Thanks Aaron!

LVN upon closer look after Family Night just needs technique development- but it was noticeable at times. Tonight about the same.

Lots to LOVE about this one, in their first test in preseason action. Toure. Valentine. Wilson. Jonathan Ford. Clifford. Love. Doubs. Reed. Wyatt.

Gotta watch it again.

You've got to be excited with how many first and second year players made big plays tonight. The 80-yard TD run by Wilson was a thing of beauty. Just hoping we can squeeze às many of those youngsters on the practice squad. Kudos to the GM for drafting and finding all this young talent

You can’t always make a ton of determinations on the first pre-season game but one thing was clear tonight, the Packers played noticeably faster than the Bengals did in all phases tonight. Good 1st game showing.

One thing that jumped out at me was the incredibly fast “get off” at the snap by the DL. I’ll have to watch it again to see who exactly it was, but the DL speed off the ball was consistently impressive!

It was several! I was especially impressed by our biggest D lineman, #99 J Ford, 6'5 338#. He's awfully fast for such a big man! #90 Luke Ness Monster showed some speed. As predicted sheer bullrush isn't enough in this league and he needs to add skills.

Our O line also kept the pocket clean for a large portion of the game, which was good to see especially against a very good team. Even if we played #1 more while they sat most of their starters.

Agreed in general and in particular with reference to Jonathan Ford. (I had fun writing in that fusty style.) Did you notice how many snaps Ford lined up wide, perhaps as far out as 4i? GB needs to move him up to play against #2s and if possible, some #1s.

I didn't notice that as much as I should have, but depth and versatility will hopefully add some nasty surprises in defensive scheme this season :)

I saw great energy but not huge amounts of nasty. Appropriate for preseason.

Thought Ford was a steal last year R7. He was technique raw, but had that immense size. Not a FATTY! He is a very well CUT 6-5 337!!! And, he can move.

What I really love is that Jonathan Ford 99 and TJ Slaton 93 were childhood friends in Florida! Pretty cool.

They both were great Day 3 additions from their draft classes. Especially when you consider their draft classes were not considered the best, not even close.

Had some stats on TJ Slaton showing he was far more productive than Christian Barmore as a rookie, and was considered the most Pro-ready DL in the draft. Love Slaton!!! Love Ford too. Great value picks by Gutekunst & his staff.

Draftscout lists 4.57 at his pro day and 4.58 at the combine but only as a handheld time, no electronic time. Fact is his times from his pro day don't correspond well with what we've seen in practice and this game.

If it’s manual, may be varied readings? I went with SI and the score RAS used. I note he seems more elusive/less straight line than his RAS scores suggest—something I saw from the film I found when we signed him too.

As you say, speed shown is more authoritative, just think of Reed’s combine 40 score too. Heath isn’t fast, but he’s another who is t as slow as timed.

I don't know what his 40 time is, but he was obviously faster with a football under his arm than any of the guys trying to catch him. I think long touchdown runs are some of the most exciting plays in sports because it takes several seconds to unfold . And they're kind of rare....how many 50+ yard TD runs happen every year? Does anybody know?

GBP haven't retired Mason, he's just not signed by anybody. #17 made the same mistake twice, costing us a total of 2 points. He made his only FG attempt, right?

Please wait before you panic, there'll be plenty of time for that later. If we stick with him, gotta figure he'll cost us at least 1 W. His upside is tremendous! I don't know if he has a great kicking specialist to work with him on his aim; a Tom Clements for kickers?

He’s been bad in practice once. He’s 75% since that and was above that before. He’s dealing with 2 snappers and 2 holders as well as being a rookie.

Am I thrilled no, but I don’t think competition does much at K or P. It’s a solo profession—unless you think he’s just cruising and needs a kick up his behind mentally?

Should we pick up a rival as insurance? That’s a reasonable question. Is there one out there better than is likely to be the case post cut downs? This is peak employment time for kickers. If there isn’t, give him as many snaps as we can and see if he can settle before cut downs.

AFter that really lousy practice, they said that there was some kind of tweak they made to his approach and it cleared things back up. Still, how much of kicking is mental? They need to get him straightened out before he really gets the yips.

I'm digging Sapp III.

Reviewing game a second time, they didn't go at Moore a ton, but he ranged far on plays opposite side to make tackles. Can't wait to see more from both. I think Sapp III is a gamer.

AJJ showing anything was a positive for him, and I expect he'll improve in the next 2 preseason opportunities he has. He's a very good tackler.

KKB,

do you mean #75 Rhyan? Somebody else said they thought he played poorly. He was on the field a lot, I wouldn't give him a bad grade but personally I couldn't see enough to compare him to Newman. I think everybody here would like to see Newman gone, I just want to see him clearly and convincingly beat by 5 first.

From our safeties, #6, 20, 30, 34, 36 and even 48 made good plays. 36 made a GREAT play! Not quite an int but still. That's the entire position group except for 26 Savage and 38 Gaines who is now listed as a slot CB. I think Savage did not play?

If none of that "stood out" to you then you have high expectations, and I think they lived up to them pretty well for an exhibition game. I especially liked seeing our DBs meeting LBs at the TE :)

I was pleasantly surprised by the safeties. I noted that Moore looked extremely competent tackling. A couple of guys made nice form tackles. [I remember a RB bouncing off LB Eric Wilson - though it was just one play.] Owen, Sapp, and Anthony Johnson all looked like more than just camp bodies. Lot of time for the safety room to shake out.

Loved Valentine, btw, and liked Ballentine. Hooper and Tyrell Ford looked like they could play themselves onto the PS. Jean-Charles finally made a couple of plays. Kiondre Thomas needs to get in third gear real soon.

A couple of blown coverages, apparently, for the secondary. Lots of new faces, so that is to be expected - it is a little more worrisome simply because that has been a hallmark of the Joe Barry defenses.

Yes on blown coverages. A disturbing amount of completed passes, especially long completions allowed by our (JB) defense. Several key moments last season I was ready to crucify JB, some of them recounted by members here in exquisite detail.

I have no idea if those big plays allowed were because of coaching failing to "put our players in a position to succeed," player error, or what. Time to adjust, learn, coach etc whatever it takes to get that fixed. Surely it would have been much worse against their #1 QB.

Aside from that, I've seen #34 Owens look great before last night in the "assignment sure and solid tackling" category, which seems an apt description for what's needed at the position. Last night continues his case. Even if he doesn't start, if he's just on the roster it's almost certain he gets meaningful playing time before the season ends. Moore might be Owen's stiffest competition at S IMHO? No disrespect to the presumptive starters, but these are our best 4 I think. The battle is for #5.

Valentine suffered a "stinger" injury? Is that just a painful jolt you're expected to recover from in a day? He looked fine on the sideline later. He was the big surprise to me of our DBs, he had himself a night! I was surprised to see #22 SJC making plays. #43 Thomas? 21 people need to be cut. At least 7 CBs are better, and Gaines as slot CB makes 8. #27 & 40 seem like cut candidates now, yes. Not just based on last night, either.

Not every cut of the 21 required will have MLF pulling his hair out, but last night mostly made that harder, not easier. From what I saw anyway. Will be looking for vid to review on YouTube, channel recommendations appreciated ...

Yeah. Kind of tough too for them in knowing how important every rep is. Pressure on Safeties because it's really their only time to show tackling acumen.

Valentine is the bomb. What a night for him. He belongs 100%.

SJC surprised me too! But, he's from that Miami area warehouse of speed corners. You can see it in him, even though he's not 40 fast. He plays fast. Good to see him improving Year 1- Year 2.

Ballentine made plays too! Secondary could be a strength more than we might think. Of course, I thought the pressure up front was consistent and solid, which helps any secondary.

It was an encouraging night for all those mentioned, and Sapp III I thought. He's showing that "it" quality. Playmaker.

Not saying Rhyan was great. But it looked like there was enough from Rhyan and Telford, to want to see them get more playing time.
Newman is what he is.... and is not going to improve, while the other 2 could still develop.

I read that Walker played well, but I was not able to see it. BTW - the announcers for the preseason game were terrible. Not just Homer's, but they offered very little info on lineup changes, or much of any packer info.

Many don't understand the damage, or the challenges multiple concussions can do to a person. This is personal, but had 2 major bell ringers in my lifetime. The 2nd 23 years ago in a car accident. Rear ended at full speed waiting at a stop light from behind. Rocked my world for 2 years.

I kid you not, I couldn't feel my feet touch the ground from March through November. Felt like everywhere I went I was floating a foot off the ground. Had double vision for 5 years, which has thankfully corrected.

Since people see no bandages, they can't grasp the injury with a closed head injury and TBI. It can cause immense depression, and at times, self medication in an attempt to escape the depression.

My thinking is Sternberger suffered some of this stuff with his hit to the helmet in a no tackling practice vs. HOU. I have immense empathy for him, and hope he one day can regain his once promising career.

He was considered one of the best in his class.

Not sure of our vaunted TE's and the passing game utilizing them? Watson showed nothing. He just cant seem to get separation, he is always covered. Toure came around a lot from last year.

#9 was covered more deliberately than anyone else on the team! That's his role. It takes pressure off somebody, somewhere. And he still made completions. We moved the ball well, including passing. I don't have the stats but somebody here does and they disprove your claims.

When he was first picked I said #9 was perfect to take over the MVS role and I still do: even when not targeted, MVS helped the whole team greatly by requiring the opposing defense to send their fastest guy to try to cover him. Spreading out the defense opens up somebody, somewhere. The sheer stress on the defense helps, even when they do cover everything well. His "route tree" was limited to straight go routes until the last half of his last season in GB. His career reception rate is 50%.

#9 came in on day 1 better than that; an actual route tree and a higher reception rate. His main role with the team is still to stress the opposing defense, spreading it out, and helping somebody else get open. At least that's the strategy I'd like to see used. I hope JL10 only targets him when he's actually open. We have lots of plays using 4 and 5 receivers, and lots of depth at all the skill positions to surprise opponents all season long.

How is Goodson's shoulder? Can MLF keep coming up with GREAT new plays on a weekly basis? That's a Bill Belichek specialty. Can our offense retain everything so they don't have to repeat it during weekly practices during the regular season so they can concentrate on new plays designed to win specific matchups on the schedule? That's very demanding on a bunch of rookies, and also a great test of MLF. That's the NFL.

This could be a great season! Even if we only get 6 wins, development over next year and truly contending in 2025 is still on the menu and nothing last night removed that possibility. Including production from our TEs. #84 Davis went down with a shin injury. [ETA: torn ACL. Season ender. Hopefully doesn't end his career] Kraft should be able to learn to hang onto the ball but that was not an interception, his knee was down with full control and possession.

Fullbacks might get used :)

Watson's draft profiles often failed to consider he played in a huge run heavy attack in college, so his routes were limited to what the HC knew. Also, his father being a Pro, former Packers Safety, taught him EVERY ROUTE as a youth.

I'm not worried about Christian Watson in the least, and look forward to him having a great year. He laid one hell of a block to spring Dillon last night. WHOAH!!!!

He also showed commitment to his craft and team by coming in far more developed physically to better handle the rigors of the NFL and a 17 game schedule.

A good percentage of the games the Packers are capable of winning this year will be decided by a field goal. They need to get Crosby back and pay him what he wants. Also, what is with MLF and his ridiculous challenges?? Or was he just using it to practice his flag toss?

MLF did make two errors on challenges, but both were very close calls. Neither were "ridiculous" mistakes. Johnson looked like he intercepted it; the refs eventually got that one right. Kraft was NOT an interception, and MLF failed to challenge it.

You don't at all "know" that multiple games will be decided by a FG. It's reasonable to expect that sticking with #17 costs us at least 1 W due to missed FGs. Although last night makes losing by missed extra points seem more likely? That should be correctable via sheer mechanics. Also, it's not reasonable to think they even try to go all season without even a backup on the PS. Seems they're trying to give #17 all the reps possible throughout preseason.

If anybody's likely to break the league record for longest FG, it's this guy. Taking the time and effort to develop his accuracy is worth it! If there's ever a season to risk missed FGs, it's this one. Yes, it's a risk.

Notice that #41 Whelan also had two short punts, one of those I'd call shanked. He's got a big leg too but is less consistent than #17. He's also the clear #2 behind #16, IMHO. Just because O'Donnell's more consistent.

I'd like to take that bet, but I don't know what a good percentage might mean. And then you threw in "capable of winning", and that takes it to another level, because I have no idea of what that means.

A good FG unit probably improves the w/l record as much as a good QB does, as opposed to an average one. We've had a good FG unit for a long time and he helped us win a lot of games and didn't cost us very many losses. It would be easy to bring back Crosby, but how does that improve the team for the future? At some point, everybody has to move on, and this is as good a time as any to secure a good FG unit for the next several years.

If it comes down to the end of a game depending on a FG....you should have played better so that didn't happen. That's a common answer, and it's true. Being two scores up in the fourth quarter is different than two scores down so you don't want it to come down to the last play, so you can get boned by an official (Fail Mary) or some incredible freak play (Hail Mary).

all true. An interesting development per one of Andy's podcasts is that the kicker I was looking at before the draft (Smythe?) just got released last week by da Bares. He's very consistent, with good enough range. No history with Rich Bisaccia. While I think they've been waiting til after final cuts so #17 gets every preseason rep possible, it might be time to snag this UDFA?

Of course a proven vet at league minimum would be better.

Um…..MLF wasn’t calling the plays. He hands that off to an assistant every preseason.

Concerning the Tyler Davis injury, as he was retained for his blocking and ST play, I bet the Packers are kicking themselves that they didn't re-sign Marcedes Lewis.

Who is going to be that blocking TE now as Davis is likely done for the season? It might be too early to expect much from Kraft so I see them signing a Vet TE as a blocker now

What Davis did Lewis can’t in terms of STs. Lewis excelled as an extra OL, Davis was asked to be more mobile and supposedly to be a dual threat this year. We’d already decided to go without a Lewis type apparently. First up I’d the 6’8 Allen, who possibly had the best run block of the night, coincidentally.

WW, I doubt there is cap space for a veteran TE. Considering #44 & 81 as fullbacks we have the two rookies and #49 Allen at TE. This might change the plan to resurrect the FB role?

A different way to skin this cat is since Mercedes Lewis was a 6th O lineman, use ... an actual O lineman. Crazy thought I know; we have 2 under 300#.

I don't think the Packers are kicking themselves over not re-signing the 5th oldest active player in the NFL.

This is not an indictment of Lewis' value as a player. I think he's an asset still. However, there is zero question when looking at this Packers roster that they are attempting to build a team for then next decade, not the next 2 years.

Wilson's run reminded me of a blink move ala Barry Sanders to get outside and then a Tony Dorsett jet to the end zone. I didn't see the move as it was too quick, but saw it on the replay. The speed was uncanny given the size of the man.

Bodes well for our future :)

He's listed as a 24 year old rookie. His official 40 time is obviously wrong, and in our favor. Officially, he was faster than anyone trying to catch him last night, lol.

I thought Love was ok. Wish they would have played him more, IMO, he needs all the reps he can get. Can’t have the Musgrave overthrow in the regular season. From what I’ve read, Cincy only played 1 defensive starter. On to NE and hoping for no more injuries.

CH, I'm just glad none of our presumed starters were hurt. 5 injuries! Season ended for our #1 ST, so I guess Tyler Davis really was a starter.

Pats should be a completely different situation, hopefully our O line can keep JL10 safe for as much time as he needs to establish a connection with every possible target he might throw to this season. If he does all that and they want him to sit out against Seattle? I'd be ok with that.

It was a missed throw, no doubt.

The other guy regularly threw uncatchable balls, too. Usually at players' ankles. But he was the GOAT so nobody talked about it.

There will always be throws that get away from you, there will always be mistakes, and downs you wish you had another crack at. Physical mistakes, the old guy used to say, you can live with the physical mistakes. The mental mistakes are the ones you need to learn from and be concerned about happening in the future.

We're going to be alright.

A rostered filled with height, weight and speed. Physical dominance on the line of scrimmage. Gutekunst has transformed the packers into a bully. While doing it with a young roster. A lot of tough decisions on players for the roster. Good to see the packers open up and attack people play to your player’s strengths. Coaching will be the key to success they have enough talent to win the division. Develop and grind through the ups and downs of the season .

They looked good in 1st quarter, but both teams sat a lot of starters. With Love, Packers did not run as much as I thought they would.

I figured they'd pass much more than during the regular season so I wasn't surprised. Of course a vulnerable receiver is at risk but the rules have changed a great deal to protect them; run plays have greater risk of injury. Maybe. Theoretically.

#33 in for one play and done for the night. #28 a little more. Our smallest RB out with an injured shoulder which could mean anything from no loss of playing time to surgery that loses all or most of the season. I didn't see him get hurt and hope he's ok. Same for our two biggest O linemen down to ankle injuries. I saw Tenuta's and hope it's not a high ankle sprain ...
