Your opening segment sums up why this had to happen perfectly.

Did anybody see that our last DC, Fangio also got fired yesterday. It's going to be exciting to see who our new hire is.

Fangio was never Green Bay's DC. Pettine was Barry's predecessor.

It's better to resolve these matters quickly, if possible. We all remember the Favre saga dragging on the entire summer, and it doesn't help the team.

I'm fine with waiting til the Ravens are out of the playoffs or SB winners before making a DC decision.

Hopefully MLF doesn't drag his feet and lose out, people are getting hired quickly. I agree that ideal candidate(s) are in the Ravens' employ.

It really seems like our defensive back play, especially Safety went downhill under Joe Barry's leadership. Jerry Gray leaving really highlighted his disagreement with Barry in how to play the DBs. Savage's play really cratered under Barry. I can see us trying to keep Savage if he signs a prove it deal, but if not we can find a better tackling player that can catch a damn ball when its thrown right to him. It doesn't get any easier than that pick. I would go after the Bills FA, Taylor Rapp. They got him for $2 mill last year. There will be a ton of reasonable, talented Safeties again this off season. Not a high-priced position group. Draft 2 good ball hawk, able tackling guys in the draft and a good FA.

Safety should be our first pick this year, hopefully after a move back from # 25. Maybe trade back 10-12 spots if we can find a trade partner, Pick a top 2 Safety while gaining at least another top 100 pick. Start the rebuild of that position group and fix that weakness like we fixed WR and TE. GB did a great job trading back and gaining picks last year. Our biggest need Safety, will see the top ones coming off the board in the top 1/4 of the second round so that really gives us a chance to trade back, still pick a top 3 Safety, and score another high pick to fill another hole or double up like we did at TE last year.

I haven’t gone through players for the draft yet, but if there is a really good non box only safety in round one or early round 2, I’d jump all over him and then invest in a FA to pair with him.

Two rookie safeties scare me, but we need talent too. Draft another late to add to depth and maybe keep Owens or Ford.

I think a lot depends on the new DCs philosophies and scheme. They could be fine with a more traditional role or want more interchangable players. I'd like to see a guy that uses more there safety nickel and dime because that's all the rage in college so there's more safeties with experience in the slot than there are CBs coming out these days.

I do think FA SSs are generally cheaper than FS. Kinchens, Nubin and Bullock have all played all three spots with Bullock probably the most well rounded in '23.

The one thing about hiring a Baltimore guy is they will probably want a bigger player to play a role similar to Hamilton. Dugger and Chinn are both FAs and both are good athletes but Dugger will be a lot more expensive and I'd guess the Patriots will try and keep him.

Totally agree about two rookie safeties being scary. I wonder about resigning old man Hyde to bring some leadership to that group.

Don't know about safety, hope gute uses A high pick to replace bachtiari. Yosh ,don't know if he remains, walker with all respect plays quite well, never forget he was a 7th round pick. I think Gute will take a high pick to replace backthiari. Its important to give love a very good line. Remember stokes hasn't played because of the severe injuries to his leg, next season will be his 4th, hopefully being healthy he can play well at corner. We have no idea who mlf ,gute or Mr. President desire to bring as oc. I prefer a experienced dc to take command, not a previous position coach moving to dc at first time. There's Frazier,Wink, Vrabel wants hc job, don't think he'll go under mlf,who was his assistant at Tennessee. If some how Murphy can bring Bellichick to Green Bay , seems many teams arent interested in him. Of course if he could come as dc, an vice hc to mlf would be a dream. Let's hope mlf brings a dc with a lot of experience and knowledge. Gpg

Our biggest need is the interior of the O line. Safeties don't prevent QB injury.

What about the hybrid LB / DB player we've heard talked about from 1265? If the new DC sees that as being valuable I'd be alright with using the first pick on that, or a great S who can contribute right away. Generally I'd rather see priority given to the O line though, those are the ones preventing injury to the QB.

Regardless of what happens with Savage, CBs are more valuable to a pass defense than Safeties, that's why they're paid more and more of them are taken in the first round. Right now, in a perfect world, our starting CBs are Alexander, Stokes, and Nixon. And these guys get injured, which leads to Ballentine and Valentine and others on the field.

We need help in the secondary, but if we're looking at a first round pick, I'd rather spend it on a CB than a S.

Nixon is not good enough to play Nickel as a starter-Keep him as a returner.
Stokes is injured too often and has regressed.
GB needs 2 really good corners and a legit Safety. Savage is inconsistent.

You can find CBs later, particularly slot types. We have Alexander, Valentine shows promise. Stokes may be allowed to press cover. We have Zilch at safety other than development prospects.

If you look at PFF's snaps breakdown of the safeties and CBs coming out 90% of the guys with a lot of experience in the slot are safeties. There are 2-3 CBs in the whole draft that played a lot of slot snaps. It seems like the way college coaches are looking at it is if you can play outside you stay outside.

I think you are generally right in college, but it’s not every college or player. To me it depends on our system as to what we want from the comparable role and thus what type of player may fit it.

I mentioned it because it’s often used as a reason for needing a corner. To be honest, it’s a need as we have no depth. The label is just that.

So the question now is do we want a DC that utilizes the strength of the existing roster, or does MLF want players that fit within the new DC's scheme? Because that makes the difference in how quickly the SB window opens.

MLF has a big choice to make, hopefully he gets input from others in the organization to make sure it's the best possible choice. I don't know if anybody besides Gutey should be involved in that or what MLF would prefer.

NFL teams ignore middle of the field defenders at their own peril. These days there's more action in the middle of the field than outside of it. A playmaking safety is just as valuable as a good CB, especially one with great range.

If we could get some good draft picks - size speed tackling coverage, I would replace all these guys except Jairre, ballen and vallen tines.
Nixon, savage too slow, Stokes too dumb, Rudy tootie high school? With a sound draft and free agency, you can't make the secondary worse then last year.

Can someone tell me what the defense did postseason against the Cowboys and 49ers that they didn't do during the regular season?

Very inconsistent play throughout both. Sometimes they were great, sometimes they rolled out the red carpet for the opponent to march down the field.

Hopefully we've seen the last of that!

Hey, I think its safe to say were all glad LeFluer got rid of Barry but to me this wasn't quick it was a year late.
Anyways he is gone and we got a kicker and our un-trainer is gone too. Three big improvements in a few days is yes quick.
