.
Better yet the Bottle.

I'm interested to know how your view changes if the Packers beat the Lions.

I mean.. this is "the real test"- per you.

And, if they do beat the Lions, now that they've improved the QB positions and after that other guy couldn't lead this team to a victory vs. Detroit in the last 3 matches as you pointed out... how does that change your view on Gutekunst, Love, and the decision to move in this direction?

Or do you just move the goal posts in attempts to preserve your preconceived notions?

The last three Loses - pieces were missing.
My view on Gutey will never change.
Love is the QB. I'm on the Fence.
A win won't change that.

My crystal Ball shows Vegas odds.
If thats preconceived, I'm not alone.

*By the way- Branch is the Rookie of the week.
You know that ss that was suppose to replace Amos.

I was disappointed Gute passed on Branch, opting for a Ted-like Door #2, taking Reed and Brooks with the two picks he got for one.

But it's waaaaay too early to determine who won and lost that decision. Reed's impact as a playmaker is emerging and Brooks has a sack to his credit.

Tamp the brakes on decrying it a W for Detroit three games into the season.

If the better player isn't your goal.
Then yes- You can find help elsewhere.
No doubt he got good guys for growth.
But giving away the BPA is disappointing.

Van Ness
Musgrave
Reed
Have no talent
Have done nothing for this team
Will do nothing
We could have got better at slot corner.
We wasted picks on Speed, Athleticism, mismatches.
We could have upgraded on Nixon!
We never invest on O
Wait … This is so much crap I can’t write more

I really enjoyed the highlights from the 1994 playoff game against the Lions. Very excited to see all the good news on the injury front. Here's hoping the Packers get off to a good start with Jones and Watson contributing big plays.

My gut feeling is (if our starters return), we will win this game.
The motivations are a National TV audience, Homefield advantage, a Revenge factor, the opportunity to raise the Respect meter, and last but not least, lead the NFC North after four games.
Do it!!
Go Packers!!!

The offense should be better this year. Need Jones back for this game. Watson would be nice to have back too. No idea what to expect from this defense. I think the Lions run until Packers defense shows that they can stop it.

I got to paint Watson as a bust. Just not enough playing time. Same dam injury over and over must be from his college days too. He just doesn't produce enough to be a keeper. His star is fading fast for me

20 games. Available for 14 of them. 41 receptions, 7 rushes, 30 first downs, 9 TDs.

That's a TD every 9 touches. I'd be interested in knowing who has done better than that.

It's a rough game. People get hurt. I think 20 games into his career is a little too early to throw in the towel on him.

I mean, I'd say the vikings are a total dumpster fire, but then it's like, no- they are more like one of those landfill tire fires that happened down in florida during the late 80's early 90's.. You remember those? Those tire fires burned out of control, so monstrous was the trash heap fire that they literally couldn't put them out for months! MONTHS! Rivers of garbage-y melted oily shit rolled out of those fires.

Yeah, that's more like what the Vikings are.. amirite, or what, Fubared!?! You know what I'm talkin' bout.

The key to this game is that they are playing on grass. If we get at least 3 key players back from injury we should be able to give them a game because the grass will slow them down.

S h the trade last year in second rd directly led to reed, wicks, and brooks. Is branch good yes he was one of my draft crushes but I’m so happy with all 3 players we got for that one pick. 24 draft has much better safety’s fully expect gute to draft 2 this year along with oline and rb part of the long range plan

The Lions will be the greatest challenge yet this year. We will get our first look at the budding superstar RB/ receiver Jaymyr Gibbs. Expect to see him lined up at various positions. We could not stop Atlanta's RB star so it is a hope and a prayer that we can stop Detroit's. Moreover, they have a far better QB than Atlanta so I am surprised that the odds makers have ruled it a close game. If we do not get our injured players back this could be a long and frustrating game. If we can contain Gibbs I like our chances. But, only if we are healthy. GPG

Gibbs aint that good. I was shocked they took him not knowing they got rid of their two top backs but as a bama fan Gibbs was so so. He has speed but goes down easy too. You can trip up this guy.

Gibbs "ain't that good" ????? All he needs is a little crack in the line and he will be in the end zone faster than you can say go Pack go. It was generally agreed that Gibbs was the second best back in the draft. Some liked him even better because of his flexibility and receiving skills. He led the team in pass receptions and routinely played all the positions along the line. I actually would not have minded if the Packers would have drafted him with their first pick. They could have used him as both a slot receiver and change of pace RB.That said, I am Happy with Van Ness.

"they'll need to match the Lions' intensity and physicality"

Tony, I usually want the best 5 starting on the O-line and the best on the D-line (of course). Since we can't seem to get that all the time, for this game I want the meanest, nastiest knee biters we can put out there. Send Campbell home on crutches.

--Let's not forget that Seattle beat the Lions in their house by pressuring Goff and sure tackling of Gibbs
--I'm confusing the game you mentioned with the previous year's wild card win (first post season appearance in 11 yrs) vs Lions with a 40 yard bomb to Sharpe at end of game.

First this Lions team is not as good as last year. The passing game is suspect because their O line isnt protecting.
Whether its do to injury or they lost a key player, dont know but Goof has been running for his life.
The run game is suspect as well and the Lions got rid of two guys, one injury prone ( good idea ) and the other wanted too much money (good idea).
The pass rush is so so. I know they are missing one of their top guys who anchored the opposite side of the line from Hutchinson and its shows this year.
The Pack have a chance only if the O line can stop the rush and we can put pressure on Goof.
