Packers Calendar: Pads or No Pads at Practice?

Packers head coach Mike McCarthy hasn't decided whether the team will practice in pads or not on Thursday at training camp.

For a team that's been racking up injuries early in training camp, Packers head coach Mike McCarthy is faced with a decision whether to practice with pads or not on Thursday, the day before the team's first preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals.

The Packers have already lost Bryan Bulaga for the season with a torn ACL and wide receiver Jordy Nelson for the rest of training camp after undergoing knee surgery.

There's a slew of others nursing less serious injuries, and the hitting is only going get more intense once the preseason action starts.

Thursday was originally supposed to be a day where the team was suited up in full pads, but as of Wednesday, McCarthy wasn't sure whether they'd maintain the status quo.

"We'll find out," said McCarthy. "Those are decisions that we have a 4:30 staff meeting, and we'll look at that."

During the regular season, the Packers would never have a full-blown practice the day before a game, but during training camp, there's a whole lot more to accomplish.

McCarthy stressed the difficulty of trying to install his schemes during the same week the team would be trying to prepare for their first preseason opponent.

And with the league's newest collective bargaining agreement limiting the amount of practice time and time spent in pads, everything is more compressed.

Regardless of whether they practice in pads or shells, the team will be out at Ray Nitschke Field at 8:20 a.m. CT in a session that will be open to the public.

As tempting as it may sound, a coach simply cannot play "bubble-wrapped football". Injuries happen, injuries are going to happen; if not in practice then certainly during the run of play. The choice for MM is whether he wants to be blamed for injuries in practice, or get blamed for not being ready on game day.
