Packers add safety Tarvarius Moore and long snapper Matt Orzech

Both players will look to make their mark on a special teams unit that looks to build off a solid 2022.

The Packers announced two free agent signings earlier this afternoon.

Former 49ers safety Tarvarius Moore and former Rams long snapper Matt Orzech will join the Packers and look to make their mark on a special teams unit that looks to build off a solid start of a turnaround in 2022 under coordinator Rich Bissacia.

Moore is a sixth-year player who was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the third round (No. 95 overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft out of Southern Mississippi. He played in 61 regular season games with 13 starts during the regular season, registering 87 tackles (63 solo), six passes defensed, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. Moore also registered 26 tackles on special teams. He appeared in six postseason contests and recorded a tackle (solo), two passes defensed and an interception as well as three special teams tackles.

Orzech was originally signed as an undrafted free agent out of Azusa Pacific University by the Baltimore Ravens in 2019. After being released by the Ravens after training camp, he was claimed off waivers by the Jacksonville Jaguars and played in all 16 games in 2019. Orzech was released by the Jaguars on Sept. 5, 2020 and went on to spend time on the practice squads of the Miami Dolphins and Tennessee Titans during the 2020 season. After being released by the Titans in May of 2021, he was claimed off waivers by the Los Angeles Rams and went on to play in 34 regular season games and four postseason contests for the Rams over the next two seasons (2021-22).

Packers fans will remember Moore as the player Romeo Doubs beat for a 4th down touchdown in preseason last summer.

I only have one question: Can Moore tackle? It would be nice to have a safety that could tackle.

SF miscast him as a rookie, switching Moore to CB, and it just was not his game. Tarvarius Moore is a natural Safety, which he played his entire college career.

4.32 speed. Suffered Achilles injury in 2021.

Gutekunst tirelessly adding quality talent, again. Hats off to his Pro Personnel scouts, though I have zero doubts Tarvarius Moore was on their draft radar in Jaire’s class. Moore was one of my big draft crushes that year.

Quality. Player. Elite run stop. R2 grade 2018 draft.

San Francisco misused him, switching him from Safety to CB, and it wasn’t his game, at all. Hit run D remained solid though. 2021 Achilles injury.

This could prove to be a great add with a switch back to his natural Safety position. Definitely worth a shot with his medical cleared, and totally on brand signing prior to draft.

Here’s my draft notes:

Tarvarius Moore - Southern Miss
6-2 191 4.32 33” arms 11.1 broad 38.5 vertical

6.35 grade from nfl draft profile with a quality starter projection.

PFF hidden gem. NFC Scouting Director could not believe he wasn’t invited to Combine.

During Moore’s Senior year (2017) 522 of 831 defensive snaps were either in the box or at FS, earning an elite run-defense grade of 90.2 that ranked 1st among the 123 draft-eligible safeties and an 82.9 coverage grade that ranked tied for 18th.

His last two years Moore had an 86.2 coverage grade and allowed just nine completions on 24 targets for 173 yards and one touchdown, 5 INT, 2 PBU. Passer rating allowed of just 37.7 on throws into his coverage — 3rd best among Safeties with at least 20 targets in coverage.

Not characterized as a simple workout warrior. Moore’s a premium athlete w smooth hips, fluid feet, ability to handle man cover matchups that others could struggle with.

Blazes down alley to stop RBs before turning corner. Quick play action recognition/react. Exhibited great ball skills.

Moore is not a raw prospect and projects to be game ready quickly in NFL.

Good player add where we need the help!

Since our safety room is virtually empty adding a depth player is the least the Packers can do. I'm hoping that the Packers are considering pairing Ford and Douglas at Safety during the preseason so that we can see if they anything there with those two that can work in the regular season.

As of today the Packers have empty rooms at TE, Safety and DL with the departure of Lowry. Im fine with Lowry gone but the Packers still need to acquire legitimate NFL level support for Kenny Clark.

In addition to the 3 position groups that I mentioned above the Packers also need to add at least 2 WRs and a solid Edge player prior to the start of the season not to mention more depth on their OL. Thanks, Since '61
