Packers Have a Decision to Make on ILB De’Vondre Campbell

Green Bay Packers GM Brian Gutekunst held his latest press conference at the NFL Scouting Combine earlier this week. The GM discussed many issues regarding the state of the team including the fact that the Packers believe they can contend for a Super Bowl this coming season.

Gutekunst also touched on some difficult decisions that lie ahead including the future of former All Pro inside linebacker De’Vondre Campbell.

Campbell has three years remaining on the five-year deal he signed with the team prior to the 2022 season. He will turn 31 on July 1 which makes him one of the older players on the team’s current roster.

According to spotrac.com, Campbell will have a cap hit of a little more than $14.2 million in 2024 under his current contract. The Packers would save approximately $2.6 million by releasing the former University of Minnesota star. It would also cost the Packers a little more than $11.6 million in dead cap money.

There are several factors for Gutekunst to consider before he makes a decision on Campbell. The first is the level of Campbell’s play. Since his All-Pro season of 2021, Campbell has not come close to matching that level of play.

In 2021, Campbell was all over the field making plays. He led the team with 146 tackles, intercepted two passes and added two sacks when blitzing the quarterback. Campbell was making stops against the run and effective in coverage. He allowed only 4.9-yards per target when opposing quarterbacks threw to receivers he was covering. They rarely gained many yards after the catch.

Injuries have definitely played a role in the decline of his play over the last two seasons. Campbell missed four games in 2022 and six games in 2023 due to injury. He played hurt in many other games and even expressed his frustration about playing hurt late last season.

Gutekunst expressed an interest in keeping Campbell if the money makes sense. “I’d love to have De’Vondre back,” Gutekunst said earlier this week. “We’re going through all that, contract stuff right now. We’ll kind of see how it all shakes out. Obviously, we just got the cap number. We’re working through some of that stuff, but he’s been an ultimate pro for us, a really good player. We’ll kind of see where that goes.”

Is Gutekunst confident Campbell can return to form in 2023, or is his body breaking down as he gets older and sustains more injuries?

Campbell also provides leadership in the locker room. As one of only a handful of players over 30, Campbell is respected and has seen all there is to see in the NFL. On the field, the players respect him. Off the field, Campbell has been very involved in the community and was the Packers nominee for the 2023 NFL Man of the Year Award. He founded the De’Vondre Campbell Family Youth Foundation in 2019.

In training camp in 2022, former Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers described Campbell as “the leader of the defense” and pointed to how he was helping some of the younger players learn the ropes.

The Packers will have a new defensive system next season with Jeff Hafley taking over for Joe Barry. The team will now employ a four-man front instead of a three-man front which will change the role of off-ball linebackers like Campbell.

Hafley and head coach Matt LaFleur have to determine if Campbell would be a good fit in the new system. They also need to figure out where he would best fit in.

The team is thin at linebacker as we enter free agency and the draft. Other than Campbell, the only players the Packers have with significant NFL experience are Quay Walker and Isaiah McDuffie.

If they part ways with Campbell, Gutekunst will have to add some players in the draft and/or free agency. Rookies may not be ready to contribute significantly in their first season. Teams often have to overpay for top free agents. Low-cost free agents are unlikely to match Campbell’s production and leadership on the field.

Another option would be to try to restructure Campbell’s deal or have him take less money to stay on the team. Obviously, that would be up to Gutekunst, Campbell, and his agent.

The decision on Campbell won’t be an easy one. If Hafley feels Campbell will be a good fit in his defense, it’s probably wise to keep Campbell for one more season. But of course, there are risks involved.

Campbell may never play to the level of his 2021 All-Pro season, but he could still be capable of playing at a high level.

We’ll soon know if De’Vondre Campbell will return to Green Bay for a fourth season in Green and Gold.

I think his being “disgruntled “ was overblown.

He was disgruntled because he was paly through an injury and he felt that Berry was not putting the defense in a position to win.

Campbell will be here this season but he will have to restructure his contract, If he won't do it then he will be cut simple as that. He's a good player when healthy but he's getting older and his position calls for a lot of hard hitting contact so we shall see soon enough. Personally, I hope he stays and takes a pay cut like Preston did, now there's a player who should get a lot of RESPECT he has taken pay cuts twice now just to stay a Packer and his performance has never wavered.

Kind of a one hit wonder, whose one great year came in his contract year. Sometimes we make bad contract decisions. Apparently, we pay him $14 million to play, or cut him and pay $12 million. He's 31 years old, coming off two down/injury years. One exceptional year in his entire career. It's a no win situation for the Pack. Hey, maybe he'll stay healthy, have a decent year, and then we can move on. Glad I'm not the decision maker.

a one hit wonder if your field of reference goes back only as far as Arizona maybe. He had a terrific career in Atlanta. He played both strong and weakside linebacker in a Dan Campbell defense. He played with speed. He started at linebacker as a rookie in the damn super bowl.

A lot of fans want to part ways with him given his age and recent injury history. I was strongly in favor of re-signing him after his stellar 2021 season, but it hasn't worked out since. The Packers can save around $10.5 million if they cut him after June 1. But if they do this, what is the plan going forward? Right now I'm leaning towards cutting him and trying to either sign a reasonably priced free agent or giving a promising rookie a shot. Doing the latter may seem risky, but since we're in the middle of a defensive facelift, other things are going to be uncertain as well... It's a tougher call than it seems on paper, hopefully one that Gute gets right.

You are saving now and paying later by cutting him after 1 June. If he can play SLB which I believe he is not suited for we should keep him because it does not pay to cut him. If he is willing to take a pay cut then yes we shoud keep him as a back up.

I agree. Campbell is scheduled to earn $10.75M in cash. He is scheduled to earn $8.875M in both 2025 and 2026. I expect the cap to exceed $280M in 2025 and over $300M in 2026. $8.875M with a $280M or a $300M cap probably will look cheap if Campbell is only average.

The continual references to the drop off in performance from his all-pro season are annoying. GB never paid Campbell all-pro money, which is in the $19M to $20M per year area. GB paid him half of that at $10M AAV.

I do think Campbell was somewhat better than an average ILB in 2023, and that plus missing games means he was overpaid. But I don't think this is strictly or just about Campbell.

GB needs cap relief. Campbell and Bakh are the two places to get double digit cap savings. I expect to get $3M to $5M from Jones and at least a couple of million from Clark. Just estimating and inserting some opinion about how much GB should clear to spend on free agency, BUT I think they need $22M or so from Bakh and Campbell? There is only alexander left otherwise.

Campbell is due to earn roughly $10.5 million in salary/roster bonus/workout bonus/etc. this year which is likely more than he could earn on the free agent market given his age and recent injury history. Since the Packers only save $2.6 million by cutting him this year (without a June 1 designation which just pushes dead cap into 2025), it would seem that a compromise should be in order. Campbell could take a salary reduction which would still leave him with a contract greater than he could get in free agency and give the Packers some cap relief. Something very similar to what Preston Smith just did.

Maybe they split the difference with Campbell taking a $1.3 million reduction and the Packers get $1.3 million in cap relief and get to keep the player (provided Hafley wants him).

"(provided Hafley wants him)"

I never even thought about that. If he doesn't want some of these guys, he can't expect the Packers to just cut them loose and eat the cap, can he?

Hope they decide soon and maybe they can work in a trade with another team or at least give him time to work out a deal with someone.

The Packers won't cut a guy just on Hafley's say so, but I'm sure they will discuss with Hafley whether a guy fits the new scheme and what the cap savings would be if they let him go. Hafley will have a voice in the process.

This is exactly the "stay in your lane" point of the conversation. While I'm sure that they'll consult with Hafley and LaFleur, roster is the domain of the front office. As it should be. Hierarchy and all that. Draft talented football players, leave it to the coaches to get the best of them.

Not at all. If Hafley doesn't see a fit for him in his defense why spend the extra $2.6 million? I don't think that's the case but when your switching schemes you better let the coach have some input or you'll both be looking for work before too long.

Hafly isn't an assistant coach, much less a cashier. He is a Defensive Coordinator - a highly paid executive in the corporation at probably over $1.5M per year. He gets a listen, at least.

Yes, as does a cashier. As likely does a VP of Finance get a consideration. At the end of the day, Hafley is not a personnel man, he is a coach. The front office isn't a collective, it's a hierarchy. Hafley has no idea what the available talent pool is, what is possible in regards to recruitment, what the available funding is. Halfley doesn't spend a year reviewing pro personnel rosters and college rosters. He doesn't work with the salary cap. If Campbell is the best linebacker that we can provide at that position, Hafley works with Campbell, end of story.

Hafley has a part to play, it's to coach the players he's provided. You don't get new linebackers at the linebacker store.

Next year makes more sense to me as far as cutting him. They only gain around $1.9 million in additional savings but his cap hit would go down almost $4 million by waiting a year. The fact that Gutey even talked about him says to me they'd like to keep him. The big thing is not pushing anymore of his money out. That's why his dead cap is so high as it is.

I think you've hit the bullseye when you said that a compromise should be in order.

Campbell will be 31 when this season starts. He has already made about $35M playing football. This is it. A chance to go out on top and get that photo of him with the Lombardi Trophy he can hang on the wall. And that's probably why it was extra frustrating to be hurt last season, because he knows there aren't many more shots for him, and then the sniping about how he was having a "down" season, and may be in decline. That kind of stuff is hard for a proud person to live with.

Anyway, I can't believe Hafley would throw away a perfectly good player because he "didn't want him". And we could certainly use him.

If he can still play the next season, he'd be about $8M. None of it guaranteed. So we can keep him if he can play and try for the Elway Ending, and cut him at no cost if he's not. Or he could retire and take a nice job with the team . Or he could go to Fiji .

This can be worked out. It's starting to look like the Packers are getting ready to offer some FA contracts, but they're not going to save enough money by releasing Campbell to make up for what he brings

The only question is his health and availability. It's not like Smith where he's always available.

If he believes in his health, he'll take a team friendly per play incentive deal and prove his worth but still make allot of money that won't show on the cap before the season.

Campbell was an all pro in 2021 and has been in decline ever since; especially the last two years. The reality shows he was a one year wonder. He will be 31 years old at the start of the season. Why would anyone assume his decline will not continue? He is one of the reasons teams have been able to run the ball successfully the past few seasons. This is why we need to target the best ILB in the draft. If the safety we are looking for is not there at 25 it would make sense to take what is generally assumed to be the top ILB in the draft post combine. Probably Edgerin Cooper. If we go with Safety then pray Cooper is there at 41. There will be more certainty about all the players when the combines end next week. If Cooper performs better than expected at the combine he for sure will go in the first round. This all assumes we do not find a CB/S or ILB in free agency. We need a dynamic ILB to tandem with Quay if we expect our defense to be great. It's just that simple.

WD - I agree. A two year decline in health and production is more indicative of a downward trend (more so at his age) than it is a simple hiccup in his career. Putting resources and time into him just to find out which side of this he falls on is irresponsible. That's the business side of it. Sometimes leaving emotions and feelings out of the decision making process is the best practice. I like him personally as a fan. I loved his play three years ago. I also wish him the very best going forward. I wish building an NFL team was more like playing with a basket full of puppies, but it's a high dollar, high risk game. I think your assessment of it is/was spot on.

Also, one of the reasons his game has fallen off since his All-Pro season is that when he came here, he was promised to play "Mike" which is why he claimed he did better in GB. He said that on other Ds he was bounced around and it hurt his game. Once Walker was drafted, he went back to bouncing around.

We tend to overlook this fact. The Packers played a lot more 2-ILB sets after Walker was picked, which changed how they use Campbell. In 2021, he played virtually all the defensive snaps...the other ILBs combined for about 60%. ILB snaps expanded significantly in 2022.

Cooper, Colson, and Wilson, you could throw a blanket over them as they are similar in ability. Wilson and Colson are better coverage LBs so they are better all around than Cooper.

Cooper is definitely not good enough to be the #25 pick or #41. This is not a fabulous LB group in this years draft. Probably the weakest in 5 years. 2 LBs that will be picked later and are pretty decent all around are Trevin Wallace & Tyrice Knight. They will be around in the 4th round which will be about right since the first 5 picks will probably be OL, S, CB, OL, and RB.

If Campbell gets released, and he will be if he doesn't agree to a pay cut, we will sign a FA that can stay on the field. Cheap but talented would be Blake Cashman @ probably $3 or $4 million per year. I would love a shot @ Devin White, who could be reasonable coming off his first down year. Projected @ maybe $7 million per year. Both guys are under 25.

IMO, the Packers would be foolish to quibble over $2.5M. He's a good football player who can help lead the defense. Especially since after this season, he's still under contract to us for 2 more years and none of the money is guaranteed, so we can play him or trade him or cut him or whatever we want.

He's a good player. How many snaps can he play? 50%? 70% Does he help provide some leadership to a bunch of fart-lighters? Yeah, I think he does and it's well worth the very small sum we'd save by releasing him.

There's still some pro-rated signing bonus and some void-year money that needs to be accounted for that accelerates against the cap,, but--yes--the bonus money is pretty much gone. Once they pay his roster bonus (3/15), he's pretty much staying put for 2024. As TGR accurately points out, even if you replace him with a rookie, most of his 2024 savings would be gone..but I wouldn't be surprised to see some wrangling around his cap number before then, either through a modest pay cut or converting salary/roster bonus to signing bonus.

I think part of this decision is how shaky his play has been for 2 years in a row now. It sucks to owe him this much money still, but players not being on the team anymore and still owing them money is the evil of pushing money back to create cap room. It will happen every year. Does he become a very expensive backup? Is that worth it? Does him being on the team make us better or worse, and can we count on him? Same as with Bahk.

I think we will see 2 scenarios with Campbell. Either he takes a big pay cut and stays with GB for another year. Or He gets cut with a June 1st date to save $10 million. I don't think he is tradeable at all.

We need a decent FA LB or 2 if the price is right. I could see Blake Cashman and Devin White signed for projected $10 million total per year. We would have 2 young, talented, LBs that play like their hair is on fire.

We still should draft a LB this year. Guys who looked really strong yesterday at the combine were Payton Wilson-he might have jumped into the 2nd round after his 4.4 40-yard dash. Trevin Wallace was also impressive. He ran 4.6 and excelled in the drills. I was really impressed with his hands catching the ball. We might have to get him @ #88 or #91. He looks very athletic. Colson and Gray are also good and probably picked 3rd or 4th rounds.

Drafting a LB before the 4th round probably means we pick only one O-lineman on Days 1 & 2. Hopefully we can still find good ones later.

Campbell had four really good years as both a strongside and weakside linebacker in Atlanta in a Dan Campbell defense. He had a mixed year in Arizona before he got to Green Bay.

While I'm not advocating for keeping or cutting him I'm just making the point that he's not chopped liver. Campbell is just two seasons from being a first team all-pro. Guys like that don't just fall out of trees. You don't go to the linebacker store and replace talent.

The Packers don't draft ILBs.
WE draft OLbs and put them inside.
Based on what Gute traded for.
Campbell would be better than any
Gute alternative.
So if your looking for Ray Nitscke, don't.
Campbell should stay.!
Because you're either going to get a late pick.
OLB, or a prayer at Ilb anyway.
We were lucky we got him.

There are a few in the draft that would work Stock, but it's going to have to fall right for us to get one. All of our picks in rounds 3 thru 7 are late in the round, so if there are any GB likes, they will be overdrafted. We might have a tough choice to make @ #91, if we want a top RB to replace Jones, or if a top 4 LB is still there.

Unless we end up trading back for an extra 2nd or 3rd rounder, we probably are picking one @ #128. Gray could still be there, he is ok all around but missed a lot of tackles @ N Carolina. Wallace-Kentucky and Knight-UTEP are just as good and probably 4th rounders.

A trade up in the 4th wouldn't cost more than a 6th or 7th. Or possibly a move back from # 88 or #91 into the early 4th for 2 more picks would work too.

Maybe the answer will be 2 reasonable FAs. Some people don't like my Bobby Wagner suggestion, but he led the NFL in tackles and would improve our run defense 100%. Projected to get $5 or $6 million per year. Pair him with Blake Cashman and we are probably looking at less than $10 million total per year. We would only need Wagner for 2 years as a bridge to whoever we draft this year or in 2025.

Are you seriously saying our run D wouldn't improve alot? He is not as good in coverage, but would we really need him to be? Wagner would be a cheap, better than average upgrade for Campbell. And think of the leadership and LB teaching he would bring to Walker and the others.

As we're a little thin at LB now, I'd like to see him stay but I don't think he's the same guy who got the big contract 2 years ago. My concerns are his injuries, his age, his contract and lastly, his attitude at the end of last season. The last comment may be overblown as some people suggest, but it is worrisome.

If (1) our new coaching staff can put him in better situations to succeed, (2) he gets healthier and (3) his contract can be made more team friendly this season, I'd love to see him back.

I think we probably keep him for at least 1 season to see if he can make the transition. When healthy, his skills should transfer over. I bet we keep Isaiah McDuffie too. He played for Hafley in college and Hafley knows exactly how he wants to use him. Walker of course will make a good Will.. But if we draft a stud LB or pick up a decent one in FA, I could see Campbell falling to a situational or rotational role.

I've come to the conclusion he'll be on the team in 2024, so now the question becomes...How?

We'll start off on a 4-3, and he'll be the MLB on that, protected by some pretty good DTs. I'd assume Quay Walker would be one of the other guys. When we only play 2 LBs on the field, it looks to me like it's Walker and Campbell. But you need some guys who can play with them, and it looks like most of them are being cast as DEs.

This gives us a superabundance of DE/DL under contract for next year: Smith, Gary, Van Ness, Brooks, Wooden, Clark, Slaton, Wyatt. That's 9DL that are under contract, and that's how many we'd have on the gameday roster.

If we're going to keep our best players on the field, we might want to have some guys who can have some postion flexibility.

I'm kind of curious as to who we might see lining up over the TE.

I would keep him this season and deal with a possible replacement next season...We are trying to get to the show, not create holes. FA FS and SS. Matter of fact I would use the 2-ILB's and a bigger box Safety. The main thing is we go get a FA free Safety who is a top tier player available. GPG

Below is reply from the "imposter" known as Dragon5 to CHTV article from last March that questioned whether Amos should be retained...Campbell was addressed as well. 20/20, ask yourself how both did in their enemy year...

Absolutely NOT. CAT YEAR, Amos is a ROOSTER. CAT & ROOSTER enemy signs. Next man up.

D Campbell is the only other ROOSTER on the roster. Hope Gute has a MIKE plan B ready given Barnes is gone; McDuffie is the only other inside LB, currently behind Quay Walker. Jack Campbell would fit the bill.

So, a roster with a rooster is like a poster who’s an imposter, right?"

I mean, astrology- western, eastern, or otherwise- really is ridiculous.
By this logic, all a team has to do to succeed is know what year / sign a player was born under. Entire drafts would produce excellent players almost without fail, other drafts should be completely avoided.

That just doesn't make any sense.

No drama, the decisions on Campbell and Savage are already made inside the building - the Packers are looking to upgrade both spots. Perfectly reasonable decisions on both players.

With Campbell, if he has a bad attitude, thats a problem. I would expect him to be a professional and try to play his best for the team. And for the obscene amount of money he is making in 2024.

I am more concerned with his substandard play and all the games he has missed the last 2 years. Nobody knows how he will play this year if we keep him, but we do know 99% of pro players don't get better or healthier as they age. He is on the wrong side of 30 and GB screwed the pooch with his contract. We might have to bite the bullet, so the team keeps moving forward.

The Packers have 2 options. Sign a good, older, reasonable vet to bridge the team until a drafted LB can take over. Or stay with the youth movement and sign at least one good, young, talented FA LB like Devin White or Blake Cashman. Or both because they are projected to get under $10 million per year all together. That would let us push the need to next year and we could strengthen OL, RB, or S through the draft.

LBs who helped themselves @ the combine were Payton Wilson, Trevin Wallace, and Cedric Gray. Cooper is still a late 2nd round pick, but Wilson might have pushed past him with that 4.4 40 yard dash he ran. Wallace looked really good in all drills, and we might be able to snag him @ #91. He is uber athletic.

Bull$hit, it was on all the Packers websites. He was unhappy because he had been playing badly and he said in interviews that it was because he had been playing hurt. And he wasn't going to do it anymore. That sounds disgruntled to me.

If you look at the direct quotes, I don't think Campbell was disgruntled with the coaching, the team, or his team mates. I think he was talking to either sports media or sports fans regarding his playing injured, and frankly, I wouldn't blame him.

Imagine your coaches/team asking you to step up and play injured because they believe your play, even at 75%, still helps the team more than playing a lesser player at 100% hurts- so you put on your big boy pants, prep and play through the pain to the best of your ability to help your team- and then immediately after the game local sports writers and fat bastards sitting on bar stools start talking about how you played like hot garbage and should be let go.

Campbell also complained when
Gary went down.
He was upset about the turf.
