Packers Daily Links: Training Camp Night Practices On the Outs

Head coach Mike McCarthy acknowledged that night practices at training camp may be over. That and more in today's Daily Links...

Because of changes in the NFL's newest collective bargaining agreement eliminating two-a-day practices, night-time sessions during training camp appear to be over in Green Bay. "Although the night practices McCarthy instituted upon his arrival in 2006 were very popular with fans, McCarthy said they’re likely a thing of the past," writes Jason Wilde of ESPNMilwaukee.com. "He joked that while general manager Ted Thompson will likely be happy about the night practices ending, he feels bad that the team had to install lights to accommodate the workouts." The Packers are waiting to finalize their training camp schedule until they find out if they'll be playing in the NFL's annual kickoff game that the New York Giants will host as reigning Super Bowl champions.

More on the elmination of night-time training camp practices comes from the Green Bay Press-Gazette.

After appearing as if free agent Anthony Hargrove was Green Bay-bound, nothing––at this point––is imminent. "(Ted) Thompson, stopping to talk with reporters in a hallway at The Breakers during the annual NFL Meetings, would not confirm that a deal is close with Hargrove, who visited the team on Friday and apparently has been Tweeting as if a deal is imminent," writes Jason Wilde.

Perhaps the Packers are waiting to find out if Anthony Hargrove will be subject to discipline from the NFL for his role in "Bountygate" as a former member of the New Orleans Saints defense in 2009 and 2010. "Commissioner Roger Goodell said that punishment is looming for current and former members of the New Orleans Saints who took part in the cash bounties that have resulted in harsh penalties to coach Sean Payton, defensive coordinator Gregg Williams and general manager Mickey Loomis," writes Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Hargrove was fined by the NFL for a late hit put on former Packers quarterback, then playing for the Minnesota Vikings, in the NFC Championship game during the 2009 season.

General manager Ted Thompson told reporters how the Packers are active in researching free agency every year even if they don't sign anyone. “I know you guys don’t believe me, but we’re always active in free agency,” Thompson told the Press-Gazette. “There have been a couple of years here in a row where we haven’t actually signed anybody, but that doesn’t mean that we weren’t active, pursuing leads, trying to understand the market and doing all that. In the case of Jeff Saturday, we were able to address a specific need that we felt like we needed to address because we were unable to re-sign Scott (Wells). We would’ve liked to have Scott back, but we’re happy now that we have Jeff Saturday.”

More on Ted Thompson and free agency comes from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and ESPNMilwaukee.com.

The awarding of four compensatory draft picks to the Packers by the NFL was big news at yesterday's league owners meeting. "On Monday, the league awarded the Packers four compensatory picks - the maximum a team can receive in a given year - for its free agent losses in 2011. The Packers were awarded two fourth-round and two seventh-round picks in the April draft, raising their overall total to 12," writes Tom Silverstein. The Packers were awarded draft picks for their losses of Cullen Jenkins, Daryn Colledge, Brandon Jackson, Jason Spitz and Korey Hall in free agency. With those 12 picks this year, it should be a very active draft for the Packers.

More on compensatory draft choices come from Packer Report, the Press-Gazette and ESPNMilwaukee.com, twice.

Head coach Mike McCarthy expressed his likeness for the NFL's new proposed injured reserve rule that would allow one player per season to return to action by Week 8 in the NFL. "I think that’s common sense,” McCarthy told Jason Wilde. “We’ve been through it. You have guys go on IR at the beginning of the year, and you’re sitting there in November and he’s working out in the weight room, and (you say to yourself), ‘I wish I had him for this week.’ That’s happened to me a number of times.” One player used as an example is running back Ryan Grant who was injured in Week 1 of the 2010 season, but probably could have come back late in the season if rules allowed him to do so.

Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie told reporters that he asked for Mike McCarthy's permission to interview Packers assistant Winston Moss for Oakland's head-coaching vacancy. "McCarthy’s decision to grant permission for the interview seemingly supersedes the (anti-tampering) rule," writes Rob Demovsky.

More on Reggie McKenzie and his interview of Winston Moss comes from ESPNMilwaukee.com.

In other news related to Reggie McKenzie, he talked to Jason Wilde about the signing of Pat Lee.

Mike McCarthy discussed his frustration with rules that limit his offseason quarterback school.

Mike McCarthy was mum on the topic of his interaction with Gregg Williams for the defensive coordinator job back in 2009.

The possibility of the Packers signing free agent Demitrius Bell is discussed by the Press-Gazette, JSOnline and ProFootballTalk.com.

A draft profile on San Jose State safety Duke Ihenacho and his connection to the Packers appears at JSOnline.

i think that all of the cut backs on practice time, the result of player/league negotiations and review, hurts the packers a lot.

they're obviously "in" to this whole draft - and - develop thing, which means that they're always going to have a large number of young/inexperienced players all over the roster (more than most teams). these young guys really benefited from all the contact that they had with coaches. not as much time for development.

i also think that the strength of this team is it's preparation. when practice time is taken away, the playing field gets leveled. it becomes more about player vs. player ability and less about preparation. the gap between a strong coaching staff and a weak one is lessened.
