Packers Make more Roster Moves plus Practice Squad is Formed

The Packers are making moves to finalize their 53-man roster and Practice Squad.

RB Juhrell Pressley claimed, Bret Goode signed... It's 12:00 EST when this post was started and news is starting to trickle in. We'll have all of the latest roster moves and Practice Aquad additions here as they are named:

Packers sign Bret Goode to return as their long snapper. A roster spot needs to be cleared, but no news on that yet. My first guess is Davis to IR.

Packers claim RB Jhurell Pressley from the Vikings. Pressley ran a 4.38 40 yd dash and just last week returned a kickoff 106 yds for a TD.

Brandon Burks has been released to make room for Pressley.

To make room for Bret Goode, the Packers placed CB Makinton Dorleant on IR.

PRACTICE SQUAD:

OLB Reggie Gilbert

G Lucas Patrick

G Blake Muir (from 49ers)

ILB Carl Bradford

ILB Beniquez Brown

WR Herb Waters

RB Don Jackson

DT Brian Price

WR Geronimo Allison  - And ANOTHER WR!  9 in total now.

Al - I may have missed something in all the discussions about Sitton but I thought the Packers had an open roster spot on the 53 and Goode now fills that 53rd spot. Unless I'm incorrect I don't think that the Packers need to release anyone to open a spot for Goode. Glad to see that Gilbert made it to the PS. I hope G. Allison does as well. Thanks, Since '61

Any word of a replacement for Sitton? Can't believe TT would want to go with either Taylor or Barclay as a starter there.

Why can't you believe it?

Because Barclay & Taylor lack talent?

Well, so did Marshall Newhouse, Nate Palmer, Brad Jones, MD Jennings, Jerron McMillian, Andrew Quarless, Graham Harrell, Brandon Bostick, DuJuan Harris and a few others whom TT has COUNTED upon to be contributors the past several seasons.

Get ready for the Barclay or Taylor era at LG and in TT always, always, always trust.

Barclay has been forced into playing RT and LT, and true, he was bad at the former and horrible at the latter. But no one is putting him at tackle. As a guard, he has shown some ability as a run blocker, while being less effective as a pass blocker. But being sandwiched between Bakhtiari and Tretter, who are both coming off a very strong camp, and playing in a contract year, he should be able to be adequate. Is that good enough? Bakhtiari has been adequate at LT for four years, and the Packers have done well, so a year of Barclay at LG shouldn't be a huge concern.

It won't be a whole year. It will probably bly just be 6 weeks until Linsley can come off the PUP.

After thinking it through overnight, I still don’t agree with it, but I think it makes a bit more sense. They want to keep Tretter and Linsley right? Both are FAs after this year. So when Linsley comes back, why not move Tretter to LG, where he’s played well and plug Linsley back in at Center. And they were high on Lane Taylor, so by cutting Sitton, you get to see Taylor in action for 6-8 weeks too. That way, you know who you’ve got for sure there too. And it saves them 6.5 million to extend any combination of Lacy, Tretter, D Jones, Perry, Bakh and/or Lang.

I still think it makes the line much weaker THIS year. And of course winning titles is what it’s all about. Plus, I’d bet money that Sitton ends up on the Seahawks, shoring up their only real weak spot. And if not the Seahawks, then the Vikings (or as been reported), the Bears. I also fear CAR and AZ. So I still don’t agree with the move. Let next year figure out next year.

This is the most Ted move that Ted ever did Ted. Great team builder. Not great at going all in. Ever. I'm more than ready for you to retire dude. Darn you.

Ted's retirement won't change things much philosophically as he is Eliot's mentor more so than pops. Also, the simple truth is that good teams have to eject good/core legacy veterans before their time as new players develop and need to be fairly compensated on their 2nd contract to stay with the team. Perennially, it's the bad teams who pay top $ for good teams' released players as they fail to develop and sustain their own core. Still, it hurts seeing Josh Sitton go. John Elway would not have released him in a "Super Bowl or bust" year like the Packers seem to have this year. It's very tough winning the SB. Sometimes you have to stack the deck.

Maybe. Look at Dorsey and Schneider though. They dabble in FA - and they are both of the Ted Thompson scouting tree too. I realize it's not provable, but I get the distinct feeling that many at 1265 Lombardi are frustrated with Ted's almost complete risk aversion in FA and his almost total commitment to youth.

And I don't give a crap about "getting" to the playoffs with an elite QB every year. You have to REALLY screw up not to make the playoffs with an elite QB. Brees is the only modern example I can think of who's teams routinely haven't made the playoffs.

I want Super Bowl trophies.

Not saying Elliott wouldn't operate like Ted, but it seems any GM who's been under Thompson really doesn't operate like him. Personally I see Elliott (If Hired) operating more like his Dad or Schneider. Matter of fact Schneider is so far from Thompson you'd never know he worked under him for so long IMO. Schneider does build through the draft and keep his core players, but he also will make a trade, or sign a Free Agent if he thinks it will win a SB.

Reggie took over a mess in Oakland but has seemed to piece together a club that looks like it's ready to compete, maybe even this year. Again he used every avenue available to him, he really had to because he HAD to start from scratch. Literally.

Dorsey has been less active than the other 2, but he went and got a QB right away and used Free Agency to sign Macklin and others. I think any GM understands you HAVE to build through the Draft, but it seems the ones who get to the SB use every way possible to get better.

Nick, of the regulars here, you and I seem to be the biggest advocates for moving on. I get that fans don't want to question their team's FO without good reason, so I understand and accept the dislikes that come my way when I bring up uncomfortable topics.

But I'm seriously disillusioned with TT and his ways. IMO it's time to move on. Now.

The Pack will be among the youngest teams in the NFL, again. They will be well under the salary cap, again. With Aaron Rodgers at QB and the easiest schedule in the NFL, they will undoubtedly make the playoffs, again.

For many in the TT can do no wrong camp, these outcomes constitutes success.

For those in the the goal is to win the Super Bowl camp, letting a top-flight G go without any compensation and WITHOUT A VIABLE REPLACEMENT just a week before the season is simply more evidence that TT's decision making is geared more toward the future than the here and now.

What is hard to take is the defamatory comments about a very good Packer player in order to justify TT's decision.

The other gm's spending will even out. The one thing I find interesting is how ssuccessful Ted Thompsons gm tree has been in the NFL. And now perennial losers like Jacksonville and the Browns are trying to emulate it. I'm a little frustrated with ted, but it feels so much better knowing you have a chance than to feel like the Lions or browns(who had a great system in place in the mid 90's) who never do. Or a team like the Eagles who built a dream team and had to blow it up the next year. I'm a little frustrated with Ted, but I would be flat out pissed with Jerry jones or the redskins of not so long ago.

Lindsey is under contract next year too Bearmeat but I'm with you. And it didn't really save them $6.5 Million though it did save them about $4 Million if I'm reading everything right.

Taylor cap hit is $1,450,000.00
Barclays cap hit is $700,000.00
Sittons dead cap number is $300,000.00

Still rather spend the $4 million and have Sitton. Personally I'd love to hear what Rodgers REALLY thinks.

TT always has an eye on NEXT year moreso than this year. That philosophy, along with the presence of an elite QB, has been the basis for GB's sustained success. The downside is that while it tends to even out the highs and lows of team talent and keeps the cap healthy, it probably makes winning SBs harder in any single year. The most talented team does not always, arguably even usually, win the super bowl, so the TT theory is to have multiple chances and hope for health and having the ball bounce our way during the playoffs. I don't entirely agree as I think TT takes it to an extreme, but that is a longer discussion.

Lane Taylor did play at a NFL average starter level in week 17. Looks to me like TT rolled the dice on Taylor being adequate, despite his preseason play (I think Taylor is the only possibility for growth of the offensive line in the short term, but see below), and health on the OL plus the return of Linsley, at which time Linsley/Tretter are the starters at LG and OC, with Barclay and Taylor being the back up. Perhaps later in the season the rookie tackles develop, perhaps at LT and RT, allowing Bulaga to move inside (he would need lots of reps at OG since I don't remember the last time he played there) or one of the rookies starting at OG later in the season.

If the OL plays pretty well, and go deep into the playoffs, such as a SB appearance or win, and the $6M helps TT re-sign Tretter, or Cook, etc, then TT will look like a genius. I don't think the $6M is necessary to re-sign the core players, but that is another long discussion. I've written that cutting Sitton is the dumbest GM decision this year, including giving up a 1st and a 4th for Bradford, so if TT's moves work out, I'll be eating internet crow.

Why has no one mentioned the fact that the packers tried to trade him long before we heard about his release... Why wouldn't a team bite? Seems to me Sittons health isn't what is once was or they wouldn't have made the cut

Because it is not a proven fact that GB tried to trade Sitton long before cutdowns. I never read it anywhere. I never read that TT tried to trade Sitton weeks or months ago. The gist I got is our attempts to trade Sitton started recently. We will see what happens with Sitton in terms of contract, and how he plays, but until Sitton travels from team to team with hat in hand, unable to land a contract, I am going to think we should have been able to get some kind of pick for Sitton.

Why would a team trade a draft pick for Sitton if they can wait and scoop him up? He'll land a contract. It might be informative if he fails a physical, but the key point is that when you're not in cap h*ll, they must feel that he can be replaced somewhat adequately. If that isn't the case (which has happened in the past) they'll have to address it either via trade, signing a free agent or through the draft. Am I happy that they cut Sitton? No. However, the bottom line is that the Coaches and GMs are far better able to evaluate the situation than any of us armchair GM/Coaches.

I also can't remember any player who is cut by the Packers who has become a superstar for another team.

Being on the ps suggests not, but I liked what I saw from him in games. I need to see more (and without that club on the hand).

Certainly it is a position of greater need now Sitton is released (and you have to wonder if Lang will be here after 2017)......

I advocated keeping 10 OL, just because I wanted to develop 2 OGs with the thought that one might be good enough to replace Lang or Sitton in part, if not completely. Walker and Rotheram both got hurt, so that plan went up in smoke. Note that both were waived injured - meaning both can be re-signed week 8. Patrick looked okay, though not ready. I am sure GB will keep an eye on Patrick, and maybe on Walker and Rotheram.

Yup, and right about then is when Bill Belichick says that he cut Terrance Knighton because "It just didn't work out." Oh, thanks Bill.

http://nesn.com/2016/08/bill-belichick-explains-why-patriots-cut-terranc...

In addition to "It just didn't work out," other likely answers include...

-- "We just felt it was in the best interests of this football team."

-- "Look, these are incredibly tough decisions. [Player X] has been a key contributor to this football club for a long time, but in the end we felt it was time to move on."

-- "It came down to a numbers crunch."

-- "We just felt that there were other guys who really fit what we want to do."

Etc. Etc. Etc.

And winning a SB is easy to do? When have we seen the last dynasty? A team winning two Superbowls in a row?

We have parity in the league. When you win, you pick later in the draft. Most of the very good picks are known and go higher. Look at that beast Todd Gurley. He wasn't as impressive in College but scouts projected him to be excellent in the Pros. He is.

I'm not intending to be "a homer" but the best players we got have been in the early rounds.

More than that, it would almost always be foolish for the team to give real answers. What are they going to say? "We don't think he can play anymore?" Or, "He's an injury waiting to happen?" Or, "We have rookies that are just as good but cost a tiny fraction?" Or, "Hey, we all know the guy is waaaay overpriced..." None of those answers are in the best interests of the team.

The Packers certainly WILL be asked about all of these moves, and they will answer with meaningless platitudes... just like the 31 other teams will be doing.

...Those types od answers are not only not in the best interests of the team, but also not in the best interests of the player, either.

I am a firm believer that having a former NFL player as CEO in Mark Murphy as well as a former NFL player as GM in Ted Thompson is a big reason why the Packers actually have concern for, and as a matter of policy will not speak out against their players, both current and former.

If a player was a complete knob in the locker room, had bad work ethic, a drug problem.. Whatever.. The Packers aren't going to tell you about it, because it has a negative effect on that player's ability to attempt to find gainful employment elsewhere.

It's total respect. "He did everything we asked of him, but we've made the decision to move in a different direction".

Unlike humans, NFL teams can regrow a lost body part. Sitton was a valued finger of the O line, but regrowth allows and may dictate the severing of a part for the longer term strength. If you could do same, wouldn't you take that option. : )

From what I've heard from Sitton himself, it appears to be all about the money and football business. He made a statement and was nothing but class about it. We all knew someone had to go and Sitton was expendable according to TT and the Packers. If Bak plays really good they will want to sign him. With all the injuries last year on the o-line younger is the answer.

Sitton wanted a new deal now but youth had priorty. Did Sitton get upset when he gut cut , who knows. Did he possibly give the inclination at some time he would rather try for a new and better deal this season elsewhere than next season, which likely wasn't happening in GB, who knows and in time who will really care. Business is business, the world turns. : )

The positive is the team now has almost enough to resign most of next seasons UFA, especially if the cap goes up $10M.

Perhaps this is , sacrilege but I thought JS was the most overrated lineman overrated offensive line. Although a very good pass blocker, I didn't think he sustained his run blocks terribly well and NEVER got movement on short yardage. He seemed to always be adjusting his pads in space as the play ended. I have no problem with their releasing him especially with the bad back. The problem is they don't have an adequate replacement currently identified. Taylor sucks. It seems to me the most likely option without getting ARod killed is either Barkley or the rookie either at guard or to right tackle and Bulaga the left guard.

I always considered Josh Sitton a very good player but not really Pro Bowl level. It still hurts to lose him, and I'm not looking forward to seeing Lane Taylor in there, but it's not the end of the world. I was just really surprised by the timing of this.

Any chance Josh Sitton gets adopted by the Duck Dynasty Family?

I agree with you Al, but the Packers have no player of Sitton's quality at LG now. From a football point of view this was a bad move, as neither Taylor not Barclay nor any of the other backups are capable of the same level of play. Business wise maybe alright. But the timing is weird. Why not cut the cord then before training camp even started and let the competition play out? Or trade him before now?

And the one thing I don't want to really hear from anybody who supports Ted in this is that if Rodgers gets leveled since Taylor or another backup whiffs on a block is "well should've kept Sitton...". Most of the Ted supporters here will hear about it once that happens...

Sounds like Allison is heading back to GB as a practice squad player. Also Burks was cut and will not be put on the PS. Tough luck for Burks

PS looking pretty good but we a heavy on WRs - hope they get at least another OL since we are very light....Maybe Burks now gets signs on the PS.

Here's a thought: imagine a 7-9 or 6-10 team that enters the next season with 13 rookies. The first thing you'd think is "rebuild".

Now imagine a team with 31 players in the first 3 years of their careers and 7 straight playoff appearances. What comes to mind? Perennial contender? Ascending team?

These are the same team in this case. So which notion holds?

Al and others, I would like your opinion on these:

Seems to me that some of bigger WRs signed may play a hybrid TE postion....in other words a big slot or H-back type.

Still, think they need to sign a real TE, RB, FB, ILB, and real cornerback, but now only 2 PS spots are open. Thoughts?

With only 3 ILBs (and yes I know Clay is available and we have the hybrid safeties in fold....which by the way, i tried to point-out to some of our more opinionated bloggers some time ago, and was crucified for), I think they will try to bring back Bradford after they solve the Goode roster move. Thoughts?

Last, what are we hearing on the Packer IR front?

Well since this last post, it looks like the RB & ILB issue is handled (from a numbers standpoint on the Practice Squad), Dorleant is on IR as many expected, but Davis is not at this time, and Cajuste was not signed, making room for Jackson at RB. No FB, TE , or CB on the Practice Roster currently. Not upset, just pointing out that we will be thin at these positions if somebody gets injured.

Any of those "change of pace" supporters pushing Burkes should be happy with the Pressley trade after watching highlights of the preseason games Pressley played in. He seems to have that burst, appears to catch the ball well, and gets up field very fast, He is also supposed to be a ST standout. Can he block? We shall see. But I did like what I saw.

I can't believe that todays packers are as great as everyone thinks. We continue to see draft picks signed, free agents signed, FA veterans signed, Past packers resigned, PS squad increased, and the turn over since this team won the Superbowl is ridicules. Everyone says Trust in TT. BUT HOW LONG HAS IT BEEN. The turnover of players should tell you somethings not right with our team. Patch , Patch, we aren't getting ahead. How much Longer do we have to wait.

Spoiled by success you are. Packers averaging 10 wins per season over past 10 years (4th best in NFL). McMarthy has the best winning percentage of any Packers head coach--ever. I like that very much.

Lucky - actually MM has the third best winning percentage of any Packers coach.
Vince Lombardi is #1 with a .766 winning % including playoffs
Mike Holmgren is second with a .667 winning % including playoffs.
Perhaps you heard of them.

MM is #3 with his current winning % of .644. He is a fine coach and I'm happy the Packers have him but he has a way to go to become #1 in winning %. Not to mention that Lombardi won 5 NFL championships including 3 in a row and MM so far has only 1.

Check your facts next time. Thanks, Since '61

Yes, I was wrong. He's behind Holmgren (regular season).

You're welcome. You somewhat missed the main point, as I was responding to a complaint that the Packers aren't committed to winning.

Dear Croat: Lombardi never lost a single player due to the salary cap. He had a perfect record in that regard.

More WRs: After Nelson and Cobb, just a bunch of guys who haven't shown they can produce in a sophisticated NFL passing offense. Until some of them show they can actually do that, the Packers have to keep looking. Nelson, at his age, is on the downward slope and Cobb has his limitations.

I never cared for Brandon Burks, and I have always disdained for Lane Taylor. I have been unimpressed since 2014 when the blocking on special teams was atrocious and I saw him get beat twice on blocked kicks. On the second one I saw, I instantly thought it was Taylor. I've always disliked him so maybe I'm biased. But I think playing Linsley at guard would be a much better idea because he has the strength to deal with massive defensive lineman. I haven't really seen tretter play guard but I can only assume it's better than Lane Taylor. Boy I do not like the idea of him starting on our offensive line.

So many arm chair GM's that have learned their trade from watching it on TV and playing fantasy football. Of course all smarter than TT and if only they could get control..................the Packers would win the SB every year!!! Lighten up guys, Lombardi used to cut or trade guys all the time before they were done. Just like TT, he understood that it's a young man's game and that a fresh influx of young players is very important.

Like the Jhurell Pressley signing. 4.39 40 - will have to be respected in space. Maybe that 3rd down change of pace guy they haven't had. Probably our new kickoff return man.
