Packers hire Boston College coach Jeff Hafley as defensive coordinator

Hafley made his NFL coaching debut with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and worked with the Browns and 49ers before becoming a defensive coordinator at Ohio State.

Matt LaFleur is hiring Boston College head coach Jeff Hafley to be his third defensive coordinator:

Despite coming from the college ranks, Hafley has NFL coaching experience.

In 2012, Hafley made his NFL coaching debut with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and worked with the Browns before becoming a defensive coordinator at Ohio State.

He was a college WR, and he's worked with DBs and as a secondary coach. He's been in the NFL for about 10 years, a lot of 2 year stints, and he started as an assistant DB coach and worked his way to DC in 10 years. So somebody must have thought he was doing a good job because he got promoted several times.

He doesn't have nearly the experience that his predecessor did, but perhaps his youthful energy and new ideas will help improve our defense. I'm glad we got a guy with a background with the secondary, because that's where most of the work on defense is going to have to ta ke place.

He's clearly been brought in to get the secondary cohesive again (links are emerging of past colleagues and players recounting his strong belief in press coverage and sure tackling).

I hope that this doesn't mean that he neglects the D line and edge setting.

I'll have to try and dig up some of those 2019 OSU games.

With the above said, the current vogue in the NFL is for pulling OL, motions and blocking TE\WR's. Navigating traffic and open field tackling prowess are now (again!) critical tasks for LB's and Secondary.

As I understand it, the new head coach for the Seahawks is a young defensive genius recently in the college ranks at Michigan but lately defensive coordinator for the Ravens.
What I'm hoping is that they think this guy from Boston College has an extraordinarily high level of creativity and general competence on the defensive side of the ball, that they're going under the radar to get the next breakthrough coach just needing this opportunity with the Packers to display his brilliance.
I also hope he's prone to blitzing and disdains three-man rushes.
I'm looking forward to hearing what the staff and fans here at CheeseheadTV think about this move.

He's a 4-3 guy. LaFleur is moving the D out of a rut. This guy can coordinate the secondary and let Montgomery control the front end. Gutedkunst has to hit on the right guys to fit the cover CB, Free Safety, DT and a speedy edge rusher. Quite a few RBs in the middle rounds. He knows Pettine's Slot blitz schemes A'la Jaire and Savage who will be replaced.

Remember, he was on a snap count this year.

And if you go back and look at his tape, you will see a guy who's able to shed his block and get to the RB.

FWIW, with the vogue of pulling OL and way better blocking from WR\TE I saw a number of fancied edge rushers have really quiet games (especially against the Packers).

Teams mix it up now and rarely leave their OT's "on an island".

LVN will be fine. If he unselfishly keeps setting the edge and can shed a block, then he will be part of something better than an individual alone can achieve.

The young defensive genius from the Ravens was at the bottom of the league for blitz percentage <17%. The Ravens beat teams defensively by funneling them into the strength of their roster (the middle of the field). No gimmicks.

Also, the Ravens D was 6th in the NFL. Better than competent, but not the best - that would be the 7-10 Jets. #1 defense. Would you trade our year for the Jets year?

We will find out if it’s….be careful what you wish for or not. I think the main thing for a D-Coor is to be flexible and change with the flow of the game. Some press some zone, 3-4 or 4-3 is somewhat irrelevant in today’s NFL. You need to have players who can do either so they can change based on opponents strengths and weaknesses and/or how they are playing the game. It’s a game within a game and I think that is where Barry failed the most.

From ESPN

"The future of the Packers proved a significant allure to Hafley, as they have a strong young core and bright future. He's a longtime friend of Packers coach Matt LaFleur and long-timer admirer of the Packers franchise."

I agree, 13TC, about the uneasiness.
It could be a good thing that the new guy is a longtime friend of LaFleur, but my first reaction to reading it was to cringe.
On the plus side, LaFleur is showing signs that he may be the wunderkind we had hoped for as for as offensive innovation; let's hope this guy is the next big thing on the defensive side of the ball.
Let's also hope that, even as their futures with the Packers are now closely linked, that both of them are leaders of men.

"From ESPN

They never worked together. They were hired by same NFL franchises, but never at the same time. Jeff Hafley worked under Salah (many here wanted Robert Salah, didn't you?) and was at 49ers when MLF brother was there as passing assistent coach (I think it was his title then). He worked with Mike Pettine and under several different coordinators. His coaching job never cross the path with MLF's one. After all, NFL coaching community is small and probably everybody knows 80 to 90% of coaches and coordinators...

There is no doubt he is another longtime, good friend of Matt...similar to Barry. I don't think having the same HC at the same time means much.

More significant...they ran in the same circles. And I am certain guys like Saleh, Shannihan, and even Pettine were key parts of Hafley's vetting.

Another crony hire of ML's which he is prone to do... however Hafley already owns a more impressive coaching resume than Barry by far.

And the D will change in GB (more 4-3, press) and investments will be needed in the middle of the field (LB, S). He has shown an ability to adjust to the game in general and on game days specifically.

"Long-Term friend of Matt LaFleur?"

Yeah, I feel let down, too. He's 44 years old. Barry was 53. When you're working with young men in their 20's is there a perceived difference between a 44 year-old and a 53 year-old? Joe had a lot of energy, remember?

Maybe that's where the recruiting skill set comes in; he's a salesman, and knows a thing or two about play in the secondary. MLFs hiring record leaves much to be desired. Maybe he got this one right?

FWIW, LaFleur and Hafley aren’t close friends as some have reported. He knows Hafley through his brother, Robert Saleh and Kyle Shanahan, all of whom worked with Hafley. They knew each other but weren’t ever on the same staff or guys who spoke often.

Huh? Talk about a curveball and rolling the dice....

He does have experience as an NFL defensive backs coach, and one of his Tampa Bay units had 21 INTs in 2013.

Apparently he is also a fine college recruiter. Well that will certainly help, won't it, LOL?

And of course he is a longtime friend of MLF. Gee, what a surprise!

I can't say I'm overflowing with enthusiasm with this off the wall hire, but at least we do get some experience coaching a secondary that's going to need it. Otherwise, this seems kind of risky for both the team and the head coach's self-preservation.

I'm sure he'll have a blast breaking down all the film and chuckling at some of Barry's crazy alignments and schemes. I wonder what assortment of new assistants he'll bring along--this will be interesting.

Can't wait to hear from this guy. Maybe he'll give us something to get excited about during the long off-season.

Maybe your research is flawed about being a “good friend”. Be careful what you read and believe. I think a good friend is someone you actually spend a good amount of time together. They have and do spend time at the others house, etc…. My understanding is How Mlf mainly knows Hafley is thru his brother and actual friends. They probably have had prior conversations but that doesn’t equate to “good friends” as you portray. That’s a huge difference.

"good friend". Most people bitching about MLF acquaintance with and intersectionality have clearly never hired anyone before. I'd even be surprised if they've had a job. I much prefer working with people I like, who fit my culture and who are qualified for the job. Why on earth would you hire someone you don't get along with, or whose style is contrary to what you envision for your team? It's madness.

Color me crazy, but I actually do better work when I'm happy. I'm relatively sure that applies to others.

All I'm saying is Matt "should" hire complete strangers and never have them over to his house. He should stop making eye contact with subordinates as well.

Oh, yeah, and check your sources, buster!

As to him, the one thing that I find is that he is supposedly an excellent teacher and communicator with the players. That’s a start. At this point nothing else is really clear enough to me to fo an opinion. Some good signs and some negative ones. I’m going to sit in the fence on this one for a while.

By picking a guy off the radar and who has previously acknowledged friendship, LaFleur is really tying himself yo this pick almost as tightly as possible. I hope he’s got it right, because a bad choice could undermine the talent we have for years.

Read that too.

Expect Downard will remain as they have coached together.

Montgomery's ability to remain a D coach is legendary...Hafley is his 4th Packer DC. He hasn't coached a 4 man front in GB, however.

But expect there will be long looks at fits at all the other coaches. Not sure how Olivadotti and Rebrovich fit as current ILB and pass rush specialist coaches respectively going to a 4-3. And Williams may not fit as "passing game coordinator" either.

The Packers need a DC who is ready to take the defense to great heights in year one, not someone learning on the job.

Yep. Their base was a 4-2-5, which is about what Detroit was running as their base at the end of the year.

Barry ran some true 4:3 too, more so very late this year. However, base is about 20 percent of both NFL and BC’s defensive snaps. Almost no one plays base much more than that.

Hafley has coached in both 3:4 and 4:3, but his calling card is single high safety/Cover 1, 43 percent of plays last year. Press dominant, more blitzes. Accepting the risk of a big play as opposed to bend and not break. He’s not Baltimore aggressive but he’s consistently been willing to attack the catch and blitz and trust his DBs. He does seem to adjust significantly to opponents, including his predilection for single high.

This means we are going to need a serious upgrade at deep S. That becomes a premium position. We don’t have one. I don’t see one in the draft that is remotely ready. That’s going to need a good FA. There are some out there, but that probably eats a chunk of our limited cap. The box type are easier to find at least.

There are things to like in his past, there are some potentially significant red flags, but context and talent level make it hard to decipher. I’m firmly on the fence waiting to see. Who stays among coaches and the shape of the defensive draft and any FA will be very interesting.

I think Quay Walker will potentially blossom snd be used more as he was in college and any Safety will be better than under Barry. I am not sure if he wants a robber type as his box, but it might mean Savage might be back. Brooks might also benefit as a hybrid DE/DL in the more 4:3 looks.

This guy is a teacher by all accounts. That’s a good thing. Whether his hiring is a good thing or is a colossal mistake, I really can’t decipher. It’s going to be interesting. It’s certainly not a safe hire, to the extent that it maybe career defining for LaFleur. He doesn’t seem to be very similar to Barry in terms of temperament. That’s a positive start.

Deep S needed a upgrade for years.
And Amos got slow.
How do you pay Savage the 7 mil. avg.
for a player rated @15.?
I thought the secondary played better without him.
Yet MLF still put in a good word for him.
I called him a Coward, after his assists went down.
And he looks like a 4.7 guy now.
Imo there are players in this draft that could do better.
I'd trade up for DeJean and put him at safety.

Can't say I'm completely surprised. LaFleur seems to want people around him he knows and is comfortable with. Not necessarily bad, but if there is one thing I've learned in my life is to be careful hiring friends. If they aren't doing the job, it's more difficult to discipline them/fire them. It tends to be human nature.

Maybe he can bring in Ravens inside linebackers coach Zach Orr in a lateral+ move if he doesn't get an offer. Get some of that aggressiveness in house.

I somewhat agree with giving this guy a fair opportunity.
At the same time, it doesn't seem unreasonable to ask LaFleur why out of all the defensive coaches in the world, this was the right guy to get our defense up to the level of a Super Bowl champion in the next season or two (with a big step forward in 2024).
I'd like to hear some "wow" statements about what this guy has done to merit one of the best jobs in the NFL.
***
We the fans are the customers, which to me means not the right of approval, but the right of holding the management of the Packers accountable.
After Barry and Pettine, we have good reason to be wary of supposed expertise.
As a fan, I'm willing to show some deference to the expertise of the management of the Packers, but not to accept what they do blindly and unconditionally.
It's good to ask questions, and even to express concerns.

That being said, if it ends up being a home run MLF will look like a genius. If it proves a bad choice, it will be the opposite. Let's hope it's the former.

I'm on record hoping this guy knocks it out of the park.

I'm rooting for the new guy, too, but he better be good fast.
If our defense doesn't show significant improvement this upcoming season, then we the fans can rightly show impatience.
That would be true of anyone chosen as our defensive coordinator; but by apparently going to the extreme of obscurity, LaFleur has put even more pressure on himself.
***
We've got a lot of top talent already on our defense, and probably more coming this spring.
As the saying goes, NFL stands for not for long.
That would go for both LaFleur and the new DC.
After the Packers made a great surge this past season to soar into the playoffs, and even got a stunning postseason win, this is no time for dawdling.
I'm rooting for all of our coaches and players to seize the moment.

No point in not rooting for him. He’s our DC now. Our success rests on him doing well. Only time will tell if he improves things and whether this was a defensible hiring choice. So we might as well hope that it was since his record is capable of supporting an argument for either but certainty of neither.

I liked reading the passage below on Packerswire. Jersey Al, are you listening? The first sentence is misleading, though. Hafley was actually co-defensive coordinator for Ohio State, not the sole defensive coordinator:

With Hafley as the defensive coordinator in 2019, Ohio State went from ranking 72nd in yards per play to leading the country in that category. A key teaching point of Hafley’s that season was on tackling, an area where the Packers have been inconsistent at best.

“We don’t just talk about running to the ball,” said Hafley via The Athletic. “To me, the most important thing about tackling is the approach. I got up in front of the whole team, and Ryan had me talking about tackling in front of the whole team.

“I think people spend way too much time just talking about the finish and driving your legs and wrapping up. But people put themselves in such bad positions, where they’re not even close to being in a position to make the play. Everything we do, we just talked about tracking and the angle and the approach and getting yourself in the best position to actually get yourself having a fighting chance to make the tackle. Whether we’re doing a live period or not, we talk about that on every single play.”

About 80% is positioning. The better the positioning, not just angle, but body position and momentum, the less form matters, conversely the worse, the more form can save you. It’s harder to teach form these days. It is much more dependent on full speed repetition, but positioning is teachable. Some of that comes from coaching though: are players put in a position that makes positioning attainable regularly? Barry was particularly questionable at that in my opinion.

I can’t take anything he did at BC and correlate it to NFL DC. He was the head coach at BC with DC and OC under him. His composite talent ratings (college recruiting sites track this) at BC is below average and BC is not a football power so on field results /expectations were to make a bowl and that is it. College head coach skill set doesn’t necessarily translate to the NFL. He was a co DC on a good Ohio state defense but…Ohio state has, unlike BC, an overwhelming talent advantage in 90% of their games so cannot out alot of stock in that either.

…his NFL experience is long ago. Can’t tell if he did a good job or not as it was so long ago. Most of the teams stunk but who really knows what part he played in that.

Friend of ML…huh. I don’t care all that much about that but…if he was NOT a friend if ML, would another coach with this resume get the job? Doubt it.

As someone else posted…he hasn’t failed as an NFL DC like Barry had before being hired. But…I think other potential options would instill more optimism. I also think this hire puts additional scrutiny on ML and his coaching hires. Not pressure, but really opens himself to more criticism if defense doesn’t show vast improvement.

I looked up the Bucs, Browns, and 49ers for the seasons that Hafley was with them, and not a single one of those teams managed to finish .500 or above. None of the defenses were good either. The 49ers got good the year after he left. Hafley was just coaching defensive backs, so he had a relatively small role. Still, it would be more encouraging if he had been on a successful NFL defensive coaching staff at some point. The one year with Ohio State was the only year he was with an organization that was any more than one game above .500. (In two of his seasons at Boston College, they finished one game above .500.)

My first thought was who? He coached the DB's and secondary starting in 2004 in college for a couple of teams before going to the NFL in 2012. Starting with Tampa, he also had experience in Cleveland and San Francisco. He worked for 2 years on the 49ers defense under Saleh. It sounds like a 180 turn from Joe Barry, with frequent blitzing and more man to man instead of zone. One of the BC reporters said he likes the single high deep and Packers should see heavier fronts and more of an attacking style. A new scheme could benefit a few players, especially Alexander and Stokes. Richard Sherman spoke highly of him today, talking about when he played for SF. We can only hope and be happily surprised come next season.

Okay correct me if I'm wrong but he spends two years as d coordinator at one team. Then with that experience he doesnt jump up to a D coaching job with another team but another d coordinator then two years later the same.
So it six years, if I'm counting right he was never thought highly enough to go up the rung to d coach.
So he leaves the NFL who he figures doesnt want him, and goes to BC where he had a so so record at best as hc.
Now after 6 years he doesnt like the fact he cant get the players via portal and all of a sudden is just available for us to save his life?
Why do I get the feeling he called LeFluer not the other way around. You can bet he was a lot cheaper option then the fine individuals we supposedly were interviewing. To me this is total bull shit and were in deep do do next year as this guy tries to figure out how to coach and entire defense in the NFL.

Hello everyone and greetings. I know everyone one of us are different and we all have different views. Mlf went and looked for young experienced positions coaches who've never
Been defensive coordinators. We'll see next year. I'm of a different mindset, There are several very experienced and well esteemed defensive coaches who have been excluded from mlf approach and choice. Let's take a look at who've been overlooked. Lesley Frazier, wink martindale, rivera, lovey Smith, an excellent defensive coach with hc experience as well.
Then there's Vrabel, now he was mlf coach at Tennessee. I believe asside of looking for hc gig , he wouldn't come to gb under mlf , because of pride, The great Bellicick, would he have come as dc? I have no idea. Would of loved him as hc and the flower at of. I believe one of these coaches would have a much better choice. Does this new coach know how to call plays,or does he have to take lessons this off season to learn.? I don't like the choice, let's hope he doesn't need next just for learning on the job. I don't know!

In an interview at BC he emphasized scheming to stop QB runs. One does see more of that at the college level but it is increasingly important in the NFL. I can see an argument for wanting someone who at least has tried to figure that out in a division with Fields (maybe) and who knows what in Minn. Certainly going to have to figure it out for any deep post season run.
