Packers Add Rookie Running Back Brandon Ross

Green Bay has added another back into the mix to vie for the 3rd spot behind Eddie Lacy and James Starks

Demovsky has the goods

The Green Bay Packers signed rookie Brandon Ross on Wednesday. The 5-foot-10, 201-pound Ross went undrafted out of Maryland but then initially signed as a free agent with the Minnesota Vikings, who then released him on May 23 after just three weeks with the team.

Ross, who averaged 6.4 yards per carry as a senior at Maryland and had 10 touchdowns, will compete with fellow undrafted rookies Don Jackson (Nevada) and Brandon Burks (Troy) plus second-year pro John Crockett for the third halfback position, assuming the Packers keep three.

Crockett, who was an undrafted free agent out of North Dakota State last year, began his rookie year on the practice squad but was promoted to the active roster in December and carried just nine times for 21 yards. He’s far from a lock for the No. 3 job.

The Packers had been looking at adding a running back throughout the offseason, at one point taking a look at Ronnie Hillman

Ross adds a bit of wiggle to a backfield that hasn't exactly been known for its ellusiveness. Should be a fun camp battle to watch play out.

I'm mad that WR didn't finish that block on the long screen play. But never mind that....

I like his feet. It's difficult to explain, but the play at 2:50 as he's hitting the running lane -- it's so smooth. At regular speed, you can't tell he even made a cut. In slow-motion you can barely tell he even made a cut.

Another example,the play @ 3:19.

Interesting prospect. Kid looks like Sproles more than any RB at the moment on the Packers list!

Two things I like from the tape: he always appear to fall FORWARD when being tackled and appears to really protect the ball well. Should be fun to watch.

Crockett hype. More annoying than Janis hype. And less justified. Despite the crowning of King Crockett (nine carries - 21 yards - 2.3 average) by the usual series of extreme homers, competition for the #3 RB spot is wide open. If there is one at all..

Totally agree. Way too small a sample and based on MMs comments about special teams don't see him getting many snaps, if at all at RB. And that assumes he even makes team.

He looks very elusive and seems to possess natural ability to catch, cut and break tackles. No blocking highlights, however.

I'm no scout, but I saw a decent jump cut, which all NFL rb's must have, a lack of afterburner speed, and gigantic holes against less than elite competition.

But TT's done his homework. Mr. Ross wouldn't draw a sniff nor an NFL training camp paycheck without at least some ability to contribute.

This shows 1) importance of finding playmakers on offense, 2) lack of coaching staff confidence that those playmakers are already on the roster (look at all the positions where we didn't take another long-shot player-QB, OL, TE, WR). Starks is 30, Lacy is 250 and probably playing Pokemon Go right now.
