Packers Make Two Roster Moves Wednesday

The Packers made two roster moves Wednesday, claiming a receiver and signing a veteran offensive linemen to bolster the second-unit depth.

The Green Bay Packers made a couple of roster moves on the eve of their first exhibition game of the 2012 season against the San Diego Chargers.

Earlier Wednesday, Green Bay claimed receiver Andy Brewer off waivers from Philadelphia and placed undrafted free agent guard Jaymes Brooks on reserve/PUP list. Wes Hodkiewicz of the Green Bay Press Gazette told me it is likely Brooks is waived through an injury settlement.

Brooks was signed after the draft out of Virginia Tech but went without a training camp practice because of a hamstring injury.

Brewer spent two years with the Omaha Nighthawks of the UFL before hooking on with Eagles this offseason. The 6-3, 215-pounder caught five passes for 49 yards for the Nighthawks in 2010.

Late Wednesday night, Hodkiewicz also reported that the Packers had signed veteran offensive lineman Reggie Wells and placed offensive tackle Mike McCabe on injured reserve.

Wells, a 91-game starter in Arizona and Philadelphia, was last with the Carolina Panthers in 2011. He played in five games as a backup last season.

McCabe, an undrafted free agent from Holy Cross, was dealing with a hip injury and hadn't practiced since July 28.

The Packers offensive line depth took several injury hits early in training camp, and signing Wells brings a veteran presence that was lacking in the second unit. Wells is unlikely to play Thursday in San Diego.

I actually can't think of one good reason NOT to bring any player in that you want get a good look at. The NFL gives them 90 spots for a reason.
