Packers must re-address tight end in the 2022 NFL Draft

The Packers must add talent to the tight end room in the upcoming NFL Draft.

While the Green Bay Packers have plenty of tight ends on their roster entering the 2022 season, they also have plenty of question marks at the position.

Robert Tonyan, Green Bay’s traditional pass-catching tight end, is expected to be back from his ACL injury in time for the regular season, according to Bill Huber of Sports Illustrated.

However, Tonyan’s production took a significant dip from 2020 to 2021 even before the injury, and he may well be playing his last season for the Packers.

Tonyan turns 28 this month, and if he is able to rebound from a disappointing 2021 campaign and rebuild his value, Big Bob may price himself out of Green Bay.

Josiah Deguara and Dominique Dafney are not traditional tight ends and Marcedes Lewis can’t last forever in his specified role.

It is imperative the Packers find a true pass-catching tight end in this year’s draft, who can also contribute on the blocking side.

There is no Kyle Pitts in this draft, but that’s okay, because the Packers have rarely used premium picks on the tight end position anyway.

There is however a plethora of options which Green Bay could target on day two or early on day three, such as:

  • Daniel Bellinger, San Diego State
  • Greg Dulcich, UCLA
  • Jake Ferguson, Wisconsin
  • Charlie Kolar, Iowa State
  • Isaiah Likely, Coastal Carolina
  • Trey McBride, Colorado State
  • Jeremy Ruckert, Ohio State
  • Cole Turner, Nevada
  • Jelani Woods, Virginia
  • Jalen Wydermyer, Texas A&M

The Packers have taken three tight ends in the third round since 2014: Richard Rodgers, Jace Sternberger and Josiah Deguara.

This could well be the sweet spot for Green Bay once again as they look to add more talent to the tight end room for 2022 and beyond.

I always love the "must address" columns. it's as though people wake up one day and they don't believe there is a roster plan, or a 5 year roster plan, or any plan.

THE PACKERS MUST ADDRESS!!!
Safety
Receiver
Cornerback
Edge
Inside linebacker
d-line
o-line
succession plan for running backs
quarterback
special teams
kicker
punter
equipment manager
front office staff
sledding hill manager
travel coordinator

Man ppl are really up their own but in their all or nothing black and white thinking. The must address phrasing isn't this person going derpa derpa the Packers have no plans, it's him just stating like how every year ppl list team needs at draft time and the level of priority each need may be ECT. Outside of drafting a TE what other plan could Packers have to bolster a weak/thin pass catching options on our roster with little salary cap and not much in FA TE's?
Sure they may skimp by and not address it in the draft but that's doubtful. He's basically benignly saying we need some WRs out of this draft, but saying it with the TE position and only needing really another pass catching one.

Would you be criticizing him for saying that we need to address the WR position in the draft besides saying yeah no duh einsteain after we lost Adams and mvs and already needing a legit #2 before we lost those guys? It's just him saying we have a need at another pass catching TE, NOT that the Packers don't have a plan, he can't mind read what TE they have a plan to draft, but he can state what our team needs are and what TE options in the draft that would fill that spot.

There's what you need/want, and what you have.

We have Lewis and Deguara. They're under contract. They'll be on the team. That's two of the four that will make the 53 man squad.

We have Tonyan, and he'll be back at some point in the season.

We have Davis and Dafney. I have no problem replacing either one of them with a draft pick

In terms of NEED, our NEED at TE is a lot less than our NEED at OL. WR, Safety and Edge. There doesn't seem to be any monster TE who is going to transform the offense, but there are several guys going later in the draft who could conceivably beat out Dafney and Davis.

Mark, Bitternotsour & Harry. Been studying TE offerings in this draft this past week, and ALL of those thoughts came to mind. Along with this thought: I could easily see us taking TWO TEs!!

I do think Likely is going to be a good player.

And, we really could close our eyes, throw a dart, and odds are the player will find his way to helping the Packers. While WR, EDGE, OT are top needs, hey, there’s room for depth or upgrades all over.

I mean, who wouldn’t want Devin Lloyd next to Campbell? A top Safety added to Amos & Savage? Another top CB? A top DT?

Could easily see the Packers tag Trey McBride or Jelani Woods at #59.

Doubler, so I’ll add:
TE Charlie Kolar - Iowa St.
6-6.5” 260 arms 34.5” hands 10” d per 40
Big production > 6 TDs/yr 3x in a row. 168 rec 2181 yds. Not fast/explosive but size advantage. Above average body control. Good routes. Finds zones on scrambles, etc.

Had some drops. Needs strength and blocking development like just about any rookie.
12g 62 REC 756 YDS 12.2 YPR 6 TD in 2021.

Much like Cole Kmet

#28 Drake London WR
#39 to Bills for #40 and #89
#40 Trey McBride TE
#48 Christian Watson WR

#59 Spiller RB
#64 Skyy Moore WR from Denver #171 and Chicago #2in 2023 to Denver

You wouldn't need to, Ruckert has been in a walking boot since the Senior Bowl and hasn't been able to test at all. Meanwhile everybody that was bunched around him had really good combines or pro days. I think he'll still be there at 132.

Ruckert is around 90 on the Consensus board . His injury is plantar fasciitis, which I had. The only cure is rest, thus, the boot. He’s probably doing daily therapy, ice, massage, etc. This will go away if he rests .

I’d be surprised if he got anywhere near #132. Kolar, maybe. A real possibility is that Ruckert will be taken a few picks before our turn.

You're a GM about to start paying a guy $2.5 million a year. Do you take a guy that tested well or a guy that couldn't test at all? A bunch of the TEs expected to be taken in the same area as Rickert tested better than people thought they would. I like Ruckert, I just think he's going to be taken later than people thought a month ago.

Antonio Gates had plantar fasciitis and it bothered him for two years BTW. You can get injections(I did) but it increases the risk of permanent damage and then surgery is required.

Woods is a good sized TE and has a high ceiling. So does McBride who also has a very high floor.

GUTE DOESN'T NEED TO ADDRESS ANYTHING. The starting 11 are good to go on Defense. He still can move players around on the OL. And Cobb, Lazard, and Rodgers, are weak, but capable. It will be a full house when Bahk and Jenkins get back . He can go anywhere he wants for depth. It's after the starting 22 where things look cloudy. We want better at WR. Because of what we loss. And Tonyan will only be here till someone shows him the money. Why? Because YOU CAN"T SPEND BROWNIE POINTS! As Long as Rodgers is the franchise. You kiss his ass or he'll leave. Because he can't fix stupid. And as long as we don't have that TE threat. It puts the pressure on him and not the defense.

I keep looking at different player rankings to see who/position will be available at the Packers selection. I try to keep pushing TEs but the boards I see, they just aren't there until 4-5 round range. One guy not mentioned and who had a great Shrine bowl presence was the TE from MD. Don't remember his name but shows up in the 5th round.
One last thing...again going through the player rankings and a safety keeps popping up at the Packer's 26th pick...wonder how that will play to the fans if it happens?

THIS fan will be very happy if the Packers get a great safety in this draft, even if it means pick #22. As good as the top 5 DBs on our roster look right now, we don't have a really great nickel back candidate, and Savage isn't improving, and Amos isn't getting younger, and Jaire is coming off a serious injury and asking for the moon. A guy like Daxton Hill can play safety, corner, or nickel/slot.

My guess is that the coaching staff has been looking at who we have now and forecasting how they will be this season. Obvious needs will be noted. Scouts are finalizing the prospects in the draft. All of them will give input. Then a list of players who match up with both camps will be ranked by Gutie and staff. If a high regarded player slips or if a needed player comes in range then he will make a trade move in the draft. I expect to see a TE drafted but it’s a matter of when during the draft.

A top notch TE takes the sting out of not having a great #1 WR and/or makes a lesser WR more effective. Look at the impact Kelce, Kittle and Gronk have on their offenses. Are their WR teammates that great individually or did these TEs make them better than they are? Coffman, Finley, Chewey and even a one year rental in Cook made GB's offenses special.

In most of my mock drafts, I end up taking two TEs. Today's draft:
22 OL Kenyon Green (another Elgton Jenkins who'll start where needed)
28 WR Christian Watson (raw, but super talented--could be a rough rookie year...)
53 TE Trey McBride (starting TE very soon)
59 LB/ED Leo Chenal (starting LB and rush specialist)
92 RB Kyren Williams (Aaron Jones replacement in one year)
132 TE Jelani Woods (more talented than Jermichael Finley if he develops)
140 CB/S Zyon McCollum (tall athletic freak who I'd move to free safety)
171 WR Danny Gray (fast, talented replacement for MVSESB)
228 OL Zach Tom (developmental OL)
249 P Matt Araiza (competes for starting punter job)
258 C Nick Ford (competes for backup center)
Struck out on a good nickel/safety, but a pretty good haul nonetheless

Really looks good. But I still can't get away from Burks. I say forget the Trench this draft. Re-Load the weapons..

Not a Fan of London. This isn't basketball. Don't like the trade to NE. Try moving up with Washington. # 28 For Hill S. MI.???? Savage could be moved. I wouldn't take an OL unless it is Green.

Savage is a candidate to be traded and bring in Brisker or Hill. The trades pop up from the simulator, some seem like a stretch, but wait until the QB frenzy plays out or the run on fast WRs. I would look at Four picks in the second round. London is a guy like Tee Higgins, who runs the correct routes and has faster feet than Lazard. Rodgers likes the big wingspan guys Played Hoops for USC and a high-jumper. He has a solid RAC, can high-point the ball and bring it home, unlike MVS and solid
academically.

Sorry, my friend. I wouldn’t touch London with a 10 ft. pole. Same for Myjai. Same for Ruckert. Skyy might crawl into bottom R1.

I’m concerned. These simulators are fucking garbage and destroy gray matter.

There are super high quality players no one is looking at. No one… Stunned.

The feeding frenzy may be over for a bit. Now we have to sit and wait out the draft. It's Baseball Season.

I went with Green because he had dropped and was the BPA. A bunch of receivers went before 22, though a few more were left, including Watson. As much as I like Watson as a developmental WR I really think he's going to have a lot of issues his first couple of years--I'm predicting wrong routes, dropped passes, etc. and we all know how that works out with Aaron Rodgers. I wouldn't be shocked if Danny Gray had a better rookie year than Watson if this set happened for the Packers.

Green is one of the highest floor players in this draft, and he would REALLY make OL no longer a worry. I DO believe in BPA especially if it's a big guy, unless the "weapon" guy is both high floor AND high ceiling.

I wasn't a big fan of Trey McBride as a high pick until he ran his pro-day 40. Getting him AND Woods is my ideal TE draft.

IF Gutey wants an edge Rusher. He will trade with Washington. Giving the #22. And #92 and #171. Next trade. The Jets will be targeting D. Hill of Mi. The jets have to beat KC to him. If Gutey wants to trade down. It will be with the jets.

I’m not impressed with any talents or health of our TEs!! I really like the kid from Ohio State. He is a tremendous blocker for our run game and catches anything thrown to him. He didn’t get thrown to a lot because the two wrs on the team are going in the top twenty in this years draft. I liked Wylie from A&M. He dropped off in his pass catching but that’s because his qb’s were lame!! The kid from Colorado state is very talented route running and catching, blocking not do much. This team has not replaced Finley who was a tremendous talent. I think we let the draft flow to us and we get what we get. 8-12 very capable wrs. What happens if Jordan Davis is still out there at 22? I’m running that card up there pronto!

I know one TE Gutey definitely WON'T be taking. Jalen Wydermyer ended up with 1.06 RAS. It seems like he puts too much stock in those athletic tests at times but he's not touching that with a 10 foot pole.

Check out the Bootleg Football discussion on TEs ('The Other Guys of the 2022 draft'). They point out that the best three TE blockers in this draft are Trey McBride, Cade Otton and James Mitchell. They also pointed out that no two teams will have the TEs on their board stacked the same way, as the prospects offer such different things.

Mc Bride might go in the 2nd somewhere, Otton early 3rd and Mitchell a late pick (rd 7 maybe) but a team that values Otton's blocking prowess highly, for example, might part with a later 2nd.

I'd like to see any of those picks on the Packers roster. Also like Jelani Woods (round 3-4), and the very under-used (in college) Jeremy Ruckert. Brett Kollmann also liked Daniel Bellinger (possibly a round 6 guy).

Lots of possibilities sprinkled all through the draft. I would tend to avoid the pure pass catchers in this draft - I think the Packers want at least a reasonable blocking ability in their TEs (i think they learned a lesson from having Jimmy Graham). At the very least get a decent-sized try hard blocker and hope to coach them up.

Another sort of sleeper is Austin Allen out of Nebraska. Did good in at combine in everything except 40 yard dash. He catches everything and is 6'7'. I am an Iowa fan and we have had some great tight ends. He played well against us and I would have liked him in a Hawkeye uniform. He could be had late 4 or 5. A deep sleeper is Josh
Babicz out of North Dakota State, another football factory. He is supposed to be a lights out blocker who catches the ball really well. 70% of his catches were touchdowns. Maybe a UDFA who could beat out Mercedes Lewis and
save us 3 million $ to spend elsewhere. Otherwise I like Ruckert, Woods, Mcbride and Kolar the best.

Allen had a crazy 3-cone for a guy that tall. 6.95 IIRC. That's a lot of length to get changing direction. I read somewhere that he has more luck down blocking and struggles when he's called to block the guy right in front of him.

I don't believe Gute will draft a TE. Next year maybe. GB draft needs are. listed as EDGE,WR, DL. We all know Gutey will make a trade. So this is what I came up with per Trade Value chart. IN ORDER:
#11. Travon Walker. Edge. Georgia / for #22,#59
#28 Christian Watson. WR. ND State
#53. Travis Jones DL Conn.
#74 Jalen Tolbert WR. S.Alabama
#92. Atlanta
#132. Atlanta
#140. Velus Jones Wr. Tenn.
#171. Danny Gray. WR. SMU
#228. Branden Martin. LB. Ball St.
#249. Owynnterrio Cole. S Louisville
#258. Antwan Collier. S FL A & M

Packers already have 3 tight ends under contract so I wouldnt expect them to use anything more than a late round pick on a tight end.

I get paid more than $100 to $200 per HOUR for working online. I heard about this job 3 months ago and after joining this I have earned easily $35000 from this without having online working skills .. Simply give it a shot on the accompanying site…
