Packers Daily Links: Tailgate Tour Starts Today

The Packers' Tailgate Tour starts today with a stop in Marquette, Mich. That and more in today's Daily Links...

The Packers' five-stop tour of Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula begins today with a stop in Marquette, Mich at the Superior Dome. "Each Tailgate Tour stop will be hosted by a local non-profit organization and will feature a flavor of famous Lambeau Field tailgating food, giveaways, Tour celebrity question-and-answer sessions, and autographs," according to the Packers official website. Their nightly stop is only the culmination of the Tour. Each day the tour typically stops at local schools along the way.

A sendoff is being held at 7:45 a.m. in the Lambeau Field parking lot this morning, according to Tony Walter of the Green Bay Press-Gazette via Twitter.

Third-round draft choice Alex Green's college position coach was interviewed for a feature article on the new Packers' running back at the team's official website. “From day one we’re throwing him in with the first team and getting him a lot of reps to get him to learn the stuff as fast as we can, because we knew he was very talented,” Hawaii running backs coach Brian Smith said. “He was real good with film, kind of a visual learner, seeing things in practice, so he picked up what we were doing pretty fast.” Green will need to pick up things real fast if the NFL doesn't allow for an offseason program with their lockout currently in place.

Speaking of the lockout, how it will affect the Packers and the rest of the NFL is touched upon by Rob Demovsky of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. Demovsky cites league spokesman Greg Aiello who is responding to reports that the NFL is considering a set of rules under which free agency can operate. “Our goal has at all times been the same – to operate under a negotiated set of procedures that are agreed to by the clubs and NFLPA," said Aiello. "The current litigation has created a significant amount of uncertainty and we are therefore considering a wide range of alternatives depending on developments.” Whether or not those free agency rules mirror those of 2010 remain to be seen.

Gregg Rosenthal of ProFootballTalk.com responded to comments made by linebacker A.J. Hawk that other player-organized workouts across the league have been a disaster. "Hawk’s point is well taken; this isn’t the 1970?s," writes Rosenthal. "Most players are going to stay in condition and you can’t simulate the installation of schemes without coaches." That being said, it wouldn't hurt the players to get together for some seven-on-seven sessions over a weekend if the lockout continues.

The Packers finally got a return man says Michael Rodney in a column at Packer Update. "One of the reasons it took Thompson so long to find a legitimate returner is because he was looking for a player who could also help out on offense or defense," writes Rodney referring to the drafting of Randall Cobb. "That narrowed the field of candidates considerably. There are usually at least a half-dozen experienced and productive returners available in every draft, but the vast majority of those players really don’t project to another position at the next level."

Discussing whether the Packers got a steal in the fourth-round with cornerback Davon House is Brandon Benson of Acme Packing Company. "I have a lot of respect for the learning curve at cornerback in the NFL," writes Benson. "There's a lot they have to be coached on, and they have to watch a lot of film to learn the tendencies of teams and quarterbacks. It took CB Tramon Williams and FS Nick Collins a couple seasons to figure it all out, and the quick arrival of CB Sam Shields is unusual. We should see some glimpses of what he can do, but I don't expect he'll be a finished product for a couple seasons. He should be the 5th or 6th cornerback in 2011."

New Packers draft choice Ricky Elmore shared on Twitter a picture of himself and linebacker Brady Poppinga working out together.

Funny, Brady working with Ricky Elmore. I think Pop will be the odd man out in regards to the OLB position. Nice to see guys reaching out to the rooks, though.
