Nick Perry, Packers reach new deal to keep him in Green Bay

The buzzer-beating general manager of the Green Bay Packers strikes again, appeasing the discomfort of many.

Ted Thompson and the Packers are expected to announce the re-signing of free agent outside linebacker Nick Perry today, who was set to hit the open market without any contract talks from the team at 4 p.m. ET today.

Many sources say it's a long-term deal for Perry, who is coming off his best season since being drafted by the Packers in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft.

ESPN's Rob Demovsky broke the news early Thursday morning, saying that the Packers are to "roll the dice" with re-signing the team's 2016 sack-leader. And he's right.

Perry's career has been plagued by injury, which has been a major contributor in his fluctuating play through the last five seasons. However, in 2016, Perry shined with opposite edge rusher Clay Matthews on the field. Perry recorded 8.5 sacks with Matthews opposite him and just 2.5 without. He suffered a "significant" hand injury that required him to miss two games, but finished the season playing the final pair of games with a club on his left hand.

"The 28th overall pick in the 2012 draft had been dogged by injuries during the early part of his career, playing in only 17 of a possible 32 games during his first two seasons. He has missed only five games over the past three seasons."

This new deal for Perry comes just a year after the Packers declined his fifth-year option and signed him to a one-year "prove-it" deal, and as a result, Perry led the team in sacks even while missing two games. Perry was expected to hit the market while carrying a hefty amount of interest from a handful of other teams including the Colts and Jets. He was going to be a hot commodity on the market.

Perry's market value was expected to hover around $8.5 million dollars, however, details of his new contract with the team have yet to be announced.

Along with Perry's pending contract, the Packers are also expected to hand out a trio of roster bonuses to three of their top players.

Due to the way their contracts were structured, Mike Daniels, David Bakhtiari and Mason Crosby were signed to veteran contracts in the past that would eventually reward them with bonuses during the later stages of their deals. Demovsky also reported details of the bonuses.

"Mike Daniels will collect $5 million. David Bakhtiari will get $1.196 million. Mason Crosby will take home $1.05 million. Those are the three major roster bonuses the Green Bay Packers have to pay out shortly after the 2017 NFL year officially gets underway at 4 p.m. ET."

With hours remaining before the new league year begins, don't rule out another bombshell deal out of Green Bay. Especially not with players like Jared Cook, T.J. Lang and Eddie Lacy still without offers.

Connor Barwin was released from Philly. Worth a shot.

Lord knows the Packers need another pass rusher. I'm more inclined to see one drafted. Watt would be a good fit.

Agree, try to get Barwin on the cheap. And I'd draft TJ Watt in a heart beat. Need depth and play makers at OLB

I agree. Barwin has already made a lot of money and the thought of playing in a LB group with Matthews and Perry and a QB like Rodgers has to be appealing. If Barwin could be had on a manageable deal that would really help solidify the front 7 and give them some proven depth. Not to mention it would give the Packers 4 very legitimate proven pass rushers (Matthews, Perry, Daniels, Barwin)

Barwin would be a good fit as a pass rusher in the Packers defense. It makes a lot of sense.

I would also draft an OLB high. You can't have to many pass rushers.

I bet Perry got around 9-10 mil a year, but had to be done. We still need draft picks to develop, but Perry is proven. I thought he played pretty well with the club too. I'd still draft an OLB in Round 1

Well worth it, even if he misses time. Without him, the Packers had no chance to win it all, period.

If Cook not signed, would like to see two TE's in first three picks. They're that good. Not a Richard Rodgers marginal type, but a couple of studs. Engram is off the charts.

Yeah, that's not gonna happen. If Cook isn't resigned Ted will draft a TE but not until the 2nd or 3rd round. Engram's combine shot him into the 1st round and that won't happen for us. It's an OLB in the 1st for us.

Glad Perry is back. I mentioned it yesterday but it sounds great to say again...Perry was the #1 3-4 OLB against the run in the NFL last season. Want to see the details but Perry was the most important player the Packers needed to resign.

I expect Perry got 5 years, $55-60 million. He's worth it.

Now lock down Cook and at least try to retain Tretter. If we kept all three and held on to Lacy and Jones too, I'd be in 7th Heaven.

Woah, now...easy with the "busts" there packer fans. What's with this penchant for trashing packer players. Don't give up on DJones. Green Bay is a D&D team....and DJones hasn't peaked. We don't know what his peak is..but its up to coaches to develop the right schemes for each player. That is why many of us like to see TT extend rookie contracts particularly on Dline, Oline and secondary. Those units have to morph together. DJones was a big investment....so ride it out.

The signing is probably good for the defense if only because it avoids a big turnover and yet another rookie fest. I do wonder why the Packers were put into the position of mixed results for 4 years, a prove it year that worked out for Nick and now a big payday. MM talked about Perry being powerful and a Packer guy but it took 5 years to get a sniff of his value. If he was so good - why didn't we re-up him at the end of his rookie contract.

I hope it works out and Nick Perry is a force but put me down as skeptical.

If TT had given him, say, 4 years and $32M at the end of his rookie deal, the football community would've been stunned. Now it would look like a bargain.

He hadn't earned the money it would've taken to lock him up long term at that point. Both sides rolled the dice on an extra year...Perry came up aces.

Ultimately the question is: which Nick Perry do we see for the duration of the contract? The November 2015-January 2016 Nick Perry or the pre-2015 Nick Perry. If it's the former, the Packers did just fine.

The mixed results were ONLY because of constant injuries. Perry consistantly displayed play making splash plays the games he was healthy.

Not a huge surprise to see him go. More comp picks, please!

He was a hot commodity. Still some chance to get Lang. If not, it's Bulaga at right guard and Spriggs at right tackle.

Joel Bitonio apparently signed a deal that's going to push up the value on some of the better available OGs...including Lang. I still think the Packer starter at RG isn't currently on the roster.

I heard that Tretter may get around 8.5 million a year...

That's insane for a guy who over 4 seasons has played in 31 games and had 10 starts.

They should get a really good comp pick for that one.

Yes they are...I admit I don't know the exact formula for comp picks (It's a secret according to Over The Cap) but it has to do with salary, playing time, and postseason honors. Well if he stays healthy and for $8.5 million we should get a 4th for sure, possibly a 3rd.

I don't see the 'comp pick' as being that valuable. Certainly not off-setting a solid player. Draft picks after round 3 are still a <50% to yield a solid contributor, much less....a starter.....much less and impact player.

I'd take Trettor over an end-of 4th round draft pick.

Comp picks are just to ease a little of the loss.

What did we get for losing Hayward? End of 5th round. No way that comes out as a win scenario.

Yeah, I love Tretter, but he' s injury prone, and you can't take a chance on that type player at 8.5 mil. I'm a bit worried about this Perry deal too, but they must of thought there was nothing suitable in FA. We need defense more than anything. They better get Cook though. He made a huge diff in GB offense.

I really liked Tretter. I was hoping they could keep him. But not for that kind of money.

Cook and Lang are the pricier one's I'm worried about.

I would like to see them resign Lacy as well.

Well as we've learning this year with the chargers signing of Hayward, salary means a lot more in the comp pick formula than results on the field. Hopefully Tretter stays healthy in the dregs of Cleveland so we net an awesome comp pick for our new GM next year. Thanks, Cleveland!

I have to wonder with the signing of Perry, does that mean Barwin is out? I hope not. Perry and CM will miss at least 2-3 games/year. That means Green Bay has to have a starter quality OLB for those games as well as back-up during the games. Imagine having Barwin on one side, Perry on the other and CM in the middle. It would mess up most offense's blocking schemes. Barwin replacing Peppers would be great. Drafting another OLB, for development would be the perfect scenario.

So now Tretter is gone, probably Guion, and most likely Hyde. I bet Cook is resigned, and leaves TT maybe getting House and one more Dline guy. Not ruling out a RB and or WR.

"I have to wonder with the signing of Perry, does that mean Barwin is out? I hope not. "

Remember that Peppers is likely history, Jones is unsigned, and Elliott also doesn't have a contract, yet (but he's an RFA, I believe). That's WITH Perry coming back. They need to make a move or two, yet, just to be treading water in the pass rush department. I don't see a Connor Barwin or Jared Odrick as being out of the question.

Yes, but that was in a 4-3. If you look at his career playing in the 3-4, he's much better. He's the anti-Aaron Kampman.

Last time Barwin played OLB in a 3-4 DEF (only 2 years ago) he had 14.5 sacks! He was miscast last year as a 4-3 DE. Barwin would be a PERFECT fit for the Pack. Go get him, Ted!!

We might need another lineman, and he has mobility at his size and can pressure.
